Some interesting facts, the drummer was Jimmy's son and his daughter Mahalia was one of the backup singers on this song. She has been a long time singer with Joe's band and took center stage with their song Riding with The King. The Barnes family are very talented musicians.

Jimmy Barnes credits Tina Turner as the biggest influence on his singing. She joined him in recording a duet of her hit "The Best". He has also covered her hits "River Deep - Mountain High" and "Proud Mary". He said, "She bared her soul every single night on the stage, and it was like, it was painful and beautiful to watch at the same time. And that's what I liked, that's what really attracted me" (Source: "Jimmy Barnes on the Singers Who Influenced Him", National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, 2018).

It’s funny you mention the accent because Jimmy still has quite a decent amount of Scottish in his accent- it definitely isn’t your classic Aussie accent but somewhere between the two. When he goes to Scotland he comes back with a stronger accent 😂 You’d love his early days rock/reggae/soul band Cold Chisel

    • @kathyconway5327
      @kathyconway5327 Рік тому

They say that your accent is set in stone at the age of ~12. I think Jimmy was ~ 6. Relocating as a youngster makes your accent malleable - think Barrack Obama for example. But Elizabeth was a satellite city that grew fast on UK migration and I imagine they had hybrid accents of their very own like they did in my migrant town, or sometimes Scots talked like aussies until they crossed the threshold of their hame.

    • @ray.shoesmith

I'm adding another vote for a review of 'When Something is Wrong With My Baby' by Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham & Johnny Diesel, if you're willing! Gotta be the live version from Hey Hey It's Saturday for the perfect a cappella harmony at the end - and with those three, the voices are just as good or better live than they are in the studio.

His voice has aged incredibly well, he still sounds just as great as he did back then. Btw, I'm also a huge B.B. King fan and I had a chance to see him live in '06, during his 80th birthday tour. Due to poor health, he had to perform sitting down, but he still held the entire room in the palm of his hand for the entire show. Jimmy is a legend! He has emerged from a terrible background of childhood neglect, alcoholism and drug abuse, to overcome a lot of demons and become a family man with a pretty stable life. It's funny that you should comment on his Aussie accent, because his speaking voice still has quite a Scottish inflection even though he's been here since he was five. BTW the song was written by Don Walker, the main songwriter with Jimmy's group Cold Chisel. They had a string of classic songs in the 70s & 80s, and still perform occasionally today.

Jimmy, both by himself, and with band Cold Chisel are absolute legends here. Oh, you haven't even scratched the surface with the talent we have here.

Jimmy was actually a rock icon, and his band Cold Chisel was at the forefront of the uniquely Australian “Pub Rock” genre. Have a listen to “Khe Sahn”, “Flame Trees”, or the live version of “Bow River”, which also showcases the vocal talents of Chisel’s guitarist Ian Moss.
Also you need to hear Jimmy sing a duet with his good mate John Farnham. “When something is wrong with my baby” is a song much like this, you will love it.
Interesting you mentioned his Aussie accent, Jimmy actually speaks with a Scottish accent! It is not as strong when he sings but it is there when he speaks. He was born in Scotland I believe.

Great review Beth. The other musical force behind this song is its writer Don Walker. Don is one of Australia's greatest song writers and has written many masterpieces for Jim with their band Cold Chisel and Jim's solo career. Don is the keyboard player and primary song writer in Chisel. The emotional hits in the song structure as you described are a common feature of Don's work. Star Hotel and Letter to Allan by Cold Chisel would be other great examples.

OMG... finally, Finally, FINALLY! Ever since the short announcing this was coming, I've been back to your channel 4x/day. One of the UA-cam vocal coach greats tackling the most supreme voice in the universe ☺♥
Jimmy Barnes is without a doubt the greatest male rock vocalist in the history of music. Note-perfect, powerful, emotional, raw, and always stunning. Is Jimmy's voice the sound God makes when he sings? God wishes. Jimmy also seems to be a really awesome person. 50 years of singing and he just gets better with time.
You should do more. A weekly Jimmy Barnes reaction to examine the ultimate singer's entire catalogue. There are moments when his voice does things no other voice has ever managed:
ua-cam.com/video/x4Wwq9_zn_c/v-deo.html - consider his talent for harmony along with the stunning high modal and falsetto voice!
ua-cam.com/video/pcR6ML0Saew/v-deo.html - same song, years later... and Jimmy's only gotten better. His vocal flourish at 3:36 may be the most beautiful sound ever recorded.
ua-cam.com/video/mdxXiE3_AHE/v-deo.html - a good example of how adding Jimmy's voice to something that was already good can elevate it to a hymn that makes angels cry.
ua-cam.com/video/erSJGrpfnOI/v-deo.html - young Jimmy. Jaw-dropping energy. Has any song ever ended with more passionate drive? No.
ua-cam.com/video/XlVZ28ScttM/v-deo.html - senior citizen Jimmy. Oh look, he's ever better!! A tour de force live.
ua-cam.com/video/G-vwOHV2aVs/v-deo.html - soul. Pure soul. Even if he wasn't the finest singer ever, he'd still be great. Of course, he is the finest singer ever so... wow.
More! Beth, give us moooooooooore!!! ☺☺

Jimmy is Glasgow born, and grew up in Adelaide, South Australia. (My hometown).
There, in the late 70s, he joined the GREAT Aussie band "Cold Chisel".. And then went solo in the late 80s..
He is Australia's Bruce Springsteen, the "Working Class Man"..
Cold Chisel have written about 10 of the greatest Australian Pub Rock tunes EVER.
Some of the most beautiful music ever written.. Every member of the band wrote a hit song..
Check our "When The War Is Over", "Bow River", "Flame Trees", "Saturday Night"..
Funny, as an Aussie with Scottish/Glaswegian Grandparents, I pick the Scot in Jim's voice mixed with the Aussie haha
Joe B plays such TASTY licks, I can tell you dig it.. What a tone, Les Paul Mastery..
