I've been training up here in Pai for the past couple months, and if I might add a personal number 11: Sleep. A lot. Get a full night's sleep before training in the morning. Take naps between morning and afternoon sessions. Take your recovery as seriously as you take your training. Almost all of my bad training days came from under-recovery.
🇹🇭 Wellcome to Thailand 🇹🇭 Thank you for supporting Thailand Thank you for supporting Muaythai I hope everyone safe during Covid19 Thank you all Muaythai guys around the world for supporting Thailand.
I went to thailand to train last year and i swear to god it was the closest to heat stroke ive ever been, old school gym open to the elements with very little airflow, my training partner and I legit almost died.
I remember I messaged you on Facebook in 2014 asking for tips on my trip to thailand you was very helpful though my first day I drunk to much water while doing pads and I had to puked it back up Haha the thais had a laugh heheheh

Great video lads. I live in the region so in a non Covid world am lucky enough to be able to get there pretty easy. So the biggest mistake about training in Thailand is not going to Thailand to make your own mistakes. Something else that was triggered by your point about hydration is that even if you train regularly for an hour in a temperate climate or air conditioned gym (and are fit in that context) the open air gym environment plus 90 minute sessions are so much more draining (fun at the time always) - and you have to rest rehydrate get in the share etc even if you are fit, so got to be realistic. And pro tip - if you go drinking in the evening, don’t kill yourself by doing the morning session. Plus of course the Russians are always going to try and take your head off. But they mean no harm
Question: I often hear training starts very early in the morning. Do you eat before the morning work out? If not, how do you have energy to complete the intense workout? Do you have a very large dinner the night before? Thanks !! Great vids btw.
Eating before training early in the morning will bloat you up and you wontbe able to train properly because your body is primarly working on your digestion. You also dont need to fill yourself with a big dinner the night before, something usual will do completely fine. The reason why most people, especially the Thai in this case, start training early in the morning is, because your body just recovered from the exhaustion from the previous day and is completely fresh and ready to kick off the training in the morning. Your body will adjust to that after a while so you dont need to worry about having no energy in the morning, because you havent eaten anything. Hope this helps ;)
usually people fast for the morning sessions and then eat right after the workout. fasting is highly recommended and you “need” energy as you should have slept for that. in most cases fruit juices or electrolyte packs can also help for morning workouts
@@seanfagan Language as well is tricky. I only recently found out that - contrary to the Lonely Planet language guide! - "mai chai" doesn't mean (as I thought) "No", it means more like, "No it isn't". It's like contradiction. I cringe when I think about it. Mai bpen rai is a funny one as well. It can mean "No, that's fine, it's okay", but it can also be a bit kind of "I don't care". All very tricky. The Thais obviously make a lot of allowances because they know you don't know. There's probably a dodgy grey zone where they think you know when you actually don't.
@@johnnyryall3966 In fighting and sparring you obviously hit people in the head. But you don't touch someone on the head socially. It's patronising. It shows a lack of respect. It's thought to single contempt.

Good tips Sean, I have been training in Bangkok and Chiang Mai on and off more for health and learn some self-defense, think to want to go next time to Phuket for 3 Months intensive training, I heard some people don't recommend Tiger Muay Thai they said they focus more only in the fighters! do you recommend any Gym in Phuket? what is your opinion about AKA Thailand? Thanks in advance!
I think most gyms in Thailand will teach you a lot, it would probably depend on your goals! atmosphere is very important! if you check out a gym and don't like the vibe don't go
Good list but what about maintaining financial stability? What sort of employment is available for foreigners? and how much money would you recommend to bring?
Regarding #10. If one comes to Thailand all covered in bad ass tattoos with a "I'm the baddest m-fu..er in tha world" because you are infamous around the gyms in your local area for k.o.-ing newbies and guys smaller than yourself and you're gonna show these small Thai dudes what a real fighter looks like. Oh boy! You're in for a nightmare. You can be damn sure that anyone of the chunky padholders can whoop your ass seven days a week without hardly breaking a sweat. And if you start bullying the small kids when sparring there, you WILL be introduced to the top fighters or the really mean padholder who was the elbow expert and they've been given the green light from the gym owner to fuck you up. Then they will toss the remains in the alley behind the gym.
most importantly, drink beer all night and forget about this sangsom ron shit these crazy bastards are going mad with all the time. so at least you go to the afternoon session ;-)
Great tips Sean and Paul. So I'm 62 years young and excellent physical condition my entire life. But just recently added Muay Thai to my training routine. One thing i would be concerned with if I spared someone in Thailand is if i teeped them. Its more of a reflex because of how much I've trained it but i always throw my lead teep when someone closes in on me.
