So much truth in your statements. We just moved to The Villages but in my mind I'm already formulating a plan for our eventual return to Vermont to be with family in our sunset years. Also, the medical system here in central Florida has been a nightmare shit show of not being able to find specialists or when we do they don't accept our health insurance. There's so much to love here but some real obstacles as well.

It's easy to blame the carriers but the root cause is your state and local politicians. Who have been in bed with the industry for generations. Your governor alone is receiving considerably more annually than the ceo both above and below the board from them. That's the real issue.

I was born in Tampa, Florida in 1961, I will be 64 in a couple of months, I have lived just outside of Tampa my entire life, my Wife and I are planning on moving out of Florida withing the next year, taxes, insurance, healthcare, the millage rate and prices for essential goods and services are some of the many reasons to move. Florida has definitely changed, the overcrowding issue is terrible, the county commissioners here have never met a developer they could say NO to. What used to be cow pastures, orange groves and forests have turned into concrete jungles, a lot of the people that are moving to Florida in the past several years to get away from their restrictive blue states are bringing their woke agenda with them, Florida will be the next California and New York in a few years and I want no part of that, My Wife and I are looking forward to peace, tranquility and way less stress in the 2nd chapter of our lives together.

One of the worst things that happened is the takeover of Martin Health by Cleveland Clinic. Charges immediately jumped and the good doctors "jumped" out of Cleveland Clinic also. Also, many of the drivers (and I don't mean New Yorkers) are in the drive angry mode and think they are Nascar drivers on the roads. We'd always thought about retiring to Florida from our lifelong home in Virginia. So glad we didn't. About that time, 4 grandchildren came along from our 2 kids families nearby. We bought an RV instead and have enjoyed many wonderful trips to Florida beach areas over the years. It's becoming obvious that we're no longer welcome there though. The legislature even changed the law to make it near impossible for out of state travelers to book State Park campgrounds. That's ok. It's been fun. Thank goodness we aren't saddled with property there.

I watered the bushes like three times they were in rough shape. They hit new owners with this impact fee for new homes being built very greedy they want all your money you made off your house and stick you with these user fees for new roads and to build schools Florida is getting crowded and over priced.Insurance is ridiculous.

The coming and going of seniors must be very beneficial for realtors. However the increase in the cost of living through real estate cost, property taxes, property insurance, HOA fees "deferred maintenance" and inflation will reduce the number of people coming. The honeymoon for living in Florida is over.

I haven't left, but I've completed the first and most important step - I sold my condo and I'm now renting near the Melbourne area for drastically less than being owned by a home. As long as rents remain manageable, I'll stay, but if not, at least I don't need to find a sucker to buy me out in order to escape. I'm staying light on my feet and watching the action and will decide accordingly. Florida is rapidly becoming an unaffordable wasteland.

It's a mixed bag of nice areas and kind of underdeveloped or slummy areas. The beaches are not that great. I'm treating it for now as a landing spot as I set myself up for retirement. I have two brothers with second homes in Estero and I think I like the west coast a bit better (classier and more to do) than where I am. In 2 years, my expected retirement time, I'll see, but I'm leaning toward going west, somewhere between Bradenton and Punta Gorda.

The baby boomers boom years are over. The last ones are turning 60 soon, but there’s a lot less of them to fill the gaps of older boomers needing to sell due to health, etc. Add in Florida’s ridiculous insurance markets (home and auto) and this isn’t a cheap place to live anymore. Developers are building like crazy on these tiny 6K sq ft lots and those tiny lots don’t come with cheaper costs (taxes, water and sewer, HOA fees). Plus who wants to have a two story, 3000 sq ft plus house 10’ away from them on both sides.

If you move to Florida, expect home insurance to cost $100,000 per year, 2 to 3 times what your mortgage costs you. So plan to buy a house WITHOUT insurance, just do any repairs on your own, out of your own pocket. If you cannot afford to replace a $50,000 roof then don't move to Florida, that happens once every 10 years.

When seniors relocate after retirement they often overlook their future need for available and quality medical care. They may be pretty healthy when they first retire and see their retirement years as an extended vacation somewhere enjoyable that also allows them to stretch their retirement dollars. It’s sounds like Florida’s health care system is a nightmare and that retirees are being priced out of the state by the rising costs of everything. It makes sense that so many Florida seniors are moving elsewhere.

@@brianl7017 It's also seems insulated (and pretty stable) from the housing market insanity you see in other areas of FL like Miami. And, in The Villages you have homes ranging from well under $200K to $1M+ -- something for everyone's budget, even with the Amenity and CDD fees added on.
And NOT being on or near the coast, you're MUCH safer from storms/hurricanes -- NO comparison to storm-vulnerable places like Ft. Meyers, Tampa, St. Petersburg. And ZERO chance of any hurricane storm-surge, either. The Villages has a very serious and effective "excess water mitigation" system so flooding of any kind is very rare -- even after the recent hurricanes passing over The Villages you could hardly tell it happened water-wise (no flooding).
Finally, it's a true -- and HUGE (something like 57 square miles) -- golf-car community with about 100 miles of paths/trails for them. Plus, you can get to just about anything via golf-car (restaurants, stores, VA Clinic, the 100_ pools, 60 (?) golf courses, etc.)...almost never need your car/truck as you never really have to leave The Bubble.
