For a more dynamic health bar I use a sprite for the outline and a clone for the health portion itself, that changes it's x position based on whatever variable it's monitoring, as well as changing color.
Pros: Looks better, don't need to make a lot of costumes.
Cons: The bar must be on the edge of the screen so you don't see the health clipping out one side.

    • @griffpatch

hey griffpatch, i found out about a thing that might be of interest of you for future self projects, or maybe future advanced tutorials!! in regular game developments, games have a SET framerate inside the game loop. in scratch it is pretty simple to do this using the "timer" variable, me and my coding instructor used this in my remake of the classic game "snake" !! But knowing this, you can now make EXCELENT use of the "turbo mode", because since you can set a frame rate in one sprite, and not set it in another, you can have sprites running code at break neck, lightning quick speeds, which is EXTREMELY useful in RAYCASTING. I should know, me and my instructor have tested this idea!! if you would like i can show you exactly how we have done this, and you are MOST DEFINITELY allowed to use my code in future tutorials if you so wish!! us coders must share knowledge after all.

But now I’m making a sequel of that game and I’ve a little problem, cause there are multiple “tiles” in my game, and you can move from tile to tile by touching an invisible wall at the side on the screen (this is a new feature), and there are the same type of enemies on different tiles, these are clones. But the problem is that when some clone are hidden, but other clones are shown (like on tile X1Y2, enemies 1, 2 and 3 are shown, but enemy 4, 5 and 6 are hidden) the Healthbars of clone 4, 5, and 6 are also shown. A easier way to make it, is for example, if your boss has 40 health, turn it into 4, and your character does 0.2-0.4 damage every hit. Make the healthbar, give it 4 sprites, and make it so "If HP > 3 then set costume to hp full", the gaps between the numbers will keep the costume until you reach a lower number. Keep in mind it's If HP higher, not lower. Lower will cause it to switch sprites every second.

I also made a variant, the boss health bar. It's bigger, stays at X 0 but Y is varied but at usually -150, it's border is black, the pool colour is normally red which can be changed by colour graphic effect and also fifty-one costumes.

I have an idea for "how to make a great platformer". It's to add boss battles, because you just created a health bar tutorial.

This is a nice turtorial but i recommend doing the health bar with pen mechanic instead of just making costumes on your own but this is a good turtorial for beginners

hey, Griffpatch I was wondering if you could please teach us how to make a boss and how to get the enemy to look different for example if I wanted a green enemy to be fast then how could I code that? Oh yeah also maybe like a med-pack to heal and a working shop, please? In classic platformer tutorials Please?
