Hey guy's I love the video and this is the first time I can't agree with you on the Denon s960h!!! I myself own this receiver and I think its great... although I don't have ps5 yet because I'm not a hard-core gamer I love watching movies this receiver does its Job. Denon does have the 2.1 hdmi box fix but for an mid teir entry level this receiver more than does its job.. not all of us can afford a $3,000 receiver. I think onkyo is dead in the water.. but I still love you guys and please don't take this the wrong way. I just wanted to make it clear for those of us who can't afford a crazy receiver but still want fantastic atmos experience get the denon over the onkyo.. P.S. even turned up passed 80 on the volume my denon s960h doesn't get hot.. I've tested this myself 😁

@@movie_av_impulse We all but acknowledge that not everyone has $3000 for a receiver in the video. As long as you are happy with your Denon, that's all that matters. But I disagree that Onkyo is "dead in the water".

Absolutely agree with the issue with Samsung. Heck, I sold my old TV because of that, bought a Sony TV and never looked back. In the meantime, I switched to NAD, but hat down to Onkyo, it worked flawlessly as long as it was our companion for movies, not so great with stereo music. Still would recommend Onkyo to whomever asks.

@@KristiWright first off my wife and I love your final thoughts/bonus content!!! 😁 but for me I've owned 2 onkyo receiver's back when 6.1 was a big deal for me they have always lacked in 2 departments... 1 being 2 channel (music listening) and low tone sounds like a pin dropped in the back channels.. I just feel onyko doesn't deliver on all ends but that's me! 🤷🏽‍♂️ and don't get me wrong I would love to have a receiver at $3,000 who wouldn't but my wife and kids come first.. believe me my fingers are crossed I win some tower speakers on this giveaway 😆. No matter how I feel about a review. you guys channel is my favorite among all of the reviewers out there I always posted your latest video on my Instagram.. already can't wait for the next surprise 🤗

Don't ignore that Onkyo has been the absolute rock bottom entry into AVRs for at least 10-15 years now. I am willing to bet they have sold more units than most of the major brands. If they are competing with the audio of Yamaha I would say that they have stepped it up.

This is my first foray into home theater, and I purchased the Onkyo 5100 as a result of Andrew's review. We had to manage our budget, and so ended up spending a lot more of it on speakers than we intended, but this receiver has worked smoothly for us after getting set up. It's absolutely convenient and been a wonderful improvement in our home theater experience paired with the Polk Reserve R200 and the smaller Polk center with the Atmos speakers. Thank you, Andrew and Kristi, for helping us use our budget well. Sincerely, the dedication you both have to making sure that even budget-conscious home theater buyers have a good experience is greatly appreciated.

Love this! My first "system" was a Onkyo amp with 2 bookshelf speakers that I got from my uncle in the 90s when I was in middleschool. Used to listen to tapes until they stretched and warped on that thing. I saved up for a used Technics system with 2 tallboys AND A MULTI-CD PLAYER in highschool and then got a job in college to buy a Focal 5.1ch system later. Was an audio snob for years until I finally realized that I had fallen for the marketing and not the music.

    • @LuxAudio389
      @LuxAudio389 3 роки тому +1

Right on! Onkyo was fantastic stuff back in the day. I had an Integra P304 with a seperates, and their stuff plus Adcom were so well made. The Onkyo carousel cd players were also nice in that you could swap out CDs while one was playing. Lol I don't think you fell for the marketing. Back then Onkyo, JM Lab/Focal and etc was well made and great sounding boutique Hifi. Arguably the Marantz of the 70's but In the 90's. So when 5.1 started, the Recievers were over built because the manufacturers didn't know that the effect channels weren't going to be as demanding as the front 3 channels. Dennon had also built tanks that were RMS rated at their specs. Sony, Pioneer and etc were also good, but nothing like Onkyo or Dennon. Nakamichi was also a legendary brand. These were like the Godzillas of the Japanese car market (Supra, Celica, VR4, and RX-7) 🍻

I still have my TX-SR 706 Onkyo receiver which I bought in 2009. It has given me 12 years of reliable service and still going strong. Sure, it doesn't have bluetooth and some of the latest features, but it can decode Dts Hd master audio and Dolby true HD. I know Dolby Atmos is now standard on most receivers, but it's not bad for such an old receiver.

Andrew & Kristi, I always enjoyed the Onkyo sound, and my very first 2 channel system was an entry level Onkyo receiver and tape deck back in 1982. I had a few others including an Integra TX-890 that was a beast. What I would like to see Onkyo do is real, high quality 2 channel components like they used to do, along with the home theater gear. I guess that's where the money is, but there are still a few of us that keep separate systems for things. Great review. Keep it up.

Huge Denon/Marantz fan here, been using them for nearly a decade. Recently I watched a movie at my friends with a 2016 onkyo(forgot the model, 7 channel 100w/2 ch driven) i immediately noticed how active the surrounds are vs my denon/Marantz (x4500h currently). The sound also had a snap/presence/liveliness to them(budget fluance SX). Sure it lacks individual eq for subs but the overall presentation was really impressive.

    Very informative review and discussion.
I have been waiting to upgrade my 10 yo Integra prepro, which has become the bottle neck to the system because it can only pass through 2k. It’s performed flawlessly, a testament to the built quality that was the norm back then.
The audio section and ease of use was why I got it then.
I am very excited to hear that there is potential for a RZ-50 review, especially because of it incorporates Dirac Live. Unless they are coming out with a prepro, the RZ may be the center of my household entertainment.
I want to support Onkyo and Yamaha to keep the Borg (Sound United) in check and competition is good for consumers.
Good way to start Sunday morning.

Most users won't wander too far into the outer fringes when playing movies or music so its good to knows the limitations of performance and/or building materials. I suspect if you'd have a condo you are less likely to venture into 100 dB territory vs your own stand alone house.

I love a good budget receiver, and the 5100 is a GOOD budget receiver! Especially after room EQ, it really does sound comparable to costlier receivers when watching movies. When listening to music you can detect the differences in SQ, but watching movies, it's possible to get really great sound for less!

I've never bought a receiver for myself, but for my dad's 50th birthday some time ago, my mom and I chose to build a new home theater. We went with a brand new mid-range Onkyo and a full array of Polk speakers to replace an undersized pair of Klipsch bookshelf speakers and some tired components that will remain anonymous. The new Onkyo replaced an old Onkyo (pre .1 sub-out era) and ever since I've been dreaming of an Onkyo of my own. Only more recently has my living space and budget lined up to support that, and hearing that they have returned is VERY exciting.

I got this one upgrading from the SONY STRDH590. Love it! I’m not a power user like you, but for my living room’s 5.2.2 theater system with Sony Core speakers it works amazing. I connect my PS5 to my LG C9 OLED for gaming with no issues, and use the second output for my Epson LS300. I also really like that my LG recognizes the inputs within the input. So my “HDMI 2” shows up as “AV Receiver”, but there’s also extra options if you enable HDMI CEC and you’ll see your other components like “PS5” or “Shield TV Pro”.

I bought the Onkyo 696 in January when my old receiver died. I liked it for the first few hours I had it, very intuitive. Then I did a firmware update and that was all she wrote. I had the receiver hard wired straight into my router, and I have fiber. Gave me a connection error and made a brick of the unit as I could not get out of the loop. Turns out this was a known issue. Took it back to the store and got the Yamaha V6A and am so glad I did. I use this receiver just for my vinyl setup and some old ML motion 10’a and this thing never breaks a sweat. Plus I have done firmware updates without an issue with it nor my Marantz Sr5015. Never again will I get an Onkyo.

Glad to see Onkyo is back. I’ve had a TX NR818 for a few years now and found it a big upgrade from the previous two Denons. Using it with a 65” D series Vizio, which as I’ve never been a gamer and mostly just stream TV and Netflix, Prime, Apple5V+ is quite sufficient for my needs and mid sized room. The only issue I have with the Onkyo is occasional audio dropouts on the HDMI ARC connection, but the system is so much more convenient to use with the remote supplied by cable provider ( Shaw BlueCurve) that I’ve been putting up with it until an attractive replacement candidate come along.
If it turns out that the HDMI board issue is resolved I’d be looking for something with line level outputs, as one of my residual audiophile nervosa traits is the use of outboard amps for at least the main front row three as well as multiple subs. So maybe the new RZ series can offer something in that regard.
Anyways, thanks again to both for the honest review, and belated happy birthday.

She totally nailed it! I love everything she said about this Onkyo. I agree that for 600 bucks there is no way it should have push terminals and plastic front panel and so so two channel performance. Those three features or quality's are normally reserved for receivers costing between 200 to 400 dollar range from most brands. I own 11 receivers from 300 to over 1000 and 2 are Onkyo. My nr509 from 2011-12 is more like a 500 dollar model than this new nr5100 and the nr509 was to be their big price per performance ticket in 2011-12 for 400 and it was great all around performance. Yes the 509 had their issues. In my knowledgeable opinionthe nr5100 is overpriced by two hundred bucks and is no more than a four hundred dollar receiver period.

I still use it as a transport in a smaller less used system, but its value for money has been outstanding. When the laser finally goes on it I will be gutted. I also have an Onkyo TX-8220 receiver as part of a 2.1 AV set up which, while it will win no awards, was very affordable and just works. It is interesting but I never found the 8220 to be all that forward. I have paired it with my Heresy IVs and they sounded quite good together. I wonder if they voice the multi-channel AV receivers differently than the 2-channel....
