BMW Mini Cooper S Rear Rally Suspension Upgrade - Edd China's Workshop Diaries 17

- Опубліковано 22 лип 2021
- My mate Neil Burgess and I continue upgrading the suspension on his 2007 BMW Mini Cooper S rally car. Having improved the front by adding some increased caster bushes, adjustable camber strut tops and a pair off adjustable Ohlins shock absorbers we then had to modify our freshly refurbished subframe to make it all fit! With that all done and ready for setting up, this week we turn our attention to the rear suspension and set out to make the rear toe and camber adjustable. But will this thoroughly modern Mini be as easy to upgrade as you'd think?...

This show is more honest than WD in the sense that on that show they mostly showed the takes where it all goes right, whereas here they show the complications, the fidgeting, the try try again. Which is very appreciated.
Totally agree
Yep reality 👍🏻
Have you seen the south main auto repair channel ?
@@BrainHurricanes I have. Eric is an incredible mechanic. He's like an American version of Edd.....just a little shorter.
Shout out to Vice Grip Garage for realism (and hilarious personality).
Much better than the "new" Wheeler Dealers. Ed is honest. No phony talk. No cute skits. WD has turned into a situation comedy and soap opera. Keep it real Ed, that's what we want.
Absolutely agree
Agreed💯%
I used to build the rear suspension assembly up at Cowley BMW Mini so interesting seeing it all coming apart.
We need a “All of that is a job for another day” shirt
i swear these repairs move slower than the plot of dragon ball Z. it's still fun to watch tho
@@briangoldberg4439 i felt that WAYY too much
@@briangoldberg4439 The worst thing is they only did one side. Next week they're doing the same thing to the rear left suspension. To be fair that is the reality of working on old cars, especially in a colder climate like the UK.
@@briangoldberg4439 haha. Thats such a great analogy. I enjoy them to. It’s like Edd never missed a beat when the left WD
With a brew under the slogan!!
Manual says, 'undo bolts and remove brake caliper'. Murphy's law says, 'Hope bolts come undone and spend ages trying to remover the brake caliper'. Love the reality of this show.
Highlight of the week: Edd saying 'Hi, welcome to the workshop!'
Downer of the week: Edd saying 'That's a job for another day'.
Actually seeing the true difficulties, travails, problems, mistakes, faffing and/or stubbornness (delete as applicable!) that's truly involved in working on restoring/repairing/modifying a car, is what makes this the best channel around. It actually makes me feel so much better knowing that I'm not the only one who goes through these issues, that THIS is the reality of proper 'spannering', and not to feel so disheartened watching other shows, where EVERYTHING just seems to slide, move or unbolt so smoothly!
Cannot get enough of this show. Makes my day.
I'm watching the full series of WD, again, and I can see that Edd has already checked out in his mind after the change to Discovery. They've added flash-forward segments to add to the flash-backs. Edd's total time working on the car is likely 12 minutes in the entire show. What a waste of talent and actual worthwhile television. I'm glad you're here now Edd, where we can sit with our eyes glued to the screen while you take out a single bush. Keep up the great work!
It's good to see a pro like Ed goes through all the same kind of BS I do when doing a job like this.
Ed, I hope when this project is done you can work in a small montage of this bad boy racing.
Appreciate the camera work there - allowing us to keep an eye on the pressure gauge whilst the chaps were trying to press out the bush. Really helps to make the viewer feel involved, great direction.
Hi Ed, love your show, fantastic watching you actually carry out all the work rather than starting and then jump cutting to the finished result. Brilliant. Your personality and presentation are first class. I am writing this while enjoying a lovely mug of tea in my new Ed china mug I bought. Thanks again, look forward to each Friday's episode.
Nice one Ed! Love the way you explain everything.
This is the highlight of my Friday night. Under an hour of mechanical boffingness.
Better than argueing with the misses
Better than any rubbish on normal telly
Omg!! You saved my friday!! Thanks for taking your time for these videos!! Greetings from MEX 🇲🇽
Love this show already and only a few episodes in. The way that there’s more than 2 or 3 things wrong with the car and the detail that goes in to repairing/replacing. I watch WD thinking “yeah I could totally buy a substandard car and do it up and sell it on”. The new show with Edd actually opened my eyes seeing that it’s not actually like that. For instance this mini, replacing the bushes with the press….
Washing the inside of the RR fuel tank and replacing the fuel lines…. Then making the magic switch to test the pump then working out that the plug cables needed switching… love it
Another great start to the weekend and it's comforting to know that even the experts sometimes have a problem with replacing bushes; I've done them all on a 23 year old Mercedes SL and every single one put up a fight and a reciprocating saw is a godsend.
Did the subframe rubbers on my E30. Really time consuming. Heat gun helped as well for the rubbers without a metal sleeve.
This feels like home to watch. Enjoying it so much every week!
Once the mini project is complete I hope we get to see a video of him racing with it !!!!! PLEASE 😁
I can’t tell you how much I dread Edd saying the words “And that’s a job for another day.” NOOOooo, don’t stop now! I just love seeing the processes. The hits and the misses. Not just seeing the end result where it all looks like magic.
Thanks Ed, great show, Im sure I am not the only one to miss you on TV
Watch you from RUSSIA, Edd, you are awesome...
@@fullycharged9241 Hello hello)))
Hello from Norway 🇸🇯 Edd is the best👍
"Wait until you get a load of them Italian birds!"
"Are they big? I like'em big!"
😂😂😂
Thanks for what you do Edd! So thankful to see you doing your mechanical magic! Absolutely gorgeous Mustang BTW!!! Best wishes!
As a teacher I really like the way you explain and show your progress. Even for a non mechanic like me it makes sense and is easy to follow and understand the progress. I have learned a lot about engines by watching your videos. Good job!
Edd Du bist einfach der beste 👌👏👍🏻Dank Dir 🙋♂️!
I reckon for every 10 parents watching this, you inspire at least 1 child to become a mechanic. Good to see you back Edd.
Great stuff... loved it. Glad you wore those protection glasses, especially using the stanley knife. My brother lost an eye 2 days after the tip splintered off into his eye cutting formica.
Love the gold '66 mustang, not sure that was an original colour though, but looks fantastic. I had 2 in the early 70's, a '66 6cyl.4 speed manual convertible in mid blue metalic and a '66 289 gt coupe, 3 speed manual in silver....... 2 totaly different cars, just adored them.👍🇬🇧
It does baffle me how much Edd still uses hand tools where he could use power tools to make life easier.
Undoing those calliper carrier bolts was crying out for a battery ratchet 😂
Great vid. I’m enjoying my Saturday mornings watching you guys under the car. Fascinating
Really loving the workshop diaries, please keep them coming. Regards from Bayern.
Well done edd great to see you back and I loved it 😍
Very good quality video.
CHIYNA!!! MISS THOSE WHEELER DEALER DAYS .GLAD TO SEE YOU HAVE YOUR OWN SHOW👍
Just went through all this installing urethane bushings in my ‘06 Acura RSX (Honda Integra), all around. Used a hole saw to remove the centers, then the Sawzall on the bushing sleeve. What a job.
That bush didn't want to leave its home. Nice work. Can't wait to see it all come together.
I’m thankful y’all are working on an R56.
Its nice to have the genius mechanic back. Edd👍🇦🇺
Awesome! More upgrades and suspension setup. Nice share Edd.
I absolutely love this show, thanks Edd!
Another excellent vid Edd, Neil and the team, Thankyou guys! Very informative. I just wish I had a workshop as well equipped as yours 😩😁👍🏻
That's a spin-in brake caliper, Edd
Great work Edd. Well impressed
Edd, I have just one word for you….EYE PROTECTION…..it will keep whatever is falling as you remove overhead fasteners out of your eyes……
Plus hearing protection when using noisy equipment.
Thats two words 😂👀👁
Absolutely, I keep thinking he should be wearing his googles when he is under that car!
& hair ! You are your own USP - not necessary to have hair in your eyes at the bench press Edd when glancing to camera !
Thank you Edd...
Good to see the mechanical work in detail..
Great video Ed, love the way it’s edited keep them coming
Love how involved these videos are at every step! And no other music or anything to disturb the video! Although I'm sure people would love a 'peaceful' type video with gentle music in the background of you working paired with the mechanic sounds etc. Look up 'Dream Build MTB' videos by Gee Milner, you'll get the idea! Keep it up mate!
The best show. I love it Greetings Edd from Greece
Aguante Edd !!!! De un Argentino 🇦🇷
,desde Vigo,España....
I support you. you deserve to have your own TV show and a contract with a TV channel. Greetings from France
'Like Benny Hill on The Italian Job.' I watched a lot of Benny Hill growing up. Hilarious
Love these vids of Edd's. Was thinking it should be on tv but then would have to suffer adverts!
Cheers for the advice on my Austin Gipsy Edd. Has been an awesome little project to take on as there is only a handful of these in NZ and can't wait to restore it back to its former glory and back on the road
These guys sell new wiring harness for your Gipsy, they have a good reputation. www.autosparks.co.uk/austin-gipsy-wiring-harness-set-2
@@simongrattan9695 thats great thankyou Simon. I will definitely be looking into that as an option 👍
@@truckinwithaaron40 excellent and good luck with the restoration, the Gipsy is great and underrated 4x4.
Just give this man his own TV show now
Great video as always you would teach anyone about fixing cars by your videos edd
De regreso Edd súper saludos México 🇲🇽
thankyou Edd
I have worked a lot on heavy construction equipment with pins and bushings. If we didn’t have the right size hydraulic pressing tools we used to MIG-weld the bushings inside. When the bushing cools down it shrinks and it’s easy to knock it out. The same method works on motorcycles and cars.
Glad to see even a pro can run a ram through the middle of a rubber bushing. Been there, done that. At least that one was pretty easy to remove!
best show on UA-cam hands down
WAY TO GO!! love it keep them coming!! This is better then watching Friday night smackdown WWE
This reminds me of doing top and bottom ball joints on a disco 2. Hacksaw and cup type tool though. Two opposing cuts works better than taking a small section out as the c shape would still be pushing out.
Missed you Ed! Keep up.the good work brother
Ed, good morning from México.
Excelent job an vídeo.
Congratulations!
Yes the shop press is essential, remember the many hours of pounding and vice tricks I’ve used to accomplish these type of things when I was young and ambitious and tool poor!
I would like to see a press that could do both springs and bushes, less space required and could be less cost than two presses.
I quite fancy buying and going up a gen 1 BMW Mini Cooper S. Video saved.
Edd's new show - Extension, Extension, Extension.
I love your show Edd, it’s far better than, WD , you show all you need to know
Well done! 👍😁
Brilliant. I wish I had the tools to do more involved work like this.
And a lift. Soo much easier.
Wow I love the color of the mustang
Brilliant video again!
Spot on again edd
"Hi, welcome to the workshop" ❤️
Great edd. Quality in front of the camera and I can see how you like to be quite detailed about things. Prefer that to heavy editing and brushing over certain mechanical issues. 👍👍 (Mike's been busy to you know 🤔
Top job Edd
You are an absolute legend
Big fan Edd. FYI, re the rear lower coilover thread that's been helicoiled: that happens because the steel bolt is a tri-lobe "self-tapping" bolt, which cuts the thread into aluminium, so they are technically single use only. So replacing the trailing arm is not the end of the story. Get yourself a keensert, put it in the new trailing arm, and then it makes it serviceable. Otherwise every time you remove the lower bolt, you're making the aluminium thread weaker
Smart Work Guy's! My Observation sez he is not quite done spending yet. New Rear Brake Pads and Brake Discs, New Rear Anti Roll Bar and or at least the End Links. I bought Bicycle Wheel Hub Thin Wrenches to tackle Sway Bar End Links that do not have a Hex/Torx in the stub end to counter hold. Wrench On...
Just read a comment here and he is spot on what he says. That you show the dramas and how to get around them. Not like the polished WD show.
just saw the Tokyo Olympic opening ceremony, pretty cool 3D drone performance they had, and now the excitement continues... thx Edd.
This is like hanging out in the garage doing things with friends. There's no exact science to anything. It may or may not go to plan and that's what makes this interesting. Sometimes you have to fab something to make it work.
Wish I had that Milwaukee impact driver when I had my race car!
I use a big c clamp positioned correctly to compress the caliper back so it will slip off the rotor when there is a ridge like that.
Perfect friday entertainment.
60s cars are just the best. I want chrome bumpers!!!
The more early episode of WD with the green Jag Coupe on it…
Look into lighting and camera angles on it..
They are where the iconic methods are..
👍
Regarding the pressing out of the bushings (27:00): I have a similar problem with Saab and Opel / Vauxhall Vectra wishbones. There is a special tool for this that is pushed in between, rests directly on the bushing and supports the two sides of the wishbone against each other. Works fine. It is just a thick steel plate or U with the proper thickness.
Buen trabajo Edd saludos desde Argentina.
Excellent as per usual 👏
Yup, unfortunately, sawing is the way to go with these bushes. Same thing with most bmw thrust arm bearings. Nice job!
Eddie, have a look at the anti-roll bar rubbers and noticeably where they are mounted.... too close to the bend. If you slot the bracket that holds the rubber bushes you can move them away from the bend. BMW fixed this on the GP. You could also upgrade the anti-roll bar to a thicker one at the same time, if you feel so inclined 😉👍
Keep up the good work lads.
SALUDOS EDD .UN ABRAZO DESDE COPIAPO,ATACAMA,CHILE.EXELENTES TUS VIDEOS.GRACIAS COLEGA MECANICO.
Great job
You are the man Ed 😊😊👍👍.
Hi edd when you was pressing out old bushes very difficult that you don't need it to reuse. I think you should have use heat to break rust out and some wd40 bushes would came out easily.
I would like to see the series, continue on to show fitting all the electronics, Neil Rallying and Ed will you be navigating for him?
I know this is old, but maybe I'll get a response. That art on the wall over your shoulders includes what I assume is a poster or print that is reminiscent of my 68 Mustang I passed on to the next generation. I like it. Maybe if Edd pops in, he could glance for a label, or maybe somebody else recognizes it. I know I could do an image search, but expect I'd have to expect millions.
Seeing it again, I think that is 67. Anyway, I still like it.
Hi CJ, We have been busy making a whole load more of those pictures and they we soon be adorning the walls and be available to purchase as pictures, T-shirts and maybe even mugs… we’ll let you know when we’re ready.
