What INTERMEDIATE GUITAR PLAYERS Must Know Moving Forward!!!

- Intermediate guitar players must know how to connect the chord and the scale together! Early on I didn’t do that. In this intermediate guitar lesson I will show you some simple ways to connect everything that you play. Targeting the root note of the chord and building phrases around it is a great place to start! This is a beginner-intermediate guitar lesson. For a player that is stuck or maybe just starting to solo and improvise on guitar. We make make improvisation harder than it has to be! Don’t stay stuck in the 1st position minor pentatonic scale. KNOW THE FRETBOARD!!! It’s so important for you to be a confident guitar player. This simple technique will help you move forward today. Work on this everyday and you’ll make progress around the fretboard. This skill is essential for improvising blues rock guitar solos!

The difference between someone handing us a fish for dinner and teaching us to fish! Thanks, Rusty! Jim C.
I like the way you put things, Jim! Thank you for checking in buddy 👍
@@rustysguitar1 Hey..........I too grew up with 'Kung fu', Grasshopper!! :>) Jim C.
@@jimc6687 I did also! Thanks man 🤛
Here at the old folks' home, when they gave me my first guitar two years ago, they all told me, "Don't feel bad -- I've been playing for FITY YEARS!" and "I been playing SIXTY YEARS" and "I've been playing 100 YEARS!!"
And then a month later when they started asking how I blew past them so fast, I would ask them, "Show me all the E notes on the fretboard. Show me ANY E notes."
It makes all the difference from memorizing a few tasty licks to understanding the fretboard as a map you can navigate.
I'm not saying this trying to brag, but to prove your point. Because I blew by them by taking your lessons.
Now they're getting it, and we have a music group that meets every Friday to jam!
🎸🤘
I love this story man!!! Confidence on the fretboard is the key! You are well on your way Crash. Happy Jamming with the “OLD” guys! I’m glad you’re getting something from the lesson’s. Thanks for the comment buddy 😎
I have been at this for a long time and I learn something every time! THANKS RUSTY!
Cool Mike! I’m happy that you’re getting ideas from the lesson’s! Thanks so much my friend 👌
Good afternoon, my dear friend. Absolutely Incredible exchange. Did well. Keep it up. Just thumbs up. Big thank you. Have a great day. Best wishes to you and full support, composer Yuriy Saliy.
Thanks YS! Enjoy your day also! See ya 👍
I'm an old guy who recently started playing again. What works for me is playing different lead lines between chords in a progression. Now I have built up to more complete solo lines with the ability to fall into chord patterns and variations at will...almost. Because now I'm struggling with hand pain. Oh well.
Glad that you are playing again Gregory! Thanks for checking out the lesson! Later buddy 👍
Around the 6:00min mark your example sounded a lot like Black Sabbath’s War Pig…as always another great video to refresh as well as create new pentatonic ideas…Thank You Good Sir!

I grew up playing Sabbath! Thanks man! I appreciate you checking out my videos! Have a great week 🤛
Wonderful lesson. Thanks for sharing this great video. Greetings from Argentina 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸💯💯💯💯💯💯🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Greetings from Chicago! Thank you. Much appreciated.👍
Good job. So important to know the fretboard. Yes its a daunting task. But like you said learn them as you go. Start on the 5th fret. Those are easy as the open strings. Just have to do it.
Well said James! Early on, I did not realize how important it is to know the fretboard! We have more confidence as we learn it! Thanks a lot bud 🤛
The good intermediate guitar player's UA-cam subscription path: First 24 months = sub'd to 50 channels, 25-48 months = sub'd to 10-15 channels, 48+ months in = sub'd to Rusty's Guitar channel and those of a few other good online teachers. That's all ya need. Thank you for the quality content, Rusty.
I like the way you say it! I’m glad you like the channel! Thanks so much Tito 🤛
OMG! That guitar brought back memories for me. My lovely 1956 was conned out of me by Andy's Guitars in Tin (Pan Alley) Denmark Street, London. Makes me sick to think about it.
That’s a sad story! Mine is an 1981! I love it! Thanks for checking out the video! Later bud 👍
Thanks for reminding me to practice my “go to” phrases in all positions.
Nice Richard! Thank you 👌
I find it also helps to transpose licks to other keys. I once read a famous musician saying to transpose everything to every key, but I found that undoable for me. I just work on transposing to the keys I know best and use most.
Rusty,….. I have so much gratitude to you’ Thank you so much.
Good to hear from you Jon! And I thank you for all your support to my channel🤛
Octave shapes for learning your root notes! Best thing that helped me by far.
And I love your approach to using just a few notes around the root, I always overlook this. Less is more!
You’re right Lee, the active approach is the way I learned. Then just learn the notes around it. Thanks for checking in man. Talk to you soon.👍
That's a BIG but simple explanation Rusty. Thank you. Quite a "wake up"....!!!
Thanks so much CG! I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment! I have a great rest of your week👍
I accidently came across this 20 years ago......it allows you to play with a different feel.....so to be creative!
Thanks Tman! Well said! Talk to you later👍
Sir the way you say Root as Rught is mind boggling 😂
Yep, those open string chords are where I started & finished! LOL Great new lesson today Rusty! What happened to your neon sign?
Same story for most of us Karen! It’s a fun journey! The sign is mounted on the other wall in my studio. I’m going rework the studio soon and get it back on screen!!! Always good to hear from you Karen and have a great week ❤️
Another great lesson, Rusty! That Gibson guitar is very beautiful. Wishing you a wonderful day ❤
I do love that Guitar! Thanks for checking out the video and enjoy your day also Michelle ❤️
Thanks Rusty always great my man I always learn something which is key when I sit down with the guitar I always want to learn something I didn’t know before sitting down no matter how small cheers my man !! Brian Ireland 🇮🇪
Hey Brian, yes, the stuff sinks in so much better with the guitar in your hand! Have fun with your guitar this week buddy! Later Brian 👌
I have seen a lot on YT over the last three years. You are one of the five most effective teachers on the platform. Thanks Rusty!
That’s kind of you to say MV! I’m glad you like the lessons! Thanks for checking in. Talk to you soon buddy 👌
Thanks Rusty! Another great, informative and very practical lesson. Been working on landing on root notes, 3rds and 5ths of chords instead of worrying about scale shapes..getting more comfortable with the fretboard! Blessings brother!
This support means a lot Les! Thanks so much!!! Sounds like you’re working on the right things! It will become second nature in no time! Talk to you soon my brother 🤛✌️🙏
As usual, you’ve made complete sense and unlocked some new understanding for me. Thank you Rusty!
Thanks so much Cliff! I’m happy that the lesson was helpful! Later man 🤛
Another top lesson Rusty. I should have learned this stuff years ago. All the top players like Gilmour and Clapton , Angus etc target the tones. Hopefully some kids are watching and we can start having some great rock bands again.
Well said! Just targeting a few choice notes can make the difference! And I certainly did not do that early on! Thanks for checking out the video and enjoy your Sunday🙏
Rusty: "You dont need to play all the notes of the scale"
Yngvie Malmsteen: "Hold my beer"
🤣 Great lesson as always! It is very true that you gain confidence when you know the fretboard. They say there are no wrong notes. Trust me, there are wrong notes if you heard some of my stuff! Thank you, Rusty!!
Well said! Fretboard knowledge is confidence! For me I need that structure. Gives you freedom. Thanks for leaving this great comment Jason! Thanks and let’s talk soon👌
Great job brother! Targeting the right notes is what sets us all apart! Tone sounds good!
Thanks Shane! I’m loving the LesPaul! I appreciate you checking in bud 🤛
@@rustysguitar1 Yeah Rusty, I noticed you put on a Gibson shirt and offed the Fender !! Love this jam you put together !
Take care !!

Thank you for your lessons greetings from all the students
Thanks a lot 👍
Oh, one more thing. Great sound outta that beautiful Les Paul!
Thanks man! I love that guitar for sure👍
Thank you Rusty for passing on some more of your useful knowledge! I like how you stress (locating root notes and those near) in various places for a given chord to help us break out of one position playing. Also, how you point out it's easier to (learn little bite size) pieces rather than an entire fingerboard chart full of notes at once! Right on my friend. Cool! 🎸🎵😃
Right on Tim! I think we all neglect learning the fretboard! It’s so important! Thank you for checking in Tim. I appreciate the feedback buddy! Talk to you soon 👌
Simple easy to understand and apply lessons. I, like you learned it the long way meaning it took me a long time to figure it out. Now even knowing the notes I always say them in my mind when practicing. The next step was the timing of changing my position as the chords changed. Great lesson
I like this comment! Well said! Thanks for taking the time to watch my videos👍
I’m enjoying your lessons Rusty!
I’ve been playing for a long time and not really progressing, now I’m grinning with some of the lead I’m doing thanks to you 😊
I’m happy to hear that you’re having more fun Ren! Enjoy your week with your guitar 🎸 🤛
Hi Rusty. Thank you. You showed me the basic root notes and opened up a world of possibilities for me as I was stuck for years not knowing my root notes. I appreciate your videos. Have a great day
Glad to hear it Oliver! Thanks brother 😎
Thanks Rusty. I’ve listened to a lot of utubers and seems your way is clearer to follow 😆😆
You’re welcome Herbie! I’m glad you liked the videos buddy👍
Thinking on your feet. Hard to do, but necessary. Find your focus and get back in there before the song ends.
You’re right, it’s a mindset that most of us aren’t used to! But important! And I like how you put it “Get Back In Before The Song Ends” Thanks for leaving a comment and checking out the video! Later buddy.🤛
Rusty. I think you have the most solid vibrato I’ve ever seen 💯 . Thanks for the awesome lesson fren 🐸
That’s kind of you to say MB! Thanks a lot bro 😎
Thank you Rusty, your lessons have really helped me move on. It's great putting all your knowledge into practise.
It’s good to have new things to work on Charles! Sounds like you’re moving forward and having fun! Talk to you soon👍
Thank you very much for sharing your valuable experience Rusty. Cheers from Indonesia.
Thank you mate! Greetings always from Chicago 👍
Awesome Lesson !. Thanks/Gracias.
I’m glad you like the lesson! Thank you👍
rusty, they kept saaying about the root note, you seemed to opened that door to me , as you treach, i like the way you teach,, I'm 67,8 whatever,, but I like that, I'm in N.C. currently, love guitar, and always wanted to play melody lead, I got with GMM program then seen you teaching,, interesting, I'm not falling from GMM guitar mastery,, but picking up tips that make sense.. thanks LJ
Hey Les, yes, you should pick up tips from anyone that you can! I do the same myself. Hope you have fun as you move forward. Thanks for watching my videos LJ!👌
I've been playing for 20 years. I've just used pentatonic improv a lot, with a fair amount of success. improvving over the key of the song. In that time I've never looked at it other than playing in the scale. So after 20 years, these videos having me wanting to expand into understanding more about why things work musically instead of just using my ear. It will probably open up some new ideas which I need.
These ideas will give you more confidence when improvising. I was the same way for many years! Thanks for watching the lesson. Have a great week brother 😎
Know the fretboard ! Right 😊 well I’m building phrases in eastern scales .. also diminished using it in Black night from Deep Purple ... have a listen if you like
Thanks John! Thanks for stopping by! Talk to you later 🤛
You go me rooted to the spot Rusty, thanks.
We all need to be rooted! 😊 Thank you for your comments FB👌
Great lesson. You make this stuff very accessible. And that Les Paul!
Thanks Max! I love that guitar 👍
I love that guitar! Great lesson. Thank you Rusty!
I love that guitar also Sally! Thank you for watching my videos! Talk to you soon ❤️
Don't get the power chord thing unless your hands are cramping. Just play the barre chord, just as easy. Especially when amped up. Loud they're both going to sound identical.
Yeah man! Thanks 😎
Yes, simple layman’s terms, thanks
I do not know a lot of theory so that’s the only way I can do it, just simple! Glad you liked the lesson Caleb! Have a great day buddy👌
Thank you again Rusty.
Much appreciated Turbo! Thanks buddy 🤛
Your style of playing is quite enjoyable.
Thank you kindly Fred! I appreciate the feedback buddy 🤛

You are so right! Thx Rusty
Right on John! And you’re welcome 👍
I’ve been a longtime beginner for quite awhile with long gaps in practice. I drive a truck and sometimes don’t have the time for practice, but I think I’m now a beginner touching on the edge of intermediate. A lot of thanks to you, Rusty. You’ve been an integral part in my advancement! Stay cool 😎
Sounds like you’re excited about playing the guitar 🎸 Let’s just keep getting better together! Thank you supporting my channel. Later buddy 👌

Good to hear from you, Steve and Shannon! Hope all is well! I do read the Bible every morning in my studio! I know you guys do also! Blessings to you both🙏🙏🙏
Beautiful guitar, young sir ...
Thank you 👍
Valuable lesson for me Rusty. I'm one of those who was stuck at thinking everything evolved around the scale patterns, as opposed to concentrating on locking in with the root. Salute!
Glad you liked the lesson! Thanks for checking in mate! Talk to you soon👍
Great lesson Rusty.............your right about us making it more complicated than it is I certainly did for years.......a big thank you Paul from Ireland

Another great lesson, Rusty. You are the best teacher!
I appreciate that Joe! Thank you my brother 😎
I love your videos and they are great instruction for my level of guitar. I would love it it you would include tab of you solos so I could learn them much quicker. Thanks for all the great lessons
Hey Michael, I will add that feature soon. But honestly I don’t like to use tabs because I believe you need to see and hear the notes on the fretboard to better retain the information. Most of my videos are about improvising. But I will continue to improve the breakdown of my videos. Thanks a lot for the feedback Michael! I appreciate you checking out my videos! Later buddy 👌
Thanks!

Love your videos mate, you're getting Better day by day!! You deserve you Channel growing fast!!!
I appreciate your comment buddy! Means a lot! Thanks so much my friend 👌
Great tips! Learning the notes on the 5th and 6th strings as well as octaves has helped me a lot.
Also realizing that once you have located the root you can play the same first position pentatonic pattern from that point.
Early on I also learned a “sliding” pentatonic scale that helped me move up and down the neck as if I actually knew where I was going long before I actually did.
I like the way you worded this comment! Sounds like you’re moving forward in your playing! Thanks so much for checking out the video. Talk to you soon.👌
Great content to get out of a decades rut. Thanks brother!

Hi Rusty - great lesson. Thank you 😊
I appreciate that KH! And you’re very welcome 👌
Thanks 😊👍
Cool 😎 And thank you 👍
Great lesson once more Rusty! I really need to continue learning the fretboard. I find the D string the hardest to remember.
The E is really early on with the power chords, just like the A. I got the B string with the D shaped triads and the G when going for major sounds with the A-shape bar chords and licks around that. However, the D string is somewhat neglected, as the root note on it was mostly a by-product when playing the 1st position pentatonic to me. In this case I used the E-String again for orientation.
Cheers,
Martin
Hey Martin, I think we all learn the fretboard in different ways. But the better you know the fretboard the more confidence you’ll have! Thanks for checking in Martin! Later buddy 🤛
Thanks so much Rusty for this helpful piece.❤
