Nina 👋 👋 Nice reaction 😎 You've done John Farnham & now Jimmy Barnes... Their duet is now a must!! It's a Sam & Dave hit, 'When Something is Wrong With my Baby' Live version..there is two. My vote is for the Hey Hey it's Saturday live version(a long running 3hr Live tv show, of the 80s & 90s) Then do John & Tom Jones on the same show👍 lol ..hey, 'if you don't ask' ... 🤣😉 ✌️❤️🇦🇺
Jimmy's daughter Mahalia Barnes is doing the backing vocals so I would recommend you listening to her with Joe Bonamassa doing Riding With The Kings. Forgot to say that the drummer is Jimmy's son.
It’s been said, but I’ll say it again: John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes singing ‘When Something is Wrong With My Baby’… Live on Hey Hey It’s Saturday… Sublime 🙂
In the 1980s I was plodding around the world as a Brit squaddie and an Aussie mate who was attached to my unit for a while gave me some Cold Chisel tapes. I have loved King Jimmy of Australia and his band/s ever since. Hearing this took me back to those tapes and at that time I wore out a lot of joan Armatrading and Supertramp, Crime of the century, tapes. Nice. one. I know nothing about music, I just love this song which I've heard hundreds of times. now I understand it's architecture a bit more than I did 10 minutes ago.
Great reaction, Nina! Wow, Jimmy seems to have a lot of twang available, which really helps his voice cut through a big arrangement like this. I liken this song to classics like Mustang Sally and In The Midnight Hour; songs dripping with soul and attitude. Joe Bonamassa provides some tasteful guitar playing on top. I have to say, though, that I was hearing the piano in my right ear most of the time. Hey, it's a good excuse to listen to it again, right?
Jimmy surprised a lot of people when he went into his soul and blues phase after going solo. He's been showing his great versatility ever since. One of my favourites though is his performance of Lay Down Your Guns with The Living End.
It’s interesting you mention the gospel aspect as Jimmy was influenced a lot by the gospel and soul movement singers of the “Deep South”. He really does still have a great range at this age and his voice has matured over time.
I said it once, I said it twice and I'll say it again. He ain't got nothin' on Nollsy a.k.a. Shannon Noll. No king of Ostraya can be born in Scotland. Nollsy is the rightful heir to the Aussie throne being born and bred in the land down under. Nobody, and by nobody I mean Jimmy, touches the indelible, affable, gallant, suave, debonair, enlightened yobbo, alpha male and the two and a half octave voice range Shannon "Nollsy" Noll. And no you are not a real doctor. 🤣🤣🤣
Jimmy's daughter Mahalia is one of his backing vocalists, she also backs Joe Bonamassa and is a fantastic singer in her own right. A great video which showcases Joe's great vocals, and the backing vocalists is his video "Redemption". Joe is always very generous in making sure his band and vocal backing gets recognition.
For a complete contrast his cover of Wild Thing with his legendary band Cold Chisel is quite a stunner as is When The War Is Over and Bow River along with his collaboration with John Farnham on When Something’s Wrong With My Baby.
Always been a fan of Jimmy Barnes and Cold Chisel but his collaborations with Joe Bonamassa are next level. And as mentioned in earlier comment Jimmys son and daufghter also work with Joe. Can I suggest Nina you check out Cold Chisel and also Ian Moss who was another member of that band. Finally, I really enjoy your reviews. You know your stuff girl. I'm officially a fan of yours now.
These guys are all state-of-the-art musos and vocalists. Top notch and so wonderful to hear what experts can do together. Their Lazy from the same studio is also epic. Jimmys group Cold Chisel, with their Bow River live at Ringside 2003 is legendary.
Jimmy Barnes Aussie pub music legend...as a solo artist and with his band Cold Chisel..Barnsey is Australia's rock legend...❤❤ Luvd ur reaction much love from Perth Western Australia and this weekend 11th November 2023 Jimmy Barnes is performing live ere in Perth at Fremantle Prison...& Yeah can't wait to go see him... nuthn better than seeing Barnsey LIVE
Favourites eveywhere here. Jimmy (I was 17 when Cold Chisel started), Joe Bonamassa, the gentleman who creates these arangements is incredibly detailed, and now you Nina. I really enjoy your reactions and analysis very much. Professional and fun. Im a fan 😊❤
I've been waiting 2 years for you to hear Jimmy's amazing voice. Could you please check out Soothe Me by Jimmy Barnes and Sam Moore. Jimmy released Soothe Me last year just after his 66th birthday and Sam More was 86.
Joe is totally amazing and kills this performance, but not all 'favourite guitarists' have him as their favourite. It can also be a battle between Joe and Tommy Emmanuel (ie if your favourite guitarist is Eric Clapton, he's 'Tommy' fan)! 😉 😊
@@devilsadvocate2548 yes. i utilized an exaggeration to make a joke and illustrate the fact that "punters" have never heard of Joe, but every guitarist on the planet worth his salt has heard *of* him, at least. i've been playing guitar for 30+ years and if a guitarist tells me they haven't heard of Joe, i don't take them seriously and i find out a short while later i was right not to. the point is, there isn't a musician on the planet that wouldn't drop what they are doing and run if Joe asked them for help on a song. RUN. but yes, you can always keep going back, Tommy is obsessed with Chet Atkins, always has been. my favorite guitarist is Nuno Bettencourt and i have no clue who his FAVORITE guitarist is, tho i know Brian May is a hero of his.
This performance is just incredible, this is what music is all about. Would be awesome if you can check out Jimmy Barnes with his band Cold Chisel “when the war is over” live Ringside 2003
This. 100% this and then Wild Thing from their last stand tour at the Horden Pavillion for completely off the hook Barnesy blowing the roof off a joint. Also the duet with John Farnham of When Something is Wrong with my Baby featuring Diesel from Hey Hey it's Saturday is a work of magic to behold.
Born in Scotland but definitely Australian. You should check out his original band, Cold Chisel. Try, "When the War is Over". There is another singer in that band, that is different to Jimmy but equally as good, called Ian Moss.
Hi Nina long time fan of your channel. I see people have mentioned his Daughter Mahalia Barns and I agree. Her vocals are amazing and she did a similar duet with Joe Bonamassa singing "Riding With The King" Waiving to you from Australia
Now you must react to Australians Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham singing the cover of, 'When Something Is Wrong With My Baby'. It is brilliant ! While some recommend the the 'Hey, Hey, It's Saturday' TV version, I believe that the LIVE performance by them at the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association ) Awards , in front of the cream of the Aussie music audience, is superior. Although both singers were born in the UK, they emigrated here as young children and grew up immersed in Australian culture. They do not consider themselves as Scottish of English. The same goes for my older siblings, too, who emigrated here when young.
Ooh you've gone and dunnit now Nina!.😂 John Farnham, Jimmy Barnes ( Farnsie n Barnsie)!. Cold Chisel. You have now stepped on the precipice of the deep rabbit-hole of Aussie Gold!. May this herald a deep dive into our Aussie classics and legends!.👍 Zebedee from Oz 👍👍
Jimmy wrote this song... one of my faves. Check out his time with his band Cold Chisel. Amazing performer live. Jimmy's daughter is on backing vocals and son on the drums. His kids were once a band called the Tin Lids..... love your reaction.
Jimmy is awesome, used to drink serious amounts but went sober for his family and his life and like John Farnham (who he did a some duets with) is singing well into his later years with more power than ever. Although John may not sing again but hope he will be able too. Many big hits and performances with Cold Chisel, with Ian Moss who is also a great singer. His daughter is also a powerful singer, and not a spoilt brat, Mahalia sounds like Aretha Franklin and sings backing for Joe. Heard Kasey Chambers cover of Lose yourself yet? she nailed it.
Proud Adelaide (South Australia) boy here.. Jimmy is one of our favourite exports. Cold Chisel of which he was lead singer was part of the sound track of my youth. He just keeps getting better with age! 💜
I'm an alltime JB fan and Jimmy is certainly awesome.....good to have you back Pretty Eyes. Love to have some more Aurora from you all the best NIna all!

Welcome to what we've been spoiled with for generations in Australia. Jimmy has been around the traps for many a year ... with Cold Chisel and individually. During the EXTREMLY long Covid lockdown here in Melbourne Australia, Jimmy and family (many of whom are musically talented in their own right) helped us from going insane by doing a song or two from their home each day. You have opened up an enormous box of goodies if you want to further investigate Jimmy's work over the years. He is one of the top Australian music legends. Joe is a guitar God ... nuff said!
I’m an Aussie! Barnsey used to part of a band called Cold Chisel.. You should check out some of them, especially Forever Now. As a solo artist check out Working Class Man & No Second Prize. For his foray into soul music, check out his album Soul Deep. Additionally look at his album called Flesh and Wood, some great acoustic versions of his previous hits.
All this great vocal from a guy whose voice is virtually wrecked (compared to his younger years ) - jimmy was probably the BEST singer i ever heard live - and for that matter maybe a GOAT .....he was that good . Renee Geyer was another .
Great review - you are one of the only reactors of this song to mention the backing vocals (performed by Tina Arena - another well-known Australian singer). This song is a re-recording of this track which Jimmy did for his 30:30 Hindsight album which he did to celebrate 30 years as a solo performer after he left the band Cold Chisel. It is interesting to compare this version with his original version as the original is much more acoustic and the guitar work was done by Ian Moss who was the lead guitarist in the band Cold Chisel, for which Jimmy had been the lead singer. This song was written for Jimmy by the keyboardist from Cold Chisel, Don Walker.
@@devilsadvocate2548 You're right according to the record credits : Tina Arena did vocals with Jimmy and the backing vocals were by Mahalia and Gary Pinto. I guess Tina was better known at the time so she got top billing. Most of the tracks on this album featured collaborations with well-known Australian or international stars eg. Keith Urban, Living End, Steven Van Zandt, Diesel etc. I guess that was why it was a number 1 album on release.
I just adore your reactions, and I believe I have a pretty good bead on what you tend to like. In that vein, please take my advice...if you are not familiar with the music of the Manchester Orchestra, you are depriving yourself. I almost hope you are already a fan, because I know you'll love them and I don't want you to go without this phenomenal band. Please, please react to the song The Silence...I don't say this lightly, but there are a small handful of songs that have actually stopped me from whatever I was doing the first time I heard them. Literally pulling the car over, or going into a different room to allow myself the freedom of surrendering to the song. This is absolutely one of those. My first concert was Rush on the Moving Pictures tour when I was nine. I have nearly forty years of every genre imaginable under my belt...from Thelonius Monk to Otis Redding, from Hank Williams to Sturgill Simpson, early Marillion to Slaughter to Prevail, synth pop to death core and everything in between...this band, Manchester Orchestra is something unique...please listen to The Silence. Love ya❤️
Thx Nina for your expert analysis of our Jimmy. We do consider him an Adelaide icon, grew up sneaking out to the 'wrong side of town' as a kid to see Cold Chisel play.
Jimmy released an alternate version of this song as a duet with Australian singer Tina Arena. Quite a different dynamic and really lovely with Jimmy and Tina trading lines.
Thanks for that. I really like Jimmy Barnes (and Cold Chisel) and am always happy when others discover just how good he is. You're reaction showed how much you enjoyed it. There are many Jimmy/Cold Chisel videos I could suggest but as a follow on I'd recommend reacting to Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham singing "When Something is Wring With My Baby" live on the TV show Hey, Hey It's Saturday You've reacted to a few John Farnham videos, now it's soul time. A minor correction: Jimmy is Scottish-born but came to Australia as a 5 yr old in 1962 and has lived and worked in Australia ever since. I doubt any Australian would consider him Scottish-Australian. (And I realize that you have a lot of Scottish blood.) In Australia we tend to think of all as "Australian" regardless of origin. Given that roughly 30% of our current population was born outside Australia I think that that is a good thing.
G'day Nina! Barnes y as he's called here is an icon of Australian music Check out his duet with John Farnham called when something is wrong with my baby
You should have a listen to his vocals when from he released this track in the early 90’s, particularly his acoustic version on his Flesh and Blood album. Jimmy has always had amazing pipes, and still does. I saw him last year on his Soul Deep tour and was completely blown away
Back in the 70’s Barnsey was asked about his singing voice. To which he replied it’s controlled screaming 😂😂. Also the Gibson guitar is a lot more mellow than the Fender
You really should check out Joe Bonomassa & Beth Hart performing "I'd Rather Go Blind" Live in Amsterdam. Joe Bonomassa performing "Midnight Blues" live at the Beacon Theater is amazing too!
I just love your presentation and proficient delivery of your thoughts about our great Australian artists and you make it so much fun to keep on watching and watching you. What an incredibly talented gifted artist you truly are Nina, thank you. Warmth, Tatyana.🤯🤯🌟🌟👍🥰🥰🥰
I would love to hear your reaction to Jimmy Barnes & John Farnham's version of "When something is wrong with my baby". If you are going to do this, please listen to the live performance at the 1991 Aria Awards.
I know we only have one voice, but some talented people , like actors for example, can use many different voices. Jimmy sings in many voices. His natural voice appears to be a smooth , clear light baritone or tenor. But Jimmy does prefer to use gravel, which goes from Baritone up to high tenor to scream. Then a silky smooth head voice he only uses when backing another singer.......many have likened this voice to Aretha Franklin, but i cant hear the similarity at all, except it can sound like a talented female soul or gospell singer. When he does a duet with John Farnham, then you realise how good they both are and how extra talented Farnham is.
Its a great version , if you can find his original recording his voice was different ( I think a better vocal) with the notes not so harsh ( but hes sung a thousand times since then so fair play)
All I can say about this is SOUL! ❤

The control Jimmy has over his vibrato at his age is unreal. The growl WOW! Joe Bonamassa opened for B.B. King when he was 12 years old!
Why not listen to the whole song and feel everything they are offering, enjoy how great it is and then play it back and break it all down.
There are many Jimmy/Cold Chisel videos I could suggest but as a follow on I'd recommend reacting to Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham singing "When Something is Wring With My Baby" live on the TV show Hey, Hey It's Saturday
You've reacted to a few John Farnham videos, now it's soul time.
A minor correction:
Jimmy is Scottish-born but came to Australia as a 5 yr old in 1962 and has lived and worked in Australia ever since. I doubt any Australian would consider him Scottish-Australian.
(And I realize that you have a lot of Scottish blood.)
In Australia we tend to think of all as "Australian" regardless of origin. Given that roughly 30% of our current population was born outside Australia I think that that is a good thing.
This version is also done as a duet with Tina Arena. You should give it a listen.
Please react to Jimmy barnes and john farnham live on "hey hey it's Saturday" singing something is wrong with my baby.
Known as 'the White James Brown' Jimmy Barnes oozes soul like no other.
The Best.
G'day Nina! Barnes y as he's called here is an icon of Australian music Check out his duet with John Farnham called when something is wrong with my baby
He’s an Aussie dear.😂😂😂😉⏰
Don't be condescending mate.
Only the very best professional musicians would even be able to set foot in that studio. Anything less would be out of place in there. Just amazing.
About time!
One of his sons on drums here and his daughter backing vocals
The drummer is Jackie Barnes Jimmy's son.
Jimmy and Joe recorded this song in 1 take.
Nina, a lady with golden hair.
That’s me! 💁🏼♀️
@@ninaschofield only youuuuuuuuu....NINAAAAAAA...
He is an Australian icon, 58 when he sang this by the way
Little over excited with that break button luv
😊
Just throw in a little factoid, his band mate from Cold Chisel, Don Walker, wrote this specifically for him.
I just love your presentation and proficient delivery of your thoughts about our great Australian artists and you make it so much fun to keep on watching and watching you. What an incredibly talented gifted artist you truly are Nina, thank you.
Warmth,
Tatyana.🤯🤯🌟🌟👍🥰🥰🥰
Nina Schofield you should listen to Jimmy Barnes and his son David Campbell do a a duet together
You can also react to Jimmy Barnes and Ian Moss sing I put a spell on you. This is a great rendition in on of their concert live.
Jimmy is an Australian singer he came hear as a young boy.
When he does a duet with John Farnham, then you realise how good they both are and how extra talented Farnham is.
that is jimmys son on the drums, and it was done in one take
RIDING WITH KINGS!!. JOE BONAMASSA WITH MAHALIA BARNES!!........JIMMY'S DAUGHTER!!
Bow river live performance. Jimmy sining wild thing as a younger jimmy barnes both with cold chisel .both songs live
You might want to check out broken heart with the dead daises😀
Its a great version , if you can find his original recording his voice was different ( I think a better vocal) with the notes not so harsh ( but hes sung a thousand times since then so fair play)
re: the gentle close. Well, she is sleeping. No need to wake her up.
