With the newest update of custom items, you're able to use whatever you want! Using custom items aren't allowed in the original Blue Yourself speedrun category. However, a subcategory of Blue Yourself was created to allow the use of custom items.
Why the setup? Basically you want to win a race before you do the actual Blue Yourself speedrun. This puts you into the first place position for the next race therefore making you closer to the items and ultimately a faster blue yourself run.

The true challenge is not the run, but the set up.

so how is the leaderboard being laid out since the addition of custom items? Is it just one leaderboard for all blue yourself runs and these new 4 second runs push the older 30 second runs to the bottom? Or are they being split? If it's a split, which one is now considered "true" blue yourself and which one is the category extension? Just curious!
They will be split and have their own leaderboards. The 'true' Blue Yourself doesn't allow custom items. This new Blue Yourself will allow custom items and that's how we differentiate between them.

it's a speedrun where the goal is to hit yourself with a blue shell as fast as possible. In this case custom items and such are allowed. As the other commenters have said, this man also has a history video about previous records.
Yup what the other two said, there’s a long form video essay on the Blue Yourself category, but this vid seems like a bit of a joke because the essay details how important RNG was but this is with custom items cutting that out to make a really short time
