  • I got to thinking one day that I might be able to cobble together a pocket wizard-based remote shutter release cable for my Nikon D300. It was actually really easy, and just took a spare shutter release cable and some 1/8" audio cable.

Thanks for the tip, this video gave me the info I needed to make a cable that is identical to PocketWizard N90M-ACC which allows me to use some of pocketwizard's new features!

I needed something similar when using a Mamiya RotoFrame Flash Bracket w/ left handle electric AF, Meter & shutter release cable in handle. The Nikon version pistol grip 2 cable was just a combined. All on in the 10 pin socket but I needed a separate AF start so made my own to adapt to the Mamiya 646 AF-D cable
    Awesome wireless fix

just to add to that, I get pre-release function when I activate the zone on my transmitter as well as half press on the trigger gives autofocus function. 100% identical performance and so simple to make! Cost $3.50 if you use an ebay remote trigger and a audio cable from monoprice

@001FJ: It should work with any nikon camera that has the 10-pin remote release port. This video sorta is the step by step tutorial. I built the thing totally by trial and error and don't really remember exactly what went where. As far as the parts used, it was just an old 10-pin remote cable, and some stereo audio cable. Just connected all the wires by trial and error till I got something that worked. Good luck!

@Jigsaw3477; yup, about $20. I think the cheapo remote shutter control cable is around $15, and the audio cable shouldn't be more than a few dollars. Also check out the other comments on how to wire it to get auto-focus. I haven't tried that yet but it's worth a shot. Good luck!

@JoshuaCrippsPhoto Jeah :) It works with Cactus V5 anyway, but the pins/wires are the same, so it sould not matter :)

Using a similar concept I made a remote shutter cable for my lumix m43... except mine is not wireless, I soldered everything and put it in a small plastic box, all cost around 5$/€ (later I reinforced the stuff with hot glue, just in case - soldering hair thin wires is not easy)

@JoshuaCrippsPhoto Jeah, I was searching the web for something like this, and when I saw yours, I did it, but I tried some other connecting - and came up with this :) It works on my Cactus V5 anyway, but the pins/wires should be the same no matter the system :)

Do you know if this will work with the D700? Could you put together a tutorial of how to do it step-by-step? I am not sure what parts you used and what goes where.

    HEy!
If you instead wire the two "naked" wires in the audio cable together, and that wire to the white cable in the shutter remote, and then the other two cables to the white/red you will get autofocus on half press, just as with the usual remote :)

Can you make something like this to trigger the video function on the Nikon D300s through the 10 pin socket?

Any remote like this will simply replicate the functionality of a wired remote, so if you can activate the video feed on a D300s through a regular remote (can't remember enough about the D300s to know if you can) then this should work. Good luck!

So instead of walking around with a little cable and button you now need a truck to transport your camera and cable/shutter cable.

Is it possible to do the same thing with a camera data cable with a regular shutter release?

What is it that you're trying to do?

I have a fujifilm finepix S1500, but cannot find any remote release for it, I was just wondering if it is possible to make one by combining a data cable plug for the camera with a regular remote release, as I have seen some on ebay for $0.99.

noirnegro Ah, I see. That will only work if the data cable can be used to trigger an exposure. My guess is no, unfortunately, since the data cable is probably a completely separate system than the trigger mechanism. I would email the fols at Fuji and see if they can offer any solutions since there doesn't seem to be a remote available. Good luck!

Why not just use cat5 cable? that way you can do a 1:1 on all the wires. You can also place female cat5 plugs on both ends of the shutter cord, and then use any length cat5 you want, since it's so cheap and abundant..

Hello... does enyone knows the cable coding for the Nikon remote TC 2
    www.dhgate.com/product/timer-remote-cord-shutter-release-for-nikon/112937117.html
I want to cut it and do my Pocket Wizard cable but since this TC2 has more features I just want to use the trigger pair.

It be a good idea to sort out the camera you was recording with first! As at least half your vid was out of focus 😞 👎. Then any other tips, ideas or D.I.Y jobs you do can be seen clearly. 😮👏
