Missing Photek samples: • "Say It" samples Laraaji - Immersion (ID'd by JamieRyanAinslie) • "Rings Around Saturn" samples the break from Greyboy Allstars - Miss Riverside (ID'd by 0e0) • And a special thanks to Selectabwoy 👊 for sharing his extensive knowledge in the making of this video. 0:18 I'm still in dark in regards to this vocal bit in "Drift to the Centre". And I'm most likely missing a few samples off the "Modus Operandi" LP as well.
All of this is almost 30 years old, made with less computing power than a Nokia 3210 and is musically significantly more advanced and engaging than almost all modern drum and bass. Photek is an absolute creative genius.
Rings Around Saturn is still to this day an unbelievable, beautiful, remarkably peaceful and forward thinking tune. Of course you could say that about most/all his 90s output but man Saturn is so incredible.
Rings around saturn will always be my no1 dnb tune... if i could describe it in one word, it would be precise... every single little split sample for the drums feels so meaningful as if it were thought out to create the bigger picture (the absolutely insane beat of this track). I think this is why the track reminds me of nature so much - the seeming randomness of the beat, tune and sound effects amalgamating into a beautiful, strange soundscape parallels well with the infinite random small details of nature, which combine to create such pretty landscapes or planets or galaxies. 10/10 masterclass of a piece of music, I cannot express my love for this tune enough
Photek is the absolute master especially his drum patterns chopping and programming. Got more of his tunes on vinyl than any other dj or producer. Rupert is definitely my favourite producer when it comes to jungle, dnb. And of course Source Direct!! They are just incredible.
I'm very impressed with his sampling skills, and not only that, he turned them into very intricate pieces of timeless music, I don't see such ingenuity and skill in most of today's DNB
One of the best episodes of the series yet, big up! Photek is the god of sampling tbh, the meticulous work that went into his tunes remains one of the highest benchmarks of our music!
I have officially lost my mind! Having owned almost every release here, this is amazing to hear and learn of so many original samples! Thank you really!!!
This is a superb video thankyou for all the effort! Photek along with Source Direct are my absolute all time favourite producers, but Photek in particular had a way of processing his drums and patterns that was so unique.
Great video, his sampling of old funk breaks and alternative movies is well known, but I also love the way he sampled and thus also listened to a lot of contemporary techno and house music.
Yes, he definitely had the best ears, by the way, Goldie's Photek remix from still life would be very interesting, so I'm overwhelmed, thank you very much :)
Even though the Buddy Rich track sounds really similar, I think the drums (or at least part of them) in KJZ were actually sampled from Paul Humphrey, Shelley Manne, and Willie Bobo's "4 Aces." ua-cam.com/video/i9DQSgFu4ws/v-deo.html The resemblance can be heard most at the beginning of KJZ, with 0:11 sampling 0:55 from the 4 aces track, 0:15 sampling the drums at 3:40, and 0:18 sampling the drums from 3:49.
I didn't realise until today that he made two songs called Say It. I only knew the later one that was supposed to be the other side of One Nation but didn't come out.
It's crazy to realize how much overlap there was in the world of music production & sampling in the 90's: several things Photek sampled also were sampled by FSOL. Coincidence?
Not sure about the building or who else might have had space, but Paradox’s studio was next door to FSOL’s back in the 90s, I would have loved to be the guy making tea for everyone :)
@@OriginalJungleSamples I can start of with the producer Kjell. A lot of the finds are on whosampled, but I have some more finds that are still pending. There's still a lot of samples yet to be discovered so if you're a hunter too, I could let you find the rest ;)
Anyone know where the Dillinja sample came from then? If you listen to the sped up version at 4:00 and compare it to ua-cam.com/video/w_UceUF4YFU/v-deo.html it sound incredibly close, just different processing. As if he took the first second, then repeated it down a note before letting it run out.
@@darkerarts tbh mate I completely forgot about the extra vocal bits on the Dillinja remix, and Ive got the 12 lol. Getting old :) Yeh I see the similarity but think it's a coincidence. The answer is usually simpler. On 'you dont know' the first part sounds like a slightly clipped 'No-oh-oh' ... it's likely the same track where he got the spoken 'each time... ???' and the 'you don't know' vocal. I've not seen it IDed on any of the usual resources. I had a look myself, but it's a difficult one to google due to the common words. Someone will happen upon it one day, I'm sure.
That Aquarius 12" has no reason not to be worth a thousand pounds in the grand scheme of things In fact all this music is so undervalued. It's not even funny

Excellent vid and yes, Will knows his stuff =)
I remember watching Jaws 3 once and spotted a sample in Into the 90s. It’s where a man is trapped in some sort of chamber and is shouting for help.
Age of empires - samples from The Horn Track by Egyptian Empire
Found in this Ruperts track ua-cam.com/video/LbQg4k85414/v-deo.html - pitched voice sample from Loleatta Holloway - Love Sensation

Was lucky enough to witness Rupert DJ as a special guest for a black market records night @ The End…a once in a lifetime experience

This guys good at spotting em :))
from whitney to leary.. mindblowing.
The GOAT
Realizing a lot of these samples are from the Future Sound of London (FSoL) as well. Especially the movies.
Best producer in the business 👏👏
This channel is insane. Love it!
The greatest of all time - the Don !
Finally I know where the vocal for consciousness comes from! After all this time
Wow, that just blew my mind and sent chills all through me knowing I have most of these records and now finding out where the samples are from.
Thank you
Jungle is life . 😍😍😍
Thats a T-Shirt there
Rings Around Saturn also samples the break from Greyboy Allstars "Miss Riverside"
GOD DAMN that scanners sample is fire.

ah, so ant miles sampled "wave forms" on his track "the essence" then. i always assumed he made that noise himself
Any chance of a Dom& Roland episode? He has great movie/TV samples ranging from Léon, Star Trek Voyager, Gladiator, Blade Runner to Twin Peaks etc.

Dan Curtain. Techno
Could you do the samples of The Q Project and Danny Breaks?
Can anyone tell me where the sung vocal in DJ Crystal: Meditation is from please? Not the Dark Crystal movie sample...the long female sung note.
Hmm so he's the Liam Howlett of Jungle/DnB
