@@hopeking3588 Peppers in Northern Mid-West can be planted late Winter/early Spring, it can be started indoors and later acclimated as Gary stated in his video.
I literally wanted to cry before I saw this video. I’m a newbie and the fails have been EPIC! Thank you so much! You have no idea how much this helps. I’ll report back!
I grow about 100 plants a year in various types of containers. Mostly scotch peppers. Last year I had 3 chocolate habanero seedlings left over and took your advice and planted all three in a 20 gallon grow bag. They started slowly but when the Central Texas heat hit them in late July and August they took off. Best producer I had. I am overwintering one of the plants that was among the three.
This is a great video. Thank you for sharing. Simple fundamentals like getting the plants acclimated to the sun is something I was never aware of and it explains a lot.
Glad to share and the acclimation is key. A lot of people try and rush through it. Sale for 10% off. Code 500K. Expires Friday 4/16. I'm so glad you made this video. I did get discouraged. My tomatoes and calendula sprouted quickly. Nothing happened with the peppers. I waited and waited. Then I decided to look on UA-cam for advice and your video popped up. Thanks
This is my second year watching this vid! Last year was my first garden and I never expected much but just from taking the knowledge from this vid my peppers grew so well! Unfortunatly I wasn’t prepared for the wildlife so they were always eaten before I got to them, but now I can work on that this year! Gardening is a journey 😂

Great video. You have no idea how many really bad ones are out there. Very informative. Been having a tough time getting cubanelles to germinate. Hopefully this year they’ll get started. Using a heat mat this time. 💕
I wish you the best of health, you are the best, i am from Romania(eastern of Europe). i've been cultivating on little balcony in smaller pots, but for the first time, i tried little hot peppers(Bird's eye from seeds) and only with you help i've learned always come true.I've got a lot of respect for you and I thank you for your spread your wealth of knowledge up to me.Thank you so much, Dan

This has been so helpful! I live in Shanghai, and jalapeños are nearly impossible to buy, so I started growing them indoors! I was able to find jalapeño seeds online here, and I began them on April 10th. Most of them have gotten their first sets of true leaves, and some of them are starting their second set. I have kept them under grow lights 16 hrs a day, with the heater set on 25 C in the room. I was able to buy a synthetic fertilizer at NPK 20-20-20, and I use 1/4 - 1/8 strength about once a week. They seem to dry out fairly quickly, so I've been needing to water them almost daily. They are pretty short and stocky, don't seem too leggy. Once they all get their second set of true leaves, I am going to transplant them into 3" terra cotta pots. Any tips or advice you can give to keep them growing healthy indoors, since I won't have access to an outdoor garden?
Second this, I'm also using this guide and don't have an outdoor garden. As for me, Louis, I think I'll just be transplanting them to a regular size pot you would use for a (big) plant and keep that warm and in the sunshine...
Was excellent information. I cut up a pepper and expirementally threw the seeds in some soil in a square clear storage container not thinking anything would happen. Weeks later I noticed about 20 little two leaf plants. So now I have no clue what to do until I found this video 😂. Thanks so much.

Great video! I'm not sure how long ago it was. But, you made a video where you used boiling water in your seed starting mix when seeding. I did that and have had NO gnats at ALL the last few years. The first year I started my own seeds it was horrible. LOL They were EVERYWHERE! I can't thank you enough for that tip back then. Always great info from you.
Yep boiling water is effective. I still do that at times. Those gnats do get everywhere. Please check out The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com

You’re my favourite gardening channel since last year when I started my first garden! I’m doing peppers indoor now, I have jiffy peat pellets with orange Habs, And those small jiffy pots with seed starting mix of jalapeños, and scotch bonnets! All the tomatos popped up , but the peppers are taking forever 🥴 I hope they germinate! I panicked and planted about 40 plants just in case I didn’t do it right lol
Ah thanks so much. So they do take longer. And they like more heat than tomatoes to germinate. I do use a heat mat on them sometimes. But they can take 14-21 days. Thank you for this video! I've been trying to harden off peppers that have been inside; it's really hot here (heat wave) and they can only handle about 15 mins of full sun, even after 4 days now. I wasn't sure if this was normal; most of the hardening off info I can find is about cold temps. This was really helpful.
I’ve seen a lot of (other peoples) videos where the grower uses garden soil, or potting soil. This usually leads to trouble with damping off and other disease/ insect issues. Thanks for highlighting seed starting mix as the way to go! I soak my hot pepper seeds in potassium nitrate ( saltpeter) solution to help them germinate earlier. Just one of many ways. Thanks for the helpful videos, I always learn something new!

I used a heating mat for the first time this year and my germination time was literally cut in half! I had tomatoes in 3 days, peppers and herbs a few days after that! Absolutely amazing product and a must have for any gardener. Oh, and they fit perfectly under the seed flat - this is what it looks like: amzn.to/2njUOYw

I'm a third year pepper grower in MN, I started some seeds this week. Last year I didn't even have grow lites to start, but ended up with a huge harvest. Yellow Trinidad Moruga scorpion in particular produced massive pods. Hoping to increase my yield with proper fertilization this season. Last year I over did it with the nitrogen.
Thanks! I’ve been trying to find someone who will explain everything to me about my peppers and growing them and haven’t had any luck until this popped up into my recommendations! I just planted mine yesterday and wondered how long it would take to really start to sprout and bare peppers and exactly what to do for them whole their growing. This helps a bunch! I planted so many that I honestly don’t need so I’ll be experimenting on some of the pepper sprouts to see what I like best from this video.

I'm always jealous of how healthy and big the seedlings of people with grow room/light setups look by planting time. Unfortunately I don't have the space. I thinking of trying outdoor greenhouse germination in mid-winter (July) this year. It's a greenhouse which has an extra bit of shelter under a covered balcony. If they don't work I can always go with my usual windowsill/heat mat method in August. I find if start tomatoes at the same time as capsicums/chillis the tomatoes are outgrowing the greenhouse before the last frost, so I'll not start those until late August at the earliest. I had a tomato volunteer that germinated this way last year and ended up being a great plant, which survived below 0 (C) in the greenhouse after germinating, I am hoping that capsicums (and eggplants) can too.
Great video Gary. Your principals and logic are sound and I have had great success with them. I like to zap the moistened Jiffy mix in the microwave and let it get good and hot to kill of the fungus gnats and fungus in general. I also use cinnamon on the top after planting seeds to ward off damping. You mentioned Neem. How much and how do you put this into your Jiffy mix?

Thanks for a very to the point and informative video. I just want to add something. I found that when starting them off in Coco peat, they have really well developed roots, which helps during acclimation on windy days, as they are well rooted and quite sturdy. Also, I know plastic is bad too, but I wouldn't recommend Styrofoam, as it releases toxins into the soil. Other than that, great video

This is mich and cold! When do I start peppers inside?
@@hopeking3588 Peppers in Northern Mid-West can be planted late Winter/early Spring, it can be started indoors and later acclimated as Gary stated in his video.
Thanks for taking the time to grow prop plants to really show the stages of growth. I haven't seen anyone do that on UA-cam before.
Youre welcome. I think that is the best way with visuals.

Thank you for making this so comprehensive! I am growing my first peppers and this video was very educational!
Thank you Gary! Long time watcher, from Baudette Minnesota USA
This is a great video. Thank you for sharing. Simple fundamentals like getting the plants acclimated to the sun is something I was never aware of and it explains a lot.
Glad to share and the acclimation is key. A lot of people try and rush through it.

Perfect timing then. Good luck!
Haha, same here, all my other seeds have sprouted except peppers and swiss chard.

Good luck.

You’re my favourite gardening channel since last year when I started my first garden!
I’m doing peppers indoor now, I have jiffy peat pellets with orange Habs,
And those small jiffy pots with seed starting mix of jalapeños, and scotch bonnets!
All the tomatos popped up , but the peppers are taking forever 🥴
I hope they germinate! I panicked and planted about 40 plants just in case I didn’t do it right lol
Ah thanks so much. So they do take longer. And they like more heat than tomatoes to germinate. I do use a heat mat on them sometimes. But they can take 14-21 days.

Yep. Bottom water and let top of soil surface dry. And heat really helps peppers the most.

Thanks for the whole process video just what i needed😍
I’ve seen a lot of (other peoples) videos where the grower uses garden soil, or potting soil. This usually leads to trouble with damping off and other disease/ insect issues. Thanks for highlighting seed starting mix as the way to go! I soak my hot pepper seeds in potassium nitrate ( saltpeter) solution to help them germinate earlier. Just one of many ways. Thanks for the helpful videos, I always learn something new!

FEARandLOATHING InNJ - if you don't have a heating mat, ( just like Gary mentioned) it will take much longer.

What do you think about the question; what happens if you start the seeds indoors too early?
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN hi. I'll taper off Nat question. What if we're doing indoor growing with HO lights. We won't mimic the sun and straight growth.
Great advice! When will I have time to constantly bring them in and out daily if I'm at work all day lol. I just leave my pepper outside since I planted and it does well, every single seed grew(50 stems). And I grew it from my backyard soil just threw in a juice jug no plant food or nothing and it grew like wonders! My mom's garden same thing....she has beautiful garden every year. Just watered it and there goes all the veggies!
I wish that worked for us. But we get deep freezes. A few flats and this method works well. We all grow differently in different zones.

How long do you microwave it for? I put in 1 or 2 teaspoons in a gallon of mix. There is a vid on it from like a week ago.
I have a 4 month old bell pepper and it's been both inside and outside in the past month or so, temperatures are getting better :)
Getting close.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) also got some younger peppers that have been mostly outside and have become pretty robust
Thank you for this knowledge

I have shade covers for my plants so transplanting outside is really easy.
Works great. I use that now too.

Hi...can you explain how you include neem oil in your potting mix?
Thank you for explaining the water problem
Yep.
What water prob are you talking about? Watering from bottom??
Please do a full video and acclimating your seedlings to the outdoors Gary?
I talk about it a lot as there is no set way. Slowly over a week. My best tip is when the just germinate and as the grow inside. Give them like 15 minutes of outdoor sun a couple times a week. Get them acclimated early and young.

Your video was very helpful on germination. Having problem with marigolds they came up but look like struggling do they need more light or more water?
Well light helps but water should be when needed. It usually isn't a watering issue. They like to have the soil dry out a bit. Always try some water soluble nitrogen. A little.

I'm about to start a couple hundred Cheyenne Spirit Echinacea. Adding Neem to my starter mix should improve the survival rate. Thanks I am so testing this great sounding idea.
Thank you Gary, for this guide very helpful.
