    For the second video. I’m a bmw master tech 15 years. I’m going to try again. The hard lines you looked at. Following the outline of the battery pack and near the right rear of the vehicle. The mounting tab on the line cracks at the weld it leaks from there. There is a mounting bracket that need to be removed along with almost all the under body panels and a structural mount. It’s a very very tiny crack but you will see it. It only leaks when it get hots so a cold vehicle pressure test won’t show. And if you do a hot vehicle pressure test you don’t see it cause the pressure goes down any way since the vehicle is cooling down. My dealer actually put a motor in a i8 for the exact same reason.

    I used to run a factory that made radiators with plastic tanks for one of the Big 3 in the Midwest. We supplied 1 million radiators to our customer without a defect over about 7 years. We tested to 30PSI using air. Looking at that little segment of the radiator leaking, it looks like the tank wasn't crimped onto the core very well. I'd be curious if they forgot the rubber gasket that goes between the tank and core, or if it was twisted when installed. Since you are getting a new radiator, I'd be curious to see what the core looks like under the tank. We used to have alot of issues with the flux used to solder the aluminum cores to the end plates, getting into the seal channel, causing leaks. Just bend the tabs back with a screwdriver/pair of pliers/prybar until you can take the tank loose. You might have found a factory defect.

That car needs an engine, the water pump and oil filter housing I took off were melted. The engine sounded fine so we tried to save it, there is a blockage in the engine itself somewhere and probably other places. I have nightmares of this car to this day. The previous owner could also simply say that one of the other people that bought it at auction or the numerous repair shops screwed it up. How could you prove otherwise. Also, the car was most likely still under some bumper to bumper warranty so the previous owner wouldn't be responsible for any repairs anyway. When you buy something at auction, you probably buy it as is.

    So I used to work for a DAF dealership, they're a European truck brand and are owned by PACCAR, same family as Peterbilt and Kenworth. The MX engine had some terrible issues with o-ring failure, particularly the o-rings that sealed the oil cooler. We used TURCO Plaudit to get the oil out of the coolant system. I think its original purpose was to clean home central heating system pipes. We would do a couple of flushes with it following the o-ring and cooler repair, followed by refilling the system under vacuum with OAT coolant. This might be useful for anyone who has contamination issues in their coolant system, you may not be able to get the exact product but hopefully you can find something similar in your local area. I understand that oil fired central heating isn't as popular in the Americas as it is here in the UK, but maybe your local plumber could help direct you to a similar product.

    I had an '85 Mazda RX7 (rotary engine) that had a chronic overheat problem. I tried thermostat, water pump and radiator and then took it to a dealer who couldn't figure it out either. It turned out to be a restricted exhaust from a melted catalytic converter because the air pump that blows air into the cat had failed. Rotary engines have a much higher exhaust temperature so this may not be relevant to the BMW. Just relating my experience.

    Just started watching this as it just hit my feed. I'm an MR2 owner, have been for 28 years, so I have some experience with mid engine cars. Not with BMW's so grain of salt thing. Typically, for MR2's, if the coolant reservoir is bubbling then chances are good either air in the system or head gasket failure. Coolant pressure test and bleed down test are the next go to. Again, I don't work on BMW's at all so still waiting to watch more videos to see if you all figure out what it actually was. Just posting this to see if I'm even close or not. Hope you figured it out so I'm rewarded by watching more videos LOL.

      I was thinking about this the whole time: it's a closed circuit so open it at the "beginning" ( i.e. where the cold water leaves the radiator to the engine ) and feed cold water into it with a hose or something. If water doesn't come out of the radiator, there's a a clog somewhere.
      Changing the entry point for the water up the system will surely show up where it's at.

    I ran into this problem on a VW Passat that came from the auction. A used car dealer bought it from the auction sold it knowing it was overheating. The new owner brought it to me. After diagnosis there was absolutely no circulation. Replacing the water pump an thermostat, water pump impeller was intact BTW. Bleeding the system still had zero circulation. I started looking at the radiator, I noticed the upper radiator hose clamp had been replaced. I removed the upper hose and found someone put a plastic bottle cap inside the upper hose. I removed the blockage and all was good 👍. Please check inside all the easiest hose connections for your sabbatoge. Hope you have found it by the time I post this comment.

To make sure that it was going to be an expensive sale, they removed all computers from the car…and being bankrupt they could not be charged to the deal ship who stole them (the owner did get criminally charged for theft). The replacement modules and computers plus the Bentley technician to reinstall them cost an arm and a leg.

      An old diesel mechanics trick was to place a small ball from a bearing in the fuel line. Small enough to move around in the fuel line. Ran fine at low RPM. As soon as you put a load on it the ball was sucked into a restricted part of the fuel line and shut down the engine. They did this to make you pay the bill for what ever repair you had done. Usually an engine overhaul. Guy would say I need my truck to make the money to pay you. Mechanic would do the ball trick so you would come back to get it fixed. You had to pay up for them to remove the ball. Truck would drive fine without a large load on it. But put a 60,000 lb trailer on it it would go fifty feet without falling flat on its face.

      @@bmwspeedman the problem is that in modern dealership shops, they no longer want to waste time with true diagnostics. The advent of the ECU/PCM made old school diagnostics go away. Now they only rely on their computers and what it says goes. Ironically, BMW is notorious for throwing codes. A leaking vacuum line or intake fan will throw misfire codes or o2/cat codes. The car runs fine otherwise. But nowadays the techs (mechanics, they no longer call themselves that) swear by the scanner and the computer (stuff like alldata). The digital FSMs basically will say "replace engine" if you go through a diagnostic tree and yield no results. Same for the transmission.
      In the case of this car, there is a possibility that the head is warped but not mixing with the oil. There is a chance a head gasket leaks near an exhaust port and no other part of the engine is compromised but the exhaust smoke feels damp and it overheats since the exhaust fumes are heating up the water. Keep in mind as the sabatoge idea gets explored.

    I once owned a 2007 SLK350 that threw a thermostat code. Since I was already at the dealer having the drivers side airbag replaced as part of a recall, I told them to go ahead and fix it. On that R171 engine the thermostat kind of like this i8 comes as an assembly with the housing included. The part was actually reasonable at around $135.00, but the labor was 3 hours. @samcrac have you tried using an infra-red scope to see temp differences between coolant supply and return hoses? If there's a huge temp difference in a same hose could be sign of a blockage, same for radiator.

      Yep. I agree. I am thinking it could be a blockage, maybe a deliberate one, in a pipe somewhere. Even more scary, and I hate to even suggest it, is a blockage in the water channels in the block itself. I hope that is pure paranoia.

    • @klausstock8020
      @klausstock8020 2 роки тому

      @@peterj5751 Had a full blockage once - there was no antifreeze in the coolant, and the water was frozen solidly. The thermometer didn't indicate any problems. Of course, with no water circulation, it just measures the temperature of an ice block. The first sign of trouble was that the fan/water pump/generator belt failed (since the water pump was locked, of course).
      The car was am E21 316 (note the absence of the "i"). The M10 engine survived (needed a new head gasket, though).

    I remember my father had a similar problem on a company Ford escort that had a major tendency to overheat: root cause: the thermostat opens a coolant circuit to the radiator when the coolant gets warm. Thermostat worked perfectly but the outlet hole was not open out (either not drilled or bad moulding), so the thermostat opens correctly but the coolant could not be pumped into the radiator causing the overheating.

    Head gasket is likely popped. I work on these and had one like it. Replaced half of the cooling system. Compression and leak down ok, but once it got to that magic temp it would vent out. All caused by a coolant leak another shop couldn't fix.

    • @Nefariousrouge

      To add to my story, we ran the car in sport mode and it never overheated, as it commanded the thermostat to open for a lower temp (has electronic control).

  • @brianr101010
    @brianr101010 3 роки тому

    You may have an "oil like" substance in the coolant system. I drive diesel dump trucks and one of them had an oil intercooler rupture that dumped a lot of oil in the coolant system. We flushed it out or so we thought and some stayed hidden in the nooks and crannies and began turning into a tar-like material after all the overheating the problem was that peices would regularrly break off and clog up the system to overheatthen maybe eventually melt and move back out of sight. We had to strip and replace almost the entire cooling system and eventually the engine was dismanted and the coolant channels were individually cleaned by hand. Major pain in the ass and to me the truck never seemed to ever have the same power again.

    Those radiators are junk. They are used on numerous vehicles with the plastic cap and plastic bottom. I owned a Camaro that ran the same type of radiator and it ended up leaking between the top plastic cap and the aluminum body of the radiator. If you can purchase an all aluminum radiator without the plastic end caps I would suggest you go with that. I don’t even understand why any manufacturer would use plastic on a cooling system that can build up pressure under hot temps.
