It's official: Randy Pobst is now one of my favorite drivers to watch. What a cool cat. I would love to be in the passenger seat with him doing hot laps.
911. The one car that manages to be both timeless and ahead of it's time. GT-Rs can chug out faster lap times all they want. The pure driving sensation you experience in 911 is unlike anything else you might drive. If you want to drive an extremely fast nintendo, you know what to choose.
I think the top 5 are Cayman, 911, Viper, Focus ST, and SLS Black, as far as driving fun goes. But I'm betting the F-Type is going to get in there. Can't wait to see Randy's reactions.
in behind the scenes video, i think they did mention that randy was doing five laps for each car, so they must be taking the best time out of five. plus, showing a lap with randy telling us about his feeling while driving the car is a good thing. for me at least.
so far porsche cayman s 1:41.26 aston martin vanquish 1:40.71 mercedes e63 amg s wagon 1:42.39 dodge viper srt 2013 1:36.43 porsche 911 4s 1:39.19 mercedes sls amg black 1:35.03 ford fiesta st 1:49.30 bentley continental gt speed 1:46.60
If you watched the intro video (round table discussion by the editors of MT) they explain how each year for this competition, the entry vehicles *MUST* be new to the market. The 991 4S is new for 2013. Last year, the 991 S (RWD) was in 2012's event because it was new then, and is not allowed this year even if Porsche wanted to provide a repeat with their C2S. Clear?
The GT3 is gonna dominate next year. All wheel steering, super fast shifts, super light, trick diff, carbon brakes, the list goes on and on. Porsche has dominated engineering in street cars for... uh... forever? I dont think it will be able to beat the ZR1 and Viper TA time, but it will be close, and it will be more consistent. Not too many Randys out there
MT asks the manufacturer to pick the the model, trim, and package of the car for this competition. Porsche had its reasons for this pick, and Randy seems to know why.
True, but when the SLS wins the track time (unless the GTR pulls a happy surprise upset and is 1.3 seconds faster than last year), comes in 2nd to the GTR in the drag race and is lauded for how fun it is to drive.. It will win.
You guys arguing about two completely different things. He's arguing it's $106,000 and you're arguing it's $151,000. It starts at $106,000 but your original comment said it's base price was $151,000. So he was correct.
and just imagine if they had nabbed a GT3!! I note that the most positive drives so far are the two porsches and they are the budget options (fiesta aside and viper?). Even the GT3 is cheaper than R8.
A driver's car is about usability, practicality and inspiration of confidence. I'm pretty sure most people here have never even seen a real SLS Black Series AMG and we only go by the opinions of the experts. Everyone has their preferences. Last year the Lambo Aventador tore through the quarter mile and blistered the track time. Yet it was one of the worst cars there. Only time will tell ;)
I'm not sure about practicality or else you are contradicting your earlier argument about bang for the buck. The Porsche 4S as optioned is over 100K. The Lambo did win the 1/4 and the track times - but it drove like garbage according to MT. The SLS on the other hand has been universally praised by them (see the head to head with the Viper and the stand alone video where it is taken across country by MT). That is the difference. The SLS will win this year because it has all 3 criteria.
I have one, single complaint and that is about buying a modern Porsche and how they are marketed with a long, long list of options. You're not really going to get one that's livable as a regular daily driver for 105,000. It's going to be 120,000 by the time you tick all the boxes that are necessary. Even adaptive steering is an option.
You don't have to get "adaptive steering" - that just changes the weight, and is unnecessary in almost all driving situations, road or track. Same with all the other ludicrous options. According to EVO magazine, dedicated to "the thrill of driving", the best 991 911 you can get is the basic Carrera with a manual gearbox. I'd bet it would also be more livable than one where you are constantly adjusting computer settings.
He's letting the automatic do all of the gear shifts? I thought part of what makes a driver's car is the interaction with the car. The downshifting, and rev matching and junk like that.
There is nobody else that is a pro driver to play devils advocate so what randy says is law. They need 5 pro drivers to drive all the cars this way it is not just what randy likes. I know he is a great driver but you need to hear different pro drivers who like different things
I love the GTR, but it lacks in feel compared to any Porsche. Hell you get more feel out of a Cayenne or Panamera. GTR is always a great car, but wont win best drivers car

love these onboards damnnnn love them so much
The Porsche is the best driver's car. It's as simple as that.
This car has so much going for it, it has every reason to win a best "driver's car" competition.
911. The one car that manages to be both timeless and ahead of it's time. GT-Rs can chug out faster lap times all they want. The pure driving sensation you experience in 911 is unlike anything else you might drive. If you want to drive an extremely fast nintendo, you know what to choose.
I always wanted to see Randy drive a 911 !

last year the 911s did it in 1.39.3, so this means the 4s is even better on the track. Hopefully 911 can again be driver's car of the year :)
in behind the scenes video, i think they did mention that randy was doing five laps for each car, so they must be taking the best time out of five. plus, showing a lap with randy telling us about his feeling while driving the car is a good thing. for me at least.
Can't wait for the Turbo!!
es fabuloso por su contenido, me gusta ese aleron posterior
100% agree. I can barely say my name while on a track, let alone narrate and be funny at the same time
I just love these hot laps ...

PDK does't like down-changing before corners? Heard a few old school kick-downs on corner exits!
The GT3 is gonna dominate next year. All wheel steering, super fast shifts, super light, trick diff, carbon brakes, the list goes on and on. If the Corvette ZR1 set a production lap record. One of these cars will definitely will set a lap record.
when you say base price, is that the base carrera model or the base carrera 4s?
That's why he gives his opinion on what the car is like to drive in each video.
hi i from germany and my question is: why are theese little yellow lights on the side, we in germany haven't theese lights!
what year is the best Antique model of Porsche 911 Carrera
MT asks the manufacturer to pick the the model, trim, and package of the car for this competition. Porsche had its reasons for this pick, and Randy seems to know why.
That beautiful sound...
True, but when the SLS wins the track time (unless the GTR pulls a happy surprise upset and is 1.3 seconds faster than last year), comes in 2nd to the GTR in the drag race and is lauded for how fun it is to drive..
It will win.
MotorTrend, please add data overlay from your vbox telemetry into the videos for next year!
The kickdown at 1:15 gave me goosebumps
how does a rear engine keep cool as opposed to a front engine?
Radiators in the front of the car just like any other.
Air ducts and proper ventilation as well
he always been for me, he shows that he really loves driving fast lol.
yup its a combination of all of that
Best drivers battle EVER!!!
what type of tire and dimensions ?
I like the shots of the Mobil1 cam, but please, could I get some shots of the GoDaddy, Hooters, Starbucks and AT&T cam next time? Thank you!
Yea I was suprised to see him doing that aswell. Wonder why though because I think he could do it better than the automode.
The Carrera 4S was only 0.11 faster compare to the Carrera S, in the hands of Randy Pobst.
I think I'll take the Carrera S.
I think Porsche 991 gt3 would win this competition easily. Sad that they haven't got this dream machine sooner.
amazing ownership proposition when used!
Porsche has dominated the race and sports car industry the longest. By "you people," you must mean every auto journalist ever, haha
Bingo, we knew it going in. Crown it, already.

*Ford Focus ST. I wonder how the Fiesta ST would do though. That'd be a fun track test: Fiest and Focus vs. two rivals.
I honestly think if the GT3 was being compared, it would beat the SLS Black Series on the track!
Like to hear his thoughts as the 4s compares to the s.
Roadkill is the best show on this channel.
Wow, faster than the Vanquish.... Good thing for the competitors that there isn't a GT3 there!
This is the car I would drive on the Autobahn and take to the limit. Especially the 911 Carrera 4S; it might rain in Stuttgart.
911 4S: 1:39.19. Cayman S: 1:41.26 1:41.26-1:39.19 = 0:02.07 = 2.07 seconds. You two averaged the correct answer at least.
what's the deal with the white electrical tape on the wheel?
Woah. Just like the Cayman. 50% percent increase. $100k base..$150k as tested. Those are some expensive options!
Porsche makes the best sounding 6 cylinders by far.
He said it feels like a race car, which is accurate, and has race car heritage. Don't troll.
Because this is BEST DRIVER'S CAR COMPETITION. Not "Fastest Lap time Competition"

Motortrend why don't you put the carrera and the 4s in a head to head?
Well.. in all fairness this is a video dedicated to the 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, so it didn't come as a surprise to me.
kids that deny Rand said it feels like race car are usually the ones that could never own a 911
Tnks !
Nice car
laguna seca race track..gran turismo prepared me for that moment
Is Mobil 1 an special kind of gasoline ?

Yeah, just ignore all the other lap time videos they posted immediately after this one.
Porsche. The best cars in the world.
Sweet
Yeah thats because of the engine layout. V6s and Inline 6s sound way different. Same goes for subarus enginges.
You can have him, I'm doing my laps with Chris Harris.
"This is a tool; this is a weapon!"
Love the yellow.
Just wait for the new 991 GT3!
I think the lap time they give is not for the lap in the video. I think randy does a couple of laps without talking and they put the best time.
Come on Porsche
Sweet Juice!
This is Best Driver's Car Competition. Not "best bang for buck" or "most horsepower" or "best lap time" or "quickest quarter mile time".

That's kinda not fair tho. We know Randy would trash talk The Stig for days and The Stig can't talk back :P
sorry.ford focus st vs mazdaspeed3 and ford fiesta st vs renault clio rs.that would be fun
We know how it would go. Focus would get beaten by Megane RS and even the Astra OPC probably.
So do the other magazines on newsstands...weird huh, all of the magazines are biased, for no reason at all
What a beauty!!! ;)
Freiburger and Finnegan ROADKILL!!!!!
I see base price: $106.580
maybe you should spend some money on glasses lol
They only cover models that got a rework in 2013.
Better than a GT-R in every way except lap time.
I'll take mine in pink!
I love the GTR, but it lacks in feel compared to any Porsche. Hell you get more feel out of a Cayenne or Panamera. GTR is always a great car, but wont win best drivers car
Pobst 2016
Where's the 911 GT3
I'm not trying to raise my self esteem. I'm just trying to get rid of ignorance.
This is the car. 400 hp is plenty.
mercedes sls amg black 1:35.03 that says it all
$150,000 base price!? Holy s***! Just buy a 911 Turbo for that much.
"best driver car" and you use the 4wd auto? How does that work?
2:24 he miss apex badly, hope this was not from the final lap.
porsche 911 4s 1:39.19 -- After Randy blows the last corner.
$45k in options WOWZA
You must be new here
