Great review on a high-value sub as usual from your channel! One thing of note about sealed vs reflex (ported in this case) is that REL chose a reflex system in their music-focused sub line like the T7x. REL went one step further and chose a passive radiator vs a port which is a 5th order slope and has even more group delay than a port. It made me question a few things. I think the focus was a lighter cone and voice coil which would have a higher resonant frequency and required help from a reflex design. I suppose they found that lighter moving mass made more difference than the spring restoring force and lower group delay of the sealed/acoustic suspension design.
REL takes a different approach to PR subs, personally I just consider them sealed subs as most PR subs are a little sloppy and sound more like large vented subs while REL's PR subs are tight, quick, and extremely detailed.
@@NemoPropaganda I'm a music only guy in a 3800 cuft living room that opens to a hallway and a kitchen. I'm looking for the best pair I can for 1200-1400 dollars. Any ideas?
Hey Nemo, Many vented subs are more than capable of accurate bass, while also producing deep, warm, thick, juicy low end. My subs are no longer in production. I run a pair of Klipsch Synergy Sub 12s.They are fast enough to produce nuanced, tight, clean bass and on paper they go down to 24hz. I have also tested them with a frequency sweep and discovered that they technically didn't stop moving until 5hz. Often, speed and accuracy have a lot to do with proper setup and calibration.. BTW smoothly flared ports do affect performance by reducing port noise, like chuffing!
I'm very familiar with the characteristics of vented & sealed subs, I don't think many people have heard as many as I have. Anyway, You love what you got, that's great. I am famliar with the Synergy sub, I believe it was a WireCutter favorite back in the day. Your vented sub moving at 5hz is because its in free-air well past the port tuning freq, I would recommend you not repeat that experiment as the limiter is the only thing keeping the sub alive at that point.
@@NemoPropaganda It was a 1 time test, tosee what the sub was ultimately capable of. I do stand behind what I said though. Unless we're talking about Rythmik most sealed subs will play tighter and with better transients than their vented coutnerparts.
A few years back you favorably reviewed the SVS SB3000. How do you think the SB3000 stacks up to the PB-1000 Pro? Obviously the PB1000 Pro will reach lower than the SB3000, which is no slouch in that area but in terms of Home Theater use I'd be curious to know what you think. The reason for asking is that I'm looking at both subs and have had extensive conversations with the SVS guys. After I sent them a rough diagram of my open living room with a 5.1.4 system they felt that the SB3000 would be a better choice and that it would be able to push a substantial volume of air into the room. Either sub would be placed in the right corner of the short wall where my AV stand is located. It's the only possible placement which the SVS folks took into account along with air cubic feet. I've had sealed and ported subs and while, sometimes, there are discernable differences, other times not so much. I've heard both subs at friend's homes and while the PB-1000 Pro can shake the walls, the SB3000 seemed to create a "livelier" overall sound. So, again, any light that you can shed would be appreciated.
Hi Lewie, it sounds like you are leaning towards the SB3000, personal taste is a big factor here as both subs are great just different. I don't think you can go wrong either way. The PB1000 Pro will be more effortless in the lower frequencies while the SB3000 trades some of that for a tighter sound that is more tactile. Based on what you've wrote it sounds like you may prefer that slight trade off, so I say go for the SB3000 :)
@@NemoPropaganda Thanks brother. that's an almost 20 year old subwoofer, I would 100% buy the PB 1000 Pro instead. Around the 20 year mark is where capacitors and adhesives start to break down and fail. All vented subwoofers will chuff when pushed past their limits. Chuffing is only a problem when it happens before the subwoofer reaches it's limits. SVS does not have that problem.

For sure PB2000 Pro also. I like both SB and PB ranges but I feel PB sounds more effortless in a theater setting. Nemo - Awesome review, but what else would the audio world expect from you at this point? I consider myself extremely lucky to own, have the space and spousal approval for a bigger ported Rythmik, but thought this review was very helpful for folks looking for subs in this price and size range. At that price (even after the increase), seems like a great value that would meet the needs of a lot of folks. Did you happen to listen to it or test it with the ports plugged? And if so, how did it compare to the sealed version? Also, thanks for the bass tracks mentioned in the video... realized after the review, that you have these and many more on the Nemo discord, but these tracks are freaking awesome and it prompted me to look closer at the Discord recommendations. Thanks for all you do for the basshead community!
Not on this particular model but my experience with plugging the ports on a vented sub is it helps tighten things up a bit at the expense of some low end authroity vented subs are known for but it doesn't make them sound like sealed subs because the cabinet is still very large. Basically to me the difference is small but some may feel differently. Either way its nice for the option to be there as users can experiment and find what they like but generally I've found I like my vented subs to stay vented.
I have several SVS subs and for the money between my PB1000 Pro and my non pro PB1000 at their price points I prefer the non pro model. I really do not need an app though and do not use it. I tried it and thought it was interesting and convenient but don't use it. Wish they would make the non pro with a 12" woofer.
i get what you mean, the app is mostly benificial for mixed use, like if you game, listen to music, and do theater all on the same system and your AVR is more on the basic side I can see the user definable profiles being helpful but aside from that or owning multiple speakers you rotate once your sub is setup you shouldn't really need to make any more changes if its a single use system.
@@NemoPropaganda I just pulled the trigger on the PB1000 Pro. and I dont know if I am wrong but isnt the app also very useful to tame peaks in the frequency response and make the sub woofer play more linear? Also the ability to switch for music and movies are and lower or raise the gain are the things I think I will enjoy the most about the app. I just hope I am not disappointed in the bass response since I have used a Definitive Technology BP2002TL with built 12 inch powered woofers for years.
why didt you not mention, that the subs comes. with port plugs, so it becomes a sealed sub? then it works like, the sealed subs. people like more for their music
because that's not entirely correct. Plugging the ports on a large vented sub will tighten things up a little bit, but just a little bit, it will not make it sound like its sealed counterpart, you still have a cabinet that's 3x the size.

i get what you mean, the app is mostly benificial for mixed use, like if you game, listen to music, and do theater all on the same system and your AVR is more on the basic side I can see the user definable profiles being helpful but aside from that or owning multiple speakers you rotate once your sub is setup you shouldn't really need to make any more changes if its a single use system.
@@krishnataveras8734 I'm not sure, I have not heard that definitive model.
why didt you not mention, that the subs comes. with port plugs, so it becomes a sealed sub? then it works like, the sealed subs. people like more for their music
because that's not entirely correct. Plugging the ports on a large vented sub will tighten things up a little bit, but just a little bit, it will not make it sound like its sealed counterpart, you still have a cabinet that's 3x the size.
@@NemoPropaganda yeah and you need to learn. How to read!! I wrote it clearly, its getting charactics from sealed bass. So its like a sealed.
@@tuemose22 nope, that's not what you said ya idiot. Nice try though. Your original comment is still there and pretty clear. Maybe you should read it again. You literally said "why didt you not mention, that the subs comes. with port plugs, so it becomes a sealed sub? then it works like, the sealed subs. people like more for their music" so maybe think twice before being rude next time huh? Or I can just block you so there won't be a next time, either way the choice is yours. You're a stranger on the internet and hold very little value to me.
If you had to choose between the pb1000 and the sb2000, which one would you take?
If I could only choose between those two personally I'd go for the PB1000 Pro, while the SB2000 Pro is technically better suited for music and should be most peoples logical choice I don't personally feel it's that much of a step up in terms of fidelity and I'd rather have the thicker bottom end of the PB1000 Pro
@@NemoPropaganda thanks for the response. Have you heard a Monolith 10” sub. I was looking to see if you have reviewed one, but I didn’t see a video for it. If you have demoed one, how would you compare the Monolith 10” with the pb1000?
@@JP-pc6to I don't review monoprice products, I feel their subwoofers are a bit too "inspired by" SVS, so might as well just get the real deal. If you're looking for alternatives consider the REL HT1003 MK2.
I agree wats is not the key because I have a klipsch reference 12 inch 300 wats subwofer and boy that subwofer can kick hard on movies and music.
Let’s go!
It ain't a looker but what SVS is? A sub to be hidden for sure
Really? I think its one of the better looking vented 12's.
I use the grill on a sub, unlike one that would cover a tweeter. So as long as it doesn't draw attention I'm good.
It’s good looking like a dodge charger is good looking, but it’s no hellcat more like the base model.
@Nemo Propaganda would you do dual pb1000 pro or dual rythmik lv12m ?
@@coreysenior they're both good but very different, the Rythmik is an SQ sub while the SVS is an SPL sub, I made a whole video about it that should help you decide which one is best for you: ua-cam.com/video/rEz03XkcslI/v-deo.html
