    I grow about 100 plants a year in various types of containers. Mostly scotch peppers. Last year I had 3 chocolate habanero seedlings left over and took your advice and planted all three in a 20 gallon grow bag. They started slowly but when the Central Texas heat hit them in late July and August they took off. Best producer I had. I am overwintering one of the plants that was among the three.

    This has been so helpful! I live in Shanghai, and jalapeños are nearly impossible to buy, so I started growing them indoors! I was able to find jalapeño seeds online here, and I began them on April 10th. Most of them have gotten their first sets of true leaves, and some of them are starting their second set. I have kept them under grow lights 16 hrs a day, with the heater set on 25 C in the room. I was able to buy a synthetic fertilizer at NPK 20-20-20, and I use 1/4 - 1/8 strength about once a week. They seem to dry out fairly quickly, so I've been needing to water them almost daily. They are pretty short and stocky, don't seem too leggy. Once they all get their second set of true leaves, I am going to transplant them into 3" terra cotta pots. Any tips or advice you can give to keep them growing healthy indoors, since I won't have access to an outdoor garden?

    • @TomRubicon5949
      @TomRubicon5949 2 роки тому

      Second this, I'm also using this guide and don't have an outdoor garden. As for me, Louis, I think I'll just be transplanting them to a regular size pot you would use for a (big) plant and keep that warm and in the sunshine...

    You’re my favourite gardening channel since last year when I started my first garden!
    I’m doing peppers indoor now, I have jiffy peat pellets with orange Habs,
    And those small jiffy pots with seed starting mix of jalapeños, and scotch bonnets!
    All the tomatos popped up , but the peppers are taking forever 🥴
    I hope they germinate! I panicked and planted about 40 plants just in case I didn’t do it right lol

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 роки тому

      Ah thanks so much. So they do take longer. And they like more heat than tomatoes to germinate. I do use a heat mat on them sometimes. But they can take 14-21 days.

    I'm always jealous of how healthy and big the seedlings of people with grow room/light setups look by planting time. Unfortunately I don't have the space.
    I thinking of trying outdoor greenhouse germination in mid-winter (July) this year. It's a greenhouse which has an extra bit of shelter under a covered balcony. If they don't work I can always go with my usual windowsill/heat mat method in August. I find if start tomatoes at the same time as capsicums/chillis the tomatoes are outgrowing the greenhouse before the last frost, so I'll not start those until late August at the earliest.
    I had a tomato volunteer that germinated this way last year and ended up being a great plant, which survived below 0 (C) in the greenhouse after germinating, I am hoping that capsicums (and eggplants) can too.

    Great advice! When will I have time to constantly bring them in and out daily if I'm at work all day lol. I just leave my pepper outside since I planted and it does well, every single seed grew(50 stems). And I grew it from my backyard soil just threw in a juice jug no plant food or nothing and it grew like wonders! My mom's garden same thing....she has beautiful garden every year. Just watered it and there goes all the veggies!

I just planted mine yesterday and wondered how long it would take to really start to sprout and bare peppers and exactly what to do for them whole their growing. This helps a bunch! Thanks for a very to the point and informative video. I just want to add something. I found that when starting them off in Coco peat, they have really well developed roots, which helps during acclimation on windy days, as they are well rooted and quite sturdy. Also, I know plastic is bad too, but I wouldn't recommend Styrofoam, as it releases toxins into the soil. Other than that, great video

    You should consider using a soil blocker to make your soil blocks instead of using cups/containers. You can still use the flats and bottom water. The soil blocks allow the plants roots to “air prune” and stay whatever size they are until they’re either transplanted into a large block or outside. You don’t stunt the plants growth and the roots don’t get bound up. Plus you don’t have to keep using those cups. You’ll have to label with popsicle sticks or label sticks though.

    I have shade covers for my plants so transplanting outside is really easy.

    Thanks for the info, tired of paying for pepper starts, I do most of my veggies from seed, but know they need to be started earlier than most plants, fingers crossed for this year!

    I'm starting chocolate Habenero's and I think Bird's eye Chillies, I harvested the seeds from the peppers that I plucked from plants at my local garden centre lol, such a thief! I heard that Habs were a bit difficult to grow but I will pay close attention and keep watching good vids like this and I guess it'll be a learning process, really hoping that they give me some fruits as I loved the flavour of the chocolate habs, I also love pickled Chillies and hot food where I can tasted the fresh chilli. I don't think my stomach likes that fact! I put the seeds in a bit late as its now may17th, about three days ago, and have them on a heat pad and when the sun has been out I have sat them out there to save electric. I can see after three days the seeds are beginning to plump up and there is the tiniest little white tip of a root pocking from some of them. Some of the seeds sat onto of the soil after I watered them . . . If all goes well I'm quitting my job and becoming a Chilli horticulturist as this is way to exciting!!
