Unveiling The Secrets Of Filming Killer Whales In The Wild! | Wildlife Filmmaking Exposed
In this episode of Filming the Wild, I want to take you behind the scenes of filming a killer whale documentary! Last year I had the opportunity to produce a short film on the endangered southern resident killer whales in the Salish Sea near Seattle, Washington. This is all part of a project I'm working on with my new nonprofit organization, Reel Earth Films. Southern resident killer whales have been studied and followed closely for decades by the Center for Whale Research, so naturally we worked with them to produce our short film called "75: The Story of the Southern Residents"

Looking For Wolves in Arizona | Filming The Wild
Переглядів 6 тис.2 місяці тому
In this episode of Filming The Wild, I am back in the White Mountains, looking for wolves in Arizona! Mexican gray wolves were released into Arizona and New Mexico as part of a program to restore this endangered population of wolves here in the Southwest. They are extremely elusive, and hard to find, yet despite this fact I've set out to capture footage of them that nobody else has. This is par...

I was recently in the UK visiting my girlfriend, and wanted to get out into one of the natural areas to see what kind of wildlife I could film. I witnessed a pack of 4 wolves and a herd of elk. I wasn’t able to film them but glassed the interaction for a good 45 minutes. The wolves toyed with the elk as 7 of the bulls in the herd held them at bay as the 31 cows with calves and a big 6x6 bull held up until it was safe. It was a pretty experience to see.

      Thanks for the comment and questions! I was able to test out this lens back when it was first released, however I still have the older version as I'm saving up to get this upgrade. The lens unfortunately is not parfocal, though it is close, and often times does actually seem to hold focus rather well. With regards to focus breathing, it did perform pretty well from my recollection, though I didn't test it directly with the compensation that Sony has.

      @@FilmingTheWild thanks a lot for your input! Was the focus ring on the old one funky as the new one ? Did you have a chance to compare it to any other telephoto lenses when filming with Red or Sony cameras ?

    • @FilmingTheWild
      @FilmingTheWild 12 днів тому

      @@happy1wandering the older version has a linear focus with actual focus marks (which is great for repeatable moves) as compared too the non-linear version of the new lens which I found sometimes was problematic but that could be due to just getting used to it. I was only able to test it on the Sony A7S3, but the autofocus was superb, and rivals the Sony 200-600mm.

    I live in the White mountains. I’ve seen lots of wolves and they now have been spotted as far south as Bisbee,AZ. They are a huge problem and are decimating the elk and deer population. I have witnessed this firsthand. Reintroducing them was a huge mistake for wildlife habitat. Pretty soon they will be as common as coyotes.

    • @FilmingTheWild
      @FilmingTheWild 22 дні тому

      I appreciate your comment Josh! I spend a lot of time in the white mountains also, since before the wolves were reintroduced as well. What I’ve noticed, is that the elk have disappeared. But, the numbers are actually increasing year to year. Bringing back a predator that courses the landscape hunting prey introduces something we call the ecology of fear in prey. This is why elk are harder to find now - they are behaving more naturally, and staying away from danger including us. The numbers of elk and deer are increasing per game unit population surveys. So if anything we need more hunters or more wolves. The elk have actually decimated the vegetation in the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest. The lack of low vegetation and forest floor vegetation is astounding compared to other forests of similar ecotypes that do have healthy ecosystems with yet full array of native species.

    • @FilmingTheWild
      @FilmingTheWild Місяць тому

      The best camera and lens for outdoor wildlife photography and video is honestly the camera and lens you own - which may well be your iphone or android. But... if you are looking to buy a camera and lens, Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Fuji all make great cameras and lenses, so you can't go wrong. I prefer Sony cameras, and for wildlife if you can get to at least 300mm or longer (sigma also makes great lenses like the 60-600mm for wildlife), you'll have better zoom and more options as a photographer/videographer. A good combo would be something like a Sony A7S III and Sony 200-600mm for video, but if you are looking for photography, I'd check out the Sony A9 or A7R4.

    Cattle do not have free range The rancher has to pay for a summer lease on a particular section not cheap either

    • @FilmingTheWild
      @FilmingTheWild Місяць тому

      Yea, ranchers pay roughly $3/head per month on public lands here in Arizona, which is historically the lowest fees in the country for pubic land leases for grazing (most states are 4-5x higher than that). For example, in Montana or other states, it's closer to $13 per head a month. Granted private land leases are much higher, but most of the land leases are on public lands here in Arizona. And once the cattle are moved up to their grazing allotments for their 3-4 month stay, they have free range within that allotment, unless they get moved to another allotment per their range rotation agreement with the Forest Service.

    • @FilmingTheWild
      @FilmingTheWild 2 місяці тому

      I would beg to differ actually. The depredation rates are roughly the same across wolves in the greater Yellowstone ecoregion of Montana, Wyoming, Idaho etc. It's pretty comparable to Arizona/New Mexico, which has had a slightly higher depredation rate than other areas. Colorado has actually taken steps to address depredations by creating one of the best compensation plans in the country where ranchers will likely not feel the affects of wolves like they have elsewhere, at least financially if they are smart enough to apply for reimbursement.

    • @firstinlastout8324

      @@firstinlastout8324 I believe Colorado is setting the example of how states should work to reimburse ranchers in need of compensation. Even the people of Colorado have now raised over $300,000 in addition to other funds specifically to sort the ranching community. Other states should be watching this and implementing this. It’s incredible to see, and amazing for conservation efforts. Other states do in fact reimburse, but it often takes time for the reimbursement to get paid out.

      Thank you Jianan, I'll check it out. I do use the canon mount still, but I have a basecamp VND that works great for me needs when I'm using my A7s III.

    Not sure of the date but it must have been about 1973 my wife and I were camping near Hawley lake Az and we saw two wolves ( not coyotes) much larger and darker so not sure of the government assessments of their numbers? I hunted coyote most of my life and what we saw wasn’t coyotes….. guess we were incredibly lucky!

    Hello 👋 great video. Thoughts on a suitable variable ND filter? This may be a problem…..all I can find is NISI and is very expensive and K&F Concept which I don’t know much about. I have a Haida Pro 2 ND/CPL combo which is awesome on my 100-400. Any recommendations for this huge diameter 105mm lens?

      I use the PolarPro Basecamp system, but I do have to modify it some in order to make it work. The actual matte box is about 104mm, so you have to undo a small screw so it can open further than 104mm, and then it’s a tight squeeze on to the front end of the lens.

    My wife and I spend our summers in Alpine and last year I filmed a pack of Mexican Grey Wolves take down an elk fawn near highway 191 across from the Tal Wi Wi lodge. There were 4 wolves in the pack, with one clearly being the alpha wolf.

    I hiked in the White Mountains back in May.I stayed at the Hon Dah Casio and hiked several different trails on BLM land in the region duringthe day. I didn't hear any lobos there. But,driving the loooooong way back to Tucson through the Gila,I heard some I am pretty sure. I got out of my car a few times to get mesmerized by the night sky out there before I had to fly home to Louisiana. On the trip I learned about Aldo Leopold's legacy in Arizona. I learned about him and his legacy in previous trips to the Gila.What an amazing part of the world. I can not wait to go back. This time,I will probably stay in Alpine. Thank you for your work and dedication to this amazing part of the world!
