      Eric Bogle really has been able to capture the anti-war sentiment. His song, "And the band played waltzing matilda" is another fine example of his work.

    My great uncle was in the Black Watch, and died in this war. My grandmother named my father after him. I still have an old photo of him on my desk in front of me. It's very sad that people today have no idea of what our soldiers went through.

    With deep respect to those that understand the sad nature of war's apathy. My family like many of yours have always served in the militaries of the world. My great grandfather was there, as were my grandfather and his brothers, my father, and my brothers and I. Very Respectfully, from Virginia

      Ronnie gets the feeling of the song over so well. Just sitting by the grave and thinking about what went before. . . and as it says in the song . . it happened again, and again, and again. Time to go back to the days of the men sending the army to war, going with them to the front line !

    • @col1152
      @col1152 10 років тому +8

      Very true, strange that we celebrate sending 30,000 men per day to their deaths, what a damn waste, someone should be held responsible instead of suggesting we had a lovely war!

    Written by Eric Bogle, a Scottish folk singer who emigrated to Australia in 1969 and then returned. He's fantastic live, if you ever get the chance, and his version (which he originally called "No Man's Land") is still the best. Nevertheless, this is still a wonderful and haunting rendition.

    This video from The Corries’ 1987 BBC series (now on DVD) is beautiful for many reasons. The music and the images are woven together with so much pathos and meaning. The stark black background punctuated by spine-tingling images of war's horrors and Ronnie's mournful lead singing create the same mood. From today’s perspective, Roy emerging from the darkness to join Ronnie on the chorus adds an almost spiritual dimension.

    I am a Falklands vet, thirty years ago I watched the Sir Gallahad get hit and fifty men loose their lives, five days later I was in the thick of battle, another twenty men lost their lives. This year because of the anniversary and the fact that I have found it just to painful, I decided for the first time in thirty years to attend a remembrance Sunday service in my local town. I decided to wear a white peace poppy instead of the traditional red one. A guy looked at me an called me a coward.

    This is one of Eric Bogle's fine old songs. He calls it "No Man's Land" and he has written a sequel some 30+ years later called "Hallowed Ground". While many know him for this song and "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda", he actually has a vast body of work. His mid-career "Best of" collection is 5 CD's long - pretty much all outstanding. There are many of his songs on UA-cam - look a bit - enjoy!

    I find it very hard to cry over a song but as I write this, I feel my eyes sting with tears. Already I've lost count of how many times I've sung this unconciously in my history class.
    Beautiful song about such a terrible thing. I find it heartbreaking that so many young men British, French, German and others are simply bones beneath the ground because of the slaughter of World War One.

      It's Independence Day weekend here, so in a mood of patriotism, they let me sing this song at church to mark the start of WW1. They say I did okay, but I have no way of knowing. One of the guys teared up at the 1st verse, so to make it thru I kept my eyes fixed on the music. This war to end wars was the epitome of war with no end. That's what's so sad. The song captures that feeling.

      A usa group, founded in 1985. It has a branch in the UK. They have taken non-violent action to oppose all military action by the USA, the UK and the other European powers, except Russia. They state.
      "opposition to all war is the official position of VFP because we know that peace cannot be realized by waging war."
      They dislike NATO.
      VFP has called for the dissolution of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as "NATO has always been a war-making institution lacking in accountability to the peoples of the nations it claims to represent."
      VFP states that NATO has waged wars of aggression against Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya.
      VFP states that NATO maintains nuclear weapons in violation of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, but not Russia.They back Russia's protest that Russia is threatened by missile base construction on its borders.
      VFP cites Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Mubarak as examples where NATO did not address human rights abuses by dictators who supported NATO, and charges that NATO supports "Israel's expansionist agenda"
      So there you are.

      +Mr .Creosote Were certainly not as free as I would like us to be , one day Scotland shall have total Independence , free from Westminster / London rule and in time free from our current ` bond ` with Europe , we can be friends / allies etc , but not have to obey their rules . The education system , should never have seperate schools , boys / girls , plus it could go on a 4 day week , mon-thurs , allowing Frid/Sat/Sun for religious followers to choose their own gods should they choose to do so , that way we can outlaw religion in Schools , the breeding ground for the worlds troubles , Hitler was a Catholic , but he certainly never promoted a Christain lifestyle , he tried to out do The Romans / Ceasar . but it stillwill not alter my total respect for those that sadly lost their lives in such terrible conditions , ( sadly maybe now mostly wasted lives ? ` as you just look around and the country is now multi-cultural , maybe as it should be ? , the world is for us all , not just the rich / powerful . )

    • @mindyourownbusinessfatty
      @mindyourownbusinessfatty 8 років тому +2

      David Craig As an Internationalist who is just getting ready to head for Levellers day in Burford, I can assure you freedom will never come from Nationalism. The idea of Scottish or indeed any independence is an illusion. The so called Scottish independence will not free you from market forces, Capitalism, wealth, power, class and Royalty

    • @007DavidCraig
      @007DavidCraig 8 років тому +1

      +Mr .Creosote , I do agree with you in that theory , sadly our world is ruled by greed / power / wealth , or simple ` bullying ` , though naturally if you work harder than your fellow worker you tend to want rewarded for your efforts , but in our country now , Lawyers / Accountants etc , often charge rate is in excess of £200-£500 + per hour where trades peoples rates generally are £30-£50 per hour , so the balance requires adjusting , safe journey sir , :-)

      @@murdochmclennan3510 the great war is history for many . However as the song says it happened again and again. Up to and including the current generation. My husband was killed in action 13 years ago but at least i found out promptly and he was flown home to rest. I try and keep my war in perspective...the casualties we miniscule compared to the casualties in ww1 and ww2. However for those left behind its never fair

    Surely by listening to this can't we all recognize the futility of war. It's always the young who give their lives.

    This Latin phrase originally occured in Homer's "Odes". It is possibly best known from Wilfrid Ownen's use in his poem from WWI. His use was intended ironically, as the conclusion of a poem descirbing the horrers of death by nerve gas.
    Ther is an entry in wikipedia for this phrase.

    This has to be the most emotive and beautiful song I have ever heard, it makes me think about my relatives that died in this futile and pointless slaughter

    Ronnie made a comment many years ago on this song where he said something along the lines of, "People keep asking us why we sing all these anti-war songs."" His response was, Well, maybe one day some one will start listening!

    It's funny how we all say that these brave men and women all died for our freedom when in reality every war we have had results in less freedoms and more wealth for the elites. RIP all
