… at 80 years old , I have never had an inclination to live the pioneer lifestyle that you seem to thrive on …. but whenever I see one of your videos , I thoroughly enjoy the enthusiasm you have for your life … I am happy for your choice ; it is so right for you 🥰
My absolute favorite way to eat canned salmon is in a cream cheese dip. Whip 8 oz of cream cheese, add 1 tbs of lemon juice, 6 oz salmon, garlic salt, garlic powder, black pepper, salt to taste, and fresh chives. Mix it all up, form it into a ball... and top it with crushed pecans. Pair with your favorite crackers and it makes the absolute best dip ever.
Yessss...it is my favorite also. I used to always take it to family get togethers. I sometimes add a couple drops of liquid smoke for that smokey flavor or smoked paprika. Yummy 😊😊
Maybe it's a southern thing; I don't know, but we like to take canned salmon and make a Salmon Stew with it. It's a simple recipe but so delicious on those cold nights. I peel and dice up several nice size potatoes and boil them until tender and then drain them. In a pot I will add the cooked potatoes, 2 cans of salmon, a stick of butter, salt and pepper, and then fill up pot with milk. Heat this all up until hot; stirring occasionally so the milk won't burn. Once it's ready to serve up in bowls, we then like to take saltine crackers and then crumble them up and put over our stew in our bowls. Like I said, it's simple, but it's so tasty. I can't even image how good it would be with fresh caught salmon.
Southerner here as well. We grew up on this recipe, only we didn't put potatoes in it and we added evaporated milk or heavy cream (whichever we had on hand) before finishing it off with regular milk. Made our oyster stew the same way.
@@ASimpleLifeHomesteading So, yours was just salmon and the milk/cream? I've never heard of if made this way; that's interesting. Everyone I know that makes it puts potatoes, but that's not a lot of people. Even though I live in the South there is still a lot of people here that have never heard of it or have never tried it. Oyster stew is made the same way, too. We love it, my husband will also add cheese to his. LOL But we love adding hot sauce to it. Looking forward to cooler weather to make it.
Y'all are like me and my husband we do everything together.. Been married almost 22 years he's still my best friend and I couldn't imagine doing life without him ! Prayer's with all y'all's endeavors !
I am Jim Baird from Plain City Ohio. I so much enjoy your videos. I am 80 years old and watch as many of your videos as I find. You two are so well matched, Thank you for providing excellent television. I was married for 50 years and my wife moved to heaven. You both make positive watching for families and promote happiness. Thank you for your thorough attention to detail. Stay blessed.
Very good canning video for canning anything. I was raised on a large farm and we canned so many things. I can understand how important a great video can be to new canners. Thank you!
It's good to see a video made by people who have actually done this many times before and perfected the method. There are WAY too many youtube videos of people "showing us how" to do recipes that they are literally atempting for the first time as they're filming it. Good job guys :)
My husband and I do canning together. We enjoy working together and its always fun to see what we come up with. Some stuff we love, some we throw away, but being together is the best part. Oh, and we are 73 and 70 yrs. lots of canning over 50 years. Maybe our marriage as been good cause we can together. 😀
I've never pressured canned and yes I'm one of those scared of them 🤪. I like how you explained the process of canning and how to use the canner better than some I've watched, so thank you two for explaining the what and the why. Looking forward to the next. Blessings to you both. 😊🇺🇲
You can do it, give it a try and you'll never look back. It's really super easy and so worth the trouble. I've been canning all day, kidney bean, great northerns, and beef stew. When I don't have the time I use these to put a healthy home cooked meal on the table in under 30 mins.
I'm a scared of them person too. 😄 However, I got a Carey Electric pressure canner a few years back and have been canning up a storm. It's something you might want to check out. It was an easy way for me to get going and learn what I like to can. They have built in fail-safes so it can't over pressure and will shut down if something goes wrong. They do small batches... 4Q or 5P, and can run up to a full 15 lbs so you can use them even at high altitude. They aren't cheap, but they also have browning, slow cooking and open cooking features so they replace several appliances. That was a big space saver for me with a small kitchen. Also, you can do any Instapot recipe in them. This year I have a big standard Presto, and I'm at least pulling my big-girl pants out of the closet. We'll see how they fit😬 Daunting! LOL But I'm still loving my Carey for when I get a few extra pounds of meat on sale... a pint is a pound, so if I find a sweet deal on chicken or something, I drag home five extra pounds and do a 5 pint Carey load. I also double batch things like beans, chilis, soups and stews and run those for grab and go meals.
I didn't have anyone in the family to show me how to pressure can but I just read everything and watch RoseRed on you tube. She is a retired scientist and goes into detail on how to safely put up food.
@@kellyhawes9293, she is a good teacher. I also follow her too. She is still working full time as a pprofessor. But here is where I go for flavor and from the heart of their canning. They love to eat and love to test out all sorts of flavors. The first thing I made of theirs was their mustards. So good!
I learn so much and really feel gratitude I found your channel. Learning how to prepare meals with preserved food (especially expensive proteins) with simple recipes helps to justify buying in bulk at Costco meat, fish, poultry dept. Especially for those financially struggling: loss of jobs, young families, single parents, welfare, soc. Security.... Thank you for sharing your hard learned lessons in healthy meals.
My mom makes salmon ball every year for Thanksgiving and Christmas. It was her mother's recipe. It's 1 large can salmon, 1/4-1/2tsp liquid smoke(you probably won't need as your salmon is already smoked) 2tbsp finely minced onion, 8oz room temp cream cheese, 1tsp lemon juice, 1tsp horseradish, 1/4 tsp salt. Mix all together day before serving, form into ball and wrap in plastic. Place in fridge overnight and enjoy next day with crackers(Ritz are the best).
Recipe idea: Try salmon quesadillas! Top tortillas with canned salmon, green chilies, Monterey Jack, green onions, sautéed peppers and onions… fry up and serve with yogurt/sour cream and any of your amazing salsas/kimchis!
Oh great now I have to pay 20 bucks a salmon fillet to make quesadillas because I have to try them, maybe a taco too. It is your fault that I am 20 dollars poorer. Thanks for the recipe.
I love that you made a point to check the manual for your specific pressure canner. So many people on many of my Facebook groups are always asking how long to process different foods, I tried for so long not to comment but eventually I started telling them to please check their manuals. You both are great at explaining whatever it is you are doing.
I have seen everyone of your videos, can hardly wait for new ones. You guys are hard workers to survive. Me being a mom and Nana of 74 yrs, I can see that you guys work together and work hard. May the lord bless you two and be with you.🙏
If I was still a student, I would argue for getting credit for watching your "how to" videos, they are so good. It's amazing how many meals you canned today from your catch. I wish I was your neighbor - I'd trade for your salmon....not the kids or the dog...but anything else. Thanks you two for another really great video. Suzi
Details, details, details on this canning process. I love it! I started canning because of you two and this video was a huge help. Have a good one....thanks for the great tutorial.

You've made my day much better(I had a really agitating and disappointing day today). I was so glad to see your post pop up. I appreciate the guidance on pressure canning. Each person has their own style, but glad to hear you follow the book. I know it's a bit of work, but watching you take it at your own pace calms me down after a rough day. Thank you!!
Well, that was a lot of salmon! A labour of love. I imagine your home gets stuffed to the brim at the end of harvest time. I love seeing the final results of all your bounty every year. I hope you are not in harms way as those wicked storms pummel Alaska. Be safe!
I love the diversity of your videos!! I love when you do a video focused on one thing, like this salmon, that takes several days. I also really love the more “day in the life” videos. I love that you continue to both! I’m not a huge salmon fan, but I feel like if I could catch salmon in Alaska I would like it a lot more.
No matter which way you have canned the salmon they look delicious. Arielle you gave gave great instructions on how you do a safe processing of salmon. Until your next video, take care and be safe. (Judy NB)🇨🇦🌲
Your fishing harvest this year has to be a personal best. Your canning regiment reminds me of my grandmother and mothers canning. Your ability to do it outside also reminds me of of them!!!!
That tag team effort kicked ass!👏If someone had told me I would be waiting for every video, and watching on the edge of my seat, I would of never believed it! Thank you for bringing all of your Alaskan adventures to life for me!💙
wow! what an excellent video you two, I am 61 years old & never canned a thing in my life, I think I could can anything now after watching you, I have been watching your channel since you were road tripping moving to Alaska, I live in Australia & I enjoy seeing what its like where you live, you both have continued to find ways to improve your channel, well done!
You two are such a great team. Especially with this canning episode you can see how experienced the last 4yrs have made you. What a nice batch of jars. I think this must be one of the best YT-how-to-can vids out there! I’m as sure as heck gonna defer people to this one if they need tips. It’s the best imho!
You guys must have a great deal of comfort, in that no matter what, you can live off the land. Yes it is hard work, but the fruits of your labor are gold of another variety
Praying for you as the weather has looked fierce and I have heard that there have been earthquakes, thank you for the lessons on canning, looks really good
Another great video. I've watched your previous canning videos but your instructions tonight were clear, concise, and accurate. Sorry you has a couple of failures but seeing those in reality is so much better than reading a manual. You guys are a great team too! I love smoked salmon, especially wish I had tasted your candied salmon from last year. That looked so good.
All those pink filets to can, from all those fishing trips and adventures! Awesome! I'm not a fan of salmon, but I am a huge fan of ya'lls, all the trips you take us on, all the ups and downs, hunts, I enjoy every post! Love ya'll ❤️
I make salmon patties. I start by sauteing diced onions, garlic, red bell pepper with olive oil. Then I add old bay seasoning, dill, egg, corn meal, and salt and pepper into the salmon. I also make a homemade tartar sauce to go on top. Yum and very delish.
I love your channel and have watched every video multiple times. I have recently been rewatching all of them and realized that I had a recipe you might be interested in. I am sure you have made a million salmon cakes but this recipe makes far and away the best salmon cakes I have ever tasted. They are loaded with veggies and I know how much you like veggies so I think they might be up your alley. VEGGIE-LOADED SALMON CAKES INGREDIENTS: - 20 oz salmon, cooked or canned salmon (drained) - 1 small onion, sweet or red, minced - 2 stalks celery, finely diced - 1 small red bell pepper, finely diced - 1 small yellow bell pepper, finely diced - 3 Tbsp butter, unsalted - ½ cup mayonnaise - 2 tsp dijon mustard - 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce - 2 Tbsp capers, minced - 1½ tsp. Old Bay seasoning - 2 eggs - ¾ cup Panko breadcrumbs (more as needed) - ¼ cup parsley, chopped - salt & pepper, to taste - oil, for frying INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Melt the 3 Tbsp of butter in a saute pan and cook the onion, celery, and bell pepper until softened. Season with sea salt and pepper. Let the vegetable mixture cool completely. 2. Combine the cooled vegetable mixture with the salmon, mayo, Dijon, Worcestershire, capers, Old Bay seasoning, eggs, Panko, parsley, and sea salt and pepper to taste. Mix until completely incorporated. Start with ¾ cup of Panko and see if the mixture forms a nicely shaped cake. You can add up to 1 cup of Panko if needed. 3. Let the mixture chill in the fridge for 30 minutes and shape into patties of your desired size. 4. Heat a skillet with oil and fry the salmon cakes until golden brown on each side, about 3-4 minutes per side. NOTES: 1. Be gentle with these when frying. The key to a good salmon cake is plenty of salmon and not as much filler (breadcrumbs). You can add more breadcrumbs but they do stay together with just ¾ cup (chilling them helps!). Just be gentle when handling the cakes, make sure your oil is nice and hot, and try not to flip them too much (just once will do). 2. For the herbs, you can add all parsley or a combination of half parsley and half dill. 3. Try topping these salmon cakes with a lemon yogurt sauce.
Very good that you went over all the safety items. I have canned venison and it was delicious but followed directions. Thanks, Ariel, for the tip on the vinegar to help reduce the fogging on glass cans.
My son lives in southwest Michigan by the lake. I live in Arkansas and go for visits often. We catch coho salmon and take it to a local processor to smoke. One time we made salmon dips, we called it a dip off. Who can make the best dip? Cream cheese, smoked salmon, and anything else. He edged me out with a cream cheese, salmon, roasted red pepper, garlic, parsley, sesame seeds, secret spices haha. You get the idea. Try dips!
My mouth is drooling 🤤 watching those jars of Salmon coming out. I can’t imagine how delicious they taste. I love watching the process of catching, cleaning and canning the Salmon.
Always excited for a new video from you guys! I never miss one!! I would love to spend a day with y'all on your adventures. I bet it never gets boring!
I have been watching you since you both headed to Alaska, I has to be the best weekly show I watch on UA-cam, thank you so much for the honest entertainment, take care🙏🙏🙏
That looks so good. My favorite is salmon balls. Same as patties but roll them into balls. Serve with teriyaki sauce, or Alfredo, or tarter. I use dried mash potato flakes, egg, onion and celery. Also, roll the outside in dried mashed potato flakes for extra crispy.
I love watching you prepare food to be self reliant. Why not mix the salt and sugar together then sprinkle it using just one container. That way there's no guessing on even distribution. Just a thought.
This is the best smoked and canned one I have seen. I really like that you did both fillets and chunks. It is that time of the year, so far we've got jams, jellies, pickles, mustard pickles, salsa, and sauce done. Now it is on to tuna, with salmon to follow. Been one of the best years of harvests that I have seen in the PNW.
I remember your first videos of moving to Alaska, and it's been 4 years already! Makes you think of the time passing, I used to watch your videos 4 years ago in university as a break from studying because they used to calm me. Now I am watching them but I work a job and watch them during break times. Keep up the good work, your videos have been superb quality since the early days :)
Thanks for mentioning the worms / parasites. I remember years ago Bette Midler getting worms from sushi. Put me off raw fish entirely. On the other hand - as usual when I watch your videos, I somehow end up starving!! Happy Fall to you both 🍁🍂
Looks like you guys are ready to upgrade to a smoke house, your videos are heartwarming and inspiring, thank you so much for sharing, with love Helga ❤️....
Thank you for taking the time to show us your approach to canning salmon using the pressure cooker. Watching all of your videos, I’ve wondered how it all works. You guys did an excellent job explaining the process. I feel like I might even give it a try someday! I’m definitely building a veggie garden thanks to you both. Much love to the best couple on UA-cam!!
im from Philippines and yet im so proud and inspired by both of you. you always show how to preserve salmon, eggs and so on i really get an idea. thank you for sharing this kind of technique. ill keep watching
Awesome video. Don't you have to worry about bears when you left the jars outside over night? You guys are so much fun to watch and see how well you work together.
just curious, since I am assuming it gets pretty cold at night in Alaska - were you not concerned about letting the jars sit outside overnight after coming out of the pressure canners? I thought drastic temperature changes could cause issues with sealing. Your very detailed instructions will be very helpful to new canners out there - I have 25 pounds of ground beef to process tonight, but won't be doing it outside :)
We grew up with a large garden and my mom canned and froze everything. You guys work so hard! I enjoy watching whatever y’all do. Take care and God bless! 😀❤️
When I first told my family that I wanted to move to Alaska and live a simpler life on a homestead my family thought I was crazy. I won’t move for a couple of years, but I’ve been learning and taking notes from your channel and I’ve shown my family that you guys have been living this life that I’m looking for, so I thank you so much for all the informative videos and for giving me courage and hope to keep chasing my dream life 💖 you guys are incredible and I wish you all the absolute best! That salmon made me so hungry 😂
You both are an inspiration! I admire how you work together, and how you have grown since the move to Alaska. You make me feel so energized and you confirm in every episode that NOTHING is impossible!! Much much blessings!
I used to use vinegar in my canner but when it started causing the lids to rust, I stopped using it like that. If I want them to be clear, I will wash the jars before I use them in the dishwasher with some vinegar added. When you go to open a jar of garden goodness, you don't want to have to struggle with a lid that is rusted on...
I believe the white film that can develop on jars is due to the minerals in the water. But good to know about the possibility of rusting bands. Thanks!
I love all of your videos! I get so happy when I see a new post. Stay true to you and each other. Many more beautiful years for you both. Thank you for letting us be a part of your big adventure.
You must feel so good about getting all of that lovely salmon stored - what a feeling!! Me, I'd just be standing there looking at it all the time🤗 A good "how to" video - many thanks! Be happy, stay safe!❤
French Canadian salmon pie mashed potato just 2,fork mashed no liquid 2 jars of salmon 6 pats of butter ,salted herbs ,then make a pie two crusts, ohhh leave the liquid of the salmon dont drain it
the hard work will be worth it this winter!! i have canned veggies my entire life, never any meat.. the salmon looked good enough to eat right out of the smoker!!! thanks for sharing & be safe!!!

Well, that was a lot of salmon! A labour of love. I imagine your home gets stuffed to the brim at the end of harvest time. I love seeing the final results of all your bounty every year. I hope you are not in harms way as those wicked storms pummel Alaska. Be safe!
i’m so glad you go over the canning!! i never get bored with it!!
I swear this channel keeps growing ! 633k !!!I ❤️ the harvest videos..the canning..cooking etc. Such hard workers! Great video as always
Super to see you two again! Man your fishing expedition has turned into Salmon goodness. I wish I could smell the smoked fish.
Wife and I live in a log cabin on a few acres in the PNW. I've gotta show her this channel. One of my all time favorites! Thanks for sharing
I always wondered how the canning process worked. Thanks for demonstrating all the steps to successfully canning the salmon. Really enjoyed the video!
I love how you two work together on all your projects.
Amazing review of safe pressure canning! You two are my favorites! Thank you so much Eric & Arielle!
Thank you for bringing all of your Alaskan adventures to life for me!💙
You two are such workers. I love that you eat what you hunt/catch/ grow. Enjoy your bounty.
My favorite couple! Thank you for sharing! It's hard work, but ohhhh so rewarding!
wow! what an excellent video you two, I am 61 years old & never canned a thing in my life, I think I could can anything now after watching you, I have been watching your channel since you were road tripping moving to Alaska, I live in Australia & I enjoy seeing what its like where you live, you both have continued to find ways to improve your channel, well done!
Praying for you as the weather has looked fierce and I have heard that there have been earthquakes, thank you for the lessons on canning, looks really good
Best channel on UA-cam. Please don't ever stop showing all your adventures 🙏
Ariel and Eric, yep, it has been 10 months so I am back watching again... Thanks and God bless.
Have you experimented with actually soaking the wood chunks? We do that to both create more smoke but also cooling the temp.
VEGGIE-LOADED SALMON CAKES
INGREDIENTS:
- 20 oz salmon, cooked or canned salmon (drained)
- 1 small onion, sweet or red, minced
- 2 stalks celery, finely diced
- 1 small red bell pepper, finely diced
- 1 small yellow bell pepper, finely diced
- 3 Tbsp butter, unsalted
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 2 tsp dijon mustard
- 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 Tbsp capers, minced
- 1½ tsp. Old Bay seasoning
- 2 eggs
- ¾ cup Panko breadcrumbs (more as needed)
- ¼ cup parsley, chopped
- salt & pepper, to taste
- oil, for frying
INSTRUCTIONS:
NOTES:
I must admit that rarely am envious, but this pushed me over my edge. You are truly blessed. ❤
Wouldn't that be AWESOME?!?!
I have been watching you since you both headed to Alaska, I has to be the best weekly show I watch on UA-cam, thank you so much for the honest entertainment, take care🙏🙏🙏
Wow you guys canned so much salmon. Way to go!! It looks delicious. Also thanks for all the tips. I’ve learned a lot watching you do the process.
Oh the joys of smoked canned salmon! We like to take some, mix it in cream cheese and mayo, and then eat it on crackers. yumm!
Sounds great!
Blueberry and mushroom paradise! Your videos are always so interesting, informative and entertaining. The fall colors were gorgeous!
Definitely the earliest I’ve been here
Same, thanks to breastfeeding the baby in the middle of the night
Same
Awesome canning. I love salmon Pattie’s, mix, onion, and egg with salmon, oh salt and pepper. Delicious.
Love you guys!
Happy Fall to you both 🍁🍂
Cheers to life in Alaska. Loved this video. The rooster sounds great and always a part of your videos. Love pictures of Bo and Bandit.
Love your videos! Hi from Trinidad 🇹🇹
im from Philippines and yet im so proud and inspired by both of you. you always show how to preserve salmon, eggs and so on i really get an idea. thank you for sharing this kind of technique. ill keep watching
You made that look so easy, and I know it was not. Great video.
You two are so awesome. Thank vou for sharing you wealth of knowledge! Brings back great memory's of mom and dad canning tuna.
Awesome video. Don't you have to worry about bears when you left the jars outside over night? You guys are so much fun to watch and see how well you work together.
I was wondering that, too!!! 🤔
Love all the disclaimers! Great video as usual thanks for sharing! Salmon looks fantastic!
just curious, since I am assuming it gets pretty cold at night in Alaska - were you not concerned about letting the jars sit outside overnight after coming out of the pressure canners?
I want to know how they pay for supplies an so forth
@@TineyGrouse People watching their videos and ads brings in a lot of cash
Thanks!
I usually just wipe the jars with water and a tiny bit of vinegar after I can them to avoid the rusting.
I love all of your videos! I get so happy when I see a new post. Stay true to you and each other. Many more beautiful years for you both. Thank you for letting us be a part of your big adventure.
Is there a reason you don’t mix the salt and sugar together before you put it on the salmon?
Smoked canned salmon, that sounds like a great idea . Yum yum yum nice old school smoker, that salmon looks perfect
Can the lids be reused?
You must feel so good about getting all of that lovely salmon stored - what a feeling!! Me, I'd just be standing there looking at it all the time🤗 A good "how to" video - many thanks! Be happy, stay safe!❤
French Canadian salmon pie mashed potato just 2,fork mashed no liquid 2 jars of salmon 6 pats of butter ,salted herbs ,then make a pie two crusts, ohhh leave the liquid of the salmon dont drain it
I would love to see what your pantry looks like now that you have been filling it up for winter!
YOU TWO ARE “ Amazing “ …working together …enjoy your Salmon …🥰
Thank you, for explaining, about canning, can some tomatoes and never really checked my jars, great episode.🤟
Bo knows... Bandit's ready!! What a luscious bounty in all of those jars!
the hard work will be worth it this winter!! i have canned veggies my entire life, never any meat.. the salmon looked good enough to eat right out of the smoker!!! thanks for sharing & be safe!!!
