This looks so vapid and modern, it makes me want to go watch “The Nativity Story” with Oscar Isaac like _right now_ 😂 THAT’S a masterpiece telling of this story.
Nowhere. But some commentaries and pastors say that Mary must have been 13, and Joseph much older. It's true that some people in history were married (or betrothed) at that age. But that was rare. Most people in history were first married around 18-20. There's no reason to assume that Mary was very young.
Joseph even pre knowledge to the incarnation had so much integrity that he was going to put her away privly (break up- privately) so to not shame her. GOD let him know what was really going on so he married her with joy. This was no Romeo and Juliet story. Much better than anyone could rewrite.
Joseph didn't know what was going on until the angel appeared to him in the dream and told him that God impregnated her with the Holy Spirit. If Joseph already knew what was going on, there'd be no reason for him to put her away in the first place. He put her away under the assumption that she had sex with someone.
❤ I love Jesus, he’s such a loving God. Joseph was a really good man, literally covering for her when she could have actually gotten a capital punishment for adultery. I wish I was more like him, overall more like Jesus, and us Christians should stride towards righteousness. Christ is amazing, loving and very, very graceful.

I would rather take Oxford English or any foreign language rather than these Chosen accents. Freaking bring it in Finnish but not this. No offence to anyone. The best would be Aramaic or just Hebrew for the authentic impression. Arabic would do, too
@@northstar2621 well Arabic wasn’t around during first century Judea. Aramaic or Hebrew would be accurate. The accents in The Chosen are weird for sure, you get Greek accents, Indian Persian, Arabic, modern Israeli (Simon Peter is Israeli) as well as A lot of Americans trying to put on a middle eastern accent XD.
@@northstar2621 i would agree, Biblical Hebrew sounded much closer to Arabic. And parts of the accent would definitely sound closer to Arabic than modern Hebrew which loses a lot of its Semitic sounds due to Ashkenazi influence on the language. A good example are the Yemenite Jews pronunciation of Hebrew which had little influence from Arabic itself and they preserved it all the way from second temple period. Around Jesus’s time it would sound much like this. Ofra haza is a popular Israeli singer who sing is this specific dialect on her traditional songs
Should we even have any hope for something like this being good in the first place? LOL No, obviously not. At this point, we should be expecting this to be as bad as it could possibly be. That's Netflix though. Other studios, I have a little more faith in. For example, the movie Risen was REALLY well done. I recommend that one.
Yes do a review of it when it comes out❤. I don't really think people want a historically accurate depiction of Mary. Like you said, I think people like the idea of Jesus being someone who teaches us to be loving, but they don't understand that love includes discipline and requires repentance. This is of course just my personal observation, but that's the way I see it.
The mob scene would have never happened in reality, from what I can tell, because the idea of her "adultery" was hidden. It says Joseph was a righteous man and planned to put her away secretly (Matthew 1:19). That tells me that he wanted to avoid her going through court proceedings and receiving a stoning. Perhaps it's a combination of reading too much into things and not enough information, but I don't think that scene would've happened in reality.
Agreed. According to the old testament law, both the woman and man caught in adultery would be executed. With no other man, and no witnesses, Mary could not have been condemned. Besides, the Jews were under Roman law at the time, which I doubt required the death penalty for adultery.
@@sivad1025 many bible movies have this scene but it's a dream sequence, so we will have to see. But I agree it wouldn't have happened. because either Mary told Joseph the day after she a visit from Gabriel (which would have made her less than a day pregnant) or after the 3-month visitation with Elizabeth (she immediately went to Elizabeth in Luke, then comes back).
😂 I loved the ending, "I think it's going to be annoying. " In general, i hate it when people wildly speculate over a trailer - all the moms on FB routinely and collectively Freak Out when they hear one snippet or see one poster they don't like, BUT as usual I think Mike nailed it and probably said just enough and not too much, of speculation.
@MomeGnome I agree, for sure. But he didn't fly off the handle or make wild accusations about what they're "going to put" in the movie, like most people do.
After what they allowed for Cleopatra in the way of a "historical documentary " I have very little faith in Netflix giving a accurate biblical account and betrayal of Mary.
@ Are you defending poor grammar in the first lines of a trailer for a million dollar movie with professional writers and professional editors? By what basis?
Pardon me, but “he/she and I” is technically the proper grammatical formula. You use “I” when you’re the subject of the sentence, and “me” when you are the object. Alternatively, “me and him/her” is also correct, but you would never say “I and your mother are going to the movies.” Because “the movies” is the subject. Similarly, “You are a blessing to your mother and I.” is correct because the grouping “Mother and I” is the subject of the sentence. While the you is the object. Hope this helps clear confusion! God bless.

@@2015BLOXXER I am kind of suprised a live-action version of "Prince of Egypt" isn't in the works. A live-action musical is now on stage. It probably would take spielberg (who produced the movie) to move it forward. If Gladiator 2 does really well, maybe that will also encourage more big-style biblical epics again.
Thanks for this. I share your sentiments. We just can't lose focus of what Jesus expects from us. He is the only way to God. Yes He is love and He loves us, but He expects repentance from sin and acknowledgement of His Lordship over our lives.
Anthony Hopkins played in another biblically inspired film, ‘Noah’, which had Russell Crowe playing Noah and Hopkins as Methuselah. The film was not a great representation of the Noah story.
Remember when Mary's was Jesus' teacher, how she brought down fire from heaven, bread and fish out of thin air, even died for our sins? Girl boss Mary 😊
It reminds me of Journey to Bethlehem. Vaguely biblical with a dash of Disney-esque songwriting and dialogue with a touch of made-up drama. Maybe they'll respect the text enough for it to be enjoyable. Maybe. But it is Netflix soooo
Journey To Bethlehem also portrayed a girl boss Mary, I was so disappointed... Lecrae and for King&Country were in it so I figured they'd stick to scripture but I was wrong. Joseph reminded me of Shaggy in Scooby Doo and this one seems haughty... smh. The focus should be how her and Joseph ultimately laid aside their differences for the sake of Jesus. Jesus was the importance of Mary, not the other way around. Thank you for your review! I missed some of the things you mentioned so thank you for shedding light.
What was kinda funny about Journey to Bethlehem was that (particularly if you just looked at the songs) the arc for Joseph and Mary’s relationship was actually pretty interesting if you looked at them solely as characters. But it wasn’t their story.
I didn't like the opening for Journey to Bethlehem when she was written as too modern. But once the story moved beyond that, I enjoyed the movie. Even bought the soundtrack. Great music. A movie my niece and I could watch together.
Wait... is Netflix conflating Dune and Star Wars? Jessica is really the Baron's daughter. Rey is really Palpatine's daughter or granddaughter? Mary is Herod's daughter? What in the wide wide world of mashups is going on?!!!
We have Never watched The Chosen in our home. We don't want, in our heads, someone else's made-up stories about God's Word mixed in with the Real thing. We feel the same about "Mary".
Some were making the claim a little while ago that the donkey was only for the man to ride. Realistically, that was only the case if the man was purely selfish, and not the least bit pragmatic.
Never thought I’d see Mike Winger doing movie reviews 😂 That being said this is much needed. I have enough of a dispute with the history revisionists without them inserting my God into their propaganda.
I appreciate this assessment. It is a pet peeve of mine when historical-genre books or movies use phrasing and vernacular that wouldn’t have been in use yet at the time/ place of setting. Also, commenting on a portion of the analysis. Mobs: I can think of instances in the Bible when the Jewish people formed a mob and stoned or tried to stone someone. Stephen, woman caught in adultery, Jesus Himself, maybe Paul. …?
Jesus himself didn't hold Mary in as high regard as Catholics and pop culture. Matthew 12:46-50 " 46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” 48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
It reminds of the “modern type” language and dialogue in The Chosen; along with so many added words that production has put into Jesus’ mouth which I find hugely problematic. Plus hypothetical scenarios and read between the line threads and scenes which “may have happened “ … I just cannot get into at all. This too will be a no for me. Thanks for your thoughts Mike. Always Biblically insightful!!
Wow, this is the first video I've ever watched of yours cause I got it recommended after I watched the trailer for Mary. I got saw you are a great speaker and your biblical and historical knowledge is profound brother. God Bless and I really enjoyed the video.
I enjoyed this review. I definitely think there will be a lot of modern things thrust upon the historical accounts, but this is also how many movies treat secular historical events as well. I probably won't be clamoring to watch this or show it to my children. If I did, I would also be pausing throughout the movie to try and correct any inaccuracies, or mad at the end LOL That's why I've never shown my children the Prince of Egypt either. I loved that movie as a kid. Probably wouldn't so much now lol but it had it's place.
Netflix did a movie about Noah's flood and it was awful. It was a sci-fi with "protectors" (metal mechs that took care of life). It seemed that they were to take the role of the god figure. The movie was extremely blasphemous.
Can the movie industry NOT turn a female protagonist into a "girl boss"?!!! I mean, come on! Mary was a humble and obedient young woman. I'm surprised they didn't pick Rachel Zegler for the role.
Even if it isn't a girl boss story, Hollywood always rewrites history to show people to be the way they think they should have been. And, women today love a story about extramarital pregnancy.
@@ericjames7819 Well, I don't even own a TV so I guess you'll need to specify your generalization to "women who watch TV" ... but even then, ratings and "experts" can lie.
@ericjames7819 I really don't think I'm the only woman in the world without a TV, but never ever once in my discussions have women ever expressed this sentiment. I could be mistaken, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if the Ratings Network were pushing a false statistic for people to believe it's reality when in fact it doesn't even register for anyone but foster enmity & judgement.
One thing is absolute about a film like this, it is written filmed and directed by people without faith and so cannot do this story any true justice. I am afraid it is made to do much worse, with the goal of misleading people in an age when they do not read their Bibles and so cannot easily discern truth from the lies.
It seems like the "Mary is a Disney feminist boss babe speaking truth to power" theme is becoming trendy. They just did a movie exactly like this last year called "Journey to Bethlehem."

THAT’S a masterpiece telling of this story.
THANK YOU for correcting the claim often made about Mary's extremely young age! That misunderstanding drives me nuts. 🤪
Where does the Bible say Mary’s age at time of annunciation?
This and the claim that Joseph was some man in his thirties also grinds my gears.
Nowhere. But some commentaries and pastors say that Mary must have been 13, and Joseph much older.
It's true that some people in history were married (or betrothed) at that age. But that was rare. Most people in history were first married around 18-20. There's no reason to assume that Mary was very young.
@@bbgun061 so it’s all speculation. How can you “correct” a speculation with a speculation?
You can point out that something is mere speculation and less likely to be true than false.
Not the only production that is making up extra biblical content , throwing in anachronisms , and asking “ what does your heart tell you?”
@ amen. You must be like him to be able to appreciate this gracious nature. This conversation “stirs up our pure minds” 2 Peter 3:1 by reminding us about the Holy fear of GOD. Thanks Brad
@@robwisdom2424 I’m not a good man by any means at all, I’m not as close to God as I should be, I do a lot of stupid stuff that gets me into trouble. But I do love God more than anything in existence, I would be in the ground without him.
@@Bbrad1 I do relate & I’m refreshed by your honesty. Here is a Word that really blesses me about our SAVIOR.

I think they want to intentionally change what the Bible says to misrepresent our God.
@@MicahMarieDowning yes, they want to create God in their own image.
@@davegink9222 yep. And if they really knew him. Really really knew him. They wouldn’t want to change him.

If they don't have enough dialogue to draw from the Bible, they're just going to make stuff up. And that's troubling to me.
That's pretty much the entirety of the Chosen, isn't it?
The Girl boss aspect to Mary is as much Catholic as much as it is Hollywood. The Catholics are going to love "You're more powerful than words" because it fits their marianism
Ok Greg ;)
No, we catholics speak of Mary and Joseph as humble and Godly and girl boss are self centered quite the opposite
@@BuuleBrian I am not referring to what you think Mary & Joseph thought of themselves. I'm talking about what you think of Mary. Mary is the Girlboss of the Catholic. Second only to the God Head.
You coulda stopped at “Netflix made a movie” and been concerned.
The Chosen really made it common for people to give the Jewish characters middle-eastern accents to set them apart lol
Historically, it was British accents.
@@Jeremiah-h4u True, but even Arabic would give a little more authentic impression imo, just like Hebrew
Risen really surprised me. Very good movie.
Thanks, gonna go watch it this afternoon!!
Mary would hate to have herself represented as “powerful”!!
They will never offend any other religion, it’s always the Christian faith 😢
Just like Jesus said they would. Take heart
I want to see Hollywood make a movie called "Aisha" where Muhammad's 9 year old wife calls him out for not being tolerant towards the Jews and gays
This video is supposed to be a Mike Winger video? And it's only 18:03 minutes? What have you done with the real Mike Winger?
What?🤣👁👄👁
The mob scene would have never happened in reality, from what I can tell, because the idea of her "adultery" was hidden.
Yes. It would have been assumed she had Joseph's child since he was already her husband
It's movies like this that make me weary of watching biblical stories. I appreciate you covering this and comparing it to scripture!
Mike defending biblical accuracy harder than last time 💪
Ok Greg ;)
😂 I loved the ending, "I think it's going to be annoying. " In general, i hate it when people wildly speculate over a trailer - all the moms on FB routinely and collectively Freak Out when they hear one snippet or see one poster they don't like, BUT as usual I think Mike nailed it and probably said just enough and not too much, of speculation.
@MomeGnome I agree, for sure. But he didn't fly off the handle or make wild accusations about what they're "going to put" in the movie, like most people do.
I love the part where she says "I'm the senate" as she stood before Caesar.
After what they allowed for Cleopatra in the way of a "historical documentary " I have very little faith in Netflix giving a accurate biblical account and betrayal of Mary.

I’m so glad the grammar police have arrived. Everyone’s been waiting anxiously for you. Not.
@ Are you defending poor grammar in the first lines of a trailer for a million dollar movie with professional writers and professional editors? By what basis?
Yeah, I think standards have dropped so low, the Grammar Police are very much welcome. Fewer participation trophies and more bullying, please.
We must not abandon grammar to lawlessness and chaos. Book 'em Dano.
God bless.

This matches with Eastern Orthodox teaching on Mary. That her parents had a promise about her.
Yeah I wondered about that. There is also one movie about Ester that uses material from the other Ester book I think.
What’s the supposed promise? I thought they had to refuse the doctrine of original sin to “justify” Jesus’ living without it… despite the NT passage about first and second Adam dashing the argument to pieces…
The promise is from an early source called proto-gospel of James (150 AD). Or so I believe.
@ Any clue what the promise was?
I feel like they were trying to be artistic for a small artsy audience, not thinking about the importance of this story to billions of people
It looks like the beginning of it is going to be heavily influenced by the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James.
@@chrisdoe2659 the trailer makes a lot more sense now after look that up.

I highly agree with how you broke this down. I share your annoyances with drama and modernizing, etc. I also cringe at most "Bible movies".

Excellent comments and feedback, thank you brother in Christ 🙏🏼
Remember when Mary's was Jesus' teacher, how she brought down fire from heaven, bread and fish out of thin air, even died for our sins? Girl boss Mary 😊
The girl boss stuff for Mary in Journey to Bethlehem was my problem with the film.

Mike I love that your talking about this. Keep shining Christ light brother 🙌🙏
Netflix should just stick to making Stranger Things.
Good video Mike. You're not being nit picky, it's healthy to point out the philosophy in the world parading as Christian theology.
Jesus himself didn't hold Mary in as high regard as Catholics and pop culture.
Matthew 12:46-50 " 46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”
48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

Thank you!! I thought i was the only one who was extremely concerned about this.

Netflix has done this so many times. Where they take scriptural truth and deliberately twist the truth in their movies
I enjoyed this review. I definitely think there will be a lot of modern things thrust upon the historical accounts, but this is also how many movies treat secular historical events as well.
I probably won't be clamoring to watch this or show it to my children. If I did, I would also be pausing throughout the movie to try and correct any inaccuracies, or mad at the end LOL

Netflix did a movie about Noah's flood and it was awful. It was a sci-fi with "protectors" (metal mechs that took care of life). It seemed that they were to take the role of the god figure. The movie was extremely blasphemous.
Yup, I saw that movie and it was quite disturbing.

I'm fairly skeptical and worried from the trailer.
Dang, it’ll definitely be a mess when we have a paragraph at most about Mother Mary herself🤨 They really won’t let the woman rest, leave her alone 🗣️
