My best friend died in 2012. About 5 years later I accidentally discovered how to read all your old conversations in Facebook, and I found a message from my best friend that I'd never seen, one of the last ones he ever wrote me. It was this song/video, and he said, "I really, really dig this song. Let me know what you think". It was very fitting, as he was always unafraid to die, and always smiling and laughing. And I love this song.
such a beautiful story. sorry for your loss. thank you so much for sharing
This song has such the emotional potential. Gives me goose bumps when I hear it, and a smile in my heart. Sorry for your loss - hope you are healing.
Sorry about your friend pal. It’s a beautiful story and i thank you for sharing.
Peace
This song was all over around my 22 year old son died. He so looked like the kid in this video at that age.,

These guys cracked the code. This song is timeless.
"I wanted to pay for my successes with all my defeats". Incredible.
Buena canción :)
“Oh, you can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks. You can stare into the abyss but it’s starring right back.”
Those lyrics always hit home for some reason.
Pure genius
If you like lyrics like that (and aren't already familiar), check out Dr. Dog. "That Old Black Hole" is my fav song of theirs and I think you'll see it carries some of the same awesome vibe that this song has.
@@Nastard2 Great song. I love Dr. Dog!
Stare into the abyss and it’s staring back is from Nietzsche. Very fitting of Dawes to quote a famous philosopher.
To feel completely understood.
This might be the most lyrically-deep song I have ever heard. True musical genius
"And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you" Nietzsche
And that line leading into it, "You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks." What a fantastic application of that Nietzsche quote. I know so many people in my life waste their effort condemning the world around them for not being as good as it should be, without realizing all this time wallowing in wasted potential has wasted their own.
Any more snide sarcasm you'd like to share?
Any more ice cream?
***** I'll get the Ben n Jerry's if you load the bong!
My favorite description of the band: "spirituals for the non believer."
Agreed.
Thanks for you description in one sentence from Corsica, French island...Just discovered this band on a live on the kimmel show...love the band now. Have a good day. Stay safe, take care. ;-)
I’m a believer but to go
I love that
I love them
my mother died in 2010 4 years after my brother, my whole world fell apart and then i heard this song and it lifted me...
Mack Loyd I lost my best friend and feel a similar lifting up of my soul with this song. Good music heals.
It is an intense song...
nice story....thanks for sharing
My best friend died in 2010
So good. It will do that to you. So sorry for your loss. I thank my lucky stars I have all of my immediate family members.
I just heard this on the Browns/49ers game on TV!
the chorus is so darn catchy.
this band is quickly becoming my favorite.
Here I am hearing this song for the first time & it's 2022!! & I totally agree with you!! I love the harmony's, GREAT MUSIC!!
These guys are bad ass. GREAT group, great sound, great artists. Give these guys money NOW. Saw you 5/26/2011 at Higher Ground in Burlington. Super impressed.
The introspective mirror this song holds... when I hear it I can't see past the tears in my eyes and I know the futility of trying to wipe them away. There are few songs that hurt the way this song does, and for that its beauty can never be challenged.
Just heard this for the first time , what a great track
Boy, I sure do like this song's lyric's... nice to know somebody is still writing songs out there, not just trying to keep their media scores up.
i agree bro. ua-cam.com/video/5yqOCzJb8IY/v-deo.html

Gucci Gang bih I can’ buy bih no wedn rang
There is something magical about this song.
I won a $100 bet that it was DAWES who was playing this inspirational song while watching a commercial for the NBA draft on ESPN!! Couldn't believe how many people never heard of you... BUT THEY DO NOW!! Have loved you guys forever... THANKS!
This little boy is my sons TWIN. What a shock!!! Even my son was confused. He kept telling me he didn’t do that and he certainly did t get in trouble to go to jail. He looked at the mirror and back at the video on pause.
So cute 🤗💜💜💜
Found this song on Spotify only recently part of the ‘Indie road trip’ playlist and I can’t believe I hadn’t heard it before and how old it is, well relatively old, this sounds like it was just released this month. It’s on repeat in my car now
Sweet !
When I play this song in my car we all belt the chorus out at the top of our voices-brilliant song-love the Dawes!
You are the best band ever
Ugh I forgot how good this song was, come back to me
I’ve been listening to this song for eight years now. I have more songs in my library than most will ever listen to, and I’ve determined that this is the greatest song I’ve ever heard. Thank you Dawes for this song and for keeping me going through the hardest times. Much love always.
Yep
I just found these guys, & I'm not disappointed!! Love this song, great to go cruising with, & I love their harmony!!! I'll be playing this song a lot!!👍👍👍👍👍
I heard this off the Chevy truck commercial and thank God i found it. This is a incredible song.I'm only a fan of the song but the group also.I actually have goosebumps on my arm right now.You never get this kind of harmony anymore.Keep up the good work boy's....
One of the best bands in America. Have loved their music for some time now.
these lyrics and this tune is incredible. can't stop listening and trying to memorize it all.
They played before Mumford and Sons and did a damn good job. Never heard of them before Yesterday, but I've proudly bought their CD
I could barely watch Cool Hand Luke because it was so sad but I love the fact that the video is based on it.
Dawes was the band of my childhood. I've listened to them since I can remember and my dad and I used to sing their songs together and he would play them on the guitar. Even after almost 11 years I still come back and listen to them constantly. They have gotten me through some of the toughest times in my life and bring up so many bittersweet memories. My father left on my 13 birthday 2 years ago and I haven't seen him much or been able to sing with at all and I really miss it. My dad is not a great guy and I know and understand that he is not always good for me but damn do I miss doing things with him. Especially singing Dawes with him.
So sorry you had to go through that pain, sadly anyone can have children, but not everyone can be a parent. But you know what? YOU can sing for yourself!! Music is the greatest gift on the earth, carries us all through our lives, be they good or bad. Sure hope your life is on a happier path now.& pray for your Dad, never know what trials he will go through, & when or if your turn comes to be a DAD be a good one & treasure the gift you were given. Take care of yourself!!
respect. great or not we are human.
I saw this band live back in 2010 when I was a kid. Playing a smalltime show in a barn on a farm called CodFish Hollow. They play a great show
One of the most inspiring songs I've heard in a long time. Truly beautiful.
What we've got here is failure to communicate.
Some men, you just can't reach.
So you get what we had here last week -- which is the way he wants it.
Well, he gets it.
still love this song.
2020 still amazing u are lyricists dont ever stop
Mumford and sons brought me here. Thankyou sooo much mumford and sons.
"If heaven was all that was promised to me, why don't I pray for death?"
Thank you Dawes
Finally, someone said it! 🙌
This is a great song.
Lyrical masterpiece
Music that grips you and keeps you coming back for more 💫
AGREED!!!😊
Saw Dawes last night with Hiss Golden Messenger......absolutely amazing show! The crowd got super into it when they played this song
Cole Terrell I just saw them open for Jeff Lynne’s ELO and was so glad to finally know who does this song.
they are one of american face
Big thumbs up to mumford and sons for introducing me to this new beautiful music :)
I'll be 62 this summer. One of the things I've appreciated about the era I grew up in, is the music. Great, great songwriters and bands. These guys feel like they belong in that era. I can't believe I'm just now discovering them. They played Walla Walla with Mumford and Sons as part of the Stopover Tour a couple years ago. I was there and didn't even notice. Got a Stopover t-shirt from that weekend and sure enough, there's Dawes listed among the band names. Meant nothing to me until today. Dang ...
These lyrics are phenomenal.
Love this track. I moved away from my family when I was young. We all kept in touch but we aren’t a close family. We don’t call each other every day. We linked on social media. I tended to add awesome songs. This was one of them. they all agreed. Great track guys
Phenomenal show last night at the stopover in Bristol. Seeing Marcus Mumford join them on stage for this was amazing.
Prophetic words like so many of their songs. Explains what happened so well when I stared into my abyss.
What just about everyone has missed here is the literal reference to Nietzsche, direct quotes from which are brilliantly interspersed through the lyrics. For those of you who have found inspiration through this song, I would recommend reading the source.
First learned of Dawes in 2012 when they opened for Mumford and sons in Pourtsmouth, VA. What a pleasant surprise it was!
WXRT in Chicago brought me here when they played the live version of this song ....with the audience singing background put smile on my face .
I love you too Estaban! He might not be the "best" player on the Madrid squad but he has the best taste in music by far. God, this is good.
Heard this song in the "Hung". I never listen to ending song in this show, but this one is definately worth listening.
Their gig supporting My Morning Jacket at the Enmore last night brought me here!
Hi guy's, I see your presentation in Monterrey, and I enjoy very much your music. So I'm here, starting be a fan of you.

I just saw them live last night and they were incredible. Amazing vocals, presence, lyrics, music, everything. Taylor, the lead vocalist is a wonderful artist and guitar player!
This song describes all my life. Thank you guys for such a great song.
Still my favorite song after all these years. I want it played at my funeral someday haha
i feel this. 💛 i set up my funeral playlist when i was like 20 haha.
Dawes is great fun to listen to AND see live, the drummer and lead singer makes really intense faces
Speaking as an old Sweathog friend and fan, I strongly approve of this band. *S* Great great great composition and execution. Well done dudes.
A song for my funeral if ever one was wrote.
One of my future funeral songs also❤🎶🎶❤
The chorus of this song is directly lifted from the Grateful Dead's "Attics of My Life". It's the EXACT same vocal melody and harmonies. Am I really the first person to notice this?
Absolutely love this song ever since it came out
Never watched the video before, love it. Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand.
I just found this song a few days ago. I have had it on repeat to and from work (45 min drive each way)
Really strikes a chord with me.
First time for me & it's 2022 now & I totally agree with you!! & I love the harmony's!!! GREAT TUNE!!
This song is great! Can't wait til y'all come back to Texas!
Great song. Lil Smokies cover live version at the Bluebird is amazing
"What we have here is a failure to communicate."
Austin Wyatt Cool Hand Luke doesn’t have much to do with this.
They're even better live :') Thank you M&S
@FandomUnited Hell yeah! They were awesome! Front row baby!
i know its just a video. but, i really hope that sweet kid gets away. Bless his heart and all of the kids that have it tough. The world isn't all cold and mean
ya you do feel sorry for the kid in this video!
In the movie this video is based on, he doesn't get away. But in a way he does.
but doesn’t anybody see ALL of them are the same man in different times?
It is based on Cool hand Luke so i dunno.
they were so good at the portland stopover! Thank you Mumford & Sons for asking them to join you:)
i think i just shat myself.
no .
i didnt.
powerful this music video.
i feel my cool hand, luke.
Greg Holden & Lelia Broussard brought me here with their fantastic cover of this.
If you haven't seen it, go watch it now. You won't regret it.
can't wait to see these guys on the bright eyes tour
song almost made me cry at the end
You guys created a great song here! Just like a tree only produces so much fruit you have a spot in the harvest once again! For us to still be here listening to such a great song after years and years of what could’ve been the end... we get to enjoy! This song has a creator. Everything on this earth does too... and the earth is no exception! Thank you Jesus
Best song ever to hear live. Amazing experience.
They're playing at a local record store here in Portland in about a week and I'm beyond pumped to see them.
Of all the diversions of life, there is none so proper to fill up its empty spaces as the reading of useful and entertaining authors.
Great band, both albums and live.
Beautiful song, moving video. It gave me chills the first time I watched it.

Saw them two nights ago with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes. This song was the one that most inspired me. Truly a moving and endearing song. As for the video, I personally love all of the Cool Hand Luke references. So choice.
