Photek music always sounds fresh no matter how old it is.
Those things doesnt get old, they are ageing well !
@@pixel2327 maturing like a fine wine
Produce music that's ahead of it's time, timeless as Goldie said.. progressive drum and bass.
0:34 Black Dog - Bytes as a desert island disc, DOPE pick!! My absolute favourite electronic music record.
So he’s really human after all! All hail this absolute legend of the 90s. What a gift to electronic music.
‘Make the drums the music’ wise words. Everything flows from rhythms even if they’re not obvious. Even ambient has its own rhythm.
Love that one of his desert island discs is Bytes by Black Dog Productions. That remains one of my all time favourite albums, some tracks on it still sound like the future.
Got it on the repress as I type this and it still sounds utterly mysterious.
It’s a great album, I’ve still got my original bronze coloured vinyl.
It’s mad how much his voice has changed since that video with source direct
So much maturity and inner peace.
Transatlantic teef
@@JamieRyanAinslie hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
@@JamieRyanAinslie lol nailed it. Dying.
I was also fortunate enough to meet him in bar rumba around 1997 and talked to him for about 10 minutes. Great personality
Always wondered what that mad genius looked like
Really!???
He was all over the music press in the 90's, and in all the Metalheadz booklets etc
He looks a bit like nicholas cage
That samurai tune he made was one of my favourites with all the sword strike noises.
Taiko drum bassline
Ni Ten Ichi Ryu - the best
Great selection of questions from whoever picked them
Wow, what a find! Photek is nothing short of a legend, a musical genius. Doesn't surprise me that this has so few views. Those who know, know :)
This man is responsible for my music journey more than anyone else - a true master of the craft.
neat. it was aphex twin and roni size for me. Photek was just an amazing find between
What a maestro. His d&b is still the least dated and most original. Took d&b as far as he could then moved on - the mark of any great artist. Wish he would give us another album though 🙏
We have Naibu and many others making timeless DnB. We have enough room for all, DnB still focuses on established artists and new ones are just trying to copy them to garner same attention.
That Basement Flat in Ipswich should be preserved as a place of historic importance.
Thank you, Rupert! Your music is still way ahead of our time!
Cool! Bought his early work when I just started DJing in '93/94. Jazzy & funky.
In the day he was the best of them all
One of the greatest artists ever!
A living legend
haha lol. calm down. he was great in the 90's then went to shit
@@MemoryLaneCinema wrong. Check out his Bolier room set from 2011, the sickest dubstep ever made , on the fly, live
Absolute Legend. I live in Ipswich Massachusetts haha. Weird. Anyway, one of my first vinyl was "the hidden camera". You, Goldie, Aphrodite and Dillinja. Keep rockin brotha
It isn’t without a sense of irony, that many of my favourite artists in the current time, are more influenced by Photek’s music than ever before. Friske, Forest Drive West, Overlook, Loxy, Mute, The Untouchables would not be making the same music today if Rupert had never produced under System X/Aquarius at all. I would love to hear his thoughts on listening to the last few years of Samurai’s/Rupture’s/Repertoire’s back catalogues. Some of it is still produced & sounds so authentic to the 90’s, that it’s hard to even say if the music has progressed, or as to whether the real fans of the music didn’t feel the early styles of the genre had enough time & so we’re making up for the short lived 93-95 time period. Either way, I’m happy that the use of funk breaks are finally back into use after losing their fashion since Alex Reese’s Pulp Fiction; possibly the most important/controversial track of all time, due to its unique at the time usage of using individual hits for drums, rather than edits. That track went onto influencing the genre in such a huge way, that it took us until 2014 to really get bored of that classic kick, snare kick-snare beat that was used in over 50% of the tracks for 20 years or so.
Photek, source direct, hidden agenda, dj fokus, equinox etc really got me into jungle long ago. Big respect ✊
His concept of how limitations expands creativity is spot on. Thank you for sharing Photek
He's playing a dnb set in San Fransisco in May. I get to go. Absolutely hyped.
Sounds amazing! Wish I could go
@@donnykaraoke1 he canceled 😞
@@AQT187 oh 😔 that's lame
I worked for vinyl distribution so I have anything and everything by photek and source direct, I just love there shit. So different and soundtrack like. Photek tunes are like a journey...
Lucky for you
Love this mans music. What a legend.
Legendary producer, thank you ❤️
this was one of the most inspirational videos i ever watched, blew my mind when he suggested to make the drums first. i use that technique now and it's made my life os much easier. also what he said about the absence of limitations, never even thought of that before. the man's a genius
His best Album was untypical, but great: Solaris. The first five tracks in a row are still kicking asses and blow my mind. So timeless stuff.
I don't really like jungle, drum and bass but Photek got my attention.
One of the best producers in any genre!
"Yeah I chop up a break sometimes... put it on the back-burner." Rupert!!
Absolute Pioneer of the scene, Rupert stepped outside the norm and created dnb that was beyond the boundaries. Big up. I’m glad he mentioned Dillinja, because he also had “ a sound “ that was outside what others were doing, and as a drummer myself, these two guys tapped into the vibe, hard
The ultimate king of breakbeats in terms of production.
The word legend is overused these days. Not here. The word fits the bill perfectly.
His comments on the reduced limits in todays world of music creation are so so damn true! Sometimes it's a good idea to impose limits on yourself, so you can focus on what's in front of you and not be distracted by looking for more.
I have to show my respect ✊ Photek was a pioneer jungle-ist!! He made some serious Amen bass-line bangers!!
Damn right 👍🏾
Great interview with one of the scenes masters
Photek is one of the bests man. If u dont know and if u wanna know, open your mind to a country you don't know exists.
Pure talent ... though he was inspired heavily by other top artists, he managed to shape his own sound... definitely more smooth and soft and mellow. LOVE Photek!
talented producer !
25 years ! Damn...🥳 T he answer about the creativity and originality in the current times is so ... good honest and on time :) anyways, I still expect more from Photek !! Back than his sound was for me mega original and still is! One love!
He presumably has spent some of is well deserved money on his teeth.. Well done.
The absolute don.
Legend!
Rain, thunder, helicopters..man after my own heart.👊
Photek made and ruled the 90's sound but now onto new things TV Shows in America.
Brilliant
STAR..SO FAR IN FRONT IN THE 90'S DRUM & BASS SCENE..MODUS OPERANDI..MASTERPIECE

This guy is good.. This guy is REALLY good.
Godfather of Jungle !
GOAT
Never say never but he’s on a new path now
So weird to see the person behind the breaks. What a great interview.
Photek project is like a mix of two sound vectors of godlike producers in dnb - Goldie and Dillinja.
He's just a legend...that's all!
Photek.... You are as big as dnb, because in 98 you already did game tunes related to dnb, amazing
fucking legend
Its true what he said at the end, everyone has access to limitless sounds, you can just press a button and get a really professional sounding drum loop, back in the day they had to create everything from scratch. I'm finding music these days is just boring, there's too much out there
PHOTEk 🙏🏽
I heard some stuff from one of his shows and there's litters of samples used in d+b. One action bit played some full blown Ed rush tune
What!?
@@tobietera serious 😂 me + a mate saw photek on the score, watched some random episode. Could've believe how much was there, def make out the samples. Ed rush tune couldn't say for certain, guessing tbf but was techstep from around that era
@@chornby789 - Oooo I get it now lol. You mean he made some of the music for a programme called The Score, and you noticed a load of d&b samples! Okay I've got it now lol 😂
I actually really want to hear some if his TV and film work, I need to look some up. It sounds even better how you've described it haha 😁
Yea pretty much, I'm not sure the exact name of the show. But there's definite influence in his new work if you've a keen ear 😉

Still got the junglist emu installed.
2:29 - Photek's got a stalker
I can’t help noticing his radioactive teeth 🦷
Legend. Nice new American teeth too. 😁
3:02 Tune id anyone? I know it's Horns 4 94 but did Photek remix it too?
It's Photek - Age Of Empires.
The original was actually Tim Taylor - The Horn Track.
Back 2 Basics just used the same sample and called it Horns 4 '94. 👍🏻

Doesn't get better than Bytes, seriously amazing album. Always fresh.
Sad part of all this.....he don't make "dance" music anymore

U forgetting dillinja
lol that is an utterly ridiculous thing to say. Disgusting almost.
You’re chatting utter shit mate haha
Photek mentions Black Dog in this very interview guy, doesn't get better than them. Thousands of other artists to mention.
I dunno, dude. I think he needs to get out of this crap from TV and make an album!
