I recently discovered Nile. Immediately bought a 7-string guitar and tuned it to drop A, just to play Lashed to the slave stick. I have no idea how they can be so good, yet so many people have never heard of them.
Yes, a Nile ranking and review. One of my all time favorites in death metal. I love how their lyrics deal with ancient Egyptian mythology and history and they even incorporate Middle Eastern styles of music in their already amazing style of technical/brutal death metal. Aside from one album (due the production, the musicianship is amazing), I think all their albums are great and I'm looking forward to their new album. Here would be my rating of each album: Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka: 3.75/5 Black Seeds of Vengeance: 4/5 In Their Darkened Shrines: 4.5/5 Annihilation of the Wicked: 5/5 Ithyphallic: 4.75/5 Those Whom the Gods Detest: 4.5/5 At the Gate of Sethu: 2/5 What Should Not Be Unearthed: 4/5 Vile Nilotic Rites: 4.25/5
One of my all time favourite death metal bands, so here’s my ranking: 1. In Their Darkened Shrines (5/5) 2. Annihilation of the Wicked (4.5/5) 3. Those Whom the Gods Detest (4.5/5) 4. Black Seeds of Vengeance (4/5) 5. Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka (4/5) 6. Vile Nilotic Rites (4/5) 7. What Should Not Be Unearthed (3.5/5) 8. Ithyphallic (3/5) 9. At the Gate of Sethu (2.5/5)
Those Whom is their magnum opus imo. I think their songwriting chops peaked there. They are my favorite dm band in general though and i can respect all kinds of opinions on them as long as it is recognized that they are a pretty amazing and unique band. i often get the feeling that a lot of the dislike they garner from dm fans is just caused by them not being a late 80s/early 90s band and having folk influences.
I remember back in 2003, I had bought some random CD’s, not really knowing what any of them was and one of those CD’s were In Their Darkened Shrines. I was absolutely blown away by the atmosphere. I was laying in total darkness with headphones on and was taken on a journey. Just remember how big of an impact that album had on me. 🐍
Well, in my personal Nile's discography, the top spots are taken by "darkened shrines" and "those whom the gods...", with the top spot shifting. 3rd place "annihilation..."
Annihilation was my introduction to the band and I think is still my favourite. Followed closely by For those whome the gods detest and in their darkened shrines. Vile nilotic rites was very reminiscent of annihilation in a number of ways and is an absolute banger. Glad you immersed yourself in their discography.
Can’t wait to do the Nile Discog run very soon. They have a very unique take on Technical Death Metal with the added Egyptian influence. Annihilation of the wicked is one of my favorite death metal albums.
they have dial down a lots of the egyptian influences after annihilation of the wicked !That what set them apart from the pack .I hope they it bring back on the new album .They have a new album coming out soon we will see !
Saw them on the Amongst the Catacombs album tour in '98...In Their Darkened Shrines is still my overall fav...Tony Laureano displays perhaps one of the best drum-fill outings on record...666%BEAST...but the 1st 3 or 4 are still the best...very unique in '98 and certainy helped bring extreme Death Metal back to the forefront(and then some) along with Cryptopsy and Dying Fetus, etc.), after several years of a Black Metal surge, not to mention many DM bands changing and weakening significantly from '93 on...still look forward to what they will put out...haven't been as excited with the past 3, but still a powerhouse, especially Karl and George 🤘
Nile is one of those bands that as time goes on. You really appreciate them and realize how f'king good they are. Nile really grows on you like a cactus blossoming from the desert sands
Over the last couple of years, Nile has become one of my favorite bands ever. Every single album (to me) is good to fantastic. They don’t miss. With Annihilation of the Wicked being my favorite. And excited for their next record. I also can’t wait to see them live on their next tour.
Just wanted to flag as it wasn’t mentioned - the opening of the Rameses Bringer of War is heavily, if not entirely, inspired by Holst’s Planets suite, “Mars” in particular, naturally
FUCK YEA!!!! My fav band of all times I remember the first Nile review of yours and I very much hoped that you would find time to check out the rest. So glad you did. My top three would be Annihilation of the Wicked, Those whom the gods detest and Ithyphallic. I’d also put what blabla unearthed as their worst. Happy owner of a limited first press of Annihilation of the wicked.
personally its hard for me to pick anything but annihilation as my favorite. Literally every note hits just right for me. Cast down the heretic remains my favorite nile song.
As much as I enjoy their starter albums, I don't think they really hit their stride until "Annihilation of the Wicked." Bringing in George Kollias was one of the best moves they ever made.
Don't mean to correct.....but this will be their 10th full studio album. And yes....definitely looking forward to it. They're my favorite DM band of all time.
I've felt exactly the same way about WSNBU. I keep going back to it, trying to like it but every time it fails to leave really any kind of impression on me. I'm struggling to even think of a song from it and they are one of my top 5 bands. Somehow though it is still enjoyable to listen too. It's kind of a weird paradoxical record that I can't seem to figure out.
I saw the band live back when I was 17, not long after the release of In Their Darkened Shrines. A friend of mine had tickets but had no one to go with so I joined him. Probably the most brutal band I've ever seen live in concert (sonically, that is...)
I love Nile, my ringtone has been As He Creates (instrumental] for over 10 years. My favorite Nile album is probably Annihilation of The Wicked. George Kollias is my favorite drummer of all time. But I do like the older Nile albums. Black Seeds has a crazy atmosphere just like the other albums
I love me some death metal but I found the majority of this band's songs that I heard being fairly run of the mill, and none of them stuck with me. Kafir is a banger and I liked a couple songs from Annihilation of the Wicked. I even went to see them a couple years ago and they were wilddd, very much enjoyed it... Maybe I'll try them again... so much music to listen to
Them being my all time favorite DM band.....here's my off the cuff ranking, not the most fan popular by any means. Ithyphallic In Their Darkened Shrines At The Gate of Sethu Annihilation of the Wicked Vile Nilotic Rites What Should Not Be Unearthed Those Whom the Gods Detest Amongst the Catacombs Black Seeds of Vengeance
In their darkneed shrines to me is their best album. But my favourite song is annhilation of the wicked. Second favourite album is probably "Among the catacombs"
Im only familiar with Annihilation of the Wicked. Good record, I'll have to check out more. Maybe reviewing every Whitechapel record? They are in the process of recording new material as of this moment.
And could NOT disagree with you more on Sethu.....in the top three records for me by these guys. They went full on borderline daring and experimental with this release. The production, the songwriting, the atmospherics...this it's ridiculous, but this is coming from a guy who's listened to it countless times.
This video made me very happy. I think Nile is one of the best death metal bands to ever do it, and they have so many great albums. Every time I go back and listen to them, I get more impressed. "Ithyphallic" is maybe my favorite of their records, because I absolutely love their doomy side, which they really lean into on it. Plus, that outro solo to "Even the Gods Must Die" is just *chef's kiss* 🔥
My favorite albums are: 1. Annihilation of the Wicked 2. Black seeds of vengeance 3. Ithyphallic 4. In their darkened shrines 5. Amongst the catacombs of nephren-ka Have to listen the albums after Ithyphallic more often
Nile has made incredible albums and yeah, there are some flaws. But Ithyphallic (my favorite), Annihilation of the Wicked, and In their darkened shrines have so many catchy riffs, it's not just wanky guitar work, it's tech death that makes me go into a whole new world
In my opinion Vile Nilotic Rites was a true return to prime form since Annihilation. The interceding albums were never great. Apart from some banger tracks, I felt the dissonant, thrashy sound was taking over and I didn’t really care for that (let alone the sub-par production). Dallas’ departure, and Kingsland’s arrival seem to have allowed for the return of melody and harmonics; intricately composed death metal, really. Dallas’ own band (Narcotic Wasteland), which is very much about the dissonant, thrasy death metal sound, is actually pretty great, so it appears to me that at least musically the split makes sense for all involved. The two new tracks sound great, and I am very excited to hear the new record.
I like your old stuff better than your new stuff happens alot with the bands I love but they're exceptions like Necrot or Ulcerate for example , in my humble antipodean opinion . Nille brought itr so many times
Awful. Zero memorable riffs and hooks, and terrible vocals. Just very disappointing. Doesn't sound like they'll record something as brilliant as the first 4 albums.
Considering seeing them on tour early next year. Six Feet Under is headlining with them, but my current plan is to jam out to Embryonic Autopsy and Psycroptic, get shitfaced at the bar during Six Feet Under, then rage out to Nile.
Hey Robert, just wanna ask. Is there any chance for you to review the new Akhlys album ? One of the strongest black metal albums of the year so far IMO.
Somebody else asked Robert that exact same question in the comments of another recent video. He is not going to review it because the main member behind that project is a neofascist asshole. Sorry to disappoint you, bud. But I could see Metal Trenches and/or Quest for Metal talking about it in future videos of theirs due to them being more lax about listening to and reviewing controversial artists.
Black Seeds of Vengeance is way Heavier than Among the Catacombs of Nephen Ka. To Dream of Ur just is . Unas Slayer of Gods, and Sarcophagus from Among Their Darkened Shrines is also Heavier than anything else in their catalog. Annihilation of the Wicked tried to capture the evil ambience and creepy Brutality of the first 3 albums, but winds up sounding Commercial. Nile after AOTW is just feeble. When Mr Sanders decided to write songs about eating dog crap and Howling like a wolf to get in touch with the spirit world just doesn't accomplish the goal in mind.
At The Gate of Sethu is one of the worst death metal albums I've heard. Awful production, thin as fuck guitars, TERRIBLE vocal job. I fell in love with Nile with the first 3 albums, and sadly nothing they've done since Sethu is any good. Their new one could take the cake for another unmemorable run-off-the-mill work.
I recently discovered Nile. Immediately bought a 7-string guitar and tuned it to drop A, just to play Lashed to the slave stick. I have no idea how they can be so good, yet so many people have never heard of them.
They were my first death metal band, I got ahold of Annihilation of the Wicked when I was 16. That album changed my life and got me into extreme music
That's one of their best songs.
Nile is the lovecraftian egyptian tomb we all curiously discover like archaeologists in the desert that leads to our inevitable doom. 🤘
@Remedy462 nailed it
Yes, a Nile ranking and review. One of my all time favorites in death metal. My favourites :
1 - Darkened
2 - Annihilation
3 - Catacombs
4 - Detest
5 - Nilotic

One of my all time favourite death metal bands, so here’s my ranking:
1. In Their Darkened Shrines (5/5)
2. Annihilation of the Wicked (4.5/5)
3. Those Whom the Gods Detest (4.5/5)
4. Black Seeds of Vengeance (4/5)
5. Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka (4/5)
6. Vile Nilotic Rites (4/5)
7. What Should Not Be Unearthed (3.5/5)
8. Ithyphallic (3/5)
9. At the Gate of Sethu (2.5/5)
I'm a drummer and George Kollias is my new hero. Dude is a fucking jackhammer.
The one foot god!
Those Whom is their magnum opus imo. I think their songwriting chops peaked there. They are my favorite dm band in general though and i can respect all kinds of opinions on them as long as it is recognized that they are a pretty amazing and unique band.

One of my faves I got em like this
9.Sethu
8. Ithylphallic
7. Unearthed
6. Vile
5. Catacombs
4. TWTGD
3. Seeds
2. Annihilation
1. Shrines
I've seen them 11 times and I still love them to death.
I think Those Who The God's Detest is easily top 3 albums for Nile. I definitely agree with most things you said about the rest.
Black seeds is my favorite
Brian Kingsland, who joined on ‘Vile..’, has done vocals for my band.. He’s awesome, and a good guy too.. The new stuff sounds promising
Annihilation Of The Wicked was one of the first death metal records I got into and still is one of my favourites.
I couldn’t clock fast enough once I saw “Nile” in the title!
Fire vid, My favorite Nile album is annihilation. Favorite song lash to the slave stick.
That was the first death metal album I ever heard!
I love these videos of you reviewing discography’s. You helped me get into Dying Fetus and Cattle Decapitation. Been spinning Death Atlas all week!
Can’t wait to do the Nile Discog run very soon. They have a very unique take on Technical Death Metal with the added Egyptian influence. Annihilation of the wicked is one of my favorite death metal albums.
What are your thoughts on the band Melechesh? I personally think they're really good
I discovered the during lockdown ad never looked back. Im seeing them in London in September 😁
Thanks for the nile rundown. Didn't know I missed these guys so much. Pumped to go back through the list. Annihilation has always been my go to.
they have dial down a lots of the egyptian influences after annihilation of the wicked !That what set them apart from the pack .I hope they it bring back on the new album .They have a new album coming out soon we will see !
Weird. This band has been around for so many years and i havent checked them out. Now i shall! Thank Melterdown

The entire Nile discography is incredible.
FUCK YEA!!!! My fav band of all times I remember the first Nile review of yours and I very much hoped that you would find time to check out the rest. So glad you did.

"Great" hot and dry time for the review, I do listen much Nile and other Death Metal recently.
Home grown Carolina tech death, hell yeah brother!
The 2 demos (compiled into “In the Beginning”), Catacombs, and Black Seeds will always be peak Nile imo.
Nice! Nile kicks ASS! And the New album is coming very soon. I have to order it my nearest Recordshop x. On vinyl of course 😮
Annihilation of the wicked is my personal favourite
Solid choice, its a great record.
I gotta concur, George Kollias is one of the best Death Metal drummers. I watch his drum cam stuff, and it's awesome.
Naaaaah I just started the video but that joke was so wrong it had me dying 😂💀
My favorite are Vile Nilotic Rites, Black seeds and Those who the gods detest which its great song writing and storytelling.
Nile is my all time favorite Death Metal band. It is really hard to pick a favorite among their albums. Maybe Those Whom The Gods Detest.
I love me some death metal but I found the majority of this band's songs that I heard being fairly run of the mill, and none of them stuck with me. Ooooh every Nile album review? Me likey
every bolt thrower album when???
Them being my all time favorite DM band.....here's my off the cuff ranking, not the most fan popular by any means.
Ithyphallic
In Their Darkened Shrines
At The Gate of Sethu
Annihilation of the Wicked
Vile Nilotic Rites
What Should Not Be Unearthed
Those Whom the Gods Detest
Amongst the Catacombs
Black Seeds of Vengeance
I saw them with napalm death and strapping young lad back in 2003. That show changed my life
thats a wild line up
@@themetalmeltdownofficial it was. The berzerker were there too. First time I ever heard them
going to see nile in september, cant wait
In their darkneed shrines to me is their best album. But my favourite song is annhilation of the wicked. Second favourite album is probably "Among the catacombs"

hmmmmm maybe...
Dead month you say eh? You then got time to review every king gizzard and the lizard wizard album right? 😅👀
Never listen to nile before.
Trust you so wil start with wicked and let you know.
And could NOT disagree with you more on Sethu.....in the top three records for me by these guys. They went full on borderline daring and experimental with this release. Their 10th album is coming next month.
Has the band re released some of the stuff they thought was badly mixed?
My favorite albums are:
1. Annihilation of the Wicked
2. Black seeds of vengeance
3. Ithyphallic
4. In their darkened shrines
5. Amongst the catacombs of nephren-ka
Have to listen the albums after Ithyphallic more often

Karl Lives like 2 streets over from me haha. Always love seeing the hometown boys on the interweb 🤘.

No. Not interested in giving oxygen to a nazi apologist like Naas.
Gates of Sethu was horrible. Those Nu Metal - Pantera style Vocals do not belong on a Nile album. Absolute garbage
Ifalactic? 😂
This band skipped foreplay and went straight to anile. Nile is deadass brutal. 🏳️🌈🤘💀
I love At The Gates and What Should Not
What's up with the nerd shtick?
