I don’t think you caught this, but right after Odysseus pulls away in ‘There are Other Ways’ with the “I can’t!”, Penelope’s motif plays in the background (the tune he sings her name to every time)

He fell off the roof, Gigi included it in the animatic at 25:36 . you could see him drinking wine on the roof on the top right of the screen. before he falls and breaks his neck without anyone noticing him. His name was Elpenor
As a pure Athena Stan I must protect my queen from this heresy and point out that in Greek mythology Medusa is born a monster and it’s in the Roman version of the myth, by someone who purposefully painted the gods in a worse manner than they are, that she is raped and turned to a monster by Athena. If you wanted to do someone who has a right to be mad at Athena do Arachne.
@ I have a lot of conflicting feelings after looking this up and seeing that you’re right, she wasn’t depicted that way until a Roman poet basically rewrote an existing monster from what I read on a first search (could still be a pretty big oversimplification, but I hope I’m not too far off). Conflicted mostly because the later origin is one I’ve tried to draw strength from in some really dark moments, but I wish it hadn’t been done in a way that villainizes the gods of a pantheon that the author didn’t worship. I know that there’s a decent amount of overlap and similarities between Roman and Greek mythology, but I definitely haven’t learned enough about it and now have a couple topics to fall down a rabbit hole with! Will definitely be looking up Arachne too, I’ve seen the name and always thought it looked cool, but haven’t ever gotten around to looking into it more thoroughly. Your comment gave me some interesting things to keep my mind busy for a while, so thank you!
Fun background information for the design of Hermes, and saga music. The singer for Hermes, Troy (yes, his name really _is_ Troy), made his own outfit for Hermes. He has the full fur coat, the animatic version has, and his own sunglasses. That man is _deep_ in his character. This isn’t the Circe Saga. It’s the Hermes Saga. Jay has livestreams where he releases canon visuals and songs. After Odysseus ate the flower, it said “Odysseus begins to glow. POWER UP!” Done For is a battle between Odysseus’ battle/heavy emotions instrument-electric guitar, and Circe’s instruments- strings. As soon as she goes into her “other ways” Odysseus’ guitar is _gone._ Circe has all the control again. When Odysseus pushes her away, Penelope’s theme and instrument- the viola, start playing. This symbolizes his thought process returning back to why he’s on this journey- to get back home. The “12 long years” is an up in the air thing. Jay may have gotten the years of how long they’ve been away mixed up, so now “12 years” is a meme. XD
Hermes is not just the messenger of the gods😭he’s the god of boundaries, roads, travelers, merchants, thieves, athletes, shepherds, commerce, speed, cunning, language, oratory, wit, and messages, he’s one of the olympians and he’s the son of Zeus and Maia. And Apollo’s favourite brother
@ Actually no, that’s the Rod of Asclepius, it’s a long standing misunderstanding, Asclepius (son of Apollo) is the god of medicine. And yeah i believe he was a psychopomp (someone whose responsibility is to escort newly deceased souls from Earth to the afterlife)
In the Odyssey Hermes warns Circe about Odysseus, basically he just wants to see chaos and be entertained lol Also Hermes is Odysseus's great grandfather! Also I think he and Circe are exs but this one I'm not 100% sure
Your epic reactions have quickly become some of my favourite. You manage to pick up on so many themes and are really engaging to watch; you elevate my enjoyment of epic! Thank you!
So in the actual Odyssey, he does have sex with Circe. They actually have a Daughter before he leaves, which yes does in fact mean he and his men were there for at least a year or so. Here in Epic though, since Penelope is so important to who he is as a character, he resists.
Generally it’s noted that he didn’t exactly do it willingly - Hermes said he was required to do so if he or his men would make it out alive so there can be an argument made that he’s loyal in the sense that he’s never willingly done it with someone else besides Penelope
@@Megamanlanprime he willingly stayed on the island for a year, his crew had to beg him to leave. I wouldn't count that as loyalty, lol. Also side note, don't remember them having a daughter, they did have a son or three is some variations, but those variations aren't really considered "the original"
The VA for Hermes (Troy Doherty) has really leaned in to his role and has a lot of reels acting as Hermes, complete with the shaded sunglasses and attitude
Yeah, im a lot happier with this retelling - or, at least, I think it was handled in a much more digestible way than a CERTAIN character later on. Feels less like Odysseus being forced to do something as much as Circe is just trying to tempt him so she can get the upper hand again, then when it doesn’t work she realises she got the wrong idea about him. So much better than… “Yeah you just gotta bang her” which is just weird for both characters.
For the Underworld Saga, I'd really recommend the three animatics from the big playlist by SimonSayzzz. The Underworld- TheeArteest No Longer You- Ximena Natzel Monster- gigi I don't know if they are the 'best' but I think they really hit the mark in delivering the message of the songs through

In the source material, Hermes gave Odyssues the Moley, but then went and immediately told circe that Odysseus was coming, which is why she knows that Hermes gave him the Moley. One of my favourite shorts made from done for has Herems peeping n through a window eating popcorn when they show down. Herems is the god of stirring up drama and watching it unfold for his amusement
Gigi has this thing where they can't draw the hand's side correctly, in We'll be Fine when Telemachus raises his hand to high-five Athena, when the shot changes to show her, it's the wrong hand in the air
What happened with Circe's lover is that she loved him, but he was in love with someone else, so Circe did something to her so that he wouldn't love her (and then love Circe instead), but it didn't work. We may or may not see what happened to the woman Circe's lover loved in a few sagas
I think I somehow missed these animatics for Wouldn't You Like and There Are Other Ways, and I look at Epic animatics pretty religiously. Kudos to you, Weeby!
I think Odysseus saying hes just a man is also because hes against a goddess and how can he say no to her for this if it means saving his men, he already used the moly but he still needs to convince her to actually change them back
I think it's fair to say the crew and the winions share the blame lol But objectively, there are also better ways Odysseus could've handled the situation
@@aadityayanamandra8846I concur with the other commentor - people are really quick to find ways to blame Odysseus for a lot of stuff that happens in this telling of the story, but personally for the vast majority of it, to me, he seems to be a victim of bad circumstances or bad actors around him. In “Keep your friends close” specifically though, literally what else could he have done? He warns his men about what the bag is doing and why it can’t be opened, then stays away as long as physically possible to protect it and get them home, only to be betrayed by the person he should be able to trust most (and literally JUST talked to about why he needed his support) the moment his guard slipped.
You should react to some of the cut songs too, they're pretty good. There's "This Is The Way", "Perimedes", "Cope With That", "Elpenor" and many others, these are just my personal favorites. (I will note, you should probably react to Cope With That and Elpenor after the Underworld Saga)
Hermes is the god of messengers, thieves and many more! His story is actually hilarious, i suggest you read about it. He had a big role in the odyssey, as he helped Odysseus many times, and guided the dead souls of his men to the underworld. Many think that Hermes helped Odysseus so much because hes his great grandfather!
Some explanation for Hermes: besides being a messenger of the gods he's also the god of thieves patron of travellers god of invention and guides dead souls to the underworld
Before the Ocean Saga, Gigi made a "there are other ways" video using an early audio clip for the song. it ended on the "Im just a man. forgive me" and until the real song came out, i also thought Ody was going to give in to temptation. I had the exact same reaction you did. 🤣
THANK YOU SO SO SO SO SO MUCH FOR SHOWING LARITA LOVE AND WATCHING THEIR WOULDNT YOU LIKE ANIMATIC ITS GENUINELY MY FAVORITE OUT OF ALL THE ANIMATICS OUT THERE!
I’m sure someone commented about how Hermes tended to help heroes and adventurers, BUT he is also odys great grandpa! (And also circes ex) so gramps was like, “here’s some steroids go handle my coked out ex girlfriend”
Oh yeah ofc the "protector of travellers" would be the one to help the traveller in what is considered the greatest journey in history. I feel dumb for only getting that now
23:23 two things. The summons are the scariest things they can both imagine and it’s tragic that for Odysseus it’s a cyclops. And most people don’t catch it but 12 years is technically wrong. Jorge admitted later that it should’ve been 10 years still but you can choose your favorite reason on why he said twelve. Either he lost track of time or he was exaggerating
There are other ways is my favorite song in all of epic honestly excited for you to react to the next 4 sagas, and just a hint they get better the farther along you. Also excited to see your reaction to some of my other favs keep up the good work weeby
Circe is such an interesting character. Within her songs she lost in terms of power, managed to get out of the situation with only a few actions and almost kill Odysseus, and then when that fails as well manages to send him away (Quite literally to the underworld I might add), all without any loss to herself or her nymphs.
That's probably the most accurate saga in the musical, everything lines up with the Odyssey. The only difference is that the moly only makes him immune to Circe's magic rather than giving him powers, he actually sleeps with Circe (although Hermes had told him to because you can't really say no to a goddess) and they spend a full year on Circe's island feasting before they go to the Underworld, during which Odysseus' youngest crewman comically dies falling from the roof of the palace while drunk and meets them in the Underworld. It's a great adaptation!
25:36 If you look at the top of Circe's palace, you can see a man drunkenly shambling on its roof. This is Elpenor. One of Ody's men. He actually dies here, he falls from the palace and breaks his neck. Ody never notices, not until he gets to the underworld and finds his spirit. Which is why when Poseidon says "43 left under your command" and the spirits in the underworld say "558 men, who died under your command" the numbers don't add up. Its because Elpenor was dead, but nobody noticed.

About Circe having been in love before. It was one-sided/unrequited, because that man was in love with a nymph.named Scylla. And so Circe made a potion and put it in the sea water pool that Scylla used to bathe in, and that transformed her... and, seeing as you've watched the Thunder saga already... Yeah. Jorge also hints at this backstory between them by having Circe's theme play a bit when Scylla is involved
Wait, I remember you! You made a few Danganronpa vídeos that I used to watch when I was obsessed with it! And now you're doing Epic?? I gotta catch up with your reactions
25:36 we do have one casualty. If you look at the rooftop that is, and when they returned back to the ship they were only two instead of three. Was it Elphenor?
i discovered Epic the musical a while back but never really delved into it until like maybe two days ago. honestly the songs and all the fan work are so good!
Hermes is the god of thieves and tricksters as well as the Messager of the gods and a protector of travelers and is known for helping Greek hero’s out of like no reason whatsoever. He is also Odysseus’ great-grandfather and Circe’s ex(in some tales at least). That gives him some reason to offer help then just sit back and enjoy the chaos.
One thing I really like about Jorge's retelling/reimagining of the story is the fact that he changed it so that Odysseus didn't give in to Circe lol. That plot annoyed me SO MUCH in reading the Odyssey. In the original, he slept with her and had between 1-3 kids with her depending on the telling. I love the fact that Jorge was just like 'nope, don't like that' lmao.
I feel like Hermes was going with a win-win scenario. Either Ody lives and he gets to troll Poseidon because he was able to protect his descendant _or_ Ody dies and he was still entertained.
Fun fact: What exactly the moly does is it makes Odysseus resistant to Circe’s magic as well as giving him a bit of a power boost. Unfortunately, moly is also temporary (“it’s only for a moment, till you’ve beaten your opponent”) so Odysseus became vulnerable once more at the end of Done For. There Are Other Ways isn’t just Odysseus resisting Circe’s seduction, he’s actively fighting against her literally enchanting voice because - lest we forget - she’s a powerful sorceress! She has the ability to warp/alter someone’s mind. Odysseus going “I’m just a man” while Circe is singing isn’t him making excuses, it’s the narrative driving in the fact that Odysseus is a mortal and Circe is a goddess. Therefore is an inherent power imbalance between them, and it does not favor Odysseus in the slightest. Part of me wishes you had watched Anniflamma’s version of There Are Other Ways, because her animatic very clearly shows how unwilling and uncomfortable Odysseus is throughout the entire song.
It makes sense that Circe would have beef with Posideon given what he did to Medusa. Also, at the end of the last song, right when they turn back to men and run out of the palace, there's a drunk guy on the roof. His name is Elpenor and he is the sole casualty on Circe's island.
The saying "All Men Are Pigs" is literally derived/inspired from Circe in the Oddysey lmao
Huh really?? That’s awesome! (Or should I say Epic)
you may think that its because of her transforming them but as put in Pjo The Sea of monsters she i only turning them to their true forms so she already believed they were pigs before she got put on her island (which btw doesn't the start of her story and calypso's story sound similar? and they both meet ody)

lol, pretty sure the vocalist of Hermes is ACTUALLY Hermes just vibing with Jorge and hanging out for the fun of it
"I am the list dawling" 😂
"I'm in it"
Omggg I have so much to say! First yessss Circe is such a GIRLBOSS! I love her and Gigi's design for her is my fav. Second, Laritamiauu's wouldn't you like is such an underrated animatic and I love their depiction of Hermes so much! I'm glad you watched their vid for this. And lastly yup yup yup you've called it "he's a man" and "he loves Penelope" the two things that Odysseus is!
Loved your reaction to this! ❤❤❤
Yup. Ody is a certified wife guy.
It's not mentioned in Epic but Hermes is Odys great grandfather.
I don’t think you caught this, but right after Odysseus pulls away in ‘There are Other Ways’ with the “I can’t!”, Penelope’s motif plays in the background (the tune he sings her name to every time)
I love that people always doubt Hermes' nature on the song while he even in the myths is basically:
Do it for the lulz! :D
The first thing Hermes ever did was steal the sun God's cows and then pretend he was a clueless baby
He's just a chaos gremlin and he knows it
Well, if we wanna talk Greek mythology, Hermes is the god of trickery and mischief so it's very natural to think he may about to trick Odysseus 😂 but Epic's Hermes is pretty much a nonchalant chaotic popstar lol
I swear I've listen Puppeteer a dozen times and the "a woman" and "come inside" bits still crack me up. Well done my dude, well done 😂
ALSO I love Hermes he's sooo fruity and sassy go off Kinggg ❣
'come inside'
'Damn' 😂
@@milliegoodwin5389 gets a chuckle out of me every time
Every time I listen to it, I always say "damn" after the first one

HERMES IS IN THIS SAGA‼️
HERMES IS IN THIS SAGA‼️
HERMES IS IN THIS SAGA‼️
(He is my favorite character😭🤍)
Fun fact: one of the men (named Elpenor) was not turned into a pig he actually died not by Circe herself but by getting so drunk he fell down and broke his neck no one noticed so they didn’t give him a proper burial
Hermes is one of those characters who will do something for you and expect nothing in return except entertainment he’s also Odysseus great grandfather and Circe’s EX
Did you notice in the flashback there were *four* nymphs but in the present there are now *three* nymphs *also* Odysseus men were not the reason for that it was another group that came before them
I think in the stories for this some of it is debatable whether it was consensual on Odysseus end
So here’s something funny: the creator accidentally made a mathematical error it’s actually still been 10 years not 12 years but by the time the creator had this pointed out and he realized it’s true it was already too late
Fun fact: when Odysseus voice is high like we see him begging to Circe it’s Odysseus showing vulnerability when there are some strains where he’s trying not to let his vulnerability get to him and sometimes failing
He fell off the roof, Gigi included it in the animatic at 25:36 . you could see him drinking wine on the roof on the top right of the screen. before he falls and breaks his neck without anyone noticing him. His name was Elpenor
@@maskedace0510 that is Gigi’s art though
@@area52ron I know, that’s why I said they included it
@@maskedace0510 okay and sorry if I came off wrong
Fun Fact: Tayla (Circe’s Voice actor/Singer) and Jay/Jorge are actually dating irl! (THEY ARE THE MOST WHOLESOME, AND CUTEST COUPLE I HAVE SEEN…)
OH MY GOD, YOU A REACTION CHANNEL PICKING UP A NEWER AND A REALLY GREAT ANIMATIC FOR WOULDN'T YOU LIKE THANK YOU SO MUCH
“Besides my girl Athena, my pure queen” Medusa would like a word… (I say this light heartedly as someone who loves both Athena and Medusa)
POWER UP!”
Done For is a battle between Odysseus’ battle/heavy emotions instrument-electric guitar, and Circe’s instruments- strings.
XD
26:28 Trust me girl, no you do not!! XD
Hermes just likes to give mortals ridiculously powerful stuff for the sole purpose of seeing what happens. He's chill like that.
Psst...you forgot literature:D
@ Really? Well it does fit in with the “language, oratory, wit and messages” part 😂
Isn't he also a god of medicine? Hence why so much modern designs about medicne has his staff? Also, side-job on the underworld lol
@@e_dzh so... asclepius gave hermes the special rod?
In the Odyssey Hermes warns Circe about Odysseus, basically he just wants to see chaos and be entertained lol
Also Hermes is Odysseus's great grandfather!
Also I think he and Circe are exs but this one I'm not 100% sure
circe and hermes did in fact have a casual bed relationship but i dont think they dated bcos they kinda hated each other's guts lmao
@ive_3101 when I say dating in Greek mythology I mostly mean a fling lol
circe and hermes being lovers isn't in any myth, it's purely a creation of the novel circe by madeline miller
@mayhapslynn I did not know that, thank you
Your epic reactions have quickly become some of my favourite.
Hermes tends to be the Greek god most likely to help heros just for the sake of it. Hes in it for the vibes
"There a re other ways" always hits hard, in the original myth, Odysseus is sexually abused by Circe so that she free his men and let them go home.
This whole saga is so much funnier when you find out that Circe and odyssious's son get married in the original mythology 😂😂😂😂
For the Underworld Saga, I'd really recommend the three animatics from the big playlist by SimonSayzzz.
The Underworld- TheeArteest
No Longer You- Ximena Natzel
Monster- gigi
I don't know if they are the 'best' but I think they really hit the mark in delivering the message of the songs through
The playlist she's using that I made has all those on it
No Longer You may end up being the Gwendy version as I just switched to Ximena the other day and Idk if she's recorded Underworld yet
@coleedgerly5666 Oh! Thanks for the heads up! To be fair, I've seen the Gwendy version, it deserves the love it gets.
23:12 I'm about to ruin this shot for you. You'll never unsee it.
Penelope has 2 right hands, apparently. 😂
I'm so glad someone else noticed that, it's bothered me for so long, lol
Gigi has this thing where they can't draw the hand's side correctly, in We'll be Fine when Telemachus raises his hand to high-five Athena, when the shot changes to show her, it's the wrong hand in the air
Oh boy hope you’re ready for the Underworld saga next.
Surprised you didn't notice that Ody's idea of an ultimate fearsome monster was a cyclops. Heartbreaking
Your videos make me so happy
Hermes is both a god himself and messenger of the gods. He's the god of trade, wealth, trickery, travel, etc
Perfect timing for this to come out. Love your content and love epic. A perfect combo.
13:58 Hermes’ his great-granddad
I think Odysseus saying hes just a man is also because hes against a goddess and how can he say no to her for this if it means saving his men, he already used the moly but he still needs to convince her to actually change them back
Woah woah woah, dont be blaming my boy Ody for what happened in Keep Your Friends Close, he warned the crew and they still opened it
I think it's fair to say the crew and the winions share the blame lol
But objectively, there are also better ways Odysseus could've handled the situation
@@aadityayanamandra8846 like how
@@aadityayanamandra8846I concur with the other commentor - people are really quick to find ways to blame Odysseus for a lot of stuff that happens in this telling of the story, but personally for the vast majority of it, to me, he seems to be a victim of bad circumstances or bad actors around him.
In “Keep your friends close” specifically though, literally what else could he have done? He warns his men about what the bag is doing and why it can’t be opened, then stays away as long as physically possible to protect it and get them home, only to be betrayed by the person he should be able to trust most (and literally JUST talked to about why he needed his support) the moment his guard slipped.
o7, Elpenor on the roof. Remember the number 43 men that Poseidon mentioned going into the next saga XD
You should react to some of the cut songs too, they're pretty good.
There's "This Is The Way", "Perimedes", "Cope With That", "Elpenor" and many others, these are just my personal favorites. (I will note, you should probably react to Cope With That and Elpenor after the Underworld Saga)
I swear every animatic I've seen, draws Circe so Pretty! 😭❤
12:02 fun fact!! If you hear a piano in the background, it means Athena is watching. It's her main instrument in the musical!
wait is that the right timestamp 😭😭? 12:02
ok but the hermes laugh at 18:03 was so accurate 🤣✨⚕️
Hermes is Grandfather of Anticlea, the mother of Odysseus
Hermes is the god of messengers, thieves and many more! His story is actually hilarious, i suggest you read about it. He had a big role in the odyssey, as he helped Odysseus many times, and guided the dead souls of his men to the underworld. Many think that Hermes helped Odysseus so much because hes his great grandfather!
Some explanation for Hermes: besides being a messenger of the gods he's also the god of thieves patron of travellers god of invention and guides dead souls to the underworld
Hermes is odysseus' great grandpa, so he prolly just wants to help him for that reason
Before the Ocean Saga, Gigi made a "there are other ways" video using an early audio clip for the song. it ended on the "Im just a man. forgive me" and until the real song came out, i also thought Ody was going to give in to temptation. I had the exact same reaction you did. 🤣
Whenever you finally get to No Longer You, turn off the subtitles.. It'll likely contain spoilers for future sagas
Another great reaction video. Seeing your reactions to epic is honestly so much fun compared to the others I've seen. Can't wait for the next one!
THANK YOU SO SO SO SO SO MUCH FOR SHOWING LARITA LOVE AND WATCHING THEIR WOULDNT YOU LIKE ANIMATIC
ITS GENUINELY MY FAVORITE OUT OF ALL THE ANIMATICS OUT THERE!
Finally I’ve been waiting
I’m sure someone commented about how Hermes tended to help heroes and adventurers, BUT he is also odys great grandpa! (And also circes ex) so gramps was like, “here’s some steroids go handle my coked out ex girlfriend”
Omg 😂🤣
Oh yeah ofc the "protector of travellers" would be the one to help the traveller in what is considered the greatest journey in history. I feel dumb for only getting that now
so fun fact throughout epic the creator brings in family and those he knows to help do characters and circe is done by his girlfirend
She wasn't his girlfriend before Epic - they met because she auditioned for Zeus, and later Circe, and they fell in love during the recording process.
I love how everyone who watches this song immediately mistrusts Hermes cuz the only other good god is Athena lol
WHY DID IT TAKE ME UNTIL THIS REACTION TO SPOT ELPENOR IN GIGI'S ANIMATIC?!!!
There are other ways is my favorite song in all of epic honestly excited for you to react to the next 4 sagas, and just a hint they get better the farther along you. Also excited to see your reaction to some of my other favs keep up the good work weeby
I love circe so much omgg
Talya is legit perfect
Fun fact: Circe is voiced by jorges (Odysseus) girlfriend
Even bigger funfact they became a couple after she became circe in the musical so they met trough the musical (also they are the cutest couple🥰)
I can't wait for your next one, I just watched your first 3 of these all in the past few hours
Gigi's design for Circe is my favourite.
Fun fact: Hermes is Odysseus’s great grandfather
25:36 If you look at the top of Circe's palace, you can see a man drunkenly shambling on its roof.
This is Elpenor. One of Ody's men.
He actually dies here, he falls from the palace and breaks his neck.
Ody never notices, not until he gets to the underworld and finds his spirit.
Which is why when Poseidon says "43 left under your command" and the spirits in the underworld say "558 men, who died under your command" the numbers don't add up. Its because Elpenor was dead, but nobody noticed.
just love your laugh and commentary, thanks for the video
OMG HI I'VE BEEN WATCHING YOUR REACTIONS FOR A WHILE I DIDN'T EXPECT YOU TO REACT TO MY ANIMATIC TY SO MUCH😭😭
Also it's pronounced Lar-eet-tuh meow (i think- idk, english is not my first language😭)you pronounced well the second time haha, and u got the meow part correct it is also because i love cats lmao
i have been watching ur reactions and as a friend to a theatre nerd myself and someone who enjoys playing in theatres, ur reaction reminded me so much of her, cant wait for u to get to the vengence saga, her fav is get in the water and i cant wait to see which one is ur's
Imagine your great grandad descents from the heavens, gives you weed then tells you to go fight the president. There you have "Wouldn't you like"
Hermes is considered a trickster god so you are right to not trust him outright.
OMG NO WAY YOU REACTED TO MY FAV WOULDNT YOU LIKE HOLY IVE NEVER SEEN THAT IN A REACTION VID
25:36 we do have one casualty. If you look at the rooftop that is, and when they returned back to the ship they were only two instead of three. Was it Elphenor?
Hootie looks so sinister in the background
i discovered Epic the musical a while back but never really delved into it until like maybe two days ago. honestly the songs and all the fan work are so good!
1:06 “hey Eurylochus survived! That’s good!”
Is it though?
Coming down to flirt with grandson to challenge old flame. #justHermesthings
