    To my beloved wife, gone three years now. I do my best to carry on our support of the four beautiful daughters you gave me and the now four wonderful Grandkids we have. To those who felt they had to dislike this I say, you have not lived enough to understand my friend.

    This song was written by Robert Burns after he bade farewell to his lover Mrs Agnes (Nancy) Maclehose. She left to rejoin her estranged husband in Jamaica. Burns never saw her again.....

    As a lad growing up in Montreal, Quebec 40 years ago, I was force fed the melodies of Scotland. It didn't register much then. Now I appreciate the TIMELESS quality of this music. These are the classics of the future. Thank you Robert Burns. I distinctly remember listening to the great Thomas L.Thomas who was not a Scot but a Welsh baritone singing the songs of Scotland. My old 33 RPM disc has seen better days. Does anyone know if this gem is available on CD or downloadable somewhere ?

    Ae Fond Kiss
    BY ROBERT BURNS
    Ae fond kiss, and then we sever;
    Ae fareweel, and then forever!
    Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
    Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.
    Who shall say that Fortune grieves him,
    While the star of hope she leaves him?
    Me, nae cheerfu' twinkle lights me;
    Dark despair around benights me.
    I'll ne'er blame my partial fancy,
    Naething could resist my Nancy;
    But to see her was to love her;
    Love but her, and love forever.
    Had we never lov'd sae kindly,
    Had we never lov'd sae blindly,
    Never met-or never parted-
    We had ne'er been broken-hearted.
    Fare thee weel, thou first and fairest!
    Fare thee weel, thou best and dearest!
    Thine be ilka joy and treasure,
    Peace. enjoyment, love, and pleasure!
    Ae fond kiss, and then we sever;
    Ae fareweel, alas, forever!
    Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
    Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee!

    fire side music/ the tunes - flickering flames/ warming cold night of loneliness/ What is cradled/ cradling?/ mother's arms/ find their trace/ they'll be with you/ at the end of the journey/fire side music/ what is cradled/ cradling?/ your soul.
    The Corries tunes accompany my journey from beginning to end.

    to gataflacha: I recentlly researched and learned a bunch of Burns' songs to do with my singing partner. It was the first time I ever encountered them with proper music, and I now regret a lifetime of having felt apathetic about them, having only read them as poems. Now I am a fervent fan!

    It's funny how the quality varies in this BBC 1987 TV series. Some of the songs are ho-hum, how many times have we done this already, others are absolutely brilliant. This one is not so spectacular (though not bad), but Roy's singing of Loch Lomond, for example, is probably the best Corries video in existence, their crowning glory. Certainly not topped by anyone else and unlikely to be.

    I love this traditional application of the mandolin; it's a very different style of playing, compared to how one often hears mandolin in bluegrass or country music. Does anyone know the name of the larger stringed instrument? Is it a lute, or something else? Thank you.

    I liked the corries, but the more I listen the more I realize that they seem to compress all the songs to 1/2 of what they once where. I like Ronnie's more traditional sounds but here he kinda races through. not bad but try Andy Stewart, or Fionna Kennedy they have fantastic versions of this one.
