Centurion Mk 10 vs M60A1 | L52 APDS | Armor Penetration

- Simulation of a Centurion Mk 10 projectile hitting the frontal armor of M60A1
105mm L52A1 APDS (4.6 kg, tungsten alloy core) at 1380 m/s
vs
M60A1 upper hull front armor (109 mm CHA at 65 degrees) [relatively soft armor ~220 BHN, with good ductility]
105mm L7A1 muzzle velocity (for L52) - 1426 m/s. 1380 m/s refers to a distance of approximately 0.6 km - Наука та технологія
I was one of the early generation of US Army Abrams tankers, on the original M1 and later the M1A1. The older M60 types (19Es) who transitioned over to the Abrams always thought very highly of their old tanks, but, yeah, they weren't as impervious as they thought they were. The TTS on the later M60A3s was a better night vision sight than the M1's TIS, but that was mostly Congress forcing the Army to keep the M1's price tag down.
Once again it hits home (no pun intended) just how revolutionary the Abrams was for the US Army.
I doubt many of them thought the hull was impervious. Unless they did not read the manuals.
@@chrisblack6258- it's not about manuals. It's about emotion and pride in your tank that you spent years serving in. A tanker needs that emotional sense of invincibility while being inside a tank. Without that feeling of invincibility, it's impossible to work in a tank. You would just constantly worried about what could harm you.
@@TheBigExclusive interesting perspective. When I was reading the FM 17-12 1978 edition, one thing I felt was that anything will kill me if I don't learn to never trust my armor but my manevers and skills.
"any vehicle or unit that exposes itself on the battlefield will be destroyed unless..."
"about the enemy,... His equipment is good,... Probably nearly as good as ours."
@@TheBigExclusive I mean, there is a reason why most NATO tanks specialized in hull down fighting, because the hull armor is weak. If I remember correctly, both an M1 crew and an M60 crew must finish an engagement (for an M60, each time a round fired from the cannon is considered an engagement) is consifrom turret down position in about 5 seconds or so to be not considered killed during their training.
@@chrisblack6258 the first Abrams had hull armor similar to that of the turret. It was only as a result of continuous improvement of the tower that a large disproportion arose.
the driver had a bad day i think
"I'm not sure the damage was that severe, we should check the witness plate."
"What witness plate?"
You are right, cant say for sure if it was lethal without seeing the witness plate.
That damage seems to be absolutely devastating
Nah, I think it would more accurately penetrate and do literally nothing to the inside of the tank requiring 3 or 4 more shots to each individual crew member /s
@@Wogby You've been playing too much war thunder.
'Tis but a scratch... 'murica, fuck yeah!
@@elongated_musket6353 That was the joke

Meanwhile in warthunder...
"shattered"
British players know what i am talking about.
Great simulation 😊
Watching the setup of the simulation, the projectile shape seemed to me to be so non-optimal against highly sloped armor that I was sure it wouldn't "bite" the armor and ricochet. And at the beginning of the simulation it seemed so... It deformed, started to slide... but went through anyway :-).
The projectile maintains its trajectory better due to erosion. In addition, the sharp-tipped cap is not connected to the core, so it rotates without lifting the tip of the main core.
@@dejmianxyzsimulations4174 could you give us same scenario Vs DM13?
Ah, I thought it was a shearing band similar to some of the earlier Soviet rounds, but it's not connected at all. Very interesting!
The shell basically bruteforced itself in killing the driver on the spot, leaving a massive home in the frontal armor
That do be pretty much how it do be 🤔
Well yes the shell didn't have the password in this scenario
That must be a bad day for the driver, he took some big chunks of metal flying to his head
Probably a slight headache
I'm honestly surprised the glacis managed to deflect as much of the shell as it did. It still wrecked the absolute shit out of that M60, but I was sure it was going to just pop through like it wasn't even there given that the L52A1 can carve through an insane amount of armor.
It in fact cannot, it's 0 LoS is much worse than tungsten carbide APDS but the angle pen is vastly superior.
More people need to see ur stuff, comment 4 algorythm
Thx
Yay. As expected. Tungsten Alloy FTW.
Cool sim😊
"Oops" -The loader, probably
people were right, comment for stats, ty for videos
A shot on gunshield please, since that's where M60A1 can really take a beat
Hi, i have a suggestion, i would like to see the damage an APFSDS petal (the discarding sabot) would do to a light vehicle.
wow the driver looks slightly red now
I wonder how much of these spall will affect rest of the crew and if tank wil be totally ruined
The shrapnel seems to be going downwards, so the driver is definitely red mist, but the turret crew could survive with severely injured legs.
Unless of course the front ammo rack of the M60 is filled in which case R.I.P everyone inside.
@@AlreadyTakenTagit's Centurion shooting M60, not vice versa
EDIT: For context the comment i respond to was edited, and he thought it's patton hitting cent UFP
@@thezig2078 M60 has ammunition racks below the turret ring on the hull floor / turret basket so those could get hit
@@thezig2078Pattons shove Ammo everywhere, including both sides of the driver and the hull floor
Oh my, my prediction is correct.
meanwhile in warthunder British mains:
'Hit 💡+5'
No, L52 on the Vickers Mk3 works as intended.
I love how apds does a "backflip"
I was expecting it to pen but god damn
Damn centurion beast
That's interesting: I wouldn't have expected the penetrator to "flip around" like that and enter base-first.
...but maybe that's a result of sort-of "half deflecting" due to the slope of the armour?
yes, but the penetrator lost most of its energy so it could rotate
Sub optimal situation indeed.
L-7 was an amazing gun back then
So the answer to how softer steel affect the dynamic is less plugging?
the difference is not so serious as to be definitely noticeable when compared to another similar case that I performed. An identical simulation would have to be repeated with harder armor
What if they'd made it out of hha like 400 brh?
i think the driver is hurt
yellow driver in war thunder
The driver is unconscious!
Driver might need to visit a dentist after that one.
What software do you use for simulations?
Ansys
if the driver whold have drunk milk that morning he is walking that off no problem
Take notes gaijin. APDS should cause way more spalling than it does in game.
Warthunder: ''Hit''
Such a shame that M60 was meant to have composite armor but canceled
*Driver*
oh he dead

She gone
That isn't going to buff out.

I knew it.
the next survey will be much harder
