  • Muckleshoot Tribal Elder Mike Jerry Sr. passes down traditional techniques of salmon smoking to the next generation, and in doing so, connects with the ancestors who came before us. The salmon are an essential part of Muckleshoot culture and spirituality. Smoking salmon is a way of connecting to our roots and preserving tradition for generations of Muckleshoot Tribe members to come.

    Love the smoke house smell theres nothing like it, in our native culture as a southeast alaska keex kwaan nation tlingit we take great pride in our way of life allways remember feed the elders the needy this is past on ancestors to great grand parents grand parents aunties uncles our elders our parents knowlege wisdom we pass it all on to our future generations cause when we walk into the forest on our way to heaven we know our people our native people will survive .its who we are as natives teachers of what we know to insure we pass on what we know ,to us natives that's honor .

    This is how we can achieve meaning, and even something like immortality, when we adopt the traditions of our ancestors and continue their work so that they are not forgotten and honoured.

    I agree, it's an art, and also so delicious when done this way. It's great to see the next generation learning this art and keeping it traditional, I don't think there is any way you can modernize this, and thank goodness lol.

    So cool to see the way other traditional food is made. In Norway we coldsmoke a bit different but also a bit the same if that makes sense. Would been fun working with you guys for a week😊😊

    Love me some smoked fish or upsquee in my language (im not completely thats how you spell it) i live in a small village in bc called kyuquot and every month my uncle goes into his shed and makes alot of upsquee (like 4 plastic bags worth)

    This is awesome. Why isn't this one of those UNESCO World Heritage protected traditions? You know what I'm talking about? The Tribe should apply to UNESCO.
