Great video. I have a couple of tips to add. I am a professional vegetable grower and usually grow seedlings in greenhouses by top watering, but this year decided to start a few things at home using my in-house setup. I have about 10 years of seed starting and seedling growing experience in the home using bottom watering method prior to that. Here are a few things I learned, hope it helps: 1. Bottom watering is not necessary for getting most seeds germinated because they are sitting within the top 1/2" of the seed starting mix. I would consider using a fogger nozzle or hose attachment with a mist setting to water in the top of the tray until the seedlings germinate. Too much bottom watering at the germination stage (depending on the vegetable) can lead to premature growth of fungi and other nastiness when trying to grow indoors using a no-hole bottom flat. I usually only start bottom watering once the seedlings have germed. 2. Bottom watering fails when the mix is not fully packed into the cells. If there are air gaps in the mix in the cell, the water will not properly wick its way up to the seedling. I just noticed this in a couple cells of my peppers I have been bottom watering and I lost them. Another reason that top watering the first couple of times helps with this issue is because it helps to tamp down the mix and fill in the gaps to allow bottom watering to work more effectively in the future. 3. A lot of inserts (the trays you put mix into and seed) don't totally fit in the no-hole bottom trays. Thus the cells in the middle of the tray sit down lower than the cells at the edges of the trays. If this is true for you, be sure to bottom water long enough that the cells at the edges are fully moist. Also if this is the case and you are using a heat mat to germinate and/or grow seedlings, then the cells in the middle of the tray which are at lower elevation will dry out more quickly. So keep an eye on those in the middle! Thanks again.
Thanks. Appreciated. 2 is key as it needs to be able to wick up. Check out my new Amazon Influencer's Shop. Anything you buy on Amazon helps The Rusted Garden when using my link. Ill be putting what I use in videos there for 2019. It is all set up by categories. Thanks. www.amazon.com/shop/garypilarchiktherustedgarden
I think I over watered my newly planted seeds in the tray. I dumped the excess water but the individual cells (the ones in the wrapping) are soaked. Could I wait to put the dome top on and let it dry out a little?
I’ve been using the Lea Valley self watering seeding trays for 5years and love it , no more babysitting seedling, only top up with water every 5 or six days. I also started using Rapid Rooters which fit the tray perfectly right down to the wicking mat, germination is very fast, I use Maxigrow at 250 ppm for my water in the bottom tray. When ready I transfer to 3” net pots in my Krakty self watering system in my greenhouse. Use two sets of 6 buckets, fed from 20 gallon bins with a float control bucket on each bin. Water level is maintained at 3” in the Buckets. Each nutrient bin has Large air stones on a timer to keep the nutrient oxygenated (hour on hour off). Toms and Cukes are heavy feeders and the 20 gal bins last about 8 days in the hot summer weather.
Thanks, Gary for the informative video. This will be my third year starting my own veg/flower plants, and this looks like a fool proof watering technique.
Yes. I agree; we spent a good amount of money on the dome systems. The damping off disease was the result more often than not. May I ask what the "support this channel" means?
And thank you for this video! Because I just misting, and the seed in a doom for about five weeks and not seeing the progress! So lm going with the bottom water method! Thank you so much I believe the problem not enough, water, and I’m stopping the doom! Thank you so much ! Your right! With everything !
This is an absolutely fantastic video. Thank you so much for posting it. I’m heading out of town and know that my seedlings will be watered properly with this method!

This is my biggest problem and I really struggle with it. Thank for the video Gary. On one hand I don't want to over water my plants. On the other, I don't want to wait until I see stress to water them. I have never left them in the water a full 20 to 30 minutes. I will try that. Thanks!

Great information. I have always wanted to get started growing super hot peppers and some rare peppers and other thing such as chives, kale and all that. My issue always has been over watering. I can germinate like there is no tomorrow but once I get seedlings to around an inch or two tall, good bye! This information may be just what the dr ordered for me. thanks!

Gary, do you also do bottom watering once you've potted up to 4-inch pots or larger? I just potted up 24 4-inch pots and I'm wondering if this process will still work for those. Thanks so much for you UA-cam videos....I watch them all the time and always learn something!

Hey Gary, just wanted to say thanks for all of the knowledge and practical methods you have shown in your videos. With your help I was able to grow pickled cucumbers, and a steady supply of roma and cherry tomatoes in containers from seed on my first attempt. One question though, I don't see you ever use perlite or vermiculite in your container mixes. A lot of people use it, just wondering in your experience, is it necessary for good drainage?
I, too, have domed mine and found fungus starting to grow now and then, but my starting area is only around 62*F and I think the dome makes it warmer for germination. And yes, mine is on a heat mat as well. Should I just eliminate the dome?
Thank you for posting this! I’ll remember to fill the bottom of my flat 1/4 to 1/3 of the way full, then pour out the standing water after 20 minutes. But what would you recommend for “wicking” with strings and a capillary mat?
Thanks Gary! Question for you. Do you do the watering process one time each time? about how long should it take for your tops to look moist again after you bottom water?
i got some of the self watering pad seed starter this year, because i can't catch them some times when they need water and i thought would try the soaker mats and see if they are a success or not.
yeah you can get them off of burpee seeds and amazon they have a mat that goes over a stand and it wicks the water from the try to the mat and under the seedlings.

I got some of those pod things. You know, early seedling things that come in a pack. You water them so they grow then put seeds in. First, the things the soil stuff goes into has no holes on the bottom. haha I guess I would make my own? Also, it seems you put your own soil in. Would you more recommend that over getting the pod things? I live in Maryland and planted some early. The first set, two things have little plants coming out. The other has seedlings coming from almost everyone. I will probably have to do all of them over.
I never used them sorry. Please Ring the Bell (next to subscribe) to get immediate real-time video notifications & Please check out The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop for all your gardening needs: www.therustedgarden.com
I just started seeds under my grow light. I pre-moistened the mixture and buried them fairly shallow as they're tiny seeds. I'm concerned that drying out on top will kill the seed. Does bottom watering still work well prior to the seed sprouting?
Sorry I just saw this. Bottom watering is all I do. Even if top dries, the roots have water. Please visit my seed and garden shop at www.therustedgarden.com for all your seeds, seed starting supplies and organic oils. Thanks!
Hello Gary say thank you for all the videos their huge help,, but I have question I have started some bell pepper and tomato and sweet banana peppers from seed indoors would and 4ft t12 daylight 6500k and daylight 5000k SPIRAL CFL be good to raise from seedling to about 12in tall? that's roughly 8,000 Lumens or would I need more?
Youre good. Keep the T12's like 1-2 inches above the seed starts. The most important time for light is germination and like 7-10 days that follow. Keep the lights about 2 inches or so from the plants as the grow and you will have healthy transplants. You dont have to turn on the spiral CFLS till you need them.
Good luck Please Ring the Bell (next to subscribe) to get immediate real-time video notifications & Please check out The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop for all your gardening needs: www.therustedgarden.com
Hey Gary! Great info! I think I overwatered my seedlinds. There is mold on the top soil and fly gnats. I put hydrogen peroxide (1-9) every time I saw the mold but it keeps coming back! Should I put a fun beside the plants and let it run to dry the soil up a bit?

I am starting seed starting for the first time. The only place I have that the room is an un-heated outbuilding. In march the average low temps is 38 with the average highs of 61. This jumps to 47 and 71 respectively….. I have heat mats, but do. I need a small space heater to help with the overall average temps?
Not for cool crops but if you are growing tomatoes and peppers, a space heater kicking on when it gets into 40's would be good. Earn 15% by becoming a Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop Affiliate. Very helpful. Question: I planted a variety of seeds last week, but used a dome. The beans sprouted right away and grew like crazy, about 3" tall in just a few days. Then the leaves withered and the plant became deformed, like melted wax. Is this because of the dome? I'm going to replant without it.
hope you still see comments on old videos.. but my question is a strange one. i have seed plug tray with 84 cells and i've put water in the tray underneath it to reach about 20% of the plug height... 2 hours and the dry surface plugs are still dry... what is the issue here? i don't get it
If you using peat moss it can be hydrophobic. I assume nothing is growing. If you know the water is hitting the mix, you might have to water can the top. Because my trays are not little 6 packs, but two larger ones, I simply left one end cell empty and that's where I fill the water. Then lift the corner to check level.
I dont use them. Minimum I would take it off as soon as they break ground. I've wondered if making a hole in the tray at the bottom and putting a plug in it would be a good way to remove the water? Pouring it out like that and there goes the basil tray.
I'm thinking one could get a good feel for how much water you need in the tray and when the time is up, lift a corner cell out and pool the remaining water and dab it up with a towel. But I'm just thinking out loud.

Is it normal for tomato seedlings to lean or droop a bit during the time under the lights? They're quite perky in the morning, I bottom water every 3 days or so with a light organic fertilizer, Biothrive
Gary Pilarchik they just needed a pick me up, I gave them an extra 10 minutes to soak up water/feed and they're ok. Plus I had just moved them into 3.5" pots. Thank you!
Gary what I do with seeds is to water the seed compost , then plant the seeds to the right depth, and then sieve compost over it. I then mist the sieved compost with a mister to wet it. I then mist it when the top starts becoming too dry (and you do not waste water). For a change I am using taking a bit of you advice (so if it goes pear shaped you will be blamed) and bought some carbongold seed compost which contains coir as it has meant to have a better germination rate. Not bad at £ 15.00 per 60 litre (20kg bag) (see www.carbongold.com/shop/seed-compost-60-litre-bag/).

Mine doesnt change color but when it starts shining i know water is all the way up. Though it introduces a lot of water into soil so is not the best solution for every plant, especially if it is going to stay wet like that for some time. My plug trays are ready for waatering every day after sitting in summer su for an entire day, but if its colder or plants are really small and absorb tiny amounts of water its not great Though i do it pretty much every time .. Simplest method what can you do

I have another question. What kind of dirt do you used. I know you make your own. But I been using Miracle grow, potting soil for flowers and vegetable garden
I have another question, how much water do you put into the bottom tray. I put maybe 1/4 to 1/2 . And wait for up to 1 hour and when go to dump the water. There no more water, but some of the cells are still dry at the top
Ok I am really a novice so please forgive silly question but my trays where I put the seeds don't have any holes at bottom... I am guessing for this method to work I need to make holes.? As they are now full.... how many holes per pot do I need to do? How big? Thanks for the video and help :)
They do need holes just one hole or more that wont get blocked. Water will seep in. Check out my new Amazon Influencer's Shop. Anything you buy on Amazon helps The Rusted Garden when using my link. I’m an anxious gardener. I see a sign of dryness on the top, and immediately go to water it. It’s caused me to have green algae forming on the tops of my seed starts. 😞 so, it shouldn’t be every day? But some lose water faster than others! Why hasn’t anyone invented clear seed start trays!!!???
You can water but letting the top dry helps. Pop out a cell when the top is dry. Youll see moisture is below it. Hello, I probably should have planted directly. I started some seeds in a cup. Is it okay to keep outside? I am thinking because of the air conditioning and I want to keep the soil at the correct temperature. Is it correct that I will have to water several times PER day since it is soooooo hot outside?
Your right they can bake in sun as the sun really heats them but put them where morning sun is and where sun tracks away come afternoon. Outside yes but with trays you can leave some water in bottom.
I realize this was six years ago. Jump to 2024. Simple, ignorant question. Do the individual cells have hole in the bottom? If not how does the water get into the cells. As you can tell, newbie here.
They all have holes and all you grow in should have holes. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Neem Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C Peppermint Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C Rosemary Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C

Here are a few things I learned, hope it helps:

I think I over watered my newly planted seeds in the tray. I dumped the excess water but the individual cells (the ones in the wrapping) are soaked. Could I wait to put the dome top on and let it dry out a little?
Hi Gary, This video is very helpful for me. I killed "many" seedling with over-watering. Got the basics. Thank You.

damn, sounds like you really have a effortless system. Im just starting out with flowers at the moment
Thank you for this! I’m a total newb and I’m clueless! This helped a lot!!
Just started bottom watering. No splash, no overwatering, works great!
+loby1120 Its the best isn't it. Just drain out excess.
Thanks, Gary for the informative video. This will be my third year starting my own veg/flower plants, and this looks like a fool proof watering technique.
I'm glad somebody(s) asked for this video. Good info. I've always been confused about whether or not to use a humidity dome.
Thanks!
Sure! If you cant regularly check on then a humidity dome would help. But if your checking on it regularly... I go without.
This is my biggest problem and I really struggle with it. Thank for the video Gary. On one hand I don't want to over water my plants. On the other, I don't want to wait until I see stress to water them. I have never left them in the water a full 20 to 30 minutes. I will try that. Thanks!
This method is what I have used for decades. It works.
I just started some seeds too! Can't wait for the new growing season. -Eric
Absolutely amazing information for a beginner like me. Thank you
Aji Nana i’m also just starting out! what are you growing?
I am curious if my fish tank pump will help me easily get the water out of the bottom without having to lift the trays. Thank you for your video!
I think that would be more work. With practice you can water without there being excess.

Great information. I have always wanted to get started growing super hot peppers and some rare peppers and other thing such as chives, kale and all that. My issue always has been over watering. I can germinate like there is no tomorrow but once I get seedlings to around an inch or two tall, good bye! This information may be just what the dr ordered for me. thanks!

How does adding water to hydrate the dry cells impact the already watered cells?
Also helpful :) love that you are detailed but also to the point
Thats my goal. Good luck this year

I, too, have domed mine and found fungus starting to grow now and then, but my starting area is only around 62*F and I think the dome makes it warmer for germination. And yes, mine is on a heat mat as well. Should I just eliminate the dome?
I dont like the domes. Unless you are going to be away and cant check the water, I say toss it.
Thank you for posting this! I’ll remember to fill the bottom of my flat 1/4 to 1/3 of the way full, then pour out the standing water after 20 minutes.
But what would you recommend for “wicking” with strings and a capillary mat?
The packed starting mix actually does it quite well. I just set them in.
What about seeds that are surface sown? Won't they dry out if I wait till the top soil layer is dry?
NOW I KNOW!!!!! You are a great resource
I never heard of that before. Please let me know how it goes. I am curious.
yeah you can get them off of burpee seeds and amazon they have a mat that goes over a stand and it wicks the water from the try to the mat and under the seedlings.
i will tell you how it goes in February when i start my seedlings.
Thank you. Your video helped me out a lot.

Gary Pilarchik wish I knew that before hand because I had both on since the day they popped up.. I started everything back on 1-15-15
thanks a TON! sooo tired of this damping off crap happening

Hey Gary!

Probably. Beans grow super fast and dont like the humidity.
I had a lot of seeds that didn't germinate. I'm going to give it another go without a dome.
I am using a heat mat, though.
Do you have any ideas or designs for a cheap do it yourself "self-watering" seed starter system?
I don't. I haven't seen anything around either.
Hydroponics prolly.
hope you still see comments on old videos..
but my question is a strange one. i have seed plug tray with 84 cells and i've put water in the tray underneath it to reach about 20% of the plug height... 2 hours and the dry surface plugs are still dry... what is the issue here? i don't get it
If you using peat moss it can be hydrophobic. I assume nothing is growing. If you know the water is hitting the mix, you might have to water can the top.

Gary I live in the Maryland zone 7 area. is it too early to start my seeds indoor over a heat mat and eventually converting to the lighting system you made?
I think I will. One less thing to store. Thanks.
Hi Gary, Having an uneven saturation, will the wet tray be overwatered in this case? I am venturing into bottom watering my month old desert rose seedlings.
Well dump the excess after 30 minutes or so. A fully saturated mix should be an issue. Sitting in water would be an issue over days.
Also how do you handle it when some cells dry out faster
I sometimes rotate the cells as watering is always even. You can spot water dry cells from the top too if needed.

Because my trays are not little 6 packs, but two larger ones, I simply left one end cell empty and that's where I fill the water. Then lift the corner to check level.
Effective and good tip. Sometimes they are also 1 big tray.
my mix wont wick up the water when bottom watering i am using pro mix seed starting mix will regular pro mix wick up water?

hello, thanks for the vid, but I came to find out if I can bottom water FROM THE FIRST TIME I SOW, thank you! : )
+LEORofYAHWEH Your welcome. You can bottom water from the start.
TheSajeffe
Correct 😉
I water in different container so i pull all plug trays out

Mine takes more than 20-30 min to get completely soaked is that normal??
Is it normal for tomato seedlings to lean or droop a bit during the time under the lights? They're quite perky in the morning, I bottom water every 3 days or so with a light organic fertilizer, Biothrive
Hmmm. I would need to see picture but they shouldn't. If they have been feed, I would just give them water for a while.
Is this watering method also better for flowering plants?
I use it for all plants.
Gary Pilarchik

how do you know how long to leave the water in the bottom for
Till the top of your starting mix gets a dark brown. But after 20 or 30 minutes dump the excess water out.
Mine doesnt change color but when it starts shining i know water is all the way up. Though it introduces a lot of water into soil so is not the best solution for every plant, especially if it is going to stay wet like that for some time. My plug trays are ready for waatering every day after sitting in summer su for an entire day, but if its colder or plants are really small and absorb tiny amounts of water its not great
Though i do it pretty much every time
.. Simplest method what can you do
Do you dump the water out , after 20-30 minutes later
I do if needed. But over the years,, you get good at not having excess water.

My tray have holes in them, how can I water?
Oh no. You can line them with foil or plastic. Or get a seal container and move plants back and forth.
Please visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com
I wrapped them in foil, but then they leaked so I the wrapped them in plastic wrap. SO far so good now. But the cells dont seem to be soaking up the water. I put in quite a bit not sure what could be the problem
But...but... I sprinkled a bunch of cinnamon on my cells to prevent fungus/gnats, so now I can't "see" how dry the cells are becoming!!!
Oh good point.

Good question, I’m using the same!

Yeah pre moisten before planting. Dried peat moss floats
