- In today's video review, I'm talking about the brand new Sigma 60-600mm DG DN OS | Sport lens for Filming Wildlife using a Sony A7s III. This is Sigma's latest mirrorless lens, and is currently the only one on the market featuring a 10x optical zoom capability, which is honestly very impressive! I recently spent a few days in early February filming in the harsh winter environment of Yellowstone National Park, and put this lens through it's paces. Having used their older model of the 60-600mm for Canon EF mount, I was curious to see how well this new Sony E mount version would perform. I was pleasantly surprised and impressed! I’ve been using this lens on a Sony A7IV for several months now and just got back from a trip to Yellowstone where I got plenty of use out of it. I completely agree with the comments in this review. The manual autofocus fast/slow feature could could be less pronounced. Ideally you’d have a switch to either turn that feature off, or select a high/low setting. Other than that it’s been my favorite lens to shoot video and stills outdoors. Street photography and indoor candid photography are the only areas where I prefer my Sony 24-240.
I was considering the Sony 200-600 against this one, but after using the Sigma 60-600 I wouldn’t even consider the Sony at all. The range makes it soooo much easier to get shots of everything from marmots up close to birds and wolves far away. You can get the animal in frame at 60 and then quickly zoom in as much as you need.
Also, for film, a stabilizing gimbal mount is really almost necessary for certain shots, especially panning at the far end of the zoom range. I’ve tried the stabilization, and while it’s phenomenal for stills, it makes videos jerky on either setting. Even post-processing the video to stabilize it doesn’t get rid of all the jerkiness, unless you want to get real manual with the processing and spend lots of time editing.
The manual push zoom and rotary zoom does work great for stills, but a motorized zoom add-on would be best for video. With the range of this lens it’s possible to get some amazing perspective shots, but manually zooming is not ever going to be totally smooth.
You might say that the biggest downside to this lens is that it’ll motivate a lot of people to buy a couple extra pieces of equipment to make the most of its video capabilities, if they don’t already own this equipment.
Bottom line; I’m totally happy with this lens for the price point. It delivers on performance in almost every way. Only a firmware update for the manual focus and a teleconverter option would make it more ideal.

Best part about this channel is the host... someone who seems humble and really knows their craft (starting at 13 minutes... I wish you led with those outstanding shots!) Love the studio, too, seems like you're in base camp! This was the video that sold me on the 60-600mm and one of the first that compared it to the EF version. I hope Sigma updates the EF/Nikon version with the new optics, AF motor, and OS because I don't want to be tied to any one mount. (Sony is starting to screw over its customers by limiting A1 FPS on third party lenses, and Canon RF, well, you know.)

As of today, May 28th, 2024 your video is UNIQUE regarding your solution to the MANUAL FOCUSING issue of this lens. A few of other reviewers also mention this but they have no solution. On the other hand, your solution helps to some degree. You also show beautiful videos of macro and wild life photography shot with this lens. Thank Alan for such a great job!

@@andyarts8382 I use Kondor Blue for my system and have a couple 18 inch 15mm rails and a Tilta lens support to hold the lens. I have to rotate the lens foot out of the way, but it works great for my needs.
Im new, not only is this review exactly what i was looking for, but so is the rest of your videos. Footage that is inspiring. Im new to wildlife but have been documentary for a while. And while i need a long lens i want to get the right one. Gear doesn't solve everything but we have all been in the situation where we wish the lens was a little longer or the focus more shallow. If im going to invest i dont want the gear to hold me back. I never knew if all those crazy images were only shot with the $$$$$ primes. But you have shown what you can do with this. Now I know this is a lens that will work for me now and i can grow into as i explore more wildlife. Thank you.

This lens is fantastic, it's thankfully not super expensive either - comparatively speaking of course. A lot of us in the natural history world call this lens the poor mans CN20 and they are not wrong, it does a marvelous job for what it is. And just like most anything, it's how the camera operator uses his gear that makes the image shine, so have fun with it!

Fantastic to know. I've had two of their original lens for Nikon mount. The 150 to 600 & 60 to 600. I love the 60 to 600 and is my main lens for wildlife photography! Once I upgrade to mirrorless I will have to invest in the newer lens. Love the new changes and lighter weight! Yes! Thank you for the great info!

I've been a wildlife filmmaker for the better part of 5 decades. In very recent years super-zooms have really matured into amazing tools...AND at 72 I don't really want to carry almost 90+ lbs of ENG camera, 40x zoom cine lens, enormous O'Connor or Vinten tripod, as well as huge Anton-Bauer brick batteries...as I had to in my 50's and 60's. Plus, the video quality from today's mirrorless cameras is stunning. So for about $2k for camera (Panasonic GH6), $2k for the Canon version of this 60-600 lens, a bit more than $3k for a VERY stable tripod and head and $1500 for a Macbook Pro M2Pro, I can shoot and edit video images that are gorgeous, even when projected on a very large screen.
I've been using the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary for a couple years and love it, but the wider wide end of the 60-600, the much easier to use focus ring (I'm old school...manual focus), smoother zoom and weather sealing...have sealed the deal for me. I bought this lens today after a short rental.
We live in amazingly good times for natural history filmmaking...at least as far as "affordable" equipment is concerned. Oh yeah, the manual focus ring on the Canon version of this lens is not fly-by-wire as it is on the 2 newer mirrorless versions and the MF ring is more upraised from the lens barrel, making it perfect for a manual focus guy like me.
Thank you for your comment Larry! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I prefer the manual focus as well, but it's amazing what these lenses are capable of now these days as well. I've discovered for interviews with people, the autofocus and intelligent eye tracking features are actually extremely accurate and reliable for maintaining focus if a subject is moving around a lot in one place. However I still lock off focus the old school way. I am waiting for an affordable CN20 to hit the market, or something that can at least compete with that beast of a lens!

I never thought i'd find the exact Niche review I was looking for on this lens, so thank you very much! I'm pretty sure I'm going to go for the Canon Mount version with the MC11 adapter on my FX9, FX6 and A7s3. Manual focus needs to be perfect for me shooting sports video and it seems like, while the E mount DG DN version AF's quicker, the MC11 will definitely give me an ok AF option if needed.
The new E Mount DG DN version isn't a bad choice either, I just think it would take a little bit to get used to the focusing system and then it would become second nature. Coming from linear focus, it's an adjustment moving to nonlinear focus. I just like the consistency of linear focus with known focal inputs so I'm with you. But, I do like how the new one has a better image overall, especially at the wide 60mm. But, the MC11 does a marvelous job on autofocus as well.
@@FilmingTheWild The other huge factor for me is the ability to use EF mount lenses on so many different brands of camera systems. I might be living in E mount land right now but that can easily change in 12 months time and I'd rather not have to resell half my lenses 🙂
@@FilmingTheWild Well my 60-600 ef arrived and im happy. The only downside is the huge lens support foot which fouls on 15mm LWS rods. Ive been trying to see if anyone makes a smaller version with a single 1/4 20" thread but it doesnt seem like it. Might have to make something custom to lock the lens down to the rods.
@joelawryDOP I actually loosened my lens foot and spin it around to get out of the way, and then use a lens support system from Tilta to support the lens, I don’t use the lens foot to support the system at all so just spin it out of the way.

Thanks for the video! I’m using this lens too, and mostly for the videos too! And mostly for the wildlife too! Before I used to use 60-600 for the canon with converter for my Sony. So watching this video I found out a lot of things in common! But also something new for me. Thank you for sharing your experience! What microphone do you use outdoor?

Thank you for the intensive explanation, you are right about the quick turn of the focus for far subjects, im using a sony a73 as well witt the 150-600 sports, is there a dock for it? i wonder if tuning of the lens is possible with a docking ....
I’m not sure if there’s a dock for it, but I’m sure they likely have it or soon will. Perhaps that would help once calibrated better? I’d be keen to know as well.
One of the great things about using this lens for L-mount (S5IIX) is I can set the focus ring behavior to linear, which turns off the focus acceleration.
This is great, I haven't purchased this yet for Sony (Just tested out the loaner), so I hope they've incorporated it into E mount versions too!
Hi thx for your review, at last some one made a review for wildlife filmmaking :) but how do you think it will perform on a APS-C sensor looking ahead to the Sony A6700 or on the Sony A7iv that can crop as well. As that would give you nice reach of 90-900 which must be better than adding a 1.4 converter in my opinion as I've never had a good experience with converters.
It should perform well, as it's a very sharp lens, and would definitely give you that extra reach with the APS-C sensor etc. So at that point, you could also put a 1.4 extender on it and would be even greater reach (once they come out with the extenders for Sony E Mount). But yes, I usually notice some image loss on some extenders. So I'm hoping once they do come out with them, they are much improved, but we shall see!
6:45 what brand is that matte box that you have mounted directly on the front of the lens? And what (variable or fixed) ND filters do you use along with that matte box? Does the matte box fit easily on the front of the lens? i am looking to get something for my Sigma 150-600 Sports that has 105mm thread diameter at the front (same as in this e mount version).
It's a Polar Pro Base Camp system that I have, and technically it doesn't fit the 105mm of the lens, but I found a work around that works for me that I'll be sharing in an upcoming video on how to use it. There's a little screw to undo, then you can get it to fit....
Hello 👋 great video. Thoughts on a suitable variable ND filter? This may be a problem…..all I can find is NISI and is very expensive and K&F Concept which I don’t know much about. I have a Haida Pro 2 ND/CPL combo which is awesome on my 100-400. Any recommendations for this huge diameter 105mm lens?
I use the PolarPro Basecamp system, but I do have to modify it some in order to make it work. The actual matte box is about 104mm, so you have to undo a small screw so it can open further than 104mm, and then it’s a tight squeeze on to the front end of the lens.
If you can get a seamless focus ring for the lens, your manual focus issue would get fixed, I really think the slower focus pull is useful.
Also I'm currently using smallrig's follow focus too but I'm planning to get a tilta nucleus nano, so I can mount the follow focus remote to the tripod or something where it's more steady(like tripod legs) so it won't have the vibrations when pulling focus. Right now my hands are shaking when pulling focus, I also use a basic video tripod(Sirui sh15) for my bmpcc 6K pro camera with Tamron 150-600mm G2 lens.
Absolutely! I think that would be the solution as well. I do like the slower focus pull at times as well, as it certainly has it benefits for those moments. Given the resources I had for the time I had the lens before returning it to Sigma, it was frustrating, but, good call on that. It was more due to the limitations of the focus ring I had, which never is an issue really on my current 60-600 for Canon EF mount. I do have the nucleus nano as well, but haven't really used it much. I may give it a go as well, as also have been looking at mounting it to the tripod as well!

Absolutely! I need to get a rosette attachment and then I think I'm in business, as I want to attach it to the left handle region that currently has a rosette style attachment, which would be a great fit on the fluid head I use. I'll definitely talk about it once I get it.

Do a 3d pri ted infinite focus ring
Does the focus get wildly thrown off when you do fast crash zooms when you want to react to things? The Sony 100-400 does that, and when you snap zoom (in or out) the whole image just becomes a blur and AF takes time to return... while the Sony 200-600 does not display the same behavior.
To be honest, I didn't really have any moments where that came into play, however I did notice that on a few occasions when I did punch in, it was pretty quick to find focus using the AF system. I imagine it would react pretty quickly and then would gain focus relatively fast.
What type of tripod do you use with this lens. Because I have a Sigma 60 - 600 mm lens . And I find it shakes on most tripods
I use the Sachtler Flowtech 75 with FSB-8 Fluid Head and it does well in most situations. Sometimes strong winds still are an issue, but overall it’s really nice to work with, though it is a bit pricey… but worth it.
Nice review ! I currently have the 200-600 and while it's a brilliant lens, I feel frustrated because 200mm is very narrow at the wide end. I'm considering this 60-600 but it's not an internal zoom, which is handy !

I would say each have their worthy attributes, and work well for their respective types of photography/videography. There is a noticeable change in weight distribution of course with the external zoom but after working with this lens for so long, it's not that much to work around as I balance my rig at the long end, and at the wide end, even though it's off balance, it's very manageable to work with. If I am filming in more of an unpredictable situation where I'm not sure what action will take place, I would prefer working with the 60-600 for the range of focal lengths. But if I know exactly what I'm working with or a subject that doesn't require the wide, then the 200-600 would likely be my preference. I hope this helps?

I have one more question. What type of matt box are you using with what filters. I'm having a heck of a time finding a matt box to fit the 105mm. thanks in advance. Lens is epic.
That is actually a fantastic question @andyarts8382. I couldn't find one either, so I took a gamble and purchased this system from Polar Pro: amzn.to/45K1jsy It technically doesn't fit the 105mm (it can do 104mm). So, I had to do a little problem solving to make it work. There's a clamp ring that clamps around the lens and it can't be forced over the 105mm... So, I unscrewed a tiny screw in the clamp system which allows the ring to stretch past 104mm, and then it is a tight squeeze onto the lens, and then I can clamp it down. (I'll make a short video and post to UA-cam in a couple days to show this as I'm currently on a shoot so it may be a day or two). But it does the trick and works fantastic for me right now.
Well I just bought the Nisi 105mm VND 1-5 stops and it works great. You have to remove the little handle from the filter but once you do that the lens hood fits over just fine. Only draw back it when you need to change the filter setting you need to remove the hood or stick your hand inside the lens hood.

Great video. Would it reduce the 10fps manual shutter rate of the sony a7R5? It does reduce a1 to 15 in electronic shutter.
I would imagine so, it's a Sony Software thing rather than a Sigma thing. Sony just limits the capacity of non Sony glass at higher frame rates in these cameras which is dumb in my opinion.

No. 15 fps is the 'license cap' for third party, since A7R5 is capped at 10 fps (video fps doenst matter), that means you keep your 10 fps.

Thanks man! Yea, it was honestly my biggest drawback, otherwise it was great. I get why they do it, but at the same time for film or other instances it’s extremely valuable to have. I prefer to have a linear focus ring for my work.

Hey, I see you use a matte box with this lens, are you not worried about bending the lens?
Also what matte box do you use? 105MM filters are pricyyyy
I have the lens supported with a lens support so that is sturdy and held in place with no added stress at the mount. I use a polar pro matte box which is fairly lightweight and technically doesn’t fit the 105mm, but I found a way to get it to fit without any issues. I’m going to make a video on that shortly.

I have also the Canon version with a MC-11 for the A9 and a old 77D Aps-c Canon...fairly sharp but a noisy auto focus and IS you can hear it if doing a video...how is the e-mount version? compared to the Canon version? nice review thanks...
Hey @jws6181, I can't quite recall on the noise component, but I do remember it being quieter than the Canon EF version. There is still some noise most likely, but I don't recall it ever being an issue. My monitor was much more loud, but for my purposes, I always add sound back in later during post so it doesn't bother me.
Hello@@FilmingTheWild Thanks, my 200-600 makes no noise, if there is, than I can't hear it...age yes...good for video, but the close focus distance is a problem sometimes, the Sigma does a better job...
What matte box did you use?
I used the Polar Pro Basecamp series with their VND filter system. You have to remove a screw to make it work however, but it works. Technically it goes up to 104mm, so it doesn't really fit the 105mm that the lens requires, but removing the screw allows it to open further for a snug fit.

@@FilmingTheWild Noise in the background is annoying. It's like a woman screaming. Take a hint and knock off the irritating music/noise. And don't be rude. Also, you do NOT film anything. You do not use a film camera. You are in a new world, a digital world. Stop using old world terms. But if you insist, what type of film are you using. What film camera are you using? How hard is it to process film? Do you edit by cutting and pasting like we did years ago? Do you digitize film instead.

@@FilmingTheWild That is an curious response to what I'm sure was intended to be a helpful comment. There is a lot of useful information in this video and it is relevant to me as I'm considering the purchase of this lens. So I'm grateful that you put so much time and effort into it. You speak slowly and clearly, you don't dance around like an idiot and there is no hype etc. I like the way you focus on areas that are not covered in much detail by other reviews. Music is very personal and what one person likes another can't stand. There are places in this video where the (to my ears dreadful) music seems to be evenly balanced with your voice. I like and play music and given a choice my ear tends to focus on the music rather that the speech. I also "HAD to stop watching" at one point - went away and made a cup of coffee. Your highlights menu solved my problem. I'm now following it in bite sized chunks. In the Bokeh section at 21.22 the music stops. It's like the relief when the guy in the next apartment stops drilling with a pneumatic drill! "There are plenty of other reviews out there" - no there are not many as useful as yours!
