It's time to put this Salt Water Flood Salvage ZR1 Corvette to the test. After replacing multiple parts, and replacing the fluids (multiple times), can we actually get it to run???

Im really surprised the battery lost power so quickly ..... I mean you always have great quality batteries kickin around the farm 😆
Doesn't help that cars of that era still had under hood lights
Great, informative video.
Yo rat. 🐀
Awesome comeback video. 29 mins passed like 29 seconds. The new hire is smart and optimistic, exactly what the channel needed.
Unfortunately, the 29 days passed like 60 days.
Don’t let uncle Rich discourage you, we love watching you revive these otherwise totaled classics!
Revive implies actually finishing something though.
I hate to hear Sage stopped showing up . I love these older corvettes and this is really interesting to watch so thanks for sharing this build!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for fixing this ZR-1Corvette. These cars are so special! I had a 1990 ZR-1 in the early 2000's for several years. I deeply regret getting rid of that car. I'd rather have that car than any car I've had since.
You can buy a 10 turns potentiometer of the maximum resistor value too and use a multimeter to set the resistance of each key. Way easier and faster
I was just about to post the same thing!
This Corvette deserve a nice performance exhaust for the first drive!
IMHO exhaust should be the last thing once you know its a keeper. Always amazes me that JR Garage spends so much time detailing and swapping exhausts before they know if the engine is salvageable.
That rare ZR1 is a keeper
I respect you a lot for mentoring these young men. they'll gain knowledge from their time with you that they'll carry with them for the rest of their lives. You're a good man Sam
Cheap labor . Not talking about step-mom .
I JUST absolutely love you Sam. Your thought process, how intelligent and resourceful you are. I love this channel and everything about it. Hope step Mom stops by sooner than later.
This has been one of my favorite series from you in a while! Keep it going
Sorry to hear about Sage. Hope Ben works out. Crazy that the car still starts.
Ben seems pretty sharp. I think we got an upgrade.
I really wanny know if he left or Sam kicked him out
@@DeepRacer-zr4yp Sam says he just stopped showing up. My guess is the relationship soured. Perhaps a performance issue.
Good to see this thing finally getting worked on. At first I was kind of annoyed when I began noticing that your videos were becoming very inconsistent with uploads but now...I recognize that unlike most channels that say they work on their projects "alone" but really have a small army of people behind the scenes working on their projects for them...I've began appreciating your channel more. Lol still sucks though going 3-4 weeks or more without an upload when you have an interesting project!
I think he lets his last video peak out in views drops a new one and then people tend to see the new one and go back to the first one. Smart idea if you ask me
It may have something to do with sourcing parts. Like the starter motor had to be sent away and fixed. I suspect that took some weeks. But on the other hand Sam has his own copart outside the barn. Should not be difficult to find a project
@@Nwflyingsolow honestly it's not this, I've had a few personal slow downs the past month.
@@Samcrac I think I saw a hint of that in one of the scenes in this upload. I will pray for you that things are on the up and up for you Sam. Love your vids!
That's the reality though of doing your research and waiting for parts.
Hi @Samcrac! Fellow C4 ZR1 owner here.
I highly recommend you put some zinc additive in that oil, or change it out altogether. Here's my reasoning: The go-to oil for the engine is AMSOIL AMO [High Zinc] 10w40, which has a Zinc content of 1378ppm. The Pennzoil Premium 10w30 you used in the video has a Zinc content of 651ppm. Since this engine was designed for high revving, I'd consider changing that oil of yours out for something that will provide better lubrication for the cam lobes. After all, replacing the cams requires pulling the engine like you would for the Touareg starter. If anything, let that be your motivator.
That all being said, I loved the video! Thanks for rescuing this beauty. Great color.
The missing power key sounds like a job for The Lock Picking Lawyer.
Or step mom. 😂
Or just hot wire it behind the key slot, and leave it always on
You can rekey these old GM locks yourself.
I love the lock picking lawyer. Good stuff
One mote time to show that it is not a fluke
About time you uploaded a video sam. I probably speak for a lot of us 😂. We've been waiting patiently.
More to come!
Hey Sam, great video! Love the flood ZR-1 project, you really lucked out on that one. Hopefully we won't have to wait for a month for the next video in this series, lol.
Lol for real.
Don't forget to flush and check brakes before attempting to drive. Even though you don't have a snow bank to drive into. Clean power steering fluid might be nice too.
or a camry to hit before the snow bank
I absolutely love Sam's videos. I love his speaking style. He doesn't just say "we changed the oil, "he says, "we WENT AND changed the oil."
Very nice! I love the power of editing. I know getting the starter replaced was a tough job. Watching it here, it's like 30 seconds! 😀. Great job on the ZR1 and I think Ben will make a great addition to the channel. He seems to be a natural! Great work!
With how much trouble this car has been it's understandable now, why it took a month to get some new content on it. I've really been looking forward to seeing how this one is going to turn out! Looks like its headed in a good direction :)
I think you made the right choice reviving this ZR1 Corvette. Love the blue. Love the sound of that engine. I'll be watching your next video on this one.
This whole series on the corvette has been amazing to watch. Love the show. Hope to see more on this classic.
You might be on a budget Sam, but just fit a new clutch. The one in there is who-knows how old. Once you have it running and driving, then you can move on to the next stage of your restoration. ZR1s are epic.
Great finally see a new video keep them coming lad, watching from Ireland,
I like how you take your time and just not rush into things, one step at a time. Way to go.
I know you've got a Pennzoil thing going on here but you really should look into putting high zinc oil in there like Valvoline VR1 or one of Amsooil's high zinc products to protect the flat tappet lifters in that LT5. It's all well documented and over discussed over on the ZR1 forums
Great success! That lift is making your work so much safer, easier.
Totally brilliant, well done, missing the more regular installments but I'll take what I'm given!
I so love the C4 version of the ZR1 and getting to see underneath one is very cool! I dig it!
I’m glad you’re back on the Vette. It’s crazy that it had that much water and is actually doing pretty well, keeping my fingers crossed
First off, the C4 ZR-1 especially the LT-5 is an incredible amazing machine that still holds several endurance records such as 24 hours straight at over 175 MPH! So cool that this one appears to be saved relatively easily. A note you might be interested in under the plenum, is that your car like many, the little gal that installed the secondary vacuum actuators bless her heart installed them 180 degrees out. If you notice in the video, the actuator arm is in an angled position; it should have been installed 180 degrees in a parallel position to the actuator mechanism. Now this is not a problem, as lots of ZR-1s were born with this condition, and have worked fine for many many miles. In fact it is better to leave them alone than to correct them if they are not replaced, because the diaphragm has been "ran in" with that direction configuration. Wishing continued success with this resurrection.
Sam, I'm a guy with zero car knowledge, but I love cars. In my business I enjoy doing a projects that cost me 10k when I know it cost everyone else 50k.This is why your show appeals to me. Its way funner to understand and implement cost savings and still achieve optimum results. Don't change this format to produce more content.
I bet that Ben could have found the sock in the intake.
Happy that you changed your attitude, i like that you're humbleas you should
So glad you’re saving this, Sam! This car is such a legend
Well, good thing Mercury Marine built that engine! Great score on the car.
Sage is a smartman. Sam goes through his boytoy's like they are stuffed oreos.
Damn you for making another episode and for making us wait for it!!!! LOVE THE BUILD!!!!
The power keys can be duplicated from pictures online, since most people have posted very clean photos they can be duplicated easily. (e.g. NEVER SHOW YOUR KEYS ONLINE!)
Loving this series! Started our '91 ZR1 yesterday and took it out of the garage. Amazing car!
Always great to have a new Samcrac video! This is without a doubt the best car channel on the internet. Sorry to hear about Sage's departure, but welcome Ben!
Lol, all popular channels on UA-cam have comments that say, "This is the best channel on UA-cam".
@OMGWTFLOL - and in this case is true! Sam consistently put out educational and entertaining, well-produced videos. As far as automotive channels go, I believe his is the best. You're welcome to disagree, of course. But if you've drilled down into the comments to read mine, you probably watched the video as well ;-)
I saw that hospital band on your wrist. Hope you’re feeling good/better Sam 👍🏼
I had a 94 LT1 and two 96 LT4 vettes. Loved them, this is a great video to remember what the cars were like :) . Thank you! Fun stuff!
My favorite part was when Sam changed the oil filter. Awesome camera view. I watched it 4 times. No kidding
Awesome car- this thing was legendary for itd time in lap times, top speed, etc.
After watching your video, changing the fuel injectors on my 1991 ZR-1 is a breeze... Great work!
Great video Sam so happy for you! Love revivals like this seems the most crucial part will be just fine it sounds great too. Can't wait to see it hit the pavement!
Glad your back with a regular video and not shorts!
This was the 1st rc car I bought in Japan!
It was a thrill. Never been around the real thing. I will some day. That 1st cold start made me cry a lil.
Spent 2 days on that thing. Painted it blue just like the cover. I love America
Sam my name is Bob and I'm out of Montana. I've been a wrencher for over 45 years. When you care to add a stabilizer or enhancer to the fuel. The most efficient, best stabilizing product is isopropyl alcohol. Usually, 95%. It also cleans the entire system at the same time. Give it a try next time.
I have done this exact job. Sam is right; it is NO FUN! But neither is always having to park on a hill so you can bump start the car in gear. The ZR-1 Corvette is possibly my least favorite car to work on because of the way it's packaged. Read the history on the car and you'll understand why it is the way that it is, but it results in a car that is simply miserable to work on. But when they're running right they are SO very sweet to drive. Unlike any other American car I've experienced.
For manual gearbox, you can use diesel for cleaning it, run it lifted through gears for a few minutes and change it to oil.
These c4 ZR1s are tough as hell , they were called king of the hill for a reason!
For cleaning drain holes like yours and many others, a tuba cleaning brush works great. Especially in cases that the drain has a tube running from it.
Best Thing in My Life knowing you guys saved this one.
Love it! Never seen someone so happy that the starter motor was stuffed!
This was a super fun and satisfying video! Car is coming together well.
Sage done hit a No call no show🥴🤣 my boy said he want a raise sam or he’s going on strike lol 🤣🤣 he witnessed to many OSHA violations lol
I used to hear the older guys say about filling a sitting motor up with diesel/kerosene. Let it sit and run the oil pump. They then drain, then fill with trans fluid then let sit, spin oil filter and then drain and finally use cheap oil, fire up for about 30 minutes and then drain and put hood oil in. I asked why and they said the diesel cleaned the harsh and broke down, the trans was a great cleaner and then cheap oil to get all the pre flush garbage out then the hood oil. This was motors sitting in junkyards for years. Never did this myself but always wanted to see it work.
Let’s go Ben! Seems like an upgrade.
Great to see you posting videos again Sam!!!!!👍
The "power key" system can be bypassed by grounding the blue & white wire out of the green ecm connector.
Very cool brother. I actually live in fort myers and work in and around all of the places that were damaged. These cars were absolutely flooded and most of them were pushed around by the storm surge. I saw a lot of them getting towed away after the storm and it was sad. Super cool you found this steal.
I am always so excited to see your videos. Thanks, and congrats on the startup.
Really enjoyed this one, great team chaps. I'm picking a little one up from Gillingham in the morning
Well played Sam giving the fans a new video, love the content keep it up and can’t wait for the next video
Glad to see he got the ZR1 running. 👍👍👍
So cool you now have a lift. Makes the projects, the videos, and your life so much better.
To find the correct resistance could you put a potentiometer in line and turn it until the light goes out? Then, remove and measure resistance across the potentiometer and replace it with a matching resistor?
Hard work pays off nice video thanks for taking us along on the journey, best of luck with the test drive. 👍
That oil pump device looks cool. FYI, Amsoil gear and transmission oils come in a quart squeeze bag with a tip on it. Insert the tip in the fill hole and squeeze the bag! Very convenient. The best product available as well!
Excellent content and incredibly interesting project, great job!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Welcome back, Sam! Great video, really enjoy seeing this car. This is one of my favorites of yours so far.
Glad you like it!
Great work! Welcome to the team, Ben! 😊
PSA - FYI
That is a starter and solenoid combo. What often gets stuck is the solenoid. Hence the tapping or hammering on the body to make it unstuck.
If you take it apart you can likely clean the corrosion of the solenoid contacts. They sell kits that replace the contacts. Quite standard.
invest in a decade resistance box. its an electronic test box that allows you to dial in any combination of resistance. Just hook this into your ignition and cycle through the values and you can sort out the resistor hack in a few minutes.
Did you come straight from the hospital and go straight to workin on changing the vettes oil filter? Looks like you got a hospital bracelet on when you swapped the old one
ZR1 from that era are freaking amazing. Seen them on the roads when I was a kid.
Ben looks like a younger "The Rural Vermonter". Keep Ben around for good luck.
Ben's life just found direction! he has curiosity about mechanical stuff, tenacity to fix ito\ and I assume some skills. not many young people are compelled to pursue that craft. its a useful craft.!!! ben knows stuff!! the world needs more people like ben!!
Come on sam, more content, I'm always watching you, love the way you make moves!
More to come!
This series has me all excited. Appreciate the videos brother. ❤
I broke a clutch loose once by having the truck outside, pointing forward, clear of obstructions. Jacked the rear end up. Started the wheels forward in 3rd. Depressed the clutch (slave and bearing was working properly).. then dropped it to the ground. It pop loose 👍🏻.. I had previously tried pulling it. Not sure why the pulling didn’t work. It was and old farm truck that cut out on us playing in our creek. 😮🫣 we towed it back home and it sat for a month or two.. we did the same as you in the clean up 😂 no modules to worry about back then.. it ran for several years. If I remember correctly, the clutch crapped out pulling a hay trail the second summer after our flooding event. 🤫🤭🤨 I am interested to see how you break the clutch loose. Wishing you luck..
Regarding the power key, a locksmith ought to be able to make you one from the photo in an ebay listing or wherever they are selling them.
Sam I LOVE your content always, but why so little of it lately? We NEED more Sam.
I can imagine the feeling when that engine finally ran by itself, good job!
So do you have a final verdict on your ZR1?? I'm super curious!! Lol dude that would be so badass if you ended up with a decent $10,000 ZR1!!! I'm pulling for you guys!!! Conquer this beast!!!
Hell yeah brother! Wait, wrong Florida Man! Kidding! Great content Sam! Keep it coming.
A key indicator that the starter motor was at fault, when you tried to crank the engine the lights dimmed on the center panel, this indicates a significant current draw, that indicated that the starter is being energised, similarly if a wiper motor or window motor has failed you will also get a dimming effect(to a lesser extent though), this is only true when the engine is off though. Turning the headlight's on will also indicate a current draw if a motor is being energised but seized or faculty. If there is a relay or wiring fault you won't draw very much current so you won't experience the dimming if lights
Okay UA-cam suggests this channel and the first line is about pumping filling and fluid exchange on a ste......you had me at church.
“Pumping filling and fluid exchanges…..” COMEDY GOLD!😂🤣😂🤣😆😅😂🤣
Always enjoy Corvette content. Really seems like you might luck out. I hope you do save this one. I'd daily it after you get it running.
Most exspensive engine upgrade for any manufacture is the zr-1 engine, base corvette was around $32000 and to get the zr1 was an additional 31k almost doubling the price an additional 5k in yellow
I think that it's nice that you give your younger stepbrothers jobs around your place.
This one was very satisfying. So happy that this one will be back on the road and not parted out by some other buyer
Only watch your videos if the step-mom is in them . Such a sweet caring dear .
Been waiting for this update, well done on getting it to fire, can't wait for the next upload.
Run diesel fuel through the transmission to flush. Same with the engine use a Hudson sprayer filled with diesel fuel next time you pull a oil pan off to assess flood damage and Hudson spray diesel up into the rotating assembly.
Glad you got a lift, much easier to watch now lol, nice job!
I'm almost finished rebuilding my V10. Good times.
Always enjoy your videos. I noticed the hospital band. Reminds me of the ones you get when you have a child and your dad. Congratulations on the baby.
