Hi, developer of Homarr here. Thanks for showing off our software. I appreciate the feedback. Let us know if you have any trouble or need assistance. Cheers 🥂
Nice! You did an excellent job! I’ve since added some widgets and I love it even more. It genuinely solves a problem I never knew I had until I found this, and it does so beautifully. Just make that image search chill for a second would ya🤣. Thanks again for your awesome contribution to the community!
Love your software for auomating torrent downlaods and orginization. What would you suggest as an alternitive as TrueNAS scale has made it harder to configure my qbittorrent app with my VPN?
it looks like Homarr is tuck in a deploying state on my true nas scale latest edition. Its the only app that I have seen this do it so far.. any thoughts?
I will probably save this to my watch later playlist because I spent 12 hours banging my head against a wall trying to get plex and other apps to work but nothing had the right permissions, every video was using an outdated UI, nothing looked the same and so i just yolo'd it to windows. Even just the 1st 8 minutes has been more helpful than any other Truenas tutorial I have seen. 10/10
Yeah, I heard about this on the WAN Show and was a bit disappointed because I had not swapped from True Nas Core until 2 days ago. Still loving True Nas Scale right now!
You mention that Plex needs Auth when there is no internet. Under Settings>Network, there is a setting to add IP Addresses of trusted clients without auth. Just make sure to reserve the IP's of those devices so they dont change. Hope that helps. Pretty good video, thanks
I’ll give it a try! There was some workaround I did a few years back that worked until I got bougie and setup plex “home” with different users and login codes.
This video was so helpful in setting up an immich server, I just used the default stuff for the path and it's working really well especially with tailscale I can access my photos from anywhere, thank you so much❤
so did I... Got burnt by Storaxa aswell. Built my own server now. Absoultley brilliant video. The time it must have taken to make it. It is really appreciated. In 2 hours went from blank TrueNAs to a system that supasses my old system
The videos were very helpful to me, I like how it is illustrated and although I am not good at English, I understand half of it, I have replicated everything you have shown in the video and everything worked for me the first time. Thank you very much for sharing your experience and time, starting today you have a new subscriber. P.S. I'm new to the truenas world, I come from the synology world, sorry for my English!!!!!
Thanks for the demo and info. I am in the same boat, I have a HP-DL360-G8, and I am starting to move and migrate my apps, to a slower and less power consuming device. Have a great day
I rarely comment, but just wanted to say thank you for such a great walkthrough! I have the *arr stack + jellyfin running off a rpi4 and recently got the itch to upgrade. Ordering my parts and feel more confident after watching your video, thank you!
Good video. Your the first person I've watched that explained the NewsReaders, Radarr, Sonarr & Prowlarr connections so I could understand them. Still somewhat confusing, but doable!
Thank you so much for this video. All the current videos on UA-cam are so outdated that is difficult to follow. Yours are up to date, make sense and easy for me to follow.
Dude this is great all in one video, I've been sitting on my server up untill today out of date for about 2 years so this was sooooo amazing jumping back in to refreash my knowlege and apply the new methods based on changes to the newest version of everything
So glad I could help. I’m really excited to see where electric eel and docker take this platform. My guess is by Christmas everything will look different, but the logic behind most should stay the same.
Thanks for explaning this in such a way that a total noob can understand just started my homelab and felt way over my head with 3+ servers with proxmox, unraid, jellyfish, etc...
I had to redo all my aplications again on my Truenas Scale 23.10.s VM for a clean start with all apps, and this video was fantastic aid to help complete that so thank you for this video. Now to tweak the ARR apps further , if only I could find that video or my notes....
FOR ANYONE CONFUSED BY TAILSCALE LIKE I WAS: Mr Randy is using the TrueNAS catalog version of the tailscale app install. The config screen for the Truecharts app looks WAAAY more complicated, and it won't have the options he shows at the same locations. Make sure you're using the original catalog's install if you just get lost on the install screen
I loved the video it has been a great walk thru on what is needed to get up and going with sab, sonarr, radarr and such. I don't use truenas. I have a asustor 8 bay using their built in software and most of my apps are running on a windows nuc but the app setup was extremely helpful since the apps (so far) are the same regardless of what os you run them on
really great video. very well explained, especially the the sabnzbd part and the news part (i went with eweka), and also covering the the entire Arr suite.
I don't normally comment on YT but wanted to say a big thank you to you for saying something in the plex section that made me realize where to adjust my pathing that allowed me to update my plex server that I had been fighting with for months now. Now to watch the rest of the video.
Good stuff, bitrate targets are really aggressive compression, which maybe be fine for you, but other people following the guide may want higher numbers. It probably is noticeably worse than 4k bluray. 3GB/h for 1080p and 6-8GB/h for 4k is probably the minimum for visually lossless if you use a tool like ffmetrics to compare a remux source to a recompressed version. Targeting a PSNR of 0.45 and a VMAF of 93. 4k bluray is already H.265 to start with, so it is harder to squeeze more compression out of. Also if your client supports AV1 direct stream (apple tv, nvidia shield, firestick 4k) it can probably get 25-50% more compression for the same quality as H.265.
I love this, thank you. I did bump mine up a tad a little while back, mainly because if random older content wasn’t available in 265 it wasn’t grabbing anything…and leaving larger gaps in some series than I wanted.
@@Randyisanerd the other option is to use tdarr to convert to h.265 yourself. I have been trying to find a more efficient setup for my server to need as few drives as possible, while having as much quality as possible, and have been testing a lot of encoding. I probably should make a video on it.
I used to transcode old school from Blu-ray to handbrake to makemkv and all I remember is it taking FOREVER even with a decent graphics card at the time (I want to say 1060)…but you’re not wrong, maybe I’ll dive into this rabbit hole, thanks jerk!
I am new to TrueNAS but thank you for all your time and efforts in educating us all with your experience, time and wisdom. I am definitely going to subscribe and would recommend to you all aswell.
Followed your guide here and it worked out great... I finally migrated off my old Ubuntu based media box that's been spinning 8x 1TB drives since 2006... The only thing I'm not completely happy with and having to tinker is quality settings... I'm really struggling to find / update some of my media with Sonar because of the limitations I set with your settings... but, just like others and you... I won't want a 600GB series... so I'm trying to find the right settings to get some older stuff that's getting tagged as not valid.
I did end up cranking mine up a tad because I was missing a bunch, especially if .265 wasn’t available. So set your “preferred” to a realistic .265 size, but then blow up the “maximum” size so it’ll still capture something if it’s the only option available. I never got into tdarr to re encode those files, but apparently that’s an option too. Just seems like a steep learning curve.
Bro ProMox is a Breeze! 😂 the only finicky thing is setting up high availability ( as if you mess up, you have to rebuild the entire proxmox os ) however it's more for companies or organizations for virtualizing your environments such as firewall and all your services, scale inside proxmox
I think it’s just muscle memory since I’ve been with truenas…since it was freenas 😂. I’m not opposed to giving it a shot again…as long as someone else makes this exact video for proxmox so I can follow it 😂😂😂
Hi there, just want wanna thank you for this video; hands down only video on youtube about TrueNAS where I could understand what is going on why; my home media server is now up and running within a day; thanks a lor
Hahahaha, glad I could help! If there is one thing that gets me with truenas it’s ALWAYS access control lists. As a home user, they really should make it easier to just be “open”…but it’s way easier now than it was 10 years ago so I’ll take it!
Great point, and we do. Our isp runs their lines on power poles here and we’re good for a multi day outage once a year when someone hits a pole, or a tree comes down. I’d just like to rest assured I will be able to watch red dawn as the world is crumbling around me, you know?
Amazing video, I just see that now, but currently I own the same setup that I buy 6 months ago. Good idea for the 4k inside your home network only, I think I'm gonna change my setup with only 1 radarr to 2. For the VPN, I use gluetun for only the containers that I want to go through this VPN.
This is a great video. I'm just getting into this stuff and the learning curve is steep! Just a quick question, how do you download like this without drawing the eye of your ISP? Wouldn't you have to have your system on a VPN or something so that your downloads arent noticed by the ISP? Thanks again!
With a https secure connection direct downloads from Usenet servers go unnoticed by your isp. Further, they only really “care” about torrenting when informed by a 3rd party snitch whose literal job it is to rat on people who aren’t behind a vpn if that makes any sense. Trust me, your isp doesn’t want to be bothered with that stuff either (unless maybe you have Comcast of time warner and it’s THEIR content 😂)
I’m learning sometimes you’ve got to give it a day or two as they update and replace distributions. Both are well supported, high functioning, and close enough though.
I once had multiple servers running but decided to consolidate everything into VMs, now running unraid on a 1700x then upgraded to 5800x and 64GB ram.... all is good I didnt go with intel because all their stupid P & E cores thing, I want to have full control and power of my CPU
Awesome video man, just what I was looking for, especially SABnzbd - how would you set up the paths (i.e. 'watched / download / completed etc)? Your Yottamaster storage, is not a NAS, just a standard USB-C cable? How does Truenas find/know about this? Apologies for the noob q's!
I set up my sab folders how plex likes to see them. Movies, music, tv. I then have one active download folder for temporary storage as sab is downloading, unpacking, reassembling the news articles into a real file again. Once it passes all those checks, your arrs will move the file to their final location (just follow the data management tab instructions in the video). As for the yottamaster, the usb-c interface is great. Just plug it in and truenas sees each drive, and it’s fully s.m.a.r.t. Capable. Universal Serial Bus wasn’t always what it is today. It’s a perfectly viable option now for mass storage communication.
Amazing video! How did you set your Quality and Profiles for your 4k content? I'm inclined to delete all quality profiles except for Ultra-HD. Also curious what you set your sizes to for 4k content. Like you, I'm not trying to eat up a ton of storage.
You should try AV1. The compression and quality are better. Compress it with Handbrake, I found the sweet spot at 28 compression. Oh good video, I'm new to TrueNAS Scale, way different the UNRAID. All i want is plex and storage movies. Im halfway of te video, hopefully you have a nvme cache drive for plex metadata setup.
I’ll look into the av1 thing for sure. I used to punish my 1060 with handbrake encodes for days at a time when I originally ripped my Blu-ray collection. I’d inmate things have gotten better there. As for the NVME, truenas doesn’t really benefit from them. I watched a pretty extensive test on someone’s channel that was really well done, I just can’t remember the name of it. If you can add more ram though…you can get those traditional nvme benefits there.
@RandysRandomHobbies I see. I run intel i9 14900, AORUS Master X z790, Corsaid DDR5 5600mhz 92gb of RAM 2 sticks, so if I need more RAM I can add more to max it at 128gb It's a simple setup. As you mentioned in your video, keeping the cost down to a minimum. What do you suggest to set up the NVME? It's a 2tb?
You could probably setup a write cache drive with it if you have a crazy fast internet connection or are doing large transfers to it, but from the tests I’ve seen, the gains aren’t earth shattering. I’d almost pull the nvme and use it in something else 😂
A great Video Randy, I have the ARRs setup on Ubuntu and Docker using Portainer to manage them. My storage server is on TrueNas Core. I am looking to move all the apps onto Trena's Scale, Good to see you have already done it. Have you setup plex on Trena's Scale? and if so did you use the iGPU or an external GPU?
Yessir. Plex is great, maintained, and frequently updated! Using the ipgu on this minisforum i5-13500 and it’s doing great. Even transcoding from 265 to 264 when needed.
I did an “upgrade” on an old server from freenas 11, to truenas core, to scale. I was puckered the entire time…but it went off without a hitch! Best of luck!!!
@@Randyisanerd Nice, you have walked the walk, I am about to start that now but I I'll still keep my files on a separate server, Truenas Core. The apps will live on what I am calling an application server (Truenas Scale) and it will be all NVME, no spinning hard drives.
Welp, it’s been 9 months of spinning these disks 24/7 and I haven’t had an issue 🤷♂️. Well that’s a lie. I pulled the wrong disk one time experimenting and it really didn’t like that, but a sudo pool clear command fixed that up right quick.
Yes sir. They list as sda through sde, click on each will show the serial numbers. I have a second set of disks I’m going to spin up in a bit to run a raidz2 for photos exclusively. I’ll let you know how those go as this box allows you to daisy chain two together on the same usb-c bus (10gb capable, running at 5gb each box) so it shouldn’t slow down either!
45:30 is what i came here for, that gives me my shared folder to drop my videos into. WHY the repository wiki whatever its called, says "just add your library and there you go, I cannot fathom
Could you make a tutorial now how to migrate from TrueCharts to TrueNAS for radarr, sonarr, lidarr etc? Now that TrueCharts is no longer supported for TrueNAS and these apps don't exist as TrueCharts?
@@Randyisanerd that would be awesome thanks! Myself, i I basically learned how to instal all my apps for true charts using host path… but now I can’t get the official apps to instal cause there seems to be more requirements for permissions and can’t seem to get radarr etc to find my media
Immich is great, just one thing is suspicios: one cannot export all the photos/videos in a batch. And I didn't find the way to access the media on the dataset as well.
I never looked into bulk export, but I’m sure the devs would love the feedback!Media is buried a few folders deep by user, so you can get it if something were to ever happen, but since it’s all distributed over a pile of folders it’s wouldn’t be easy or fast. I can look tomorrow and post the path to it if you need.
I did something wrong, Immich has been spinning up for 6 hrs ! was able to point all paths to mnt/hoastpath/subfloders in v23.10.2 no error logs. no shell output.. so I'm not sure where it's unhappy.! convenient. =(
It’s really over rated to be totally honest. If you have your quality settings reasonable, and have a good upscaling tv only the most discerning eyes will be able to tell. To me it’s like “lossless audio”…I’m too deaf to be able to tell the difference between a good 320 rip and a flac 🤷♂️
@RandysRandomHobbies thanks! I ended up using the custom profiles from TraSh's guides and worked well. Now I'm beating my head against the wall trying to figure out how to structure my media file folders between qBitorrent, my NAS and Emby... it's a mess
Don’t think too hard about it. You can be as OCD as you’d like, but the defaults will be picked up natively by Plex. I just add the .265 into the file name so I can tell from afar. I was a few weeks in before I realized I never set up season folders for my tv shows…I just moved on. Not worth the anxiety 😂
Sorry if this is a dumb question but i've been stuck for a week. I have everything running with SMB but i have no idea what to do for qbittorrent so that it is bound to my proton vpn, and i dont want the entire nas going through the vpn (i think, but i dont know, if i pay for proton is there a benefit to using it for the entire nas vs just qbittorrent?)? Idk if this is something you can make a video about or maybe link me to some guides that may help?
Please please please do a follow up on how to protect the *rr traffic with a vpn (mullvad etc..) and lock it down so it only uses that vpn connection while not disturbing the tailscale.
I'm struggling with the radarr root folder. The Media folder I created does show up in windows explorer with all the stuff that should be there but radarr doesn't find it so I cannot add it.
Hi Randy! Really liked your video. Do you happen to have a discord? I'd love to get someone on one help with setting up my truenas scale install. I've been running into some issues trying to set up my aar stack and usenet. Think you can help?
amazing video! did you have to set up access controls in tailscale? i set it up like you did but i can not connect from my phone at all and i think it may be because of access control settings on the admin console of tailscale.
@@Randyisanerd under "Advertise Routes" i have my local IP and subnet listed. then i have "Advertise Exit Node" and "Userspace" checked like you did in your video. if that's what you're talking about.
Not too bash you on the Storaxa thing but that campaign failure was due to Storaxa/KS/and all the backers. Anyone with a clear mindset saw this project is doomed from the beginning. No commercial company makes or can make anything with so low price. I was furious with them from the beginning. I hated that someone scams the homelab community.
Hindsight is so 20/20. I slapped the money down and didn’t even think about it again for over a year. But yeah…pretty damn clear looking back 😂. Oh well. I’ve spent more on less.
probably a dumb question, but how reliable is an external storage system connected via USB for 24x7 uptime? is there any meaningful advantage in going with more direct chipset/pci-e connections?
Not dumb at all. If you ask on reddit, there are a TON of purists that say it’s a terrible idea. With the advancements in connection speed and robustness of usb c…I’m not worried about a thing. I mean. I’m also not running ECC memory on this server. But, it’s all replaceable media (save for the photos which ill “snapshot”back up additionally to to fire safe occasionally)
Try putting 6 normal consumer grade hard drives connected with your motherboard sata port and raidx them all up and your could still have problems , WHY because if one drive spends a little long reading from the array it will confuse the system stop the full array , that why you have drive for raid systems .
I've been running a 4 bay from Orico over USB to a beelink mini pc running unraid for about 17 months now, not a single issue related to the enclosure or USB at all. As Randy said, it's the Reddit purists insisting there are issues with USB which have essentially all been squashed now, especially if you buy from someone half decent using branded USB controllers
Interesting takes here I agree Reddit/Truenas Forums are full of "No USB" and "You need ECC" I personally went for a small mATX case for now with ECC Ram but I am looking to extend this one with a USB Enclosure later on as well. Lets see how the opinion about this is in 1 year. Still I would at last mention this in a pinned comment or at the beginning of the video. Making educational videos on UA-cam and telling people to connect your HDDs via USB to your TrueNas is definitely not risk free.
great Video. i do have one problem. when connecting with Immich on my phone, it will connect to the server but fails on my password. and it is the right password.
should have setup prowlarr first then you don't have to set up nzb and all that other stuff. Prowlarr will automatically push and setup all your settings. in fact you don't have it working and set right from what i watched. FYI
I’m using the yottamaster 5bay usb-c. AliExpress shipping is crazy fast from the official yottamaster store (6 days and I’m on the east coast) they market it as the y-focus model. I’ll watch the video at 29:00 and reply again for the other bit
Ah ok. So for the “host”, that’s the IP of the server we’re setting up. That will be displayed on your truenas dashboard. Since all of these services run inside the truenas os, the IP will be the same for ALL of these services, just with a different port to communicate with their webGUIs. Does that make sense?
I haven’t had any real breaking changes on updates other than immich as it’s been developed, but they are super good at documentation so it been easy to work around. I literally had a version of freenas 9.something running on my basement for 7 years with zero updates until radarr no longer supported my old ass version of mono, and even then it still half worked. Yeah it’ll show you that there are newer versions of apps available, but everything will still work if you don’t update, for a very long time.
At this point we’re in a holding pattern until a docker path becomes available from ixsystems. Once that’s available we’ll be able to install ANY docker container and this OS is really going to take off (if it’s handled right)
Yeah truecharts pulled the plug on new installs a bit early after truenas announced a move to docker containers for their next official release. Kind of a bummer for people that are now stuck in the interim. This issue should go away in a few months time once everything is sorted with docker. I’ll do an updated walkthrough.
I have that 5 bay yottamaster like yours and tried it with proxmox , but proxmox uses the serial no / make for the mounting . but it look like the yottamaster reports all the drives to have the same serial no / make which crashes my server . Windows uses the uuid for mounting and most linux , but proxmox doesn't like that 5 bay.
I love the fit and finish of the yottamaster! I was able to get it to work in proxmox but you had to get the serial number for each drive and “pass through” in the command line, but man what a time consuming nightmare. Truenas really is the way to go for this use case. I hope this video help you at least a little! Only bit I want to figure out yet is installing home assistant as a VM, since the container version has limitations with basic things like the community store.
@@Randyisanerd I've just tried it under proxmox , the only problem with my mini pc is I've maxed it out , 64gb ram , 2 x 2tb nvme drives and 2 x 4tb SSDs, so would waste a full 2tb drive just for the boot. Looking at the drive is only used for boot so wondering if I could use a small usb hard-drive for that ?. When you say "had to get the serial number for each drive and “pass through” in the command line" do you mean the uuid because on mine it passes the same serial on of the first drive on all drives I think ?.
I have a feeling as I fill this thing out I’ll be headed for 64gb of ram here shortly too. I guess we could remove our WiFi/Bluetooth chips since we’re hardwired and put a small boot ssd in there right? Someone’s gotta make a short little small capacity 2230 ssd right?
@peteradshead2383 I just found a WD 256gb 2230 for $17.50…now you have me thinking. I could use the stock 1tb for a write cache or, or a vdev just for downloads until they finish and move to spinning disk storage or something…
Hahahahahaha sorry. Got burnt twice from kickstarter, on the only two things I’ve ever backed. All we can do now is spread the word on NOT doing business with them.
Excellent point I didn’t really cover! We stream outside the home a fair amount and love it. To do this you’ll have to forward port 32400 on your router (Plex default port unless you change it in setup), and that’s different for everyone depending on your router. First step is log in to your router (typically 192.168.1.1 admin password) and click around until you find advanced, port forwarding. Then you’ll define the port, and point it to your ip for your server with Plex on it. Once that’s setup there is a connection test section in Plex web that will let you know if it’s setup right 👍
So your plex is up and running normal in the house? When you go to the web app, settings on the top right, remote access on the left. What does it say? You should be able to test here and it should turn green and say “fully accessible outside your network” once that port is forwarded on your router.
So, here is the thing. Some news hosts will log your ip with requests, date, time. Others “claim” no logging. I’m not an expert there, but there are some great communities on reddit that go into great detail on stuff like this. R/usenet
i got my radarr, sonarr, prowlarr, jellyseer working now because of your in depth tutorial, many thanks. however i havent decided if i will be using usenet or just a vpn with socks5.
Yeah this model was short lived for some reason 🤷♂️ I want to say npb5, but then they came out with the other small form factor with dual 10g nics shortly after so I think they stopped pushing this one. I believe the new one even has the new iris xe igpu which is like twice as good.
I use Tailscale to connect with immich when I’m outside my network, I really don’t want to expose family photos to the internet no matter how safe it seems. I’m sure it’s the same steps and most likely “safe” enough, I just haven’t personally done it. Hope that helps.
i don't get what I'm doing wrong i follow your steps and everything never seems as easy as you make it to be, Prowlarr refuses to connect to anything, its all connection refused.
0/10 would not recommend proxmox with this usb enclosure. You have to go into the shell and rename each drive to have its unique serial number in the name, otherwise it freaks out and won’t let you “pass the drives through” to use them.
Timestamp 7:40 For TruenasCore, the apps user does not appear in the User or group drop down, does Core have this user/group or is there a different user which should be used? Or does it need to be migrated to Scale?
Most secure is to really hunker down and learn Linux permissions and setup proper users and groups and ACLs...but I suck at that no matter how hard I try. I'd rather limit my network access and have my server setup wide open like this so anything on my network can openly communicate with it. SMB is just a windows thing, so if you don't need that access you can skip that part.
Followed this but alas, I'm running into the same issue I'm running into everywhere with the arr stack. I can't see my storage in the root folder. Followed everything, have permissions wide open and still doesn't show up. I just see the container files. Any advice?
Can’t see it…from windows? Or can’t see it from the “storage configuration” while setting up the app? Make sure you have your media dataset defined, and then shared via SMB and UNIX. When you are in the datasets pane, select your media dataset, on the right side it’ll say roles, apps…make sure it says “this dataset is used by:” and all of your arrs are in there. If they are not, it’s a setting while configuring each arr app. Let me know!
@@Randyisanerd It was a stupid error on my part that I figured out! My interface is a bit different than what was on screen. When you're setting up now it asks where to put the app files and then you have to select to add additional storage to mount those files/give access. I've been trying for a week with linux servers and docker to connect storage with no avail, so when it happened here I was upset -- but a simple settings change and voila! All working. Thanks for this video -- it finally allowed me to get my homeserver up and running. Truenas for the win.

@@Randyisanerd I was able to get it running, except for adding the external storage- t would not run with it enabled. How do I access the photos on my computer? Are they only accessible through the web portal?
You CAN access them on a pc as files, but I highly recommend only doing so through a web portal from your newly running server!!! Files are located under several folders with searingly random file names under the user, but this is a pretty sophisticated database driven experience so really you should monitor/admire/delete through the web app of the server.
There were several “breaking changes” in the past 12 months. There are guides on how to backup and restore, but luckily I was late to the party and none of my updates have broken anything for me.
For SABnzbd, you set the host path and mount path to /Media but doing this then puts all the SAB files into the Media Folder along with Movies, TV, etc... but in your video I didn't see those files. Is there a way to have those files elsewhere so my Media folder is clean and only has like Movies, TV, Music, Audiobooks, etc...?
The host path is just the path that shows within navigation of the app if that makes sense. The sub folders “movies”, “tv shows” and “music” are all in there, and the arrr programs handle the renaming and moving to the proper folders.
@@Randyisanerd So within SABnzbd, I set the host path and in doing so, I believe it then created a bunch of support files and folders within my Media folder where it sits alongside Movies, TV, Music, etc..., my goal is to have a clean Media folder where I could have the ActiveDL and my other media without the support files from SABnzbd just like the way you have it. What is causing SAB to create those folders within my Media folder?
You got me there. I’ve never messed with jellyseerr, but I imagine it as a very similar fork of overseerr…so it should be about the same setup. I can’t look into it if you’re having trouble, just let me know!
so @ 32:10 you said tell it you want to do renaming. will that also change the torrent file or will it make a hardlink? I am trying to have mine set up to keep seeding once things are downloaded.
That, is a fantastic question. I honestly haven’t messed with deluge in a long time. I will experiment and find out though. My guess is that it’s going to ruin your seed as soon as it renames unless there is a copy function that I’m not aware of.
Thank you for your time and effort into such a project!! Once I’m not broke I’m donating to all!!
Love your software for auomating torrent downlaods and orginization. What would you suggest as an alternitive as TrueNAS scale has made it harder to configure my qbittorrent app with my VPN?
wow, cool
it looks like Homarr is tuck in a deploying state on my true nas scale latest edition.
For anyone coming here after July, TrueCharts is dead now.
Yeah, I heard about this on the WAN Show and was a bit disappointed because I had not swapped from True Nas Core until 2 days ago. Still loving True Nas Scale right now!
So… any alternatives? I heard truecharts plex is the only Plex which allows to stream video on the local network without having to transcode…
I was coming to the comments to mention this.
That is sad.. is there another way to install apps ?
I’m trying to find new ways to.. is installing docker the only option?
You mention that Plex needs Auth when there is no internet. Under Settings>Network, there is a setting to add IP Addresses of trusted clients without auth. Just make sure to reserve the IP's of those devices so they dont change. Hope that helps. Pretty good video, thanks
I’ll give it a try! There was some workaround I did a few years back that worked until I got bougie and setup plex “home” with different users and login codes.
Saw that and came down to the comments specifically to write this out. This is the solution I use for offline play and it works well.
I started building a trueNAS server a few days ago. This video explained everything to me perfectly. Thank you so much!
So glad I could help!
This video was so helpful in setting up an immich server, I just used the default stuff for the path and it's working really well especially with tailscale I can access my photos from anywhere, thank you so much❤
I wish I could upvote you 10 times. This has been one of the most helpful videos I've ever seen. Thank you thank you!
So glad I could help!
so did I... Got burnt by Storaxa aswell. Built my own server now. Absoultley brilliant video. The time it must have taken to make it. It is really appreciated. In 2 hours went from blank TrueNAs to a system that supasses my old system
I am saddened that so many of us got burnt, but so glad I could help contribute to your new awesome server in some way!
Thank you for the compliment! Glad I could help. Your English is great!
Thanks for the demo and info. I am in the same boat, I have a HP-DL360-G8, and I am starting to move and migrate my apps, to a slower and less power consuming device. Have a great day
This is wonderful! Have followed it step by step and got everything setup and working well! Thank you a lot!
Very nice! Everything someone needs to setup a useful and functioning home server!
Shoutout from Central PA (Lancaster) as well!
I rarely comment, but just wanted to say thank you for such a great walkthrough! I have the *arr stack + jellyfin running off a rpi4 and recently got the itch to upgrade. Ordering my parts and feel more confident after watching your video, thank you!
So glad I could help!
So clueless when it comes to this. I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know until I tried administering my first server… thank you so much for this.
Glad I could help! Definitely a learning curve, but all of these devs did a great job doing what they do!
Good video. Your the first person I've watched that explained the NewsReaders, Radarr, Sonarr & Prowlarr connections so I could understand them. Still somewhat confusing, but doable!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this video. All the current videos on UA-cam are so outdated that is difficult to follow. Yours are up to date, make sense and easy for me to follow.
I mean, I’m breaking the first rule of fight club…but it’s all for “education” right. Glad I could help!
This may be the best video ever regarding this kind of config, I've done a ton of guides in my life and I try to be as good as this video. Thanks!
Dang, thanks man! It’s only funny because my add is so bad, but sometimes allows me to hyper focus and make something useful 😂
Started watching this video about a month ago and it's still serving me.
Super useful info, Many thanks
So glad I could help!
Thanks for explaning this in such a way that a total noob can understand just started my homelab and felt way over my head with 3+ servers with proxmox, unraid, jellyfish, etc...
Glad I could help! Some of this info is super well documented, other stuff seems to follow fight club rules 😂
I had to redo all my aplications again on my Truenas Scale 23.10.s VM for a clean start with all apps, and this video was fantastic aid to help complete that so thank you for this video.
Now to tweak the ARR apps further , if only I could find that video or my notes....
Really appreciate this video. You have given me the inspiration I needed to finish my truenas build!
Glad I could help!
7:21 - setting apps as owner and group, 8:06 setting ACL and making root the dataset owner... ;) Jokes aside, very good work, thanks!
Great video that explained everything really well! Just built my new NAS and had all my downloads up and running in a couple of hours.
So glad I could help!
Agreed, sometimes truecharts let you customize too much to the point of WTF is going on here?!?!
I loved the video it has been a great walk thru on what is needed to get up and going with sab, sonarr, radarr and such. I don't use truenas. I have a asustor 8 bay using their built in software and most of my apps are running on a windows nuc but the app setup was extremely helpful since the apps (so far) are the same regardless of what os you run them on
Thanks, that’s good to know the setups are the same! This will undoubtedly help someone else.
really great video. very well explained, especially the the sabnzbd part and the news part (i went with eweka), and also covering the the entire Arr suite.
So glad I could help.
I don't normally comment on YT but wanted to say a big thank you to you for saying something in the plex section that made me realize where to adjust my pathing that allowed me to update my plex server that I had been fighting with for months now. Now to watch the rest of the video.
So glad I could help! Thank you for the kind words
@@Randyisanerd lol, yeah gpu is a lot faster now but cpu quality is still better, so some things I do in 15 minutes and some in 6 hours
I am new to TrueNAS but thank you for all your time and efforts in educating us all with your experience, time and wisdom. I am definitely going to subscribe and would recommend to you all aswell.
I love this! Thank you so much. 40 years as a nerd and I’ve finally found my niche 😂
Man, you are doing god's work here. Did you know your video is the only in-depth trunas video? Thank you!
Hahahahaha I love the name change btw 😂
I haven't followed this video but i hope to soon. Thank you for putting it together.
If you have any questions along the way let me know!
Just seems like a steep learning curve.
how did you install apps ? Since Truecharts has been deprecated
I installed everything through the native Scale app install page. No need for TrueCharts now
Bro ProMox is a Breeze!
I’m not opposed to giving it a shot again…as long as someone else makes this exact video for proxmox so I can follow it 😂😂😂
i just deleted truenas and tried this with proxmox or good word attepmt and ya i went right back to truenas that shit was like rocket science lmfao
"I loved your video. I appreciate the effort you put into it-great work! There’s a lot to learn from it."👍
Glad it was helpful!
This is exactly what I needed! Thank you so much!
Glad I could help! Let me know if you have any questions along the way!
Hi there, just want wanna thank you for this video; hands down only video on youtube about TrueNAS where I could understand what is going on why; my home media server is now up and running within a day; thanks a lor
So glad I could help! Have fun!!!
great video. Perst ACL was a revelation 👌
Hahahaha, glad I could help! If there is one thing that gets me with truenas it’s ALWAYS access control lists. As a home user, they really should make it easier to just be “open”…but it’s way easier now than it was 10 years ago so I’ll take it!
Why not have your ISP router hooked up to your UPS as well?
That way you don't lose internet when power outage happens, hence no need for Jellyfin.
Great point, and we do. Our isp runs their lines on power poles here and we’re good for a multi day outage once a year when someone hits a pole, or a tree comes down. I’d just like to rest assured I will be able to watch red dawn as the world is crumbling around me, you know?
Please make another setup video using just truenas apps, since the developers essentially killed using truecharts
Complete arr guide? Where is the part when you install and set up Whisparr?
Bahahahahahaha! Touché good sir. Not certain the wife would approve…but I’ll at least start the conversation now that you brought it up 😂
Amazing video, I just see that now, but currently I own the same setup that I buy 6 months ago.
Good idea for the 4k inside your home network only, I think I'm gonna change my setup with only 1 radarr to 2. For the VPN, I use gluetun for only the containers that I want to go through this VPN.
Awesome guide. if you arrange the timecodes so that the player would have chapters ,it would be awesome.
I’ll have to look into how to do that, I’m new to this 😂 thanks!
Got it! I was missing the 00:00 for it to work! 🙏 thank you!!!!! 🙏
@@Randyisanerd great info, thanks! Strange though, Radarr doesn't seem to be available from Truecharts.......only the Truenas version
I’m learning sometimes you’ve got to give it a day or two as they update and replace distributions. Both are well supported, high functioning, and close enough though.
I once had multiple servers running but decided to consolidate everything into VMs, now running unraid on a 1700x then upgraded to 5800x and 64GB ram.... all is good
I didnt go with intel because all their stupid P & E cores thing, I want to have full control and power of my CPU
I have mine set to 2.5 GB/hr preferred, and 8 GB/hr max now. It will find something now 99% of the time.
I’d almost pull the nvme and use it in something else 😂
as of late 2024 truecharts is no longer usable in the method mentioned here due to some incoming changes to truenas sacel moving to docker
I rarely comment... But, you deserve this comment. Good stuff. Set it up with some tweaks, but you were super helpful.
Nice! I just suck with user/group share permissions and every time I try to get fancy I break something 😂 let me know how it works out!!!
I've heard a lot about linux and usb-c enclosures not being dependable. I'd be curious to see how that's doing for you long term.
Welp, it’s been 9 months of spinning these disks 24/7 and I haven’t had an issue 🤷♂️. Well that’s a lie. I pulled the wrong disk one time experimenting and it really didn’t like that, but a sudo pool clear command fixed that up right quick.
Awesome! Thanks for the reply! Are you able to see the individual drives with serials, in truenas?
Hahahahahaha, if it’s not permissions issues with me, it’s always file paths! 😂 glad you’re up and running now!
Could you make a tutorial now how to migrate from TrueCharts to TrueNAS for radarr, sonarr, lidarr etc? Now that TrueCharts is no longer supported for TrueNAS and these apps don't exist as TrueCharts?
That’s a solid idea. I’ll work on that. Thank you.
Amazing stuff thank you for this!
Glad I could help!
Thank you. Very useful.
I did something wrong, Immich has been spinning up for 6 hrs !
was able to point all paths to mnt/hoastpath/subfloders in v23.10.2
no error logs. no shell output.. so I'm not sure where it's unhappy.! convenient. =(
Hmmmmm, mine said “deploying” for a while, but it was actually working. Does the web portal link take you anywhere, or does that timeout?
@@Randyisanerd correct:
Deploying.. web portal is not available . try #2 & App stuck on Deploying again. with 60% CPU use.
Still don't understand how to create a separate instance of Radarr, but otherwise good rundown.
I honestly don’t mess with torrents, but you’re not the first to ask. I can dig into it after the holiday weekend and see what I can figure out.
Thanks
Please please please do a follow up on how to protect the *rr traffic with a vpn (mullvad etc..) and lock it down so it only uses that vpn connection while not disturbing the tailscale.
I am prepping for a new whole home tplink setup with multiple access points. I’ll try to make VPN/wireguard a priority in that.
can you please make an updated guide as now Truechart is gone and docker is in. Thank you
You bet. It’s on my list here as soon as things calm down and a clear upgrade path exists!
@@Randyisanerd Really appreciate it Sir. Thank you
I'm struggling with the radarr root folder. The Media folder I created does show up in windows explorer with all the stuff that should be there but radarr doesn't find it so I cannot add it.
Saving to use later
Hi Randy! Really liked your video. Do you happen to have a discord? I'd love to get someone on one help with setting up my truenas scale install. I've been running into some issues trying to set up my aar stack and usenet. Think you can help?
Sorry man. No discord here, yet. What part are you struggling with though?
amazing video! did you have to set up access controls in tailscale? i set it up like you did but i can not connect from my phone at all and i think it may be because of access control settings on the admin console of tailscale.
Do you have the “subnet” and “exit node” tags under route settings checked?
DO you have Whisparr installed as well - that is some box of tissues!!
Hahahahahaha. I do not 🤣…currently
radarr profile custom formats score is not like priority. for custom formats, the higher the score the better.
Ah good catch! I set all mine to 0 so it still prefers the 265, but will fall back to any release available.
Great video!
Thank you!
probably a dumb question, but how reliable is an external storage system connected via USB for 24x7 uptime? is there any meaningful advantage in going with more direct chipset/pci-e connections?
Interesting takes here I agree Reddit/Truenas Forums are full of "No USB" and "You need ECC"
I personally went for a small mATX case for now with ECC Ram but I am looking to extend this one with a USB Enclosure later on as well.
That is super weird. Try adding another “user” in immich maybe 🤔 and see what happens there.
Great video if you set it to 1.75x
Oooof, that just makes my annoying voice worse! 😂
should have setup prowlarr first then you don't have to set up nzb and all that other stuff. Prowlarr will automatically push and setup all your settings. in fact you don't have it working and set right from what i watched. FYI
Interesting. I’ll have to look into that. I’ve only ever used it for the indexers. Thanks for the heads up!
Would you happen to have an invite to NZBGeek? Either way thanks for the great video!
I’ll check and reach out if I do.
Good Stuff Randy, Which model of Yottamaster is that? Thanks
I’m using the yottamaster 5bay usb-c. AliExpress shipping is crazy fast from the official yottamaster store (6 days and I’m on the east coast) they market it as the y-focus model. I’ll watch the video at 29:00 and reply again for the other bit
@@Randyisanerd No need I found what I was looking for thanks,
Ah ok. So for the “host”, that’s the IP of the server we’re setting up. That will be displayed on your truenas dashboard. Since all of these services run inside the truenas os, the IP will be the same for ALL of these services, just with a different port to communicate with their webGUIs. Does that make sense?
@@Randyisanerd Yes sir that is kind of what I was thinking and then figured out. Thank you again.
How did you setup your NFS shares, I have the SMB shoes working but need to now access the same dataset but for an NFS share
How is your experience Truecharts apps breaking regularly with biggerTrueNAS updates?
I haven’t had any real breaking changes on updates other than immich as it’s been developed, but they are super good at documentation so it been easy to work around. I literally had a version of freenas 9.something running on my basement for 7 years with zero updates until radarr no longer supported my old ass version of mono, and even then it still half worked. Yeah it’ll show you that there are newer versions of apps available, but everything will still work if you don’t update, for a very long time.
@@Randyisanerd aaa that's your solution 😉. I am a total opposite. Update script running every day. 😂
Truecharts repository doesn’t work. How else can I install apps I want?
At this point we’re in a holding pattern until a docker path becomes available from ixsystems. Once that’s available we’ll be able to install ANY docker container and this OS is really going to take off (if it’s handled right)
The Truecharts Apps wont install. I'm on the latest ver. Did something change?
@@Randyisanerd I'd love to know if that will work. TrueNAS doesn't need very much space for boot drive
I got in on the storaxa... thanks for reminding me :/
Hahahahahaha sorry. Got burnt twice from kickstarter, on the only two things I’ve ever backed. All we can do now is spread the word on NOT doing business with them.
@@Randyisanerd I’m about 2:2 for funded kickstarters. Of course the ones I really wanted to be funded ended up failing
You have any issues streaming outside your network with plex? aka, do you use it while away from home?
Excellent point I didn’t really cover! We stream outside the home a fair amount and love it. To do this you’ll have to forward port 32400 on your router (Plex default port unless you change it in setup), and that’s different for everyone depending on your router. First step is log in to your router (typically 192.168.1.1 admin password) and click around until you find advanced, port forwarding. Then you’ll define the port, and point it to your ip for your server with Plex on it. Once that’s setup there is a connection test section in Plex web that will let you know if it’s setup right 👍
I’m not 100% sure - maybe I missed it - but I’m getting the error from Plex to secure it using a ssl.
So your plex is up and running normal in the house? When you go to the web app, settings on the top right, remote access on the left. What does it say? You should be able to test here and it should turn green and say “fully accessible outside your network” once that port is forwarded on your router.
So what I noticed is, it wouldn’t allow me to do it until I clicked on the port button, then it magically worked. Forgot to update.
Glad to hear it resolved! I really should have covered that better!
Hi thank you so much for this tutorial, just one question is thundernews enough for privacy and to hide my real IP?
So, here is the thing. Some news hosts will log your ip with requests, date, time. Others “claim” no logging. I’m not an expert there, but there are some great communities on reddit that go into great detail on stuff like this. R/usenet
so for you, have you experienced any trouble using it for torrenting media with regards to privacy?
i got my radarr, sonarr, prowlarr, jellyseer working now because of your in depth tutorial, many thanks. however i havent decided if i will be using usenet or just a vpn with socks5.
Which model of that little PC did you get ? I’m trying to find it on Amazon and i didn’t see that exact model :)
Yeah this model was short lived for some reason 🤷♂️ I want to say npb5, but then they came out with the other small form factor with dual 10g nics shortly after so I think they stopped pushing this one. I believe the new one even has the new iris xe igpu which is like twice as good.
can you acces immish outside of the network ? like you're video with cloudflared and nextcloud ?
I use Tailscale to connect with immich when I’m outside my network, I really don’t want to expose family photos to the internet no matter how safe it seems. I’m sure it’s the same steps and most likely “safe” enough, I just haven’t personally done it. Hope that helps.
@@Randyisanerd thank you for the quick response.
i don't get what I'm doing wrong i follow your steps and everything never seems as easy as you make it to be, Prowlarr refuses to connect to anything, its all connection refused.
And you are copy/pasting in the corresponding API keys from your indexers and clicking the test button?
Can you show how to set it up on Proxmox?
0/10 would not recommend proxmox with this usb enclosure. You have to go into the shell and rename each drive to have its unique serial number in the name, otherwise it freaks out and won’t let you “pass the drives through” to use them.
Thanks!
Thank you thank you thank you !!!! Glad I could help you

For TruenasCore, the apps user does not appear in the User or group drop down, does Core have this user/group or is there a different user which should be used? Or does it need to be migrated to Scale?
If memory serves everything under core was owned by user and group “media”
@8:28 - what the more secure settings to have, or the Best Practice ?
So glad I could help, and that you’re up and running. It really is quite liberating!
So ... how do you reinstall in case of a catastrophic failure?
Depends on the failure mode. But assuming you’ve got snapshots you could rollback.
update 23.10.2 is out & fixes some isues
Nice! I’ve heard it fixes the issue with multiple instances not showing up right away. I’ll have to check it out. Thank you!

@@Randyisanerd Thanks, I will tinker with it.
@@Randyisanerd Sounds good. Thanks much for the help. Have you installed Qbittorrent? Could you make a video on that?
I have Immich installed on my Truenas Scale and the latest version is 1.105 which does not support mobile. How did you update to 1.9?
You only want to point the “additional storage” to this point. The rest can reside in the stock app ix-systems dataset.
Jellyseerr ?
