When Mozart died, Saint Peter welcomed him to Heaven and took him to meet God. As they slowly made their way, Mozart was thrilled to hear the heavenly sounds of what he thought was the most beautiful music he'd ever heard. It was Heaven's choir and orchestra. Thinking this, he met God and God said unto him: "Oh, Mozart! I am very pleased you're here. You will be in charge of the ensemble." And Mozart, a bit confused, responded: "I would be most honored for this position. But, do I deserve it? I mean, shouldn't Bach be the capellmeister?" And God looked at him and said: "I'm Bach."

Bach has been doing this for over 300 years! Ever since the "rediscovery" of his music by Mendelsohnn & Beethoven. ALL composers INCLUDING Mozart were inspired & continue to be by his music! What an irony that the people of Leipzig during his lifetime didn't realize WHO they had in their midst.

You'll notice that the text was used by Handel in the last chorus of Messiah (in English, of course: "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain.") Both Bach and Handel used the text in the same way, beginning with a chordal declamation and then proceeding with a fugue at the words "Blessing and honor, glory, and power . . . etc." ["Lob, und ehre, und preis, und gewalt . . ."] Someone, please correct my German. I can't find my dictionary right now--plus, spell check kept wanting to "correct" my German with English words!

I am so glad you love Bach as much as I do, and this splendid performance! But "Cantata 21" is not "his 21st". The numbers in the Bach catalogue are not chronological in Bach's life, but , the case of the cantatas, numbers assigned by the Bachgesellschaft in the 19th century as they incrementally published their now classic (if antiquated edition), i.e., ##1-10 were the ones people wanted to see published most/first. As the Bach catalog numbers (BWV) are the same, for cantatas, "Cantata, Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis, BWV 21" is how it is usually stated, or "Cantata 21". In the case of Beethoven symphonies, "Beethoven's 5th" really is the fifth one he wrote and published. Mozart's Köchel numbers are chronological, too, but not Bach BWV's. BWV 21, believe it or not, is fairly early, but so is BWV 150 (Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich). Bach did not number, or even publish, his cantatas.

Hi Mitch! Nice to coincidentally see you here, and this cantata is pretty new to me but it's already becoming one of my favourites! The permutation fugues in here (I think there are 3 of them!) are absolutely legendary!
@@Nooticus Hello there, Nooticus! This cantata has been a favorite of mine for many years; nothing tops it. I love all the fugal movements in this one!
@@MitchBoucherComposer Absolutely! The fugue at the end of the first part is a simple but excellent permutation fugue and the fugue at the end of the cantata has an extremely unique theme for Bach with a rising arpeggio!
@@lakkfatt2321 From wikipedia: 'Permutation fugue describes a type of composition (or technique of composition) in which elements of fugue and strict canon are combined.[39] Each voice enters in succession with the subject, each entry alternating between tonic and dominant, and each voice, having stated the initial subject, continues by stating two or more themes (or countersubjects), which must be conceived in correct invertible counterpoint.'
An utterly beautiful piece beautiflly performed, especially the S/B duet. During all the solos by Miealds, the meditative significance of the words seem to capture the focus of many members of the chor and instrumentalists. Perhaps they fully understand the deep meanings or just sense their significance. Either way, a very sensitive performance.
The last movement is actually at 36:38. The original score marks the fugal entries as solos, for good reason: it makes the entries as well as the melismatic countersubject more distinct, and produces a pleasing contrast for the entry of the choir.
I just discovered this Cantata yesterday by accident. What a blessing!! I am most struck by the dialog between the Soul and Jesus in parts 7 and 8. So tender and patient, sweetly insisting until the Soul is ready to allow light into her dark (bekummerte) soul. How often do I find myself groveling in self pity and need Jesus´ loving (not chiding) invitation to step out of the shadows, or the jaws (Schlund) of my distorted interpretations of situations I experience. A real lesson for life!!

That finale definitely puts a spring in your step.
@@davidswan3071 Got just 1 more for ya man. Here on YT enter århus mendelssohn overture to saint paul.' Be sure to watch the vid. Literally: spring in step. Felix was Bach's diehard promoter. Take my word for it that this do or die dedication to "bigger than he," namely JS Bach is the main cause of Mendelssohn's WAY too early death. Mission accompliahed tho! Human goodness does in deed exist. Duh... (NOT) in this year of 2021.
Thank you for an excellent performance! Truly a great service for the cultural advancement of humanity.
Infinitas gracias. Úrsula Werren
I love Dorothée Mields, her performances are always of the highest quality and here she is particularly inspired and inspiring. I would have loved to hear more complicity from Mr Kooj's part in the duett especially when she is "proposing" all the time. Lovely anyway.
Mields' Seufzer, Tränen aria was a revelation ... The intensity she put into it, amazing.
Magnifique !
Thank you so much for uploading this cantata; it is one of my favorites.
@@Nooticus what is a permutation fugue?
@@lakkfatt2321 From wikipedia:
'Permutation fugue describes a type of composition (or technique of composition) in which elements of fugue and strict canon are combined.[39] Each voice enters in succession with the subject, each entry alternating between tonic and dominant, and each voice, having stated the initial subject, continues by stating two or more themes (or countersubjects), which must be conceived in correct invertible counterpoint.'
Maravilla absoluta. Sublime Interpretación.
El coro final... Es Wow!!!
They made it a soprano solo-cantata :) + duett wih Peter Kooij.
Magnificent and completely beautiful
Altro grande capolavoro dell'arte di tutti i tempi.

Truly a journey from Crucifixion to Resurrection. Bach's whole life was a hymn of praise, service and devotion to his God.
Wonderful performance.

A miracle, incredible
I was not acquainted with this masterpiece. Thanks for the wonderful performance. Hoomeyow!!
Thank you so much.
I waited a long time for this. It was worth it.
Beautiful! Love the Handelesque finale!

Splendida esibizione
Bella sinfonia
Glad this was uploaded (brilliant performance), as it reminds me to do a score video dedicated solely to than grand final Fugue... one of Bach's best.
28:40 Sei nun wieder zufrieden is lovely, lovely, lovely! This is my favourite version.
Magnifique
Beautiful cantata!
'Beautiful' is far under reality... The BWV 21 is a masterpiece. ;-)

That was wonderful! Bravo!
