I've rented both cars and prefer the McLaren for two reasons: 1. It is lighter and faster. In fact, under full throttle on a straight run of a 1/4 mile or more, it is shockingly fast. 2. The Porsche essentially is invisible among daily driven vehicles. Few people can tell whether it is 10 years old or new. It blends in with 911s that are worth half the price. The McLaren, with its exotic car shape and dihedral doors is light years ahead of the 911 in the appearance department. The one I rented was like the king of cars, its driver was perceived to be extremely wealthy and wise.
How could that be when we're talking about 2 different driver? Driver skills always play a role in racing (especially around tracks, where the margin for error is greater).
@@andreasbeaufort3594 My friend, I'm sure there are drivers who can record higher speeds in the 570s (and the 911 4S) around that very same corner. That may indicate he is the better driver. Some cars have better cornering capabilities than others. And some drivers know how to better handle cars around corners than others. Now, in this particular instance, the rear wheel steering may have offered the Porsche the cornering advantage. The feature was design for better cornering, anyways. But no AWD or rear wheel steering is what I love so much about McLaren supercars...None of those driver assist gimmicks. To me, that is what makes for a pure driver's car. Karun, body roll has nothing to do with "throwing weight to the outside of the car". Weight transfer is a function of track and centre of greavity height. Both are great driving machines. But in general, I am more impressed with McLaren supercars. None of McLaren supercars feature AWD and or rear wheel steering. To me, a pure driver's car is one with no AWD or rear wheel steering system.
@@TheTmat007 That's an odd assertion, considering Porsche is one of the few manufacturers that still offers a manual tranny on some of their cars. McLaren hasn't offered a manual in any of their cars other than the F1. They also give you dual-clutch only--another layer of separation between the driver's foot and the engine. I'm not sure how this amounts to a "pure driver's car". The cars are definitely good for what they are, but "pure" would be a bit of a stretch, unless you're only talking about the F1, which is so far removed from normal, that it's not representative of the brand as a whole.
@@LordPrometheous No, it's not an odd assertion. That's why I say it's an odd assertion, because the reasoning doesn't follow the claim.
So this is more about testing two drivers than it is about testing the cars??? Reckon Fifth Gear has lost the plot. Maybe you should re-brand to "Stuck it- in Drive'.
Or maybe get a better driver in the porsche. There is no way in earth, an over steering 570s can keep up with a 4s on a corner then power past as if it had some sort of super speed mode. It's like fast and furious films when they all of a sudden find another gear lol.
Come on Karun! Body roll doesn't influence weight transfer unless you're in a 2CV with 20 degrees of roll, and then only a little! Weight transfer during cornering is a function of G force, track widths and CG height. Roll moves the CG to the outside by a tiny little amount but the difference between a stiff and soft sportscar there is negligible.

@@miketheman4341 the test was about handling not top speed. The 4S has more traction through the corners than the S which is rear wheel drive like the 570. By the way there is no gts or gt3 available at the moment for the 992 gen 911 and the turbo is 650 plus horse power with 4 wheel drive so the 570 doesn't stand a chance
yungdadi
Yes which is why you can test the existing 991.2 or simply wait till next year. Again this is an apples vs oranges comparison as the 991.2 models are still in huge demand. Do you need a list of 911 variants that cost as much as the McLaren with FAR MORE power?
@@miketheman4341 the goal was to review the 992 not the outgoing model which they have already reviewed. And if you know 911s very well you will know less power in a 911 is not a disadvantage. They have lots of traction because of the location of the engine and thats why a 4 wheel drive Porsche is a huge advantage over a rear wheel drive McLaren 570. Read my first comment again cos I am talking about traction not horse power and the test is about traction not horse power
yungdadi
No the test is about winning the challenges set up! That’s the point!
To put the 4S up against a much pricer car is dishonest. If the point is to pick the best all around car then simply tell the viewers that for roughly the same price one can have a Turbo S! Hint those are available now in some markets and certainly in the next few months in almost every market. All dealers are taking orders.
The Turbo S is certainly available to Fifth Gear!
Lol that porsche was just sniffing up the mclarens butt the whole race in the corners. NOW that mclaren costs 50% more with that same money you could buy a Gt3. LOL now that would have been a spanking worth seeing.
Why the fake 911 sound? 😂
The modern day DC2.
Tiff left, i'm leaving too
This is proof the basic 911 has gotten way out of hand. To be anywhere near the conversation with a McLaren?! The original 911 was the size, weight, and power of a Miata.
Is McLaren bankrupt yet?
The mclaren in this review is going to depreciate so badly in less than a year.
God knows when they would. They are on the edge I guess.
Just signed a large Sponsorship deal with Gulf so to answer your questions no and they won’t be. Porsche are more in danger of that except they are bankrolled by VW !
@@rocketing47Please don't make up false ideas in your head and post them as the truth. Porsche is the world's most successful sports car brand. In the 2019 financial year, Porsche AG increased deliveries, sales revenue and the operating result before special items to new record levels. The company handed over 280,800 vehicles to customers in 2019, corresponding to an increase of ten percent compared with the previous year. Nr two in JD customer satisfaction! All while Mclaren's shocking customer service and continued production quality issues is causing serious financial problems. You say VW bankrolls Porsche. Easy mistake to make that.
@@henri7359 Not only that Porsche holds there value very well and there are reliable.
Why not lap times?
The Brit's once again promoting a British sports car. . .
Put the same size tires that are on the Porsche on McLaren and it will eat it up everywhere let alone down the street away!
Porche usually wins these things
If you want it reliable get the 911. The McLaren looks better, but will cause a lot of headaches. McLaren needs to address their reliability issues.
What was the point of this comparison? They're not in the same price range and one is AWD and one is rear drive.
I guess the point is that more powerful and more expensive doesn't always mean better. I just saw a sports car very nearly hold its own against a supercar, thought that was worth watching.
Both are great driving machines. But in general, I am more impressed with McLaren supercars. None of McLaren supercars feature AWD and or rear wheel steering. To me, a pure driver's car is one with no AWD or rear wheel steering system.
how does AWD or RWS make a car not pure?
@@LordPrometheous
Because both feature reduce driver involvement.
@@LordPrometheous
No, it's not an odd assertion. Are you denying cars with AWD and RWS make it easier for the driver to achieve good results with less involvement, compared to those that aren't equipped with the features? That's a fact! Even the McLaren driver said it's more difficult or challenging to dive than the Porsche. I'm not impressed by cars that have those features (even though Porsche build great cars). I want and car that demands more from me. And at the end, I may be a better driver. That's the experience I'm looking for, with exotics.
@@TheTmat007 I didn't say anything about what features make a care easier to drive, that was never the point. You said AWD and RWS make a care less pure, yet you favor McLaren, that doesn't even have a manual option in any of their offerings. You say you want a car that demands more from you, but that preferences steers you towards cars that only come in automatic? That's why I say it's an odd assertion, because the reasoning doesn't follow the claim.
Why are they using a 911 991.2 GT3 RS sound over the 992 Carrera 4S? 🤔🥴
Because the 992 is out
Porscheguy Ou you are making zero sense
The difference being that the McLaren is more expensive than this model 911 and unlike McLaren Porsche is not on the verge of bankruptcy.

Another mis-matched car test. No reason why the new turbo S wasn't included!
Turbo s is too fast for 570s....it literally gives 720s a run for its money.
Came for the Porsche fanboys, sure enough there are lots, worse than gtr fanboys
Try that with the new turbo S

Has Jason stolen Tiffs jumper?
Needs Tiff so badly. Unwatchable without him
for me, Tiff IS Fifth Gear, but this is better than nothing. I do wish the editing was better. All the jump cuts ruin it for me.
570s is a thorough breed with the monocoque, the Porsche is a work horse with the boring design.
Id still rather a porsche haha specially in a drag :p 400m the mclaren would lose :p
How is the new McClaren? A 570?
not easy to nitpick perfect but yall managed it fine..... porsche wins mclaren is ok but just not a porsche
A 992 4S is a supercar?
He keeps saying PORSH! What is that?

Porsche is better in every way.
Porsche all day because it go all day
Too many ads ☹️
I didn’t even see a single one!

What if they took a more powerful Porsche???
Turbo s......
Porsche all day every day.
Stupid comparison should have been with the bas 3.8 litre porche turbo
The Turbo S would obliterate the McLaren and still cheaper.
no it isn't cheaper. Turbo S is 225K with any options at all. Get real
Porche all Day, every Day!
Tiff is better in my opinion.
Mclaren is ok for a pritty, small mussel car, and thats where it ends.
