I add cinnamon to my seed starter mix and perlite as well as putting ontop the soil after planting my seeds. If I’m using wooden popsicle or bamboo sticks as labels, I’ll apply oil of oregano to them. Wooden plant labels are normally the first thing to get that white fuzzy mold in the pots. Oil of oregano is extremely anti fungal. Just moving the oil soaked wooden labels to each corner of the seedling pod is enough to treat the soil permanently for fungus.

A month ago I had some mold starting on the dirt in a portion of my flower seedlings. I took a small paintbrush and used hydrogen peroxide to paint the mold. It all disappeared. The next day a few mold specks were still visible, probably some I missed, so I painted them. The mold has not returned. 😊

Sprinkling cinnamon powder on top of the soil helps too. You can also spray a neem oil solution at the bottom of seed trays to prevent any insects crawling in from the bottom. Sterilising the germination mix with hot boiling water helps too. Of course, please wait a day before planting your seedlings 😄
Solarize your seed soils. It's easy, just put in a black bag and sit it in the sun for a couple days. Shake it everyday to make sure it's all evenly 'cooked'. Just remember to let it cool down for a few hours before using. This is great if you do like to reuse your soils. Alternatively, you could bake your soil as well, but why waste money when the sun is free!

This is my 3rd year gardening at home. I had so many great varieties of tomato seedlings that were doing well, then the white mold and dying started and I had no idea why. I definitely now know for next time. I ended up going to a local nursery and buying most of my starts for the garden! Will likely buy some heating mats for next seedlings, and a fan too!
My best tips include using cinnamon sprinkled generously on the soil where you are going to plant your seeds &/or using a tablespoon or even 2 of 3% peroxide per gallon of water when watering the seedlings. of course if you use less water adjust accordingly It must be added just before you water the plants since it will dissipate quickly. This keeps any fungus or pathogens from establishing in your tray or cells.
Great video! We lost power in the Houston area a few weeks ago during historic 20 degrees weather. I lost a lot of my seedlings... likely to damping off with it being 40 degrees and dark in my house 😩 Question... do you throw away the seed starting soil that has the fungus? I probably need to start a lot of seeds again.
Hey Jennifer, sorry to hear that. If you have the fungus, yes, it is 100% transferrable from the soil. I would not reuse for seedlings. Fine as a general potting mix though.
I’ve got similar symptoms trying to start my watermelons off to give them enough growing time but as it cold outside I have to start them indoors an then put them out as it gets warmer but they keep dying off but I think it’s due to the dry heat in the house I’ve tried a bottle to keep them moist but still die off any ideas ? 💡 thanks. 🙏
I got this this year being my first year from seeds. I didn't have a clue as to what was going on or what it was even called before I lost many plants. I later found a video like this one and added air with a small fan. My plants stopped dying off. But I lost about 30 plants first.
I take my seedlings out for sun daily. How many hours of direct sunlight do you suggest? I also water them every 3 days. Am i over watering? Ive been growing watermelons, canteloupe, broccoli, onion, green pepper, spinach & corn for about 1 month now
Two questions. I saw a video that said you can sprinkle cinnamon on your plants to keep those pesky little gnats away. Would you recommend this? Also, when watering, how much do you fill up the tray and how long do you leave at sit? I just can't get this right! Definitely, sand and cinnamon both work on fungus gnats! When I first water the seedling trays, you can't over water because the soil can only soak up so much...you can leave it for 2 hours or 6 hours.....it'll be the same level of moisture. Its the repeated watering AFTER the seeds are planted that cause the rot and the over watering issues..... ;-)

It definitely can Dalia. But not always. I've had trays of 72 and 98 cells where only a few got it. Once the seedlings get large enough, it doesn't affect them.

I'm in the middle of losing pepper seedlings. It started with just one last night but as of writing this I've already lost half of them. I think I've been overwatering them maybe, and have also been watering with a mist bottle from the top. Hopefully I can make adjustments using your tips and save the rest of the plants. Luckily the tomatoes are still going strong.

How do resolve the issue when it is happening in the garden bed I direct sowed my seeds they did great then dyed but I find it odd because my pumpkins are doing great climbing means cantaloupe anything in the melon family are dying off any advise

When starting seeds should I keep my light on 24/7 or should I do a time that’s on 12 off 12. Right now I’m using heat mates and light because my some of my plants started sprouting and some are about 3 inches tall. so I turn the light on them. Also I stay at a different property than I grow my plants and so I tend to I water my seeds I feel like. Some damped off but they had dry soil and when I gave them water they perked back up. Is this normal???

Can you start them outside in 80 degree heat? They stretch towards the windows. In a sunroom so hot and bright but once i put them outside theyre toast.
I sifted my new potting mix because it had a lot of large chunks of wood chips. Now I am concerned it is staying wet. I took the cover/dome off my tomatos flat as soon as they sprouted 4 days ago and removed the heat mat but the soil is till very wet. One seedling had no seed leaves so I pulled it. Two flats with pepper seeds have heat mats set at 80 degrees and the domes are very fogged up with droplets. Should I remove the domes for an hour or more a day to let the ceiling fan help dry them out? I am using full spectrum lights 6" above tomatoes or 8" above soil/sprouts.
You can. I do like the domes for initial sprouting....but if you have the fungus, obviously the high humidity will allow it to spread. How far along are the seedlings?
If I saw those pesky tiny flying things around my plants is it too late? I planted 3 days ago. For two days I saw these tiny flying things (I don't see them now) I also planted more seed this day. I was thinking wet soil, plenty of light and cool environment as I am doing this indoor. Now, I am being told 70-90° I saw Lids but I have no lids... I bought new trays but there were no lids. I corrected all these "new" ideas except the soil being wet... I did stop watering, I put a heater to raise the temperature and all changes and the planting took place at most... 3 days ago and today. But am I already too late? No seeds have germinated, however, I bought 2 5" tall lemon trees that by the time they got to me... turned into lime trees (I do not even like Limes - it is lemon trees used here in Florida to graft unto because of the heart root system and the reason I bought already germinated trees. Was the change to lime the seller did, a scam??? Amazon is being less than no help at all. Because of being in florida I decided to go for indoor dwarf plants. Now, I find out using an airconditioner will cause a problem. And if so, the plants lose and the air conditioner wins. I will move the plants outside.. live or die will be due to bad information from UA-cam and altered product from Amazon Sellers. So. I will have to go back to square one. I do not u understand why all those tiny bugs are not still flying around...
Hey Haniya, for seeding soil, its all about structure, rather than soil life or microbial activity. I can take brand new seeding soil, submerge it, subject it to anaerobic conditions for 2 weeks, rendering it fairly useless to re-use. However, I can take potting soil that is growing something, anything, especially things like cover crops or grasses that rejuvenate the structure and re-use that soil years and years later. So its all about how much structural "damage" as that soil been through in its lifetime that dictates its usage as a seeding mix.
I'm convinced my seed starting mix was infected. Everything was clean. 2 weeks before I'm to set out.my seedlings they're failing. The hybrid seeds are thriving. I've replanted some seeds. I always plant too many seeds, so hopefully I'll have enough to plant in the garden.
My brasicaes sp? (broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sproots) seedings are leggy. They came up great but now very leggy and limpy. I have them on a heat mat and grow light. What did I do wrong? I made my own seeding mix so maybe I should just buy a bag and start over. Sooner rather than later.
Hey Jacquie...take off the heat and give more light. Heat is great for germinating.....but for cool weather crops like Brassicas, they need to come off the heat after sprouting. :-)
since they are cold tolerant I took mine outside even tho it is still chilly and let nature take its course.. Somehow they all lived and by being outside they became stronger.. They were leggy before i took them outside and after a few weeks I planted them. They are doing fine in the garden.. I just threw a net over it to stop the birds from biting on them. I'm in zone 6a in NY
For damping off it won't affect it. As long as the materials are clean and all other practices are observed, I actually encourage you to use recycled materials!! :-)

Hi I am in india This is a failed apartment farmer😀 1) problems like seeds not sprouting after stratification. I just put them in a dome-less seed tray with cling film on top. Then i just place them on the window sill but the side i put it on gets no sunlight Is sunlight important because if it is I will have to place it in my balcony outside . Will that help? 2) i have tried watering from beneath before the seeds pop up but noone is able to tell how high do we keep water beneath or for how long do we dip it in that ? If we dont want fungus gnats we will have to remove it quickly right or water will seep to the top? 3) if at my seedlings grow they become leggy and flop down and die. Temp in india is 36/29 right now and monsoon around the corner Pls advise
This happens to me EVERY TIME!!! I’ve tried growing various veggies for over a year and the seeds germinate fine but when they’re about an inch to 1.5” tall the stem right where it meets the soil shrivels up and dies. But I’ve used many different types of soil and containers so I don’t see how this fungus could be in every single one of them???
Fungus isn't inherently bad....its often a sign of a healthy soil and certainly plants NEED fungal symbiotic relationships to grow properly. What was your soil source? If its not sterile, the other things won't stop fungus from appearing.
Great video! A couple of questions. I’m dealing with this as we speak. First time seedlinger. I thought they were limp because they needed more water 😭 My trays have no room to put water in from the bottom. Tips? Lift the whole thing out? Also, not all wilted. Do I just continue with those and leave the infected cells alone? Pull the healthy ones out and repot? Thanks!
You should always bottom water seedlings. Fill a 10 x 20 solid tray with water and set your cell trays in it. The water rises up through the drainage holes and go right to the roots. The top of the plant remains dry.
You gotta be e careful with that heat. Some plants can get leggy, also it can be difficult to harden off later. The green house I work at, the rule is cool and dry.
what if ur not doing many seeds but want to reuse seed starting mix/potting soil ? can i place it in an old baking pan about 1" deep and pop it in the oven for say about 20 minutes ?

Neem oil always works nice as an organic fungicide, can always spray anything used in there
Why say "oil of oregano" like a wanker? Just call it oregano oil.

I'll just apply boiled water to the soil then let it cool down and dry off before planting my seed
Sounds like the black bag method would add heat and increase unfriendly bacteria, etc. what temp does it need to get to and for how long?
Hydrogen peroxide works, too.
I always put an oscillating fan on my seedlings and that has really helped a lot

It can be anywhere from 4-10 hours really. Nothing too powerful, just a gentle breeze. Like they would experience on a normal day outside. :-)

I got this this year being my first year from seeds. I didn't have a clue as to what was going on or what it was even called before I lost many plants. I later found a video like this one and added air with a small fan. My plants stopped dying off. But I lost about 30 plants first.

I take my seedlings out for sun daily. How many hours of direct sunlight do you suggest? I also water them every 3 days. Am i over watering? Ive been growing watermelons, canteloupe, broccoli, onion, green pepper, spinach & corn for about 1 month now
Two questions. I saw a video that said you can sprinkle cinnamon on your plants to keep those pesky little gnats away. Would you recommend this? Also, when watering, how much do you fill up the tray and how long do you leave at sit? I just can't get this right! I think I over water, my plants will be damp for 4 days in a row and I'm thinking geez aren't I supposed to water every other day. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us! 🤗
Definitely, sand and cinnamon both work on fungus gnats! When I first water the seedling trays, you can't over water because the soil can only soak up so much...you can leave it for 2 hours or 6 hours.....it'll be the same level of moisture. Its the repeated watering AFTER the seeds are planted that cause the rot and the over watering issues..... ;-)

It definitely can Dalia. But not always. I've had trays of 72 and 98 cells where only a few got it. Once the seedlings get large enough, it doesn't affect them.

I'm in the middle of losing pepper seedlings. It started with just one last night but as of writing this I've already lost half of them. I think I've been overwatering them maybe, and have also been watering with a mist bottle from the top. Hopefully I can make adjustments using your tips and save the rest of the plants. Luckily the tomatoes are still going strong.
Sorry to hear that! Yeah, I only water my seedlings maybe once a week....that's it. They can drown super easy when young...

How do resolve the issue when it is happening in the garden bed I direct sowed my seeds they did great then dyed but I find it odd because my pumpkins are doing great climbing means cantaloupe anything in the melon family are dying off any advise

When starting seeds should I keep my light on 24/7 or should I do a time that’s on 12 off 12. Right now I’m using heat mates and light because my some of my plants started sprouting and some are about 3 inches tall. so I turn the light on them. Also I stay at a different property than I grow my plants and so I tend to I water my seeds I feel like. Some damped off but they had dry soil and when I gave them water they perked back up. Is this normal???

Definitely Keith....I suspect that with mine as well. The dome comes off when the true leaves appear (1-2 weeks after germination normally).

Can you start them outside in 80 degree heat? They stretch towards the windows. In a sunroom so hot and bright but once i put them outside theyre toast.
I sifted my new potting mix because it had a lot of large chunks of wood chips. Now I am concerned it is staying wet. I took the cover/dome off my tomatos flat as soon as they sprouted 4 days ago and removed the heat mat but the soil is till very wet. One seedling had no seed leaves so I pulled it. Two flats with pepper seeds have heat mats set at 80 degrees and the domes are very fogged up with droplets. Should I remove the domes for an hour or more a day to let the ceiling fan help dry them out?
I am using full spectrum lights 6" above tomatoes or 8" above soil/sprouts.
You can. I do like the domes for initial sprouting....but if you have the fungus, obviously the high humidity will allow it to spread. How far along are the seedlings?

If I saw those pesky tiny flying things around my plants is it too late? I planted 3 days ago. For two days I saw these tiny flying things (I don't see them now) I also planted more seed this day. I was thinking wet soil, plenty of light and cool environment as I am doing this indoor. Now, I am being told 70-90° I saw Lids but I have no lids... I bought new trays but there were no lids. I corrected all these "new" ideas except the soil being wet... I did stop watering, I put a heater to raise the temperature and all changes and the planting took place at most... 3 days ago and today. But am I already too late? No seeds have germinated, however, I bought 2 5" tall lemon trees that by the time they got to me... turned into lime trees (I do not even like Limes - it is lemon trees used here in Florida to graft unto because of the heart root system and the reason I bought already germinated trees. Was the change to lime the seller did, a scam??? Amazon is being less than no help at all. Because of being in florida I decided to go for indoor dwarf plants. Now, I find out using an airconditioner will cause a problem. And if so, the plants lose and the air conditioner wins. I will move the plants outside.. live or die will be due to bad information from UA-cam and altered product from Amazon Sellers. So. I will have to go back to square one. I do not u understand why all those tiny bugs are not still flying around...

Hey Haniya, for seeding soil, its all about structure, rather than soil life or microbial activity. I can take brand new seeding soil, submerge it, subject it to anaerobic conditions for 2 weeks, rendering it fairly useless to re-use. However, I can take potting soil that is growing something, anything, especially things like cover crops or grasses that rejuvenate the structure and re-use that soil years and years later. So its all about how much structural "damage" as that soil been through in its lifetime that dictates its usage as a seeding mix.

I'm convinced my seed starting mix was infected. Everything was clean. 2 weeks before I'm to set out.my seedlings they're failing. The hybrid seeds are thriving. I've replanted some seeds. I always plant too many seeds, so hopefully I'll have enough to plant in the garden.
My brasicaes sp? (broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sproots) seedings are leggy. They came up great but now very leggy and limpy. I have them on a heat mat and grow light. What did I do wrong? I made my own seeding mix so maybe I should just buy a bag and start over. Sooner rather than later.
Hey Jacquie...take off the heat and give more light. Heat is great for germinating.....but for cool weather crops like Brassicas, they need to come off the heat after sprouting. :-)
You need to move them closer to the light and remove the heat mat.

since they are cold tolerant I took mine outside even tho it is still chilly and let nature take its course.. Somehow they all lived and by being outside they became stronger.. They were leggy before i took them outside and after a few weeks I planted them. They are doing fine in the garden.. I just threw a net over it to stop the birds from biting on them. I'm in zone 6a in NY

How important is it to use seed containers meant for that purpose? Would it be bad to use other free materials?
For damping off it won't affect it. As long as the materials are clean and all other practices are observed, I actually encourage you to use recycled materials!! :-)

1) problems like seeds not sprouting after stratification.
I just put them in a dome-less seed tray with cling film on top.
Then i just place them on the window sill but the side i put it on gets no sunlight
Is sunlight important because if it is I will have to place it in my balcony outside .

2) i have tried watering from beneath before the seeds pop up but noone is able to tell how high do we keep water beneath or for how long do we dip it in that ?
If we dont want fungus gnats we will have to remove it quickly right or water will seep to the top?
3) if at my seedlings grow they become leggy and flop down and die.

This happens to me EVERY TIME!!! I’ve tried growing various veggies for over a year and the seeds germinate fine but when they’re about an inch to 1.5” tall the stem right where it meets the soil shrivels up and dies.
But I’ve used many different types of soil and containers so I don’t see how this fungus could be in every single one of them???
Are you keeping them too warm AFTER germination?
I did everything you said and still have a layer of fungus growing across the top of my soil! I’m so mad!
Fungus isn't inherently bad....its often a sign of a healthy soil and certainly plants NEED fungal symbiotic relationships to grow properly. What was your soil source? If its not sterile, the other things won't stop fungus from appearing.
Great video! A couple of questions. I’m dealing with this as we speak. First time seedlinger. I thought they were limp because they needed more water 😭 My trays have no room to put water in from the bottom. Tips? Lift the whole thing out? Also, not all wilted. Do I just continue with those and leave the infected cells alone? Pull the healthy ones out and repot? Thanks!
You should always bottom water seedlings. Fill a 10 x 20 solid tray with water and set your cell trays in it. The water rises up through the drainage holes and go right to the roots. The top of the plant remains dry.
And yes, pull out the healthy ones and discard the soil from the bad ones.

You gotta be e careful with that heat. Some plants can get leggy, also it can be difficult to harden off later. The green house I work at, the rule is cool and dry.
what if ur not doing many seeds but want to reuse seed starting mix/potting soil ? can i place it in an old baking pan about 1" deep and pop it in the oven for say about 20 minutes ?
