Roger Daltrey on vocals, Pete Townsend on lead guitar, and writer of the vast majority of the band's songs...the late great Keith Moon on drums and probably the greatest bass guitarist who ever lived, the late great John Entwhistle. What could possibly go wrong! The Who were one of the UK's greatest ever musical exports and one of the greatest live acts we ever produced.

We all think to remember 1970s music was so much better than today (and I include myself) and there's a lot of indeed great music and live music was actually live music: but it helps that we forget the majority of the garbage that was also released in the 60s and 70s... Won't give examples but just dig a bit around 😂❤❤

Keith Moon, the drummer, was so wild on the drums he actually duct taped his headphones to his head to keep them from falling off while playing. Go back and watch it- you can see it in this video. He’s also considered one of the greatest drummers of all time. You MUST do “My Generation”. “Baba O’Reily” is another great one.

Do the Live version of "My Generation" from the Smothers Brothers TV Show in 1967. In that version you can see them all leave the greatest calling card of all time! Especially Keith. That show made them in the USA. The Who were the first band to start smashing their instruments. Lots of bands copied them.

The Who started the smashing. They were playing in a club with a low ceiling and Townsend broke the neck of his guitar hitting the ceiling, smashed up the rest of it and that was the beginning of the smashing. They're also THE catalyst of the stereotype of rock stars destroying hotel rooms - and driving cars into hotel swimming pools.

The Who were the first band to smash their instruments. And the first act to use Marshall amps (they helped design the speaker boxes) and the first to use really big amp stacks on stage. They were the first act to use lasers, and the first major rock act to use synthesisers as an instrument. Arguably the first punk band. They sounded like no other band before them and no other band has sounded anything like them since. One of the most influential bands of all time.
    Roger Daltrey: vocals, harmonica
Pete Townshend: guitar, vocals (and primary songwriter)
John Entwistle: bass, vocals, horns (and secondary songwriter)
    Keith Moon: drums
    Greatest. Band. Ever.

Along with Led Zep and the Beatles, this is one of the very rare bands where all four members are famous. Daltry and Townsend grab your attention first, but Moon is a manic genius, and Entwistle stands still while Townsend and Daltry are everywhere, but his hands dance around that bass like mad.
The studio version is worth a listen, post it or not, but the song is loud and complex enough that the clean audio is nice. Of course, that performance is something to behold, too, so not complaining about the live version.

Not sure John Paul Jones would be recognised by the general public, when you say every member of the band is famous. But, all members from the bands you mention are all-time greats.
Personally I'd add Queen, and in my book it's a three way tie or three way discussion, between The Who, Led Zeppelin, and Queen, for the greatest rock band.
Greatest rock and roll band is The Rolling Stones.
The Beatles are, of course, the greatest ever band. Imo.

I was lucky enough to see them live on four occasions, including once at the old Wembley Stadium; I had been comped and viewed from the Royal Box (albeit no Royals being present) where I got into a brawl with a drunken Scotsman! I have to say however, that their best performance I saw was at the old Valley football ground (capacity 90,000), home of Charlton Athletic F.C. in (I think) 1975 where they also utilised lasers, The Who being the first private owners of laser technology in the UK. It was epic!

I saw a very young band from Las Vegas (The Dollheads) at a small gig in Woking, and said that The Jam were from Woking, and Keith Moon lived a few miles away near Chertsey. A ton of rock stars (including John Lennon at one time) lived a few miles north in the Ascot/Sunningdale area. Pete Townsend, first known musician to smash up his guitar on stage - 1964. He must have enjoyed it. Drummer Keith Moon was a maniac. Joe Walsh (the somewhat nuts guitarist with the bandana on Eagles Hotel California vid you've reacted to) said the scariest thing that ever happened to him was when Keith decided he liked him. Moon used to smash through hotel walls to ask the person on the other side if they'd like to drink with him. Check out the YT vid of them in the studio doing "Who Are You?" - it's great and their personalities really show through. But they've got a massive catalogue. They've always been the working lad's version of rock. LIke they just rolled out of the pub and decided to either do a song or find a fight.

Definitely check out the studio version of this at some point but dang, man, it's such a deep rabbit hole, because they had a lot of hits early on in the late sixties.
