  • BigNate84.com - In this video I'll show you how to make a USB remote shutter release for a Canon PowerShot camera for less than $6. All you need is a USB cable and a flashlight keychain. The camera featured in this video is a Canon SX30is, however this design should work for most PowerShot cameras with CHDK installed. If you would like a PDF, JPEG, PNG of my wiring diagram you can email or text the words "USB Remote Shutter 0001" to BigNate84HowTo@gmail.com, and a link to download the file will be sent to your smart phone or computer. I'm starting to experiment with creative uses for QR codes so you can simply scan the QR code and hit send if you have a QR scanner app on your phone. Let me know if you have any questions about this project or CHDK.

    Thank you! I appreciate the feedback. These days everyone is so used to Hollywood productions sometimes I wonder if people notice how much time goes into my videos behind the scenes, since I'm just a guy producing out of my basement lol. Thanks for noticing. I did 95% of the shots with the SX30is. The blurry close up shots of the SX30is menu screen were taken with a Flip Ultra HD, which has no manual focus, hence the blurry parts. Glad you liked the small form factor. Thanks for the comment!

    Thank you. I was also surprised when I saw how easy it was. It can be more complicated if you want the remote to do more things, but I like to keep things simple. Enjoy.

    Here's what I would do... 1) make sure your turning the camera on with the play mode button. 2) verify that you used stuffit expander to unzip the files. 3) verify that safari is not auto unzipping the files in the background. 4) verify that the "PS.FI2" file is in the root directory. 5) Try to download an older version of CHDK. Let me know if you were able to get it working after you try those options. Keep at it you'll get it eventually!

    Thanks Sam! It's awesome for starting and stopping video recordings as well as taking long exposures when you don't want to bump the camera and cause the photo to come out blurry.

    Makes sense.
    If you decide to go deeper, the chdk wikia has page called Prepare_your_SD_card should get you through the SD card formatting issues. And to answer your question about controlling video with your remote, take a look at this CHD wikia page USB_Remote_V2#Video.
    If you get stuck, post in the CHDK forum - there are always a few people there who can help.

    Good question. I haven't tried the "bulb mode" approach. I believe with the PowerShot SX30is and CHDK the same thing can be achieved with exposure time overrides. For example I was able to set the shutter to stay open for 30 minutes.

    Nice video - well done!
    Be aware that the currently available versions of CHDK have different USB remote options now. A lot more feature, more flexability and much easier to understand than the version you are using. Your hardware will still work as is.
    Also, if I can make suggestion, watching the video, I'd strongly suggest you convert to SD card lock method of auto-booting. Doing the "firmware update" method every time gets old really quickly.

  • @BigNate84
    @BigNate84  11 років тому

    No. This is designed to work specifically with Canon PowerShot cameras that have a special third party software installed on the memory card. The third party software is called CHDK. There is a chance this type of remote could work on other cameras but it would just depend on the camera and there are no grantees.

    I'm back. I am using a 12 volt radio controlled relay and because I had room in the box I used 8 NMH AAA batteries for the relay. I isolated 3 batteries in the pack for the camera and although the voltage was only 3.9 the camera functioned fine. This is the voltage of three NMHs fully charged. I think I may go with regular AAA as they probably will last their shelf life. These NMHs self discharge so recharging may be annoying. These relays are cheap and lots of them on the net. Anyway it works.

    As hinted in my most recent post, newer CHDK software supports video control via your USB remote without programming.

    I am late to the CHDK game and I know this video is a few years old, but I have been trying to find a video or at least a clear explanation of the daisy-chain multiple cameras process. I have yet to find a video or tutorial from someone who has successfully done this. I would love to see the setup involved and how it works. Your video is only one I've found that even makes mention of this. So if you feel like revisiting CHDK, I'd love a multi-camera sync tutorial!

    Thanks for the tip. Someday I'll get around to upgrading my firmware version. For now it does everything I need it to do so I'm not too anxious to try the new version. I had a lot of trouble with the card lock boot method so I just followed the path of least resistance. Also I opted for firmware update because I share my camera with my wife who has no interest in CHDK. I like having it hidden in the background so it can't be toggled into CHDK mode by mistake. Good suggestions, Thanks!

    You are my new best friend! I am suddenly very interested in downloading the latest and greatest CHDK firmware! I may have to create a new video displaying all the new features. From what I read in the last 30 seconds the new build looks to be 10 times better. Thanks for convincing me! I totally missed your "hint".

    I found a battery box with an on/off switch that holds three AAA batteries (a total of 4.5 volts) and has a USB cable with a female connector. Then I just connected a USM-to-USB mini cable and plugged the other end into my A720 IS. Turning the switch on functions as a half-press, and turning it off takes the photo.

  • @BigNate84
    @BigNate84  12 років тому

    Actually that is what I am trying to figure out now. That was my goal when I created this remote. I have not looked into it enough yet. Some programming will probably be required to assign the USB port to control the video record button. I will post another video if I figure it out. For now I don't have anything to offer.

  • @BigNate84
    @BigNate84  12 років тому

    Thanks. A diode would be a good improvement just to prevent the voltage from flowing in the wrong direction if the batteries are put in backwards. Its not necessary though. If you look up the camera features page on the CHDK wiki you can find out if this will work with the SX150.

  • @BigNate84
    @BigNate84  12 років тому

    The type of battery shouldn't matter as long as the batteries add up to the correct voltage. Three 1.5 volt batteries of any variety should do the trick. It's common to use button cell "watch style" batteries because they have a small form factor. If you can fit AAA or AA in your switch housing they should work just fine.

    Hey there, Big Nate, This is a fine presentation about making your own remote control shutter release using CHDK. But that just releases the shutter on the shutter speed set by the camera, right? Suppose a person wanted to create a "bulb mode" shutter release for starry-night shots? Is there a way to keep the shutter open indefinitely (5-6 minutes or so) for a good, wide angle star shot while also using a cheap barn-door type equatorial mount to follow the turn of the earth? Thanx!!

    Just curious if this works for a canon PowerShot SX110 IS have been looking all over for a remote control for this camera and it does not exist. This would be great if it worked. I did download the chdk software your tutorial was great on that. Thanks so much.

    • @BigNate84
      @BigNate84  10 років тому

      I'm not 100% sure about the SX110. I would take a look at the USB port and see if it's a standard USB port. If it is a standard USB port the remote shutter should work. If it's a USB/HDMI port it may or may not work. Id' have to do some trial and error testing to know for sure.

    • @BigNate84
      @BigNate84  8 років тому

      +Cesar Diaz there's only one way to find out! The small batteries are nice, because they are small and easy to conceal. Voltage should remain the same with the big AA's. Did you try it out yet?

    • @cesardiaz7428
      @cesardiaz7428 8 років тому

      +BigNate84 Yes we did. There was no problem at all. We use a bigger flashlight, it uses 3 AAA bateries, adding a total of 3.6 v. and as long as I know the current can be higher than what it actually requires, and the flashlight it is only oging to take what it needs. The only problem that I see, is that we do not get the camera to focus before it takes the shoot, it does focus, but just an instant before it takes the shoot. We do not really control it, like your do. But besides that we are very happy.

    Big Nate, I also have the SX30is with CHDK (thanks for all vids to help with that) and my wife bought me a shutter release for christmas opteka.com/rft40.aspx, however it did not come with the usb mini, only a 2.5mm jack and couple other adapters. My question is, can I without harming my camera either buy an adapter from the 2.5mm jack to the usb mini, or cut the one that came with it and connect on a usb mini? Should the voltage be safe for my camera or does that differ with camera model?

    • @BigNate84
      @BigNate84  10 років тому

      Lucky you! Congrats on the remote shutter. Since it isn't Christmas yet you must have peeked at your presents early! Anyway, the remote shutter you have is designed for DSLR camera's. The SX30is is only a point and shoot type camera. I don't think it's going to work. I would not advise you to alter the 2.5mm plug because USB devices/ports are expecting to see 5 volts. The receiving end of the device you have makes 12 volts. So there is a voltage mismatch. That said, if you do your homework and your looking for an electrical project i'm sure there are adapters/components you can rig together to get it working, but unless you enjoy tinkering with this stuff it might be more trouble than it's worth.

    Hi... very cool tutorial. I came across it awhile back and resought it today as I have that camera and my biggest issue is a lack of shutter remote. I have a disability which makes holding the camera where I want and clicking the shutter difficult. I remote I could put between my lips and trigger once I've focused on my subject would be great. I'm trying to avoid dropping a bunch of money on a new canon just for that if I can get a homemade solution. Can you rig a simple usb end to an existing remote such as this and achieve the same result you got?
    www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/70561-REG/Canon_2469A002_RS_60E3_Remote_Switch.html
    Or is there another store bought remote that could be hacked similarly? I don't have the dexterity to do you mod myself... have to bug a friend for help... so I'm looking for quick solution with durability so it won't be likely to come apart. Any thoughts in hindsight? Feel free to msg me directly. thx
