I was actually naïve enough to think I had seen all the trully great beat making content on Your UA-cam, then I am introduced to this channel.😮 Hats off, banging work!
Amazing, hearing some of your outcomes when looking away from the screen or doze off, it's just like listening to actual samples haha! Thanks so much for sharing this Barry!
I have my problems with supporting native as I did early on but found missing support and dropped instruments ever too often, but I assume you sold me to their products again. That flute also sounded incredible. For most of the time that's where my stuff lacked original sounding instruments. You prove its possible, which leaves me once again amazed. Keep up this fantastic work. Will now enjoy your old MCM 12 inch to praise the master
Ahhh thanks man. I gotta say I don't think there is much new essential stuff in NI Komplete 12. I think they could give better deals for upgrading if there is something new you want. I just felt when I got Komplete 11 it would sort me out with loads of stuff in one foul swoop. I also got it when half price which helped greatly. Thing is you need the full kontakt to play most sample libraries so they kind of have you over a barrel lol. Enjoy the MCM lol
Just walkin' by to tell you that you're my favourite person on the interwebs. The information you provide is priceless. That sample pack of yours on the other hand is most affordable. I usually sample all my stuff from vinyl. But your sample pack is the first one I ever purchased. Cheers Mate!
Thank you for that informative and entertaining edition of fake breaks. To say it was Inspiring would be an understatement. It was the sonic tonic . The Awesomnousity of the harpsichord avec d'cheeky delay sounding like a mellotron had to be my favourite segment. 'so thats how he does it" Thanks Barry.
I bought the NI Rickenbacker after re-watching this, i wasn't convinced a few months back when i was considering which bass to buy, i got the Pre-bass coz i thought it sounded warmer in the demos. But that Ricker is something else now i have it. Palm mutes, bit of amp, slapback and Little Radiator to add the H E A T. Cheers for the recommendations x
I like how get all those instruments and drums to sound like they where recorded in the 60's, nice choice of instruments too. Try making some beats that include a Mellotron, I bet you'ed make something dope. Peace Barry and God bless!
This tune really does hit that vintage library sound! A new album with the same kind of sound is The Sorcerer's "In Search Of The Lost City Of The Monkey God". That's all real instruments, and the similarities in sound with this VST-only track are striking.
You are truly an inspiration! Inspired by your techniques today I created my first good sounding library-funk track, which i’m planning for a long time now, but it never sounded the way I wanted it to. Thanks!
Thats fantastic man. Once you get it to a place your really happy with it, Post up a link here in the comments for everyone to check. Would be great for everyone to be inspiring everyone else.
Excellent demonstration! this is exactly what I'm doing with the Backline Rig in Reason, I also love using Mellow from Ujam for acoustic bass lines. I have the Komplete collection but have no space on my hard drive for it at the moment. I def gotta invest in that passion flute plugin, the sounds are amazing!
@@Sispex yea, I was checking out the flute along with a few other instruments right after viewing this video. Really impressive! I think you might enjoy the Ujam plugins and work wonders with them. 😉
Ample Guitar Gibson (AGG) is still available from www.amplesound.net it is now called Ample Guita LP : www.amplesound.net/en/pro-pd.asp?id=1 You should upgrade to version 3 , it is free.
Ahhh that makes sense. I will def get on the upgrade. Thanks for the heads up. I couldn't see the jazz Hollow body guitar on there either. I have that one too and its ace.
Si Spex - so much so that I’m probably gonna buy Addictive Drums 2! What packs would you recommend? Glad I found you mate honestly been massively refreshing watching your content 👍🏻 (edit) must have missed the recommendation lists 1st time round! the bass is a little too full and the velocity of each hit is too similar but thats really the only thing that would give it away for me. really appreciate someone going deep into this and you did great, goodlookin out!
Thanks Jeff! I think you're spot on. Its really hard to turn your back on all the mixing tropes that you have picked up after 30 years of trying to mix Hip-Hop. And yeah, although i love addictive drums I do wish there were a few more layers of velocity. Glad you liked though man.
@@Sispex haha I dont have 30 years but I know exactly what you mean, I have a hard time not having my snare be loud as shit even though I know I'm working on an r&b song. but yeah I liked it a lot, if you have any ideas for more stuff like this please do the videos! appreciate ya
What I like to do is create this sort of fake vintage material- drum breaks, horn stabs, flutes and strings over Rhodes, etc., and then record them off to cassette tape. Then I’ll sample them off of tape into an old, low quality sampler and chop them as if they had come off of real vintage records.
Yea man, Plugins are great but you cant beat some actual analogue tape. Plus its nice to then be able to chop stuff like it is a sample off a record rather than copying chunks of midi
Ha HA, eagle eyed John. Yea man moved house a year or so back so this is my new little room which is so much nicer than the space I had in the old flat. I do have eyes on the garden though and really want to build myself a garden studio!!!
Barry, your tutorial on how to make your own old school breaks was invaluable. It forced me to upgrade from Ableton 8 to 9.5. Do you have any major label credits to your name? Your tracks are dope.
Thanks man! I would actually say if you can try and get ableton 10 as the drum buss midi effect is really useful. I used to be in a production unit called the Creators and we worked with some pretty big artists, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Dilated Peoples, etc. Also did a remix for Dilated on the flip of the worst comes to worst single. Oh and our first ever release was the European remix to aint hard to tell by Nas. It got featured on the last illmatic anniversary release. Its called the laidback remix. All this stuff can be found on youtube.
Damn I pulled the Creators record off my shelf just other day! Some great beats on that one! Great videos too. I’ll need to check if I have that rickenbacker bass, I only have the standard Komplete, can’t remember if it’s included.
@@rorymackenzie5230 Hey Rory, No i'm afraid the rickenbacker only comes in the ultimate package. The main advantage to upgrading to the ultimate is the Ricky bass and the vintage, 50s, and 70s abbey road drums. Thing is by the time you buy them separately you might as well pay for the ultimate upgrade. You just gotta wait till its on a sale.
"emulated breaks" or "break emulations" "virtual breaks" "programmed breaks" anything to get away from using the word fake lol. also, if you program a drum break and you processed it such that it sounds like one that was sampled from a song all you've done is taken a break and made it sound vintage so yeah, they're real breaks. just my 2 cents though of course. very interested in this topic. one technique I use is to program at BPM ranges that old school funk breaks were recorded in and then pitch those up into drum and bass range and downtempo trip-hop range to make sure it's sounding good. thought process behind it is: "if it's true for the amen break and the think break etc...then it should be for whatever I'm creating"
Ha yea Fake Breaks is pretty wack lol. I quite like virtual breaks. Pitching drums up and down is a good idea for sure but do remember that most people started sampling the Amen brother drums from the ultimate breaks and beats album which had slowed them down to 33rpm so when people sped them up to 130ish they actually weren't that far off pitch wise from where they started lol!
@@Sispex don't know why youtube never notified me of your reply but that's definitely a crucial bit of information I would've never have been privy to on my own so thanks for that. that definitely had something to do with the frequency response then but what I'm looking for (and admittedly should've specified in my earlier comment) is to I guess approximate the relationship between the pitches of the individual sounds. Like kick to hi hat and kick to snare, etc. It's subjective obviously but I think there's definitely something to it.
KICKDRUM from what I gather they are good plug ins for sure but I must confess I’m not a fan of the monthly subscription model. If you can no longer afford to keep up the subscription down the line then all your mixes will be lost unless of course you bounce all the tracks which is something I would recommend for mixing.
