Nick Lyndhurst (who plays Rodney) lives near me and everyone hates him. I used to work in a store he frequented and was told "if he comes in, go hide out the back because he keeps trying to get people fired". BUT, I'm kind of on his side. I've heard dozens of negative stories from people who've met him in the street but ALL of them involve someone shouting "oi oi Rodney!" at him, like geez give the guy a break! He's entitled to a day off just like the rest of us!
Personally I preferred his other show "Goodnight Sweetheart" anyway 🙂

Pinning this for the people who develop parasocial relationships with celebrities & are unable to leave them alone in public because they're so brain-dead that they think they know that celebrity. It needs to be stopped.

@@EmbraceTheSuck21 Exactly. There's another celeb down this way (I won't say who in case people start triangulating my location, which isn't great for those celebs' privacy either) who is in her 90s and STILL gets harassed in the street. I imagine there are times she must feel seriously intimidated, especially as she often goes out alone.

There are several reasons why this became a hit: 1) excellent actors and story writing 2) us Brits love rooting for the underdogs 3) It's one of the only sitcoms that can make you both laugh and cry within the space of 5 minutes. It's an emotional rollercoaster, full of drama, while also being hilarious at times. It's much deeper than your average chuckle-a-long sitcom.

Guys so, so glad to see you finally start OFAH the UK's favourite sitcoms. You've done excerpts, but now you'll get to see the whole thing in context. Enjoy some of the best writing and funniest gags you'll laughs out loud to. BTW, the writer John Sullivan sings the theme song and he wrote an earlier sitcom in the 1970's called Citizen Smith about a would-be revolutionary in London. When he was thinking of a name for his (then) new sitcom, he took it from an episode of Citizen Smith called 'Only Fools & Horses'. The chandelier gag & open bar flap fall you've already seen but there's plenty more to come. In its later years, it used outdoor locations in Bristol - love to show you the real-life Nelson Mandela House, the spot where a certain 3 wheel van breaks down with its occupants in fancy dress.

So many reactors - especially from the US, watch short compilations of Only Fools and it really doesn't hit, it's the kind of thing (as I'm sure you know now) that builds up and you need the whole context and back story for which adds to the impact of the comedy. As you correctly notice at the end, it's the kind of show that is fun but has a lot of real wholesome moments and sometimes deals with very serious issues. For us in the UK, Fresh Prince was a bit like that.

Grandad before Uncle Albert, most loved British comedy of all time. Hush Puppies are a shoe brand but there is a lot of Cockney rhyming slang in it, however Cockney rhyming slang is cut down to one word so you will hear Del Bit saying “Ruby” fairly often which in cockney Rhyming slang is Ruby Murray which means Curry, Del usually cuts it down to one word you really have to keep up. Don’t mistake Del for being stupid, Rodney is just more straight laced and honest than Del that’s all Dels a trier lol Good luck lol

If I had to give a quick synopsis of OFAH to a US citizen, I'd typically describe it as "A kind of British version of Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy".

If you're only going to watch the first episode of each season. You will be missing side splitting classic moments. Only Fools is a cult classic in the UK. Generations will watch it for years to come.

It's a proper classic over here. It gets much better. It's a bit like Blackadder. The longer they did it, the better they got at it.

Sanford and Son. You need to watch “Steptoe and Son” the original series it was based on.

One of the three comedies that always make me laugh years and years later. Porridge, Fools and Horses and Dad's Army. These three and the radio show Sorry I Haven't A Clue is enough for anyone.
