Torchic, popplio and sprigatito are mine but there's no starter that I dislike. I think all of them deserve equal treatment from game freak because all of them are someone's first pokemon.
Apparently Mari Shimazaki, the lead character designer for Bayonetta (and the person who designed Bayonetta herself) was the one who designed Meowscarada and Quaquaval. Looking at them, it makes much more sense now.
In regards to Chespin, it was the first mammalian grass starter. Bulbasuar was an amphibian, Chikorita was a fruit/dino, and Treeko, Turtwig, and Snivy are all reptiles.
Fun Fact: Cinderace is now (Currently, Sorry Greninja but your moves are used by different Pokemon's) the only starter to have 2 signature moves: *Pyro Ball & Court Change*
Fun fact about Emboar is that until Volcanion, it was the only fire type Pokémon that could learn a water type move that dealt damage, (not rain dance, withdrawl, etc.) by being able to learn Scald via TM
Plus Emboar is the only starter to learn moves of all starter types (not counting Hidden Power or Tera Blast). With its STABs, Grass Knot and Scald. Wild Charge/Thunder Punch can be added since Pikachu was a starter as well.
another fact about Piplup is that from the DP to XY anime, Piplup had black eyes, but in journeys Piplup had blue eyes to represent the Ken Sugimori artwork more
I will also point out that with Inteleon despite having "chameleon" in it's name, a lot of Inteleons animal design comes from the basilisk, lizards famous for being able to run across water and similarly have thin bodies and limbs but with large feet and a long tail. So for those who didn't quite get why Inteleon is as thin as he is, that's why, plus a lizard evolving into a different species of lizard makes sense (a chameleon turning into a basilisk)
Honestly I would have preferred Squirtle’s final form to be a mature looking Wartortle as it was intended. It seems more interesting than just a turtle with cannons. Blastoise could have been its own Pokémon like before but I think it’s a reasonable final form as it resembles both. And can see why many love Blastoise.
Gamefreak planned 300 Pokémon for the Kanto dex but even with the improved cartridges that Nintendo provided they can only keep 150 so it’s only natural if you have 2 water tortoise lines that you combine them together
They could've had a wise and quiet turtle, a brash and loud dragon, and a mystical and mysterious jungle frog. Now all we have are the two loud obnoxious pokemon stomping up a storm and venusaur is there in the corner trying to sleep
I know that the Pokédex explicitly says that Qwaxly came from another region, but I feel like that must be true for a lot of them, since they can’t be caught in the wild in their native regions. Only given to you at the beginning of the game
@@doomthesenpai Who said he didn't travel in Kanto? It was just a way to make each game unique since there was not different legendary pokemons for Red, Blue and green.
One awesome little detail that I love about Meowscarada is the potential reasoning why it probably has Protean as a hidden ability. You see, Meowscarada is indeed a stage magician but it also has a bit of a Jester theme. The Jester is usually a figure that represents the Fool arcana in the 78 Tarot Card deck. "The Fool" represents "new beginnings" but is also is described as an individual who doesn't know what to expect, fairly inexperienced, having beginners luck, and has very good improvisation. Basically, Meowscarada is the Joker card of pokémon, which I find super fun and creative (most persona fans probably see the correlation). But Meowscarada may not just be the fool arcana, but "The Magician" arcana as well, seeing as it is its title. The Magician Arcana is also a Tarot card that states "The message is to tap into one's full potential rather than holding back, especially when there is a need to transform something." I feel of the 3 protean starters, Meowscarada has the most creative take to justify an ability for a starter that I've ever seen.
Also the mask aspect of the design can also be an homage to the Italian stock comedy Commedia dell'arte Arlecchino know for his tricky and acrobatics to name an few
I always jokingly say that normal Meowscarada don’t have ‘magic powers’ and perform their attacks using practical means. Protean Meowscarada however actually has the magic powers. Which, ah. Another interesting fact about Grookey is that Goh’s took the longest out of any pokemon owned by a main character between capture and first move at a whopping 39 episodes (JN059-098). In comparison, Misty’s Togepi used her first move 35 episodes after she hatched (Between EP050 and 086, not counting “Holiday Hy-Jynx”, “Snow Way Out,” and “Princess vs. Princess”, all episodes scheduled to air before Togepi hatched but aired afterwards because of Porygon)
I got a Chespin line fact: According to Quiladin’s Y/Alpha Saphire dex entry: “They are very kind and won't start fights.” Which makes it one of the only starters that is canonically wholesome and pure. Also, Chesnaught’s shiny kind of looks like a tank.

Wooper is not an axolotl but a baby salamander, as we can tell from their “cheek feelers” aka gills going away when it evolves into quagsire. Axolotls themselves are a kind of salamander that experiences neoteny which is a condition that causes adults to grow but only partially mature, this can actually happen to most animals and even humans.
This was even confirmed to be true when scientists managed to trigger an adult axlotl to finish it's development cycle and turn into a full-fledged salamander by feeding it thyroxine, a thyroid hormone produced by humans that's also a hormone that triggers "puberty" in salamanders.

U r my inspiration, Boi, u da best
I always thought that the final evolution of chespin looked a lot like Frieza's third form and wondered if it was a tribute to it or something. It's alarmingly similar
Nascar is a sport? Idk man you just get in a car and drive left. I'd be convinced if there was something like ramps and flaming hoops or something similar
I was always confused by how late totodile evolves and how quick it becomes Feraligator.
2:07 it had a single prevolution that looks like a small blastoise with a bubble
UA-cam just sent me the notification for this today. Amazing job, subscription thing
A fun fact about Chespin is that he’s my buddy
love these type of videos
6:18 I see what you’re doing with those names. I’m not letting you get away with that!
Actually Cinderace also has two signature moves like Greninja in Pyro Ball and Court Change.
You forgot to mention Oshawott's early fan nickname, DerpDerp.
Fun fact: serperior actually has hands. It just keeps them behind it's back at all times
Nice to see a little cameo from Harry Kane!
Pokémon and Game Freak are so thorough in their Pokemon lore/designs
You say that the term "shiny" wasn't official but I had the official pokemon platinum guide book and it uses the term "shiny" to describe an off colored pokemon.
Wooper is a baby salamander, not a axolotl. The "feelers" are gills which all juvenile salamanders have, axolotls are just one of the few species that never loses them
Expected nothing from Chespin and somehow got worse than that, as usual 🤣
Well this ending aged like fine wine. Little did he/we know there was indeed a new Legends game just on the horizon.
Another fun fact: Quaquaval is the only unique typing in the Starters in Scarlet and violet. Meowscarada shares Brutal bonnets and Skeledirge shares Ceruledge
What about Aqua Breed Tauros?
@@sheriffpumpkin4104 That is true. I forgot tauros came in different breeds now
1:40 Too bad they haven't fixed all the other crappy shinies from eariler generations, though it still continues to current gen 9
