    Most of the reviews failed to grasp that you are supposed to actually role play and feel your mortality for hours on end. The world is supposed to feel incredibly dangerous, it is supposed to be literally dark and ominous at night and you are supposed to be a scrub who has lost his power and must set out to prove yourself. And when you understand and embrace this... all of the sudden the game absolutely blooms after you finally join a faction and start getting better gear and abilities. It is rewarding in ways that you just don't see anymore, and with the staggering amount of options and things to discover in the massive world, it gives you years of replayability with no DLC or season pass bullshit required. Imagine that!

      I really enjoyed that aspect in Pirahna Bytes' previous titles such as Gothic and Risen, but I think it feels a little exaggerated in Elex.

    I've actually found clever use of the jetpack in combat is a great help, as it allows you to evade attacks while conserving stamina for the combos. What is really useful is against an enemy like the Biter or Critter, that does charge attacks that can be hard to follow up with on time after a dodge, is to leap into the air and fly backwards with the jetpack. Essentially following the enemy's charge from above and dropping down behind them for a wallop, stamina fully intact.

    I like the hammer animations when you do the overhead slam like 3 times. It looks like you are just violently beating the shit out of something. But overall, I think the attack animations look quite neat in general.

    Thanks a lot for this mate, was pretty put off by the combat, thankfully unlike most people I realised it was probably an issue with how I was playing, few google searches later and here I am.
    Enjoying the game a whole lot more thanks to you.

    I think that you don’t have to finish all the combo for the best use of the special attack.
    The special attack chains in the combo like other attack you just need the right timing.
    The combo bar is there for don’t spam the attack, so, if you spam it you will use all the stamina and don’t get the special.

    great guide ! for people who are having hard time playing this game, here are some tips, good eater skill is one of the best perks that can make food have better healing capabilities, animal trophy perks is a good perks for getting more loot from your enemy hence more money to be obtained, and it is a good idea to avoid fight in the beginning, running is the best choice for you to finish some quest. in the latter level you can get your revenge with better equipment, im level 29 cleric and this game is very addicting. oh year, do not sell the small elex drink, try to get chemistry perk to make elex drink from it and obtain free attribute points :)

    I would recommend everyone to get dexterity and int up asap so you can use overpowered plasma/laser blasters from clerics ( also you can get rare one from one of the albs converters) . Using melee combat is extremely hard and you can rarely take more than 2 opponents in a fight , with blaster tho you can cheese dozens of enemies if you are good enough .

    Great vid! I'm pretty sure this is the stuff you're supposed to learn by practice (i.e., playing the game) so that your actual skill/knowledge progression (opposed to Jax's) becomes part of the game mechanic.
    I remember switching weapon types for the first time and getting excited about the different special attacks. Then, like what was covered in this vid, I had to test out what worked best for me. I've been using the 2-handed axe now though, and I miss the mace's special haha it's such a satisfying bash.

    I kinda do have problem with the combat. Because you have to pay attention to the combo bar, stamina bar which on top of the screen and ofc pay attention to your enemy. Your eyes have too look in 3 different things and you have to time your attacks correctly. I am having fun with this combat, but I think this could be improved.

    • @MadBrainBox

    • @warmlycalculated390

      Yep, I agree. Stamina, combo bar and the enemy/s and their attacks, basically force you to watch all three things simultaneously. Wish the hud could be moved around by the player...

      Possibly. But I will be honest, once you memorize the animations there's no need for the combo bar; I don't really even look at it anymore except out of the corner of my eye. Would be nice if they had that orange "swing" like they did in TW1 on Hard.

    I want to say something about the reviews: Not all are bad! In Germany we have this Gaming Magazine which exists since 1997 and is since 1998 my go to source for very accurate and reasonable reviews.
    They actually gave ELEX 85%! "With great quests and an even greater world, ELEX becomes the best Piranha-Bytes-Game since Gothic 2, but inherits its deficiencies." They also gave the game a special award for "Scale" and a gold award for "Recommendation of the editor".

    I haven't even used a two-handed weapon yet and I'm 20 hours in lol. Too busy using a cool energy sword I found.

  • @andrewstencel
    @andrewstencel 7 років тому

    I'm 22 hours in the game, and my biggest frustration is not even the combat, but character movement itself, like sliding off edges when landing from a jump or jetpack use, the heaviness when turning on a different direction with WASD, how you get stuck on random parts of the terrain (having then to jump or climb over, which is annoying during combat), and how sometimes enemies on a slightly higher or lower height level are not hit by melee attacks (like when in a ramp, for example). Aside from that and the awful companion A.I., it's a really good game in general, though I don't think it is as innovative/huge/complex as you say since your first video... Elex is indeed a really solid rpg with an awesome focus on character interaction and branching story, but from Piranha Bytes, only Gothic 1 and 2 "wowed" me, still.

    • @thekdawg6606
      @thekdawg6606 7 років тому +1

      I think the companion AI is that way because a) they don't want you the AI to beat all the combats for you, b) it's really hard to code AI to both be helpful but not too helpful c) AI is just hard to code believably. I agree with you regarding the combat on ledges and stuff. I started dragging enemies out to more open and level areas so I could fight properly. It's not ideal but it works.

    • @andrewstencel
      @andrewstencel 7 років тому

      thekdawg21 A.I. on risen 3 was more responsive... on elex, companions take forever to engage into combat, only after the player takes a few hits

    25 hours in and I'm still only level 8... Then again, I decided to go all intelligence to get attribute, then found out about elex potions.

  • @Rubikant
    @Rubikant 7 років тому +1

    Still a little unclear what you meant about the damage from "missing" the combo, its not clear in the video since you aren't hitting anything. I see no visible indication that you did anything wrong, but you are saying that your Special Attack damage is greatly reduced when you "mess up" somehow? Are you sure about that? My experience seems to indicate its a fixed amount of damage (based on the defense of whatever you are hitting of course).
    When you say "miss" do you mean didn't hit the enemy, or missed the timing? I assumed that as long as the bar didn't drop down (like what happens if you wait too long to press the next hit) that your timing was fine, and that the damage of the Special Attack was fixed and unrelated to anything other than what you need to do to even have access to it in the first place (build up the combo meter).

    • @warmlycalculated390
      @warmlycalculated390  7 років тому

      Hmmm, I'm pretty sure you need to mix the special attack into the combo meter, so you need to activate the special attack before the bar crosses the white line. At least in my experience. Is that you, Taron? What do you think of the game so far? Haven't see you around the forums.

    • @warmlycalculated390
      @warmlycalculated390  7 років тому

      I just tested it; if you don't activate the special attack before the white line is crossed, the damage will be pitiful on the special attack. Gamespot said this was a gamebreaking bug, ugh.

    • @Rubikant
      @Rubikant 7 років тому +1

      Okay I see, so you are saying if I build up meter with a combo, then wait a bit, then use the special attack before the meter depletes too far, the special attack damage will suck. But, if I use the special attack smoothly at the end of a combo with the same timing I would use for a normal attack to extend the combo meter, the damage will be much higher.
      See I thought the complaint about not having enough stamina to properly use the special attack wasn't a problem because you could build up meter, wait for stamina to regen, build it up more, wait for it to regen, use special attack (you have enough time to do this as the stamina regens quickly if you don't deplete the bar entirely). But it sounds like you really DO need to have a lot of stamina to fully utilize the special attack's damage output, so getting that +Stamina Ability may make a huge difference (I've seen no mention of Stamina increasing as you level up though like Health does, it seems rings/amulets and +Stamina ability are only ways to increase it).
      I also was avoiding the special attack and just keeping the meter full thinking that might over the long term of a fight give me more DPS, but you are also saying in this video that the combo bar has no effect on damage of normal attacks at all, just the special attack, right? That seems like a pretty significant downside to using a shield, but I guess it depends on what you are fighting since a shield can pretty much stun-lock an enemy.

    • @Rubikant
      @Rubikant 7 років тому

      Oh and yeah, its me, Taron, I've been around the forums but they are super busy now so not surprised you haven't run into me on there. steamcommunity.com/id/taronmillet/posthistory/
      I'm loving the game so far! :) I have some complaints, sure (lack of ability to see exact stats like HP, don't really care for any of the companion personalities especially compared to awesome ones like Patty, Bones, Venturo, and Jaffar, some things are of course just broken like skills that don't work or have deceptive descriptions), but I'm definitely way more into it than I was Risen 3, probably largely because the difficulty is much better balanced and feels more like Gothic & Risen 1 in that respect, but also the quests and world building are (of course) excellent, which is pretty impressive given the kinda ridiculous premise. The extra-large world so far hasn't bothered me as much as I feared, probably because it is so dense with good content (unlike most games that boast large worlds and end up boring and empty).

    • @yosoy1loco
      @yosoy1loco 3 роки тому

      @@Rubikant Your comments are quite old, but I find your observations interesting and they bring up the same questions I had while watching the video. Since I will start to play Elex in the next few days, I'm interested if you found answers to anything about your questions.
      1) Is damage of normal Attacks increased by the combo meter?
      2) Do special attacks (with a sufficient filled combo meter) that do not immediately follow up the normal combo chain less damage than they should?
      If the answer to both questions, especially the ladder, is "yes", then I understand the hundreds of complaints of people about the difficulty or "awful" combat, even when they are 15 hours in the game. The documentation and the combo meter would simply be misleading, and this poses a big problem, since Damage reduction by armor seems to be a simple subtraction, making the "special attack" the only way in the early game to really do damage. Players would simply don't understand what they are supposed to do, because of misleading UI elements and explanations. Would be a shame.

    Im pretty sure you can parry 2handers but you need a 2hander to do it. I just dont understand the shield bash ability..or is it supposed to be a parry? I will do the bash and it does nothing. Tried timing it but just clips through the enemy.

      @warmlycalculated390  7 років тому

      Hah, wat? It worked fine for me, but I haven't tried it after the new patch. Wonder if they broke something...
      But you can't knock down several monsters. NPCs should fall though. Also, please note, the shield bash is the special attack; the "mini" shield bash you execute the same way you would a perfect parry is, well, just a parry.

    I consider myself a core gamer, atleast in respects to RPGs and all its subgenres and shooters. I played, DA:O, The entire Witcher series, both new Divinity games, Diablo2, all TES games since Oblivion, and all PB games, just to name a few. All of them several times to completion, on the highest difficulty settings. I played a lot of Action fighters, as well as games with slower tactical combat, usually also on the highest difficulty.
    And in my honest opinion: Elex has THE worst combat out of all of them. Ofc I play on Ultra, without auto aiming. Enemies are not hard, they are tedious. From the beginning of the game you can barely really fight anything. And I don't mean that in every area there are enemies that you cant beat, like in past PB games. I mean every enemy in every area is way overpowered killing you in either 1 or 2 hits, while it takes ca 20 hits for them to die. Killing enemies is useless anyway until you get the most important skill in the game by far (Animal Trophies), because unlike in Gothic or Risen, killing things gives so little exp, you might aswell be not fight anything until you 3-hit them. I generally win fights, but it feels more like its through exploiting game mechanics instead of mastering them. You absolutely can kill everything at level 3 or so just through exploits and patience. In Gothic games (I consider the first 2 plus addon among the best RPGs ever) that was never true (except for trolls i guess).
    Combat is "hard" for all the wrong reasons and slow in every bad way. The only fights to win on Ultra that dont feel like i exploit mechanics and AI are won simply by better stats.
    The Rest of the game is great in parts, okay in other parts. But the combat is simply bad and rightfully so fucked up this games ratings.

    Let's not pretend this is in any way or form unique or innovative. Dark Souls had this from the getgo, and pretty much all bigger action RPGs ever since. The difference being, those game did it significantly better ..

    • @warmlycalculated390
      @warmlycalculated390  7 років тому +3

      Irrelevant. Combat isn't the strength of the game, nor should it be for any proper RPG. Show me a game with Dark Souls combat that also has ludicrously complex and detailed quests, multi-faction systems, a huge open simulated world with no load screens and nearly everyone killable, memorable characters and a proper main story?
      I'll wait.
      But yes, Dark Souls combat is much tighter and much more varied, sure.

    There is a reason why dark souls has become synonymous with stamina based combat in arpgs. If you gonna have a stamina based combat, you are basically asking the player to be precise and accurate, if you're not even going to bother having combat with precise and accurate animations and hitbox, then also dont bother having stamina based combat.
    Its amazing seeing you try to make such a trash of a combat system look decent, you took fanboying to a whole new level.
