reading the comments and within watching half the video, i realized that the wr holder is in fact the one making the video (talking abt it in 3rd person), but this is also exactly how i'd imagine summoningsalt making a video on his own speedrun wrs. well written, well narrated, interesting to watch, and no narcissistic flex (just subtle flex; if you showed me this video without telling me who made it, i wouldnt have even known skilloz made it). also, its just amazing to hear the entire story from the Very Start, especially since this is a category that is VERY YOUNG in comparison to many well known speedrun categories. its not just the birth of the speedrun wr holder, its the story of the speedrun itself- something that doesn't really get told with most other speedrun docu-style videos (again, probably because its just so young). really enjoyed the video!
I watched the whole 40 minute video without realising that the person making this is the person with the record. You fooled me lol This is how I find out about an amazing category, amazing runs from everybody and just a really funny category all together haha
Same LMAO, I watched this the other day and didn't realize Skilloz was referring to themself in 3rd person until I saw his WR video on my recommendations today xp
What a year it has been! From using shells only on rDDD to glider strats on rMC, the journey of Blue Yourself has been great. I've had such an awesome (definitely not wasted) time grinding this and just being there the whole time. Also kudos for actually making this video my frend, it's fantastic! Can't wait to see someone beat the record!
Eh, you made your own category and then act like any small thing you do to improve time is super crazy. The poll was only voted on by 21 people showing there really isn't anything competitive or significant about this just a small group of people. Also the fact that the first 20 or so minutes are on runs that are on runs that are made within a WEEK of each other so using terminology like "first ever 1:10" holds no meaning when the category is a week old and a dozen people are running it. It makes sense for this to be the case with actual decades old categories eg sm64 with thousands of runners but in this context its just kinda cringe and you look like summoning salt wannabes. **Edit (from reply further down but I know that's too much work):** If they want me to be constructive then here; the video would have been much better had he focused the video on the stats and left the category world records as a side thing. The blue yourself category was quite interesting but the way its presented makes it impossible to take seriously and I couldn't watch past the halfway point because of how dragged on it felt with celebrating the tiniest of increments in strategy, like changing the course or the second run being significantly better, like no surprise. It could have been 20-30 minutes long instead and been far more watchable. Nonetheless I don't care for these runners since they hold themselves in such high regard and the way they have handled someone being negative about their precious little "meme" record doesn't help.
@@onlypuppy7 If you had payed attention while watching the video, you would have noticed that Blue yourself is a MEME category. The MK8DX speedrunning community isn't that big anyway and most of us don't run category extensions in the first place. Also to us few that actually committed to lowering the BY record, any small improvement was big. Using terminology like "first ever 1:10" is completely fine even if the category is new as even for new categories, a wr is a wr. Skilloz didn't make this video because he wants to be like Summoning Salt. He made it because the category means a lot to him and a few others and because some people might find it interesting. It is completely fine if you don't, just don't go around telling people they're cringe for doing something they enjoy.
Blue Yourself might be able to come back due to Custom Items in Versus Mode since you can guarantee blue shells from item boxes and it works even in 1st place and even before the 30 second barrier. If this is allowed for Blue Yourself world records, I recommend making a separate category named “Custom Items” as I believe it would be unfair for these times to be in the same category.
Kind of debatable since the original category is inhumanely possible to beat. So would you have the record suddenly be possible again or leave it dead?
@JSoldierPro I just got a 6 second run so I don't think it's going to be optimized well. BUT you can probably do triple mushrooms, star, and blueshell for an optimized category.
I feel like this mistake was actually a pretty important lesson; making sure you're recording and timing in 60fps is vital in a race based on frames, so this (if maybe caught earlier) could have actually helped people get better times if they were recording in 30fps prior.
There's a lot of people who follow SummoningSalt's format, but not all hit the combo of Informative and entertaining and Interesting like you, along with pleasing production value. Bravo!
Even though I’ve kinda retired from the mario kart 8 deluxe scene. I will never forget the memories made from this. Congratz to all of the runners and thank you for making this. :) Here’s to a sub 34 (which will never happen)
Pretty much the only way the category could be resurrected at this point would be to have track specific leaderboards like there are for others. "How Fast Can You Blue Yourself in Coconut Mall?"
@@r00kiet80 The track is pretty straight though so if there is a track that lets you cut more distance in a shorter time then god glider strats could still be beaten. I'm not too familiar with all the tracks though so I wouldn't know if there is something like that.
It's been a little over a year since Skilloz set his time of 34.867 and it remains the world record. The closest anyone else has gotten is Akhos with a time of 35.133.
Thanks youtube algorithm for randomly giving me a 41 minute video on Mario Cart speed running. Wasn't sure I was going to stick around for the whole video but you kept me interested all the way to the end. Congrats on the ridiculous grind

I just watched the whole 40 min, without even realizing it was 40 min. It felt like 5. Incredible job, and way to stick to the grind. That was actually insane.
Really? Had to watch it at 1.25 speed because the dude was talking so slow. Skipped a bunch too, since he decided to explain some of the most basic stuff. I’m surprised he didn’t explain what mario kart is at the start.
Wow, this was a really well made video, like Summoning Salt level, especially considering it was on a speedrun I didn't even think I was interested in. Btw, the music was amazing. Hope you make more videos like this, MK or otherwise. EDIT: Lmao, just realized that you were the person who got the WR at the end. Maybe I'm dumb for not realizing it earlier but fun surprise on my end.
Reached the end of the video before o realized YOU'RE Skilloz. Speedrunning is something that is genuinely fascinating to me - absolutely amazing video.
We just covered the Skilloz chapter in my 6th grade world history textbook, and here I find this video. I always heard about how important they were, but never really knew why until now.
To bring new life to this category, there should be own leaderboards for each stage. Baby circuit could see some pretty crazy strats, hitting the first CPU with the star when being a lap behind for example. It would also be interesting to see which stage is the hardest to successfully pull off a good blue yourself run
I can imagine that being an insanely creative route to take, it only took less then a year to find the most viable strat for the primary record but it'd be fun to see how someone may do the record on a very unoptimised map (e.g haunted mansion)
"best speedrunning documentaries" is an oxymoron, how can there be a best when they are all the same reskinned video? Every speedrunning documentary maker uses the same speech style and editing style all to make identical stupidly slow paced videos that could be 3x shorter and just as good, because they've all convinced themselves into thinking that they have to deliver all content in a long format for literally no reason.
I just want to let you know that this video is god-tier. It’s done so well and it’s amazing to see the history of a very niche speedrun category such as this. Thank you so much. Idek what kind of other videos you make but you’re getting a sub from me just because of this one video
I don't even play this game but it was so awesome seeing the progress of this speedrunning category. Speedrunning is so much more intricate and technical then a lot of people give it credit for.
I’ve unintentionally blue shelled myself on the DS version when I tried to use a shortcut from 6th to first and had the item wheel going and stopped it early
This category went from: "Imma go blow my self up with a blue shell lol" To "God glider frame perfect super RNG run" But all jokes aside, great video. Was truly a joy to watch!
It may be called Blue Yourself, but this video sure made me feel everything but Blue. Love silly Speedrun categories like this, and love seeing them get the attention they deserve!
Fucking incredible, my dude. I appreciate that you talked about everyone in 3rd person, including yourself. It wasn't until the end of the video that I realize you were the 1st place holder, haha. This is as close to a perfectly optimized run as I can ever imagine, I wonder if someone will eventually shave off that 0.05 and hit a perfect frame throw.
Really well made buddy! Must have taken you tons of work! I hope you get a lot of attention and traffic for your time put into this. Also thanks for giving me creds for some of the music 🙏
If there's any one criticism I have for this incredible video, it's that I wish there was more comparison between the two timing methods. There's a couple times that are given in both methods, but the two methods make the times from later in the video feel disconnected from earlier in the video, and while it's hard to fully accurately give the earlier format, with inconsistent load times and the load possibly not being recorded, it would still be nice to have an estimate for the earlier timing method, or at least linger on the transition between the methods, making it clearer what corresponds to what, so the transition doesn't feel quite as sharp. Otherwise, though, this really is an amazing video, and you deserve all of the praise you've received from the comments and more!
Thanks for the feedback! You make a valid point. I plan to make more MK8DX history videos, and loading times are a large subject even in other main category speedruns. I will try and make it more clear and provide a better comparison for future videos.
“How did Skilloz do this? He was just built like that. Built different. Currently he holds the world record that has been held longer than any other record in the history of the category.”~ deleted Skilloz script
This was awesome, endured 41 more minutes of hunger just because I couldn't stop watching this. Beautiful music (that's different that summoning salt, which I admire as he single handedly set the speedrunning history musics), great and simple editing, solid narration, solid storytelling all combined together for a masterpiece. If you have any more of these planned, please take the time to make them, I'd even support you on Patreon.
Damn I love watching this.. let's see who made this... OMG WAIT IT'S SKILLOZ!!!! Seriously great history of this, please consider doing more. I really want to hear more oddball histories like Blue Yourself, rather than specifically Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but if Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has more let's hear them. Solid video, it had my full attention for over 40 minutes.
“Despite not using glider strates, or using the fastest ground speed cart combination, he was confident he could obtain a world record for himself” I feel like that’s such a backhanded compliment, like bro, THE SASS
"Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the world's most competitive racing game" "But then.... Skilloz got.... this run *Sax plays*" "We investigated claims of cheating in Mario Kart"
I have nothing but respect. this speedrun documentary just, goes hard. much better than others I’ve seen floating around, excited to see what more you can do!
What I love about the speedrun community is that y'all don't gatekeep strategies, you know that sharing is more fun because at the end of the Day you Just wait to see it be done
I've been a speedrunner and a rank 1 player at times and the way to relate to Skilloz editing up this video making the amazing music line up perfectly upon him hitting that one last amazing run.. I felt that drop and I want to tell everyone the feeling on doing that is something unforgettable. All your hard work culminating into this perfect story and you were the one beat all the odds. What a video. All the music choices were superb. Contra starts playing when StrongmanLin takes the stage.. How did you manage to find such a perfect music remixer for this amazing ride. Bravo!
The coolest thing about speedrunning communities, to me, is that everyone helps each other and shares what they find. I remember years ago, a friend showed me some of their art. It was cool, so I asked how they made it. They told me, with complete seriousness, "Trade secret." (Later on I figured out from seeing similar art that it was some procreate features.) This has stuck with me, and that sort of pompous self righteousness just really pisses me off. It's real nice, in contrast, to see when people come together :)
One thing I think you may have missed in the description of how it works: Does the blue shell, when activated identify who is in first place, lock on to them and go after them. Or, does it fly off, move along the track until it reaches first place, updating as it goes, so right before it actually hits (or starts that part of the animation) it decides who to target? This relates to the idea of frame perfect. If the former, then frame perfect is launching when you are in first place. If the latter, frame perfect is launching before you reach first place, so it targets you just as you go into first place.
if you throw it at yourself before you reach first place, afaik the blue shell will always target the person who was in first place at the time of throwing.
Great video! Congrats getting the god glider, it must have been one hell of a grind! Also I'm glad the tradition of the creators of speedrunning documentaries not mentioning they were one of the pioneers they tell the story of is being followed. Such a g thing to do
The only time I've ever blued myself was to BM some friends because I was beating them so badly. The fact that you crazy SOBs made it a speedrun category shows the distance people will go for a gag, and it gives me hope for humanity that people are willing to do it
I've watched this video like 10 times now, and I gotta say I'm not ashamed to say that I lose it every time that final blue shell makes contact and the music hits. This is truly one of my favorite videos on UA-cam. I can't help but feel the emotion that must have been felt by Skilloz when he got that final time. Truly amazing.
Skilloz, your editing, script-writing, and delivery were good enough that I sat here for 41 minutes to learn about the world record progression of a meme category in a game I have never played and know nothing about. Also, mad props for the grind it took to finally get the God Glider Strats to work. That's what fascinates me about speedrunning; like you said, people will push it to the absolute limit of what's humanly possible. Like Abney going for the triple Weathertenko, it doesn't matter how many attempts it takes. If it's humanly possible, it will be done sooner or later.
what a great video! your script writing never felt cringey or boring, you somehow got interesting camera angles and slowdowns of all the tracks mentioned (did you use mktv?), and the editing was engaging. i could always use some more speedrunning world record history videos in my life.
All I can remember from older Mario Karts was that you could not hit yourself, since the blue shell hit the one on the second place once you were first and used it… it is very weird that they changed that!
@@Mima_the_vengeful_spirit I don’t remember how it was there, maybe I never even tried it there, but I remember it being shown by friends, who played Double Dash and maybe even Mario Kart DS!

Same LMAO, I watched this the other day and didn't realize Skilloz was referring to themself in 3rd person until I saw his WR video on my recommendations today xp
lol waitttttt! i didnt reealize either! lolol
This vid was a wildride. You guys are some crazy sons of b*tches 😆
**Edit (from reply further down but I know that's too much work):**
If they want me to be constructive then here; the video would have been much better had he focused the video on the stats and left the category world records as a side thing.
@@onlypuppy7 wow you're fun at parties
It is completely fine if you don't, just don't go around telling people they're cringe for doing something they enjoy.
i remember that first night on rddd :’)

@@topsecret1837 Why not just have one category for not custom items and another for custom items?
@JSoldierPro I just got a 6 second run so I don't think it's going to be optimized well. BUT you can probably do triple mushrooms, star, and blueshell for an optimized category.
Awesome video! Still embarrassed about that 60fps brain fart xD
no worries, you caught your own mistake so its all good. Nothing wrong with questioning the integrity of a run imo
I feel like this mistake was actually a pretty important lesson; making sure you're recording and timing in 60fps is vital in a race based on frames, so this (if maybe caught earlier) could have actually helped people get better times if they were recording in 30fps prior.
@@roshibomb4247 yes exactly.
I JUST REALIZED SKILLOZ WAS TALKING IN 3RD PERSON. What a plot twist, felt genuinely glad after watching this, congrats on the unbeatable record.

I just watched the whole video without realizing that he made it about himself. 😄
Damn i just realized too after reading this comment

That'd be cool but I feel like it might fracture an already smaller community. Idk though I don't follow this game very closely
great idea!
I can imagine that being an insanely creative route to take, it only took less then a year to find the most viable strat for the primary record but it'd be fun to see how someone may do the record on a very unoptimised map (e.g haunted mansion)
This was one of the best Speedrunning Documentaries I've ever seen. The things a meme category can turn into, what an absolute legend. Well done.
You should watch Summoning Salt, his content is also very very good.
I always wanted to know what happens when you throw a blue shell in first, and I am not disappointed
I just want to let you know that this video is god-tier. It’s done so well and it’s amazing to see the history of a very niche speedrun category such as this. Thank you so much. Idek what kind of other videos you make but you’re getting a sub from me just because of this one video
I assume he makes other speed running videos, because he's the current record holder lmao
I don't even play this game but it was so awesome seeing the progress of this speedrunning category. Speedrunning is so much more intricate and technical then a lot of people give it credit for.
"Runners at the time were okay with the honor system." Ah, yes, the bygone days of -2004- 2021 speedrunning.

That skilloz guy sounds amazing. I wonder if he has a youtube channel.
This category went from:
"Imma go blow my self up with a blue shell lol"
To
"God glider frame perfect super RNG run"
But all jokes aside, great video. Was truly a joy to watch!
I can really see the first "speedrunner" (Mystys) saying "lmao I created this."

Didn't expected this video to be made by Skilloz himself... Love the Summoning Salt vibes, I guess I'll sub.
looking at the channel name and seeing Skilloz was a bigger plot twist than i could ever have imagined
It may be called Blue Yourself, but this video sure made me feel everything but Blue. Love silly Speedrun categories like this, and love seeing them get the attention they deserve!
A speedrun category that lived for less than a year, and had such insane levels of optimization in that time. Incredible video too
Big shout out for using Lagunas theme from FF8! Massively underrated game with one of the greatest soundtracks of all time
Fucking incredible, my dude.
Even with TAS it's gonna be a looooooooooooooooong time simply bc there's so much RNG running around in Blue Yourself
Really well made buddy! Must have taken you tons of work! I hope you get a lot of attention and traffic for your time put into this. Also thanks for giving me creds for some of the music 🙏
"Some" of the music? You're even more modest than Skilloz!
@@stefansynths haha well, I guess I didn't realize it actually was all the music 😅
Why the hell did I just watch a mini documentary about people hitting themselves with blueshells thousands of times; I love it!
Did you get a good lunch after watching?
Damn I love watching this.. let's see who made this... OMG WAIT IT'S SKILLOZ!!!!

Solid video, it had my full attention for over 40 minutes.
Referring to one’s self while describing your records in a meme category is such an arrested development bit.
It'll be interesting to see if any of the DLC tracks over the next year-ish will offer a faster path to Blue Yourself.
Yeah that could be very interesting
I love when a new speed run pops up because you get to witness the refinement live
This is like watching the recap of a sports event. The highs, the lows, the emotions, the progress and the climb towards superhuman achievement

The sound mixing on this is excellent. You've really made the reveals that much more impressive with the music popping.
One thing I think you may have missed in the description of how it works:
Does the blue shell, when activated identify who is in first place, lock on to them and go after them.
@@blueyandicyNo, you can let someone else overtake and it will hit them if it hasn’t already got close enough to lock onto you
As a speedrunner myself, I REALLY enjoy these types of history videos. So exciting!
