This is the cleanest Lars' drumming has sounded since Garage Inc.
Lars is practising every single day.
@@MegaTeostyle he'd have to be
on the hardwired album it's better
Fuck yeah!! I think his sons also have showed him some new things and shit!! 😁👌
Studio *magic*.
People saying this is "pop" or "radio rock" are delusional. It's pure, old-school, British heavy metal. It's like an early Maiden, Motorhead, Diamond Head kind of sound.
Not delusional, most likely just comparing it to the standards of today. Had they made this song in the early eighties, it would be considered heavy as fuck.
@@BeardedDanishViking Yeah, it's like people are expecting Metallica to suddenly sound brutal. This song would be right at home on Kill Em All.
Well I haven't liked anything from Metallica in a long time but I definitely like this and that's saying a lot. I just hope the rest of the new album is good as this song or better.
Meh, people are going to bitch about this no matter what. Personally I thought it was great and if it turns a wider audience on to Metallica and the metal genres as a whole then surely that's a good thing.. right? I mean, it would be pretty inconsistent to spend all your time complaining about how the music you listen to is under appreciated and then start whining on social media when it gets huge amounts of airplay due to featuring in an enormously popular Netflix series. Surely no one would do that, right? 😏
Exactly. First thought was that it was old school.
James is one of only a few Vocalists from that era that I don't cringe when hearing sing live.
Idk i saw Judas Priest and Maiden Live in 2022 and 2023 and both are still pretty good for being close to 70 and 80
Personally I think this is a very well crafted tribute to their old "mentors", like Judas Priest and Motorhead: it's easy to detect some similarities with songs like "Overkill" and "Rapid fire", but they were able to elaborate these former ingredients and mix them with their own style.. In addition to this I would like to underline the high quality of both mixing and production, the sound is astounding..
Thought the same
There's a lyrical nod to Diamond Head as well. Loving this track!
Told my buddy it sounds like a combo of overkill and their cover of the prince.
Said the exact same thing about the Overkill similarities on other reaction threads.
Good catch! I can imagine Lemmy singing to this track with his killer rickenbacker tone on bass 🤘
Over in the guitar community, people are saying they don't like the solo. But that's fine..... for once, nobody's shitting on Lars, which is fucking great. For a shorter and more straightforward song like this, he played exactly what the song needed.
Yeah as a Guitar player I will say that solo is an absolute mess.
As a guitar player for 10 years, that solo is absolutely atrocious
Hammet: *pentatonics with whammy/slide abuse*
I like the solo. It’s not very technical at all, and it’s sloppy. But I have to compare it to HTSD and the solo is raw and angry sounding and fast. Great little solo to fill just a few measures in the middle of the song. Could it be better? Absolutely. But it really doesn’t sound bad at all. Sounds like a live solo but on an album which is cool to hear. And again, compared to HTSD, it’s great hearing Kirk play a solo like that again. It feels like he’s like FINALLY I can be released and just go wild with something. Not to mention, I really can’t fault Kirk for not being able to pioneer an iconic solo EVERY single song especially after SOOOO many songs they’ve made.
Kirk is recycling now.
Everyone discussing Lars or Kirk's play, but can someone say something about James' voice ? The guy is incredible. About the only singer in the whole music industry who keeps on getting better with age. James Hetfield is the fine wine of heavy metal.
He's the most talented member of the band.
I don’t get why people say this. Yes, James’ voice sounds great, but it does not sound as great as pre-1993!
hell yah james 60+ of age.
but don't forget Scorpions vocalist too almost 80 yrs old but still kicking.🤘🏼
@@the_minimalistic_adventure That is your opinion. You are welcome to your opinion. But you stated it as a fact, which it isn't. You make think he's better pre-93 and others think he's better now.
Honestly I prefer his rougher vocals. But objectively, yeah he does seem to get better. Does a pretty good job here, but I feel like it derails the whole Motorhead/diamond head vibe they have going on with the guitars and melody. Just my opinion ofc
I'm never a huge reaction video fan but this is just like sitting next to my old metalhead buddies listening to Metallica for the first time. Rips a fair bit of ass, psyched for the new album. ♥️
🤘🤘
@66Samus please do a cover on drums! I am learning too! Edit: Oh, I just saw the end. Sorry!😂
I was thinking the same thing.
Did you not notice Lars playing his black album tour kit ?!?!?!?!? That’s so bad ass
It's the first thing I noticed ❤️
I don’t think it’s quite as big though. It looks like there’s only 3 cymbals, compared to at least 7 or 8 in the 90s
@@Milfcum6969 its the 1994-1995 kit
Always wondered would he have the kits in storage or something 🎉😊
Wasn't that the kit he used on AJFA?
This song absolutely rips. I hope the whole album follows suit 🤘
Yes idk why people have an issue with this song (except maybe Kirk‘s solo which I think is kinda not creative and feels like it was written in 2 minutes)
Wait how is your comment from before the video was uploaded

The genuine smile you have says everything. I have been a fan for nearly 30 years and I was so happy when I heard this song and especially when I saw Lars playing the White kit with black hardware again. It brought back so many awesome memories.
I'm right there with you. I smiled the entire time and have been a fan for 30 years myself. Heck Lars is the reason I started playing the drums
@@schwanzmunster2503 Same here. I'll be a fan forever.
@@schwanzmunster2503 I too am a drummer because of Lars. I was in 3rd grade when the video debut of "One" hit MTV. Had to bug my parents for the next couple years to let me join the school band and learn to drum. Finally happened in 6th grade. Haven't stopped playing since!
@@schwanzmunster2503 Me too. People shit on Lars now, but the guy was an inspiration to so many up and coming drummers back in the day ... including me. There's so many better modern drummers out there, but most admit strong influence from Lars. This includes greats like Joey Jordison and my guy, the great Samus. Too boot, Lars's drum parts aren't always the easiest to learn! I remember many frustrating days trying to figure out his stuff. This was way before UA-cam where you say, "Oh! That's how that fill goes." The previous generation presses the next to be better and that is a beautiful thing!
@@shakeykarma106 Exactly. I have an appreciation for Lars that many don't share. Of course there are many, many better drummers but, to your point, they all look at Lars as one of their influencers.
I learned this song to surprise my guitar teacher because he's a MASSIVE Metallica fan. Safe to say today was an exciting lesson for him lmao.
That must have been a nice surprise man 🤘🏻
You could still do a drum cover of this, but with your own flair on it! I'd love to hear this with half time grooves and blast beats!
Yes. You must. OHHHHHHHH YUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRR🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I concur
+1. Do it! ooooh yuuuuur.
I've always wondered what certain songs sounded like with different drum beats
OOHHHH YUUUUURRRR!
Such a classic speed metal vibe to it. Totally agree that they still have it. If the rest of the album has this same level of energy, it'll be fantastic.
🤣
Yea OK kid 👌
@@Annihilation_0f_The_Wicked9066 it does have a similar vibe, but it's production is what I think sets it more to radio rock that classic speed metal.
I'm just glad these guys are still here and still playing music.

I really like and admire what a positive person you are. It was fun to listen to that with you.
thank you Robert!!
Agreed, not to name names but a lot of UA-camrs are hating on the song seconds in and not even giving it a chance
@@BobRocksGuitar I didn't like the song the first time I listened to it, but "watching with Samus" really brought a lot of positivity and fun. I guess it is good to see such a cool guy happy and who wants to ruin that, right?
@@vicenteneto8430 For sure. When I first heard the song I wasn't all that into it, either. However, I gave it another chance and really got into it
I love the classic heavy metal sound they used for this song; it's quite a lot of fun. This should sound good on the radio, too.
The overall recording sounds really good, it's really well produced. The actual track is awesome, tons of energy, the drums sound phat, and James sounds really good too. I'm super excited for this album (surprise). Just bought tickets to see them in Germany in 2 years!
do you already have a copy ?
He’s talking about the song y’a know? It’s pretty a given that the whole album production goes the same way.
Love it. ‘Bout time for a new album🤘🏻. Pumped to hear some more
👎
This sounds a lot like the older albums. Feel a bit send back in time. Love it.
It really doesn't....
Garage Days.... revisited ... and Kill em All..revisited
Unfortunately ... They did nothing new with this song. It sounds like when they're started in 1982...
@@spiropent82 which is exactly what those delusional boomers want, yet they complain.
Yep... as soon as I heard the opening riffs/song structure... it reminded me of the way they wrote back on Kill Em All (only a bit slower). This style of songwriting definitely has that 80's metal/hard rock sound to it. The production value obviously sounds current, especially the hints of the tuned chorus vocals, but that's all to be expected with modern studio techniques.
I like the subtle nods to other bands/albums in the lyrics. The Diamond Head/Lightning to the Nations got my attention immediately.
this song is a freight train. its nice too hear them play music again 💯

Fucking love Metallica. Takes me back to high school days. They still got it. Enjoy them while we have them folks. They’re legends. Gonna miss them when they’re gone.
It sounds like old Kill ‘em All! Of course has influence from every year of listening to bands they helped mold over their career. Hell yes! Good job guys
I love the way James sings Lux Æterna for the chorus
Feels like they remembered a part of the magic that was their early albums, but combined it with their mature techniques!
As long as the drum beat serves the song well, i have no complaints. thanks for the reaction samus!
The drum line honestly gives out "The devil went down to Georgia" vibes, the Steve Ouimette version. it's so kick ass.
And the white Tama drum kit is back 🤘
Epic drum kit
I've listened to rap my whole life but you and the punk rock mba really turned my taste around love this
*Thank you for just listening to the song and liking it for what it is.. a good new Metallica song. I am so sick of some ppl saying "well it's alright but it's not the Master of Puppets or And Justice For All albums." No it's not 30+ years ago and anyone who's still waiting for that remake/redo/recreation should just get over it already. They moved on and so has their true fans. This song doesn't give me goosebumps and just blow me away, but it doesn't have to either. They've already done that 100 times over. They're 60 yrs old, still shredding out quality music and that's good enough for me. I don't need every song to be a rehash of my teenage years to still appreciate, recognize, and respect their ongoing musical talent. Oh and congrats to your boner again!* 🤣🤣🤣
The issue I've seen with some comments is that what you mentioned or "Nothing new". So in the end its really annoying as it seems there's no way out of it. So its either shitty because its not old metallica enough or shitty because its not new.
@@Fermonx Maybe they're two separate groups of people ;-) You can never satisfy everyone.
@@Fermonx That's it isn't it? "Krik's solo is trash." No, Kirk's solo fit the song. I thought it had character. It wasn't just 1000 pentatonics crammed into 9 seconds of music. And then they bitch about Lars. "He's so "sloppy". But on this song everyone is complaining "It's too clean". It's not him. It's a drum machine, he can't do those kicks live". Yes, playing live is different than in the studio. Live is a frikkin' marathon. In the studio you get multiple takes of the same parts, with breaks when needed. Endurance isn't a factor. What do they want? One take drum tracks that sound like shit, and then they can say "he sucks". Everyone is a critic yet 100% of them can't do what they do. That sounds more like jealousy, than objective opinions.
If you like this and your a Metallica fan you should know this is fucking trash
Well said Stephanie 😎🤘🏻
I love the fact that Lars resurrected the old Granstar kit for this video. It's a representation of "the old Metallica" IMHO.
I love how he used the early 90’s white kit! Such a dope kit!
I’ve listened to the song like 20 times already haha . Grows on me each time. Listened to it in the gym this morning and it got me amped . 🤘🏼
I love that lars is using the black album KIT !!!!!
I love your excitement. Great video!
0:24 Literally my exact reaction
Glad you liked it! Reaction amongst my social circle has been mixed. Which is fine. The lyrics don’t seem to be saying a great deal but I can hear this opening a concert!
The thing that gets me most about the song, the thing that /really/ has me screaming is James' vocals like I am SHAKEN and I need to sing along 🎤
Everything about this new song rips man. The audio, visuals, everything.
Haven't been this excited for new 'Tallica in quite awhile
Lars was actually doing a couple gallops over the course of the song, ending the long kick parts with a gallop to cymbal. Simple little thing but was cool to hear Lars do something different for him anyway. :)

True lover of Metallica. You explaining it makes the song stand out better thanks
as a drummer i love playing stuff like this, simple warm up type stuff but with a fun jump to it and quick transitions and changes to keep your head in play
finally found someone who mentioned Metal Militia ! as a listener and as a musician, this is a great review dude ! keep ‘em coming !
There is nothing wrong with being happy about new Metallica. The song is fast, has an awesome riff, the drums drive the song along, and the theme is surprisingly upbeat.
They seem to be enjoying themselves playing and we should all be happy for and with them.
Did anyone else recognize the double bass beat from overkill by Motörhead ? I absolutely love it
Love the pure energy of this song, can’t wait to hear the rest of the album!
🤘🏻🇸🇪
He’s got that white kit back. I am PUMPED for this album! I knew Lars was practicing when they we’re doing those Monday streams during the pandemic when he was behind his kit.

Simple and effective. It really has scratched an itch that I didn’t think Metallica could do anymore.
It's been years since a new tallica' tune grabbed me by the ears. This MIGHT (*fingers crossed*) turn out to be a good album.
Nice reaction!!! Really enjoyed watching this! It's a cool song for double bass warming up!!!
James is one the best rhythym guitars out there man.
You're reactions to Lars was like listening to my self! 😂 "Oh double kick" "oh a fill!" "Wait this is good"
Edit* the drums reminded me of Overkill by Motorhead, repetitive but drove the song.
There are 2 things I feel I need to say. First - I grew tired of the endless comments about how Lars sucks. If you listen to Lars over the years, everything he's ever done has been DELIBERATE. Listen to him as an overall part of the band and you'll understand what I mean. Second.....Lars still sounds like this **AT 58 YEARS OLD!!!**
fuck yeah dude
AJFA was his best drumming. I started playing those songs in my second year of drumming. It all went downhill from there
It's nice and refreshing to watch a positive reaction vid to this song. Love your energy and vibe! I think the song totally rocks and I love Kirk's solo. James's voice is almost too good when he reaches those high notes. I hope to see them on tour and find out!
THIS SONG GOES SO HARD. It's so simple and I love simple structured songs so much LET'S GOOOO. What u said bro I didn't expect it to be this good

Great song. Got my tickets for both show in Montreal, cant wait!!!
I was literally gonna watch a completely different video whenever I saw this reaction video came up. I gotta say though, this song definitely had hints of some of their older songs in the mix. The double bass drum and the main riff both sound like songs you'd hear from the Kill 'em All record like Whiplash, Metal Militia, Hit the Lights, or even Motorbreath. It just feels like it's come full circle to me. I kinda wish there was more bass guitar presence in the final mix though.
Their music is timeless! It’s a shame their cost for venue isn’t!
Damn, I'm loving this! These boys still have it.
Now we need a drum cover for this song Mr. Samus... Do it!!!!

After how mid Hardwired was, this sounds soooo promising. This song is great.
It's great to hear that the production isn't brickwalled to hell and back. To be honest, the only weak part of the song is the chorus. Aside from that, it's a straight ahead, rocking tune. Can't wait to hear more. 🤘🏽🤘🏽

He changes the kit every album. What I’m hoping for is it wasn’t some lighting trick to make it look white when it’s actually yellow like the album haha
@@DillyDilly13 Oh, yeah... That could really be the case.
But Lars going back to the iconic white kit with black hardware would be sweet. Especially with the whole stage theme of Metallica being very much white over the last years.
