Photek what a legend!! He's now producing music for HBO, Netflix and Hollywood. Such an accomplished producer. Respect!!!! Black Market Records was a community hub. It's deeply missed!!!

@@dansurlis4031 My favourite track of all time was on Basement, & that’s after me studying the genre, buying thousands of records & producing the music over a 25 year period. That track, is none other than Source Direct under their X-Files alias with ‘Forbidden Medicine.’ It’s sadly never going to get repressed, after speaking to Phil personally, who has told me very confidently that he has retired, & Basement is finished.
Photek- Legend! Remember when I used to work in a record shop in Sweden, and BMG launched is first album in 96. MY GOD! It was like a new world opened! Photek, big up!!!!
Shopping for vinyl in the early 90's was my life back then. Used to bunk off school with any cash I hustled and would spend the day on my own flicking through old stuff in reckless records. Great days.
Big up!! Love those venues. Labrynth was my local. Big up all the school ravers. Good times at Roller Express, The Rocket, The Wax Club, and, Raw Club.
I was so sad when BMS shut down. It was such a massive part of my life, such a shame. But big up to Blackmarket, thanks for the memories, and the records! 🙌🏻
I like it when my musical heroes are down to earth "normal" people, where as in the world of creative reality, this lovely man is a musical genius. ..... And I do not use that word "genius" lightly.
Used to buy all my stuff from Record Basement in Reading (home of Vinyl Distribution), remember DJ Lee behind the counter always hooking me up with white labels, and being stood at the counter when Rupert came in, probably for a meeting with the Distro side...
I used to buy records by mail from Basement in Reading. Every week I'd get half a dozen twelves from DJ Lee. Quick phone call every week to get the skinny on the new tunes and put in the order. They used to send me all the good shit, Photek/Source Direct/Metalheadz/GLR/Cert18/Basement/Street Beats and so forth, promos and new stuff. Still kept my D+B collection. Never get rid of em either. Great days.
I hear you. I'll never part from my vinyl collection no matter how much the Mrs nags that it's taking too much space at home. We lived a golden era!! Big up!!
Do you remember a venue called Gatzbys in Reading? Station Approach? I used to go to Hardcore raves in the early 90s there. It was a night called Menace. Then many moons later I had few mates that used to play out The Matrix, on London Street.
Aye, them 'Studio Pressure' Tracks ❤ most, but yrs & yrs later that rmx of 'Ready She Ready' ("BASS'EY RIGHT NOW") is bl**dy brilliant. Geezer's done so many Classics (& gems) + hard to recall when off Face tbh
I was going to say, isn't this Blackmarket Records in d'arblay street run by Ray Keith and Nicky Blackmarket. Top floor business. I have one of their records.
im not sure who said it, but im almost certain its was Photek, but I grew up listening to jungle and im a house producer. sometimes I think I make house choons inspired by jungle. idk weird.
Buying records (in my case tapes) sound unheard, then finding out what they were later? Been there done that a thousand times, and guess what? Nearly all of them were ok to excellent, hardly ever a bad apple. Virgin Megastore, 2 Stockton, San Francisco, 1994-97, I was a bike messenger, top days.
It’s true about record shops, one I went to they took the records out the sleeves and out them on a rack behind the counter so they could play and decide what you bought. Completely off-putting and annoying when you’d see DJs come in and be given a pile of the best tunes. Used to try and go early and you’d get better tunes and could ask questions. On topic photek is one of my favourite producers hes up there with anyone who made jungle and drum and bass.

Absolute Legend, guys like Photek, DJ Shadow, Calibre, Burial come along and just completely take the sound to a new level.

Lemon D ❤
The tunes he did on street beats are some of the deepest intense jungle you can hear. Real tunes for the heads
yea man
And basement later on... the reading guys put out some amazing tunes

A Special Force in this Music.
I used to love walking into a record shop flicking through vinyl, miss those days.
Photek as the special guest for black market records @ The End was one of the greatest DJ sets of my life, thank you Rupert👏
He never knew back then, that he would go on to become the greatest DNB producer ever.
The sound of jungle comes from this mind….love him
This man created the blue print for Jungle/drum and bass.. His music is absolutely brilliant.. Holds up so well today.. Big thank you Rupert 😊
His technique is razor sharp.
Seeing blackmarket again depresses me. Used to love going in there. Wont get a record shop like that again. Rip

I remember seeing Roni Size in BM in about 1996. Only person I was taller than lol!
What a fucking don! Made the most innovative, forward-thinking tunes in D&B. Only person who comes close these days is Ibunshi.
lambd01d thanks for the tip.
.. And in general the stuff from pinecone moonshine!
jørgen hvad agreed. pcms absolutely brilliant brilliant label.
@@jrgenhvad9834 I just happened upon your comment regarding Pinecone Moonshine. Amazing stuff!
Cheers. Ibunshi is fucking great
Never forget where you came from 🙂 and the artwork that supported your beats✌️
He literally perfected a genre of music 20 yrs ago.
Certainly was one of a handful of producers that brought credibility to the genre

i know two large record shops local to me which i found accidently being lost looking for directions.
Guess you can say you had to get lost before you found yourself
Going record shopping with Photek? Damn... lucky girl

"Let's go with upside down."

I don't buy DnB music anymore unless i can get it on vinyl. I LOVED thumbing through stacks of records, now it's all MP3's...... YAWN...
Age of empires... take a bow photek.
