I’ve been wearing all black for about a year and love the freedom, mystery, and protection I feel with all black. It feels like a blank slate, an anonymous mask, an expression of grief and love. 🖤 it also looks sickening imo lol, esp with a lovely drape or a curious mix of shapes & textures.
Sometimes, high end garments are dyed with natural dyes, black can be dark brown Cheaper fabrics never have.. and black pants/trousers usually always fade after a lot of wear, even then best fabrics designed never to fade
I definitely do want to add though, that when it comes to color theory, some people like myself, no matter how pale or dark they are, don't look good in a rich saturated black. For some of us. Brown blacks are our go-to color. People who look really great and really cool colors, blue blacks and gray blacks can look stunning on them. You are right though fabric quality definitely matters. So I don't necessarily think that dirty colors are bad because on the right person, those colors can really enhance their natural features and bring out certain qualities that they have that you may not notice as much when they wear all black because all black can look really harsh in a lot of people, or rather a very true Rich inky black out. Looks incredibly harsh in a lot of people. If you don't believe me, think about those blocky thick black eyebrows. A lot of women drew on their faces during peak Instagram makeup, those eyebrows don't look bad on the right person, on someone whose face is not built to handle a thick, heavy ultra black eyebrow, those eyebrows look very jarring.
Thank you so much for the video! I like how Yohji Yamamoto once answered the question why he decided to work with black. He actually said that he chose to work with black because there are so many visual triggers currently which surround us, and he would not like it if his clothes disturbed our eyes even more with busy prints and bright colours. I can very much relate to this thought, and also I love how he shows this kind of care for people's sensory nervous system😂❤
My British colleague (60+) always wore black head to toe, very stylish. Suddenly last winter she switched to cream, what a transformation! She looked much younger and so many people congratulated her that she was actually rather upset. Was she looking so bad in black? The truth is that black suits people who have a golden suntan or porcelain skin, but in winter we have sallow or ashy complexions and black accentuates that.
I’ve been there 😅 I went through a dark oversized clothing (depressed) phase as a teen years ago. My dark circles were massively emphasized and I looked very gaunt. I look younger now than I did then!
I can see myself coming back to this video for inspiration every so often when I feel like something’s not working with a black piece of clothing. You have created a timeless reference
I used versions of black rather than pure black: specifically extremely dark versions of taupe and slate. The idea being that you would use the contrasts between warm and colder shades of dark grey to create a balanced type of personal style. Something like Coffee is used to highlight taupe, while a cooler light grey is used to highlight slate grey. The challenge being to find colors that can exist in natural pigments, rather than produced synthetically. I had been somewhat influenced by Sisters Of Mercy, The Cure, and The Banshees at some point. But that isn't specifically why I get for dark taupe and slate though.
Wearing and admiring black in different textures for over 10 years just cz nothing else gives me this sense of comfort. And, as weird as it sounds, once I caught myself starring at a person’s trousers in such a perfect black color, deep matte blackest black, it was so beautiful! 8 years ago and I still remember to this day (and hope they didn’t notice as they were busy with smth)
I think this applies to monochromatic dressing generally. Not everyone looks good in black because of colour analysis, so I think that these rules can be applied to one of the darker tones suggested for each colour season/subseason.
Yes! I agree totally. Another problem is that even though black is supposedly one colour, there’s a lot of variation within “black.” And if the shades of black don’t work together, it can look a bit “off”-to me at least. But it’s not an issue with going monochrome with other dark colors colors like gray or navy. (Maybe it’s just that I can’t style “black”😊)
I am excited by color but my hands always reach for black. For me one of the most beautiful colors in clothing is faded black. Faded black denim , linen , leather etc. I will acquire certain articles of clothing anticipating their eventual softening and fading. Conversely I am reminded of my aunt who was a hair stylist her whole career, she would periodically re-dye her black clothes in the washer by dumping a few bottles of black Rit dye in.
I found the most beautiful structural black top on depop and the seller took down the post, a month later i’m still mourning that top we almost had an amazing relationship
Totally agree, my best all black look includes my vintage Junya for Comme hourglass/new look style blazer. the shape is so good it doesn't need colour!

Thanks for the fashion history at the beginning! I don't wear as much black as I used to but you can never go wrong with a full on black fit. I like to pair with a coloured bag or even shoes to create contrast and break the fit up a bit.

But I live in Berlin now and people assume I wear black for this generic Berlin coolness reasons 😢

Great analysis of the colour black Tuba. You have brought up a lot of ideas I hadn't considered before, especially regarding fabric choice when wearing black.

@@tubaavalon Skin undertone has a lot to do with what colours look good on you including black which can lean cool and therefore clash with warm skin tones. Blondes and strawberry blondes can be warm toned.

Wow, girl, your videos are amazing . One can learn so much from you. Thank you for creating such a work of art 🙏❤️ being blond, I always loved all black. It’s great contrast and mystery , but as you age, wearing all black, makes you look more tired🤪😂 it’s ok, like in summer outfits, there is some skin showing, and some tan and glowing skin, balances. But if covered from the neck to the feet in all black, it’s not so great anymore
To me, black is the hardest colour to wear because for it to be a good outfit, you really need good texture or shape, and to be honest, most fashion available to the public doesnt really have that 🤷♂🤷♀
I know your comment is old, but could you explain this in more detail. I've never thought about that with black, but I'm wondering though is how does this work? I know that would sum clothing brands. For instance, black colors usually tend to shrink a bit more and so maybe black clothes don't look as good because people aren't getting them in the right sizes.
So appreciate the historical references. Diito your irony/sardonic wit. Not always literal, which I think is clear… other times quite literal. I like that you have at times very emphatic opinions - while remaining entirely welcoming and open to others doing their own thing. As I type , the video is still playing, and you just stated: “You get to decide.”…. NB there isn’t any “black” in natural fibers (or any?) is there? Isn’t it all degrees of navy…, the super--darkest injection of indigo into wool resulting in what tailors at Loro Piana call “black.” Is that a crazy story I was told to steer me to costlier fabric? … I don’t think so.
I'm just trying my best man. I've been wearing all black for about 5 years consistently and love it. I get pieces I like fairly often, but I still wish I dressed better because I can't afford some of my favorite shit yet :/
Black is my uniform. I pay attention to the silhouette first and foremost. Then fabrication. Then shade of black. Matching black in various fabrications is extremely difficult lol
If you live somewhere very hot and sunny, black is actually not a good idea. Sun makes black clothes fade and look old very fast, and also it absorbs more of the sun rays heat, which makes it very hot
I feel quite aesthetically lazy when I wear all black, I feel like I need to step up the textures, proportions and silhouette to avoid looking like every other “avant guard by numbers” citizen out there. So for me it’s actually more labour intensive 😵💫🤣

Black is beautiful when the material is luxurious. The problem is with cheap fabrics where the black veers towards grey, purple, brown…dirty colours.
Brown and black can look so chic together though. Depends on the fabric/shade.
