Understanding ELEX's Melee Combo Meter & System: Mini-Tutorial

  • A quickly cobbled-together video talking about the TREMENDOUSLY important combo meter that, sadly, is very poorly explained in the game. Please share this information with either in-progress reviewers or people who are frustrated with the combat in the game (which will no doubt be quite a few).
    I'll be releasing more focused videos soon, just wanted to get this out ASAP. Sorry for the lisp, just getting over a severe cold.

    I am blown away by the design of the world (one of the best in a very long time) and the depth of even conversations and how they can produce different results. It's the sort of game that is meant to be played and explored for years, which is why they scoffed at any notion of 'stinking DLC.' I swear, you would think that in this day and age of gamers getting fed up with predatory AAA practices that old school, yet incredibly ambitious games like this that are an ocean of depth and content where it counts would get more respect and attention.

      Most people that play games seem to be only interested in multiplayer competitive titles. There are still those of us who get more kicks from exploring a unique universe apart from our own than being on the leaderboard list. I'd rather spend time with PB games like Risen than squealing in delight over getting to 10th place in PUBG. Kind of sad over the years seeing so many single player IPs with amazing stories and worlds fall to the wayside over your average gamer's poor taste.
      I've played most of the PB games over the years but Elex just appeared on my radar recently. Going to pick this up on Steam when I get paid. Capn' Steelbeard never shares his treasure with 4 legged mutts so I have to wait. Arrrhhh matey.

      Indeed. All they know is flashy graphics, instant gratification, season passes and microtransactions and are bewildered when they see people actually appreciate game design and substance over those other aforementioned 'qualities.' Role playing games that require you to think and spend hours with before you can actually feel and earn even some growth are alien to them and beyond their attention span.

      E.R. Garner I've played two hours so far and only in the berserkers camp. They keep asking me what faction I want to join but don't know enough to join any one side yet. I am how ever enjoying the game so far the map looks huge the game has a nice flow to it. Just hope I can keep my mind on it. The sad truth is there as been so many games brought out since September and I have bought almost all and spent more money than I should have done lol.

    Here´s a great title for a video: "How I leanred to love a game I suck at"
    I learned to do that with Dark Souls 2, the first Soluls Title I played. I sucked so bad that I was completely hollow most of the time, which makes it even harder, and some areas i could only finish by dying so often that the monstes one by one stopped respawning. Still I finished it. It took pathetically long but it was still one of the best gaming experiences i had.
    I really hope ELEX can pull this off as well!

    The problem with this system lies in it's endurance. The kombometer won't fill but resets as soon as the player has no enduranc left. This results in waiting out which slows down every fight. It's basically a good idea to make the close combat more tactical. But in this way it's only time consuming because every fight has the same procedure: Evade, make kombo, wait till endurance refill, repeat...

    wow, you immediatly made the game better for me. now i the fighting is fun. pb really should have communicated it better, the frustrating design didn't really lead me to even try out melee, i just went for plasma. now i just continue with my unupgraded base weapon, cuz it's just fun now. thx.

  • @ilanouh

    I started playing the game, and thought I didn't have enough melee damage/stamina to play melee, but that was because I was smashing without waiting. I didn't fully understand the concept. I didn't play a lot just yet, and came into the game wanting to play with bow anyway, but still, this video is pretty awesome.
    PS : Even without knowing this system, I still enjoy the game itself. This game is not a combat game, and I didn't expect it to be. I enjoy it mostly for it's exploration and depth in most aspects. Also, I like being obligated to flee from enemies at first, but I guess that's just my French side

    Chances are you wont see this comment, but just on the off chance that you do:
    That's all well and good when fighting air. But Iv found that I need to keep at the very least, 1/4 of my stamina bar (im actually trying to keep half but dont always succeed) to avoid the inevitable attack that comes from so far, every single enemy in the game after I stop attacking. The one that, if it hits and Im not blocking (and sometimes even if I AM blocking, so thats fun) will remove somewhere between 1/3 and 2/3 of my entire health bar in 1 attack.
    Sooooo.....?
    My current strategy seems to boil down to attack attack, hold block and move to the side to dodge whatever attack is coming, let go of block to let my stamina bar refill quicker, and repeat.
    And heaven forbid I make one wrong move, or get stuck on a tree, or a rock, or a ridge in the ground, or an INVISIBLE ROCK THING because I have found countless of those currently, because I'll take that hit that takes 2/3 of my health anyway, while my attack attack is doing maybe 1/20th or 1/30th of it's health.
    So I have to do this -almost- flawlessly about 20 times in a row basically. I have 1 free chance.
    And heaven also forbid I manage to, while concentrating on the guy in front of me, move far enough backwards to stumble into something else, because that's instant death.
    And these arent "Skull" enemies. These are enemies, that the game at least seems to think, I should be able to take on. I really want to like this game. It does so many things ALMOST well. But I just have so many little issues that just grate at me. The Jetpack doesn't -quite- have enough oomph to it. The guy doesnt move -quite- fast enough while using it. The jump animation doesn't -quite- go high or fast enough to be useful (To the point where I feel like they could of just made that button the Jet Pack button and removed the jump, and I dont think there'd be much of a difference) The dodge roll is -just- too slow and unresponsive. The weapon switching is -just- too slow and unresponsive. The areas are beautiful until I find some invisible rock in the road. Trying to Jet pack away from a fight almost always results in me dying to some colour of spit. HALF THE TIME THE SPIT DOESNT ACTUALLY TOUCH ME. But I die to it anyway.
    If you want to make a souls game, make a souls game. I souls game is punishingly hard and precise, but only the worst enemies in a souls game are of the -I will kill you in 2 hits, you will kill me in 30- persuasion. Usually its about 3 or 4 hits for me, and maybe AT MOST 10 for a mook that isnt a boss / mini boss. But every enemy in this game except the giant frogs seem to fall into that category so far.
    1 Spit. 2 Spit. Red Spit. Blue Spit ~
    Green Spit. Troll Rock. Wait what ~
    The fuck.

    Thanks man. I was really frustrated when I just couldn't swing dat axe and not knowing why. I noticed this stamina bar only after an hour of gameplay. I mean, yeah no tutorial is quite common for Gothic series. Back in the days of my first Gothic run (like what? 10 years ago?) I spent the whole evening trying to pick the damn stick before a friend of mine told me, I should press both action key and up arrow))) But knowadays it is so uncommon. No wonder people get frustrated and just give up on it.

    Thank you for the video and clarifying a few areas of the combat mechanics. Yes, it is somewhat common sense and intuitive to a degree, but it's nice to see that my assumptions were for the most part correct. ;)
    And please do continue to make your guide/review videos for ELEX! It IS an amazing game what a ton of RPG goodness to offer those that will give it a chance and accept the game for what is IS and not as much perhaps what they thought it would be or what they wanted it to be. Accept it for what it is and enjoy the hell out of a new, exciting and challenging RPG world!

    I gave in and bought this game and I love it early in the game though it's tough to pull these combos off I don't know why maybe stamina consumption but also just because you can do the combo doesn't mean you should I've been hit during it so you have to choose good timing

    If someone after this movie still have problem with fighting should try with sword its easier to "feel" the system.
    One-handed Broadsword for 450 Elexit (low requirements - 17 Strength and Constitution)
    And most important am not sure if it was on this clips is there is no STATS that increase STAMINA you can only do that by going to Survival Trainer and learn Stamina talent.

    Elex is a very good game, however I think the combat and movement controls need polishing. Like, changing direction takes so much time and generally there is no instant feedback when you press an input. If they solve this (which is something viable, it's not changing the mechanics) the game could really be in a better spot.
    I loved Gothic 2, I even think the combat is better in Gothic 2 than elex, but it's just that the response time and smoothness in Gothic 2 was much better.

    • @warmlycalculated390
      @warmlycalculated390  6 років тому

      Agreed 100% about the movement problems. Not happy about that, though you do get used to it. However, I find the combat to be... super dope? The volume of animation sets and their complex timings and interplay are very impressive to me.

    • @marcg11
      @marcg11 6 років тому +5

      It is impressive, but I don't know why they keep making the same combat mistakes in every game. I'm not talking about the animations (I don't care about the animations really), I'm talking about how poor and clumsy is everything. The mechanics in theory are very good, having the click at the right time when you hit, the stamina, jet pack. But the game could just be amazing if the combat would had been, not even good, but normal-ish, because not it's bad, any gamer can just grab the controller and they'll tell you somethins is odd. Just compare the response of the controls in Dark souls 3 and Elex. In dark souls you can predict what the character is going to do when you hit a key, the response is fast. In elex there's something odd about it, it's random. I get frustated sometimes because i play on keyboard and by just moving by WASD the characters rolls randomly. It's these things that make it look poorly polished.
      I just wish they improve this aspect in the game, in an update or at least realise that the game can be so good if these little things are better.

    Hey Dark, BloodSacrificeShaman once again (yeah, I still lurk the forums). Man, the Piranha's have blown me away here. I was cautiously optimistic, but in the 5 - 6 hours I've so far played.. my expectations have been vastly surpassed. One thing that has really surprised me is the dialogue and writing, some of the best PB has done yet. I thought Risen 3 was a big step up over the second, but still ultimately an average game for their standards. This seems to be, easily, their finest work since Risen 1, if not Gothic 2 itself. One big flaw I have with the combat: when an enemy NPC does a strong attack and glides toward you. That can be so infuriating, especially if they do it immediately after dialogue (which has unfairly one-shotted me a few times). Hopefully that gets patched. Otherwise, yeah, I'm having a blast. PB has sucked me in again!

    • @warmlycalculated390
      @warmlycalculated390  6 років тому +1

      When you're locked on, you seem to "home in" to your opponent; they follow the same rules you do, so I don't mind it. What I don't like is the way you can groundlock some NPCs when you drain their stamina, but your stamina refills more quickly. Other than that, I've been astonished by this combat system... there's 4 semi-different animation sets simply for 1-handed combat alone (maces, axes, swords and 1h+shields), and the special attacks are all 100% different. And then there's 2-handeds, which I haven't even tried yet. And many different magickx. And archery. And guns. And rocket launchers. And lazer weapons.
      I just can't believe it. Everything is so intricate and polished.

    • @blakeprocter5818
      @blakeprocter5818 6 років тому

      I'm excited to dig back into it brah. I haven't even seen magic or guns yet, or any of the other regions outside of Edan. I was impressed with how they handled the co-existence of sci-fi and fantasy magic in the same world via the Elex. I was expecting a really lame, forced explanation but no, it's great. The world design is awesome as well. I was noting the ballistae placed around Goliat and how they're all in logical positions, covering gateways and areas that could be prone to siege towers etc. A lot of thought has gone into everything. Also, how I spent a good 20 or so minutes just exploring all of the ruined hotel at the top of Goliat, with cool things hidden everywhere, some of which require clever use of the jet pack to get. Exploration really pays off again, which was definitely one of PB's greatest assets prior.

  • @modernmeat23
    @modernmeat23 6 років тому

    the combo thing is really neat and i even like it but that stamina bar is such a huge annoyance, whenever you get 3 of those scavenger looking things on you or 3 rotboars on you everything becomes really clumsy. dodge 2 times, woop, stamina bar gone, try to strafe to the left or right of the boar, woop, his hit box covers more than you can cover without actual dodging. if there s a way to get rid of that stamina thing, i m more than sure that the combat against more enemies would become more enjoying

    • @warmlycalculated390

    The early reviews are bad because the game is hard? That's a pretty weak excuse. Why are games like Dark Souls or even the Witcher 3 rated so highly? They have huge learning curves to master. This is just a badly outdated combat system that really holds Piranha Bytes back from being a top tier developer. It's a shame too because they can craft some incredible worlds, but they really need to update their mechanics.

I always wondered why people hate the Gothic combat system.... it's genious and allows some intense fights. Is it the same deal with this game and most people just don't get it? I really struggle weather or not I should pay full price for this game.

      The combat is... nuts. It's sort of a mash-up of every PB combat system (not Risen 2) and then crossed with stamina management (although there doesn't seem to be Stamina potions/consumables). The variety is on another plane of existence; 1-handed alone has four distinct groups of animations that change whether you're using a mace, sword, axe or 1-h+shield. Then there are 2-handed weapons which seem to also change animations based on the type you're using. Then there's shotguns and rifles and machine guns. Then there's rocket launchers and grenade launchers. Then there's like 40 different types of magic depending on faction allegiance. Then there's phasers and blaster rifles. Then there's grenades and mines and... there's even more. And what's absolutely mind bogglingly astonishing is that it more or less works and is more or less balanced pretty well.
      Melee has a few issues though, mostly with imprecise hitboxes and a few other things.
      If you loved NotR... there is no reason on this planet you shouldn't check out ELEX. I can't say yet, because I haven't come even close to beating it, but dude, this could actually beat the unbeatable. This is a game bigger than Gothic 3, with the economy and design of NotR with the visuals just barely below an AAA game. There is no way this won't be my GOTY and it's a strong contender for my GOAT, frankly.
      The reviews are absolutely bonkers. This is what happens when you hand Gothic 2 to someone raised on Gears of War; absolute bewilderment. For the first time in years, an open-world game actually has presented me with obstacles to overcome, rather than just a world to explore and a story to enjoy. And surprisingly, ELEX delivers that as well, though it's nowhere close to something like The Witcher 3 in that regard.
      I paid $50 and I feel like I stole the damn thing. There's probably around 500-600 hours of content here in total.
      Anyway, I'll stop fanboying now. :P

    • @Taika_talvi
      @Taika_talvi 6 років тому

      Alright, thx for that summary. Sounds interesting. I just recently tried Witcher 3 and found it pretty boring to be honest. I didn't care for the story because I never played part 1 or 2... I just love my RPGs with a lively world, tons of stuff to explore and of course challenges. I therefore hate it when you just click stuff to death in more or less the same way over and over again.
      Elex's combat looks interesting enough, I just hope they'll fix all the exploitable stuff like the trick with the stamina bar where your opponent can't get back up again.

    I like this game becaus it is difficult. As an Ghothic 2 NOTR player, I demand nothing less than ultra difficulty.
    Furthermore I´m positive surprised that the combat system feals so good. You can´t simply button mash, you have to think carefully for every strike or block you do.
    Also I think that at least on ultra difficulty the monster AI is pretty much well done. Especially the raptors.

      Toy Gains take on all the quests that require you to do stuff in goliet, treading to far ur going to reach enemies you won't be able to defeat. Even after getting basic armor and weapons you are still going to have a hard time but you'll be able to bypass them atleast. Grab a companion asap they really help out for a good while

    • @halsaufschneider1446
      @halsaufschneider1446 6 років тому

      How about you do any quest in Goliet that requires no combat. Get Duras the Detective as soon as possible.
      He wants you to speak to at least one suspect, before he joins you.
      And the moment you have money, get the pick-pocketing skill. Steal the sunglasses from the same guy who thought you that ability, and profit.
      Next to learn is weapon upgrade and +XP for quests. Do all this, or suffer... #FuckElex

      I don't get people saying Elex looks and plays like an 8 year old game like it's a bad thing... weren't there good games 8 years ago?
      EDIT: for the record, I don't even agree that the game looks or feels that old; but even if it were the case, I still wouldn't see the problem. It's a huge, deep and very rewarding game made by a small team and without day-one DLC, season passes or microtransactions, so what if it looks a little dated?

      Tato Tatoo let's see, Hunter Armor in cabin/ruins where you find Gerland the Hunter. Think that's his name. He's part of the murder investigation you get from Duras. Anyway armor is in a chest in building. Hunter Pants can be found behind the Ballista in a chest by the seedling farm. There's a wrench type weapon in one of the buildings NW of Goliet. On your map it's cluster of 4 buildings. Pretty sure it's the building with poison clouds, so bring some antitoxin. Exploring in PB games is key and also having theiving skills. Also a nice sword in Sinda's shop you can steal and another one in a cave that's linked to the mature healing herb quest. Though both require like 60 dex and 50 str or something like that. There's also a workers hat or whatever in one of the abandoned berserker fortifications to the east of Goliet. Some high level beasts in the area though but you can just run around them loot shit and jet pack out of there.

      Anyway, I haven't actually played Elex yet (which is one of the reasons I stumbled across your video). I was really let down by Risen 2, and haven't played any other PB game (i.e., Risen 3) since, but I thought it might be time to give them another chance. Which, from what I've heard so far, might just be the case.

    The location of the combo and stamina meter dont make sense. Whyle trying to fight you struggle keeping an eye in the enemy aswell as ballancing these meters. If miss even one attack you lose an oppurtunity to dodge cause stam decreases a lot from hitting and dodgin also costs stamina. You dont have the oppurtinity to increase your damage via a combo because you just missed. You missed because the game is a mess movement wise and your character doesnt actually do everything the way you want him to. Then you dodge to make sure the enemy doesnt hit you and kill you in two or three shots. Bamm you are out of stamina. Wich you dont know because the stam bar is up in the left corner in the screen. Place these bars in the middle of the screen and you can actually watch your enemy aswell as balance these bars. Anyway the game doesnt explain any of this well enough for a new player to actually understand all of this.
    Same problem with the mini games like hacking and lockpicking. I turned off tutorials because these slow down your combat all time. When trying to unlock a lock i broke all my lockpicks. Because i didnt understand the system after consulting youtube i realized the mechanics of them and they became easy. Anyway if you do have tutorials on your explanation of these mechanics are terrible. Like two or three lines long of explanation.
    This is without including bugs. This game is not polished well and frankle kinda a mess. Despite this the game is sorta fun.
    Overal it is not a good game.

    stop pretending the combat is special in a good way, they needed more polish on the combat the input delay is something out of a 2006. what you show is one on one combat the moment more than one enemy zeros in on you all your timed presses go to shit since you are too sluggish and your attacks are so weak.

      @MidheimOfficial 6 років тому +5

      grenades suck on harder difficulties since they barely do any damage. This guy is right, the fighting system works well in 1v1 comabt, but as soon as you fight multiple enemys you will get problems, espacially against monsters^^

    • @HyrakX
      @HyrakX 6 років тому +8

      atleast its a bit more realistic then jumping from left to right over 20 meters to hit 5 enemys in a row and insta kill them with backstabs or 10 hits in 1 second.
      it seems like everyone is expecting a godlike character after 2 hours of gaming.

      i aggree, i like the struggle and that you have to think about which fights to pick and which to avoid, but sadly the combat often feels unfairly clunky. I mean there are meany problems with hit-registrations, especially when fighting on uneven ground.^^
