The intro reminds me of Stranglehold by Ted Nugent , well it’s not exactly the same but he builds on that open A also …hammer ons 5-7 … and muting … ah yes E7#9 Hendrix to complete it all … well color the Am pentatonic, as Dorian … that’s the favorite mode of Santana … he uses this a lot … maybe an idea to do this a bit more with the other modes ? You can add different vibes to a pentatonic making it more interesting and appropriate for a certain style …. Anyway cool tutorial !
I love me some Ted Nugent guitar that’s for sure! Thanks for checking out the lesson John! Good to hear your feedback! Later buddy👍
I had the same thought about Stranglehold
Super!! You are the best and most inspiring teacher for lead guitar....!! Thank you Rusty.
Thanks for checking out the video! Much appreciated👍
Merci beaucoup monsieur 👍🇲🇦❤️👏👏🇲🇦🇲🇦
You’re very welcome! Thanks a lot for watching👍
Droning on those open strings gives it such a fat tone. Did not realize the backing track was so simple until I heard it by itself!! Great technique
You are right BJ! That simple backing track makes you dig in and think a little more. Thanks for the comment and enjoy your Sunday.🙏
Oh yeah, I love that hammering on the bass string there, Rusty ~ very cool!
Thanks, Karen! I love jammin on the bass also! Always good to hear from you. Thanks for checking in.❤️
Rock on rusty… some talk about adjusting tone from the guitar knobs instead of having to adjust knobs on you amp or pedal. I fell into the bad habit of not using my tone knobs on my guitar, thinking the amp was better, but it interiors you playing and concentration. I watch the pros doing tone adjustments almost imperceptibly from their guitars. This is what I am striving for. Thanks, Dave .
Hey Dave, I am constantly adjusting my tone and volume knobs on all of my guitars when I play live. I planned on doing a video coming up about that topic. Thanks a lot for checking out the video.👍
I look at my guitars fretboards now and I can see I’ve been up and down the neck playing
Love that chunky sound, muting with both hands and creating a tempo change with my picking hand in between the cord changes, adding bends up to the root note, adding hammer ons, pull offs etc etc, the variables seem endless ..
it’s 6am, already got and hour of playing in me, and 2 cups of coffee 😂
I’m glad you’re getting something from the lesson! I had a lot of fun making this video! You’re right endless improvising possibilities! Let’s keep rockin! Thanks Jonny 👍
Your the best Rusty, bless you , I learn so much from you!
I’m glad you’re getting something from the lessons! Thanks for watching!👍
This one took me a little while. I needed this lesson more than ever. For the last week, I hear you in my ear saying, chunk it. This exercise leads me to what I fear. Get that looper out and use my metronome and one day create a nice loop that doesn’t sound like I had a stroke mid strum.
You got this chunk, chunk rhythm! Getting that rhythm down definitely helps with your lead playing also. We will keep working on the stuff together Cathy. I appreciate the comment and enjoy the rest of your weekend.🙏
Rocking into 2024 Rusty ... well done mister!!
Right on Phil! We have more rockin to do in 2024! Thanks for checking in👍
I've watched your videos for about 3 weeks now. I had my piano/ukulele lesson today and we spent it mostly on fretboard knowledge. My teacher is happy that I can take Sol arpeggios (G Major) into all the keys on 1-3, but it's a bit more difficult on 2-4. That's cuz I haven't spent as much time repeating the moves. The most difficult part is remembering the names of the notes in French.
My next plan of attack is to get comfortably numb with E minor, and then take that into all the keys. I'll add your linking tricks into my practicing.
Merci for all your help and your beautifully simple videos.
It sounds like you’re really moving forward, Lawrence! That’s exciting! I appreciate you taking the time to watch my lessons! Talk to you soon buddy👍
Just in time! I haven't practiced in a few days Rusty and this lesson made me pick up the guitar. I appreciate your teaching style, especially when you break things down. I need that level of attention for my retention. Thanks man!
That’s exciting! I love when a lesson video makes me want to pick up my guitar! When you get inspired, it is fun! I’m really glad you got something from the video! Thanks and enjoy your Sunday🙏
Jeff Beck was a fan of the dorian mode.
Oh yeah! I love that sound! Thanks for watching👍
Merci ! This one rocks! Never practiced modes. That really sounds good 🤩 Many thanks Rusty 🙏
Thanks so much for this support to my channel! I don’t use modes either. I appreciate you checking out the video. Thanks again.👍

Again, I’m using the GarageBand app. I love using real amps, but in the studio I try to keep it simple for the lessons. Thanks for watching.👍
Another winner 😁👍
I appreciate that WJ! Thanks buddy👍

Right on bro 😎 Thanks for the comment! Catch you later 👍
Absolutely awesome ❤❤
Thank you Julio 👍
Hi Rusty, that's an excellent warmup and practice groove. I needed something new. I was feeling a little stagnant, lol. Thanks 👍 buddy.
I’m glad you had fun with the Doug! Thanks for checking in! Talk to you soon👍
Cool lesson, thanks Rusty.
Always good to hear from you QBRX! thanks so much for checking in! Happy new year👍
Don't know if you've ever noticed that E7#9 (the Hendrix chord) is eerily like Em7b5. Especially when you use it as passing chord to Eaug, I can't tell these 2 chords apart.
There’s just one note that’s different. But they definitely have a different function. You couldn’t use the Em7b9 has a passing cord, but the Hendrix cord works well because of the raised 9(G note). Thanks for the comment! I appreciate you watching the video.👍
Great lesson my friend! Loving the tone, sounds like you slightly rolled off the tone control which really sweetens the lead sound!
Yes, that Les Paul sounds great when I roll off the tone! I appreciate you leaving a comment! Talk to you soon. Thanks.👍
Great stuff, buddy! Thanks!
You’re welcome, Bill! I appreciate you leaving a comment! Thanks and let’s talk soon👍
Great tone today, Rusty. Very effective lesson. Thank you.
I’m glad you like the sound point. Thanks for checking out the video Tito talk to you soon buddy thanks.👍

Great timing for this lesson Rusty! Just what I need right now - I am brushing up my playing of epic rock genre songs that were hits featuring cool rock rhythm and lead guitar. Great lesson, I am learning lots from you thanks - keep them coming and Happy New Year

I don’t know guitar theory, however my ears and fingers do 😂 and amazingly they been keeping it secret for years
Anyways, I’m just having way too much fun to care .. cheers 🍻
The older I get the more fun I have on the guitar! And it sounds like you do also! 2024 will be a fun year in our Guitar journey! Thanks for watching👍
@@rustysguitar1 Absolutely the case Rusty
And every time I watch your videos I get inspired creatively, it’s almost magical
@@JonnyDank888 I’m so glad to hear that Jonny! Thank you my brother 😎
Its got some Leslie West in it.
Yeah man! Mountain guitar! Nice raw guitar tone. Thanks bro 😎
I hear some Uncle Ted.
Oh, I love me some Ted Nugent Guitar. Thanks a lot for checking out the lesson Mojo! Talk to you soon👍
Superb presentation Rusty👍👍🎸🎸
Thank you, Tony! Much appreciated👍
🤘🤘🤘
Thanks for watching 👍
Your tone sounds like Leslie West in early Mountain.
Love it!!! Mississippi Queen 🔥 Rock on Charles. Thanks buddy 👍
Thanks Rusty, a quick look at the Dorian scale (I don't usually bother with modes but I'll bite. I'm not questioning what you are saying, just curious how adding a major 2 produces a minor feel. Cheers
I said that after I added the B note to the A minor Pentatonic scale. It just started to have the minor sound so I said it. I don’t use modes. But I get the sound of the modes by adding chord tones to the Pentatonic scale. Thanks for checking out the video.👍
@@rustysguitar1 - You are right, it sounds great. I get that mixing maj/min is what gives the blues it's feel so it isn't necessarily about a particular major or minor note. Thanks for pointing out the additional notes in the scale.
@@78tag I really do appreciate your comments. And feedback. Thank you so much for your support! Talk to you soon.👍
Rusty you always sound so good what are you using to get your tone amps petals etc. thanks I appreciate you
@@markspence7569 I love using real amps, but in this video I’m using the GarageBand app directly into my interface. It’s a convenient way to get a good sound at a low volume. Thanks so much for checking out the video.👍
So moving all the modes of A down 2 frets (to A Dorian) makes all of them A Dorian? That's what it looks like. Thanks!
All of the modes of “A” start on A root. Honestly I don’t use modes. I create the sound of modes by adding the notes of the chords that I’m playing. That’s simpler for me. Thanks a lot for checking out the lesson. Happy Sunday 🙏

Great Lesson it sounds like your running through a Fuzz what fuzz is it your using if you are I collect Fuzz Pedals and I'm trying to figure out what your Using Fuzzrite a Mosrite clone by Catlinbread is what It sounds like to me. Thanks again and HAPPY NEW YEAR to you Rusty
Happy new year! Actually, in this video, I’m using the GarageBand app directly into my interface. Using a British style amp with the gain turned up. But it does have a fuzzy sound. That really inspired me as I played that riff. Thanks for taking the time to watch my videos. Talk to you soon.👍
Great lesson as always, combined with a lot of fun practicing it. What type of equipment/sound settings are you using?
I appreciate that! I’m actually using the GarageBand app for my guitar sound. I would rather be using real amps, but I need to keep it quiet in my studio! Happy new year. Thanks for watching.👍
@@rustysguitar1 Happy New year to you and all folks here. Txs for the great effort and vids you make. A pleasure to watch
@@volkerhevler390 Thanks mate! I appreciate the support 👍

Hey Clifton, I hope you got some thing from the video. Thanks.👍
What effect are you using
Actually, I’m using the GarageBand app going directly into my interface. The British combo setting with a little delay. Thanks for checking out the video.👍
could you place links to the backing tracks you use? if possible?
In this video, I included the backing track at the end of the lesson . Thanks.
Merci !
