- I'm in new surroundings on a writing trip with The Darkness in Scotland so please, forgive the strange ah hoc setting. However, great news, Metallica have surprised everyone by releasing a brand new song only yesterday! Its called "Lux Aeterna". They have bestowed some much needed thrash upon our willing ears this week. What do you think of it? Are you happy, disappointed, excited, annoyed...talk to me.

Still waiting for Germany...
I really like this. Like a Kill em All riff, but produced like they do it now. I'm excited to hear the rest!🤘🏻
Wow❤
That's not thrash! They should've ended in '86! They've been diabolical for 30 years.
James and Kirk need to kick it up, and switch to banjos... electric banjo's of course.
An upright bass and Lars on bongos
I came here for the rock’n’roll but stayed for the philosophy: ”It's difficult to not sound like James Hetfield, when you are indeed James Hetfield.”
You're welcome.
Thrasher metalsong 🤘🤘
😅🤣
Jim Breurer does the best Hetfield impersonation...
Lol. Then there's.... mama said.
James' voice, for a man in his 60s is insane. It's almost like he's found his higher range from the early Metallica days. The fact it's Metallica meets Ac/Dc, meets Motörhead, meets punk, meets old thrash, meets heavy rock WITHOUT a thinly veiled reskin of old Metallica is just *Chef's kiss
Don't age the man! He's 59 until August of next year!
It's a fun mix of styles. "Back to the roots" isn't fully true because as Justin said, it is more on the "rock end of trash" which is spot on. Clearly has Motörhead feel but some of the licks really remind me of heavy rock or hair metal more than Kill 'em all, to be honest. Anyway, it kicks a**!
Not actually 60 yet. Kirk is the oldest
@I Just Wanna Talk About Games There's at least some truth in that, they still had to find their style and the lyrics were quite bold compared to their following records, so Kill 'Em All probably wasn't the best reference for my statement, but I hope you get the idea.
Metallica doing Motorhead. As always JH is spot on! 🤘🤘🤘
Best single theyve done in years, fast, exciting, and catchy!.... they came back and NAILED IT!!!😉👹👍
Always overreaction.
@@stephanea5364 and that can go to the exact extreme.....one thing for sure, Metallica gets a reaction
Love it, very Motorhead, especially the Overkill double ending.
Yeah I told my wife there's definitely some Motorhead in there even before Justin mentioned it. Overkill to be more exact, that double bass drum part is right out of Overkill.
@UseTheSupeRsonic this song absolutely SCREAMS "The Prince" by Diamond Head
@UseTheSupeRsonic Absolutely. 8:28 “Lightning the nation” - obvious nod to Diamond Head.
@@samswales9280 I was thinking more like It's Electric.
@@samswales9280 All I was thinking was 'Hit the lights' but yeah absolutely
Justin Hawkins is the living embodiment of a Matt Berry voiceover!
That's the best thing I've read all year
Haha this is bang on
Yes I can hear you Clem Fandango
You're probably having a HEART ATTACK!
Never thought that, now it’s all I hear😂
ya know what Justin?...I think YOU are AWESOME!!!!
"Life can be thrasher."
...words to live by.
Justin Hawkins - I am a classical and bluegrass Mandolinist. Hearing mandolin on "Love is only a feeling" and more prominently on "Rock and roll deserves to die" (well done!). Would love to hear any mandolin influences you (and maybe Dan) have had.
Love that you are so dedicated to your subscribers that you continue making content even whilst away or on a writing trip👏🏻
Thanks Jen :) You guys comes with me everywhere!
Awesome! Can’t wait to see which direction your creativity goes in next. Enjoy Scotland🏴 Safe Travels.
I’m more excited about the fact that The Darkness are on a writing trip! Can’t wait for more music boys! 🥳🤘🏼👏🏼
I love that you're so positive and supportive! Not to mention funny, honest, and charming. I also love how truly turned on you get by the ART of it all. You're a true artist: love all you've been given (others' art) and all you can give (your art). Cheers!
Alright!! Hearing you’re with the band writing made my day!!! Yous have been on a mighty epic streak. Banger after banger after banger! Keep the vinyl releases coming, please. And some reissues of the first three would be grand!!
Yay! New Darkness action in the works!
It's happening!
For me, this particular video has cemented this channel as THE BEST (and probably the only) place one should experience new music. Keen for you to please keep riding again, and again, and again, and again! (Thanks heaps too, this channel is beyond awesome 😊) 🤘😁
What I'm most impressed about with this song is that they managed to get a retro Metallica feel while still sounding fresh. That's really hard to pull off!
Absolutely
Good stuff thxs again for riding again Justin
From Prescott AZ
Thanks Gary!
Man I really enjoy seeing you fan out on the shit you like. It brings so much life and honesty to your channel which is why I stayed; I'm not even that big a The Darkness fan, but shit man, I dig the heckfire out of your channel. Well, that and your mention of Canada's Lassie, The Littlest Hobo. (I still sing that theme song frequently.)
Thank you. Continued success. Keep your stick on the ice.
Someone recorded a video of me on my last day in country on one of my deployments. I was vibing to the darkness(as one does on their last day of deployment), and started playing air guitar on my M-4 and pretty much mimed the whole song. I wish I could find that video. It was a great end to what was a heartbreaking deployment for me and my guys- and your music was a key part of that insane roller coaster that was that chapter of my life. Thanks for letting us have that music. It was a great gift that came along at the perfect time. Cheers, bud.
Love to start my day with a cup of tea and another Justin Hawkins video! This is the life!
I saw the Music video Yesterday and immediately was Looking forward to your reaction to the song, with guitarsolo and everything!! Amazing Channel Good sir of sirs!! Thank you for the great and always insightful entertainment and for always being a lux Æterna in these (at least sometimes) musically dull days 🤘🤘🤘 Keep on rocking Mr. Hawkins 🤘🤘🤘
It's got a "hit the lights" feeling.. love it
Isn't it basically the same song?
I saw the darkness open for metallica in Dublin when I was 16! 🖤 Loved yous ever since, Christmas time is one of my all time fave Christmas songs 😁
Cool, I have the same headphones as you, as well as the same issues managing the cord. And its cool to see THE Justin Hawkins doing the same head bobbing and whipping that I have always done to "Black Shuck".
james hetfield is such an underrated singer, he's always done great vocal runs!
I wouldn't say hes underrated. I mean, Metallica are generally considered the greatest metal band of all time, which is mainly for jame
Haha, I've already learned the main riff...its so badass! Good stuff Justin!
8:12-14 of Justin's video is the outro motif on Hit the Lights which begins at 2:34 and is soloed over by Kirk Hammett. His trills and tricks on HTLights is very similar to the Lux solo ( why reinvent the wheel, it works and sounds great)
8:06 Ooo to my ear, it sounds an intentional harp back to the middle 8 of "Hit The Lights" - Kill 'Em All (their first album) ... if purposely so, also a very welcome nod and fitting of the concept of this track / album as you described! VERY EXCITING!
P.s, maybe Kill 'Em All be worth reviewing on your prestiguous chanel?!
Cheers for the review Justin - loving ya stuff!
That bit in your video starting at 8:06 is a riff from Hit The Lights. Nice nod to that first song on Kill 'Em All and quite appropriate since this song has that first album feel to it.
Well that woke me up! Pretty inspired song, hope the rest of the record is as high quality as that. Best wishes on your writing session! Cheers! 👍
Thanks so much Reid, appreciate it!
Seeing you guys in Blum next year, can’t wait!!!!
Balance on earth has been restored!! Metallica new music!!! Oh wow, they have basically wrote the soundtrack to my life, been a fan since my early teens, 13 to be precise! Which by my reckoning is over 35 years! Literally first time I saw them at age 15 was just mind blowing! Seen them 60 times since and they are still on top of their game!! Incredible live band.
So this new song is just exceptional, Kill em All type riff immediately sprang to mind, maybe a little tip of the hat to Diamond Head but just different enough to say, yeah definitely Metallica and definitely can't wait to hear it live. One more important fact about Metallica, I saw The Darkness because of them! Dublin 03? Anyway, great video and great song! Cheers
I heard this for the first time yesterday. It's fantastic and I agree I think the break served them well. They sound so on point to almost way back to their early thrashier years. Excellent! Have a great writing time in wonderful Scotland!
Sounds absolutely lovely!
Starts out thrashy from the go!
Very cool, I get like British punk 2000 vibes in the best way from this. He IS sounding fantastic. Lars is doing a Steve Hewitt in Sleeping with ghosts type thing, I just get lots of similar vibes from it.
Hubby agrees Motorhead for sure.
That guitar has fat shoulders!
Much love to you Mr. Hawkins
Lars sounds great quantized!
Hahah
Everyone does it. Like having a go at a vocalist for comping vocals.
@@andrew6978 not everyone does.. Just those that need it.. Can't wait to see Lars perform it live! 🤣🤣
Lol finally somebody gets it. People are making comments everywhere "Lars' drumming sounds so clean!" Yeah, no shit, it's a fucking STUDIO RECORDING lmao. We all know shit's gonna be sloppy as hell live, especially the double-bass (although I would be fucking ELATED to be proven wrong by Lars).
No way that's Lars playing XD
and my home city, which you just visited recently and hoping to see you back at soon may I add, of Edmonton is one of the very few that will be graced by a touring Metallica..couldn't be more excited, or proud to be chosen, for it.
Ooooooo a writing tour, how exciting is that! And extra exciting that it's in the bestest country that ever was. 🏴 ❤ That good highland water will get your uber talented creative juices flowing right proper like! Slàinte!
Well well now, Metallica channelling Motörhead? Sounds like a return to the spirit of Kill 'em All - also amusing to note how your initial chord exploration sounded like a diabolical Hot For Teacher! Missed this version of Metallica, never could deal w the slower variant - also that solo bend brings fond memories of the Canadian band Piledriver and their iconic Metal Inquisition LP \m/
Welcome to Scotland! Can't wait for a new album! Hope you guys are somewhere beautiful, even my drive to work is awesome.
Quite a jam. Stoked to hear more of this record.
Reminds me of Hit the Lights.
Seen people complaining about Kirk's solo, that it wasn't elaborate enough, but anything too complicated I don't think would have fit with the feel of the song. To me, this is just classic Metallica with a punk twist...i.e. Garage Days
If Kirk turned up playing any differently we'd be asking where the real Kirk is!
I think the pentatonic/chromatic shredding just fits this kind of song well, especially looking at it as revisiting Kill Em All
@@ChrisFranklyn Probably looking for his Wah pedal 🤷🏻♂ 😉
Youre right! Its totally like the covers album. Its very much like crash course in brain surgery or the motorhead covers
Its nice to see ones old heros doing so good and sounding so great again....makes a old, broken metalhart weep fpr a bit, but only for a bit because this is a good song, indeed.
Well now I'm excited! Can't wait to hear the rest of it. Same goes for The Darkness, sweet anticipation. Here's to shaking the ether! 💡
Thanks for this thrasher of a review, and have an exciting (and fruitful) writing trip yourself up in The North. Love Scotland!
Great song, great review as always and good use of the sound deck lol 😂❤
I LOVE you're using a Rodecaster board like myself. This song is a BANGER and IMO could be one of the best songs Metallica's written in their career. It's new, so I gotta give it time before I crown it as one of the best. Keep Rockin JH. If you would cover a Metallica song live or recorded, which would you be all about covering?
It reminds me tonally of the Metallica cover of Stone Cold Crazy by Queen. That let them stretch out and away from three note thrash and do melodies. It's a positive step that it points back at the garage covers as inspiration without being johnny one note.
Can you perhaps tell us more about your writing trip(s)? How does that look like? How long are they? Do they work? Maybe for next comments day! Thanks Justin, keep on riding again!
8:05 is kind of reminiscent of the breakdown in Hit The Lights, before the solo. Cool song that definitely has more of that old school vibe.
The whole song feels like Hit the Lights, its great 👍
When I listened to this for the first time last night, I was already looking forward to Justin's reaction!
I wish I could pick up a guitar and just play a song by ear including the solo! But that's why Justin's on the big buck's in Scotland and I'm sat in my living room watching UA-cam videos living my thrash life.
Pleeaassee let the rest of the new record be on a par with this.🤞🏻🤞🏻
Hope you're enjoying your stay in Bonny Scotland!
I’m as excited as anybody about new Metallica and a tour and such, but that D18 has really got my attention. I fortunately own a 1968 D35 that I’ll never part with. With any luck I’ll be able to pass it down to the next generation in my family in due time.
With that said, every time I walk into any music store I always pick up a D18 (or a 000) and I’m always in awe of how they sound. You certainly have good taste in guitars
As soon as you mentioned Scotland you got a like from me 👍 beautiful place. Bon Scott approves 😁👍
Ps. James and the boys just get better and better....... Love this one 💪
( Unfortunately, nothing can beat Motorhead's false ending from overkill (gravedigger have an excellent go tho)
Live from Rab C Nesbit’s living room. Love it Justin 😂 welcome to Scotland 🏴
This sounds really good. I haven't liked much of their more recent stuff but I love this one!
The things I’d give to be mentored by you, dang… your musical intellect and presence is second to none!
Holding-off before coming in on that final chorus was an epic choice! Such a tease
"That's very AC/DC" - that's exactly what I said when I heard that part!
Loving this tune. A breath of fresh air.
The line "Full speed or nothing" appears to be a throwback to one of their old songs, Motorbreath
Oh I don't think there is any question.
You can feel his 'seasonedness' though as.hes clearly getting a bit older ...
Just seen the title and wanted to say Justin your awesome 🤟
I wanted to love it, and am so glad I didn't have to try !!! I saw them w/ Cliff open for Ozzy when I was 16... NOW when are you going to talk about RAMMSTEIN ??? Especially since they are retiring and their last two "final" albums ? I'm so happy you are still amazing and funny and a serious musician as well. And our pibble Murphy is in love with Jussy's Girl. XOXO - Cat
Love it when you go into the Alan Partridge voice, verry funny! Thanks for another great reaction!
Love your take on it Justin 👌
Awesome content, sir! Thx very much.
This is such a great song. Great reaction vid.
Motorhead, Diamondhead and kill em all into one.
Welcome to Scotland, Justin. Have fun.
I confess, I’ve avoided them since the mid 90s because as a teen every damn person I knew had the Black album on repeat for months (and months, and just when I thought it stopped, more months, which became years) and I got bloody sick to death of hearing just that one album over and over. But secretly, I love them and don’t listen because then I’d have to admit it. Also, love that jumper.
I was one of those damn people - sorry 🤣🤣
“It’s like metallica doing Motörhead” that was my reaction. Sooooo awesome 🤘🏻
I'm a fan of this song I must say..motorhead influence for sure..your channel is great by the way..I have few originals written if ever bored and want to check out..thank you beer
2:50-2:53 My reaction when you talk about Metallica AND share The Darkness is at work on new music! It's a great day! Much love Justin!!
I must INSIST on acquiring one of those sweaters.
Where from? Lol I want one too
Hope you enjoy your trip to Scotland. Ours is a lovely country.
I love your reaction videos!
Where thrash and punk meet. Bit of Motorhead, bit of AC/DC for sure. But also, a good dose of Suicidal Tendencies. Not a huge Metallica fan but this song is great! Looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.
Yay! Speed metal! This sounds like it could be off of Garage Days Revisited. Hellyeah!
It's so sick this song and I can't believe how good James' voice is. It sounds like a hidden track from Garage Inc which is from 24 years ago!!! Best thing they've released since I Dissapear.
Dissapear? Really? Ok, to each their own I guess. Personally I think there's all kinds of good stuff on their last couple albums. All Nightmare Long comes to mind instantly.
@@samuelferrell9257 There’s a few good songs for sure but for me it’s mostly sections of the songs I like and I’ve not liked the production since reload but this new song, the guitars and drums sound awesome again and it’s a short snappy song, James is actually singing Melodie’s again rather than shouting one word lyrics and it’s just kick ass
I very much got a "Garage Inc." vibe from it, when I first heard it.
love the hat, is awesome, may copy you and get one.
2 great musical minds collide - Rick Beto is reviewing this today too ❤
Well done guv’nor, nice review.
Ha ha. You're on form today m8. Another great video. 👍🏻
Man, with so much shit going on at the moment, getting a surprise Metallica song yesterday was the perfect remedy!! 🤘🏻
Great break-down, as always, Jussy.
Cheers mate
I saw you open for them in Dublin in August 2003, just before "Permission to land" took off.
Almost 40+ years of these guys rocking and I still can't imagine them stopping
Fr..James voice is really good ...and they're still great live
They should've ended in '86. They've been utter donkey crap, and a joke for 30 years
literally the most insipid take on metallica I've ever read lol go cry somewhere else. 86 was them copying Motorhead.
Rocking absolute shite💕✌️
@@tupu_683 '86 was thrash/half fluffy hippie crap, combined with a few random recycled Mustaine moments, all held together by Hetfield's average riff constructions.
Yes the last two studio albums (2008, 2016) have predominantly been back in E, after a few years in Eb and an an album in DropC. Going back to E was a Rick Rubin idea.
Blimey, a Fender F-03! Had one for 30 years and its really good.. Cost me £90 so got my moneys worth. They were made in Korea in 1981 I believe for one year only.. Love the vids 👍
06:15 yes! its a china cymbal, and its lars's signature sound, he replaced the ride cymbal for a china in the early 2000`s some people dont like it, but i personally found it amazing and i think thats what makes lars drumming unique. and there also a million memes about lars using a china instead of a ride.
A Chinese Ride.. should be called a Tuk Tuk
So the new Darky's record has a diddle ah diddle ah thrash number on it.
Hmmm.
Wonder why?
Great stuff from Metallica and great analysis from Juzzo.
Oh and if i ever jump on a drumkit a few " cymbal grabs" is mandatory.
Cheers.
That snare sound is both new and old at once! Hope that is used through out the album
Sounds great - so nice of them to do "Hit the Lights" again
Ah yes! The return of the classic Metallica and back to the days of Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning. They lost me for a while in the mid 90's but this has hooked me back in. I love this and I love them!
Reminds me of KILL 'EM ALL as much as anything. The Motorhead influence that was a big part of KEA is definitely there. Cool!
Diabolical in the best way indeed. Great video again sir.
Thank you!
Definitely a lot of motorhead influence on this song which is amazing!
Have great time in Scotland. You should ask bleed from within to come and jam with you, they are after all Scotlands finest 🤘
It's a bit like going down the local, for a pint with a mate, these videos and avin a chat, loverly
7:35 sounds like a hammer/pull-off on the 14th (of the G string) with one finger and doing 14-0-14-0... with the whammy bar diving (sorry for the terrible english).
I look forward to hearing whatever song you write today after listening to that banger
🤘😮
