I think a lot of what makes sequel games on the same console not sell as well has to do with the early hype of the console. Early on there's a big hype surrounding the console because of how new and fresh it is at the time, and with that hype comes more people willing to get games they might not have otherwise in order to get their console purchase worth it early on, so they buy the first console installments of various series. When the sequels release, there isn't that early hype anymore so not as many people are willing to pick up the follow up game and are pickier with what they'd buy now. The only Switch sequel game to sell more than the first from what I've seen if Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and that has to do with it being Kirby's big transition to 3D which was a huge, fresh change compared to Star Allies. Whereas games like Tears of the Kingdom, Xenoblade 3, Fire Emblem Engage, Splatoon 3, etc don't have that big of a difference or transition, so they don't sell as well as the first game. Either way the sequel games still sell well and both Switch installments together probably would've made more money than just the one installment for the Switch's entire life anyway. Sorry that I said a lot lol
People like to buy one entry per console. If the existing audience already has a game in a series and doesn’t think the next entry is better, they won’t buy the next entry. Then when you move on to the next console, suddenly people have a console that doesn’t have a game in a series they like. They’ll buy a new game regardless of whether it’s better than the one they have already.
Well the thing with my mindset about totk is when I look at it by its self it is an amazing game for the Nintendo switch. While not perfect I don’t think it’s a bad game. When looking at it as a sequel, while still good, it barely does anything exceed from botw and this isn’t as strong for a sequel in my opinion.
i really hate this concept of thinking sequels aren't worth it just because they often aren't as profitable... smaller successes are something that are necessary to the industry and without them being respected we'd only have game devs pouring millions into trying safe big hitter games without any smaller experiences or sequels that get to try more unique things. i think this is really apparent when you look at the exclusives list between playstation 5 and nintendo switch. nintendo recognizes the importance of these smaller successes and it keeps players happy which is why they are so successful... rant over lol

I find that so odd! If I buy a game I’m pretty much guaranteed to buy its next one personally
I mean BOTW has been in the market for a long time too
True! The other games I listed have been out for much longer and the trend of sequels selling less mostly stays the same!

That’s fair enough, I wonder what people would think of it if it wasn’t a sequel
i think the only rezon tears is sold les is 1 its newer and 2 botw was on 2 consoles
BOTW sales numbers I said don't include the Wii U!
