Hi growveg, I’m 16 nearly 17 and I have 26 tomatoes growing in pots on my desk lol. I am growing : Indigo blue, Gardener’s Delight, Oxheart, Goldene Konigin, Moneymaker, Black Krim and Marmande.
@Cyclopse I watched the program Jamie at home as I am wanting to be a chef when I get older and the convince of grabbing fresh produce got me into gardening, what got you into gardening
Serena like watching this guy but thstvtom plant only had two leaves and not a second set of true leaves when he translated it. But hes full.of life and enjoyable to watch..
When I transplant my seedlings, I make the divot as soon as I've filled the cell pack with soil and BEFORE I separate the seedlings. I can get about 15-18 transplanted in a minute this way. Love your videos, Ben!
I'm just getting ready to transplant over 350 seedlings and feel a lot more confident after watching your video. When looking for gardening info, I like to search for them on your channel first because you explain things so well and your demonstrations are very helpful. Thank you so much!
You're right about tomatoes loving the deeper planting for stability! I had tons of leggy tomatoes so I fearfully up-potted them and buried a good 75% of their stem. A few fell over and looked like they wouldn't make it but within a few hours they are all thriving and look like nice, sturdy little plants. Love your energy and positivity!
I hope this will work with my leggy looking lettuce and pak choi. Think I got too excited and planted them a bit early. The overcast weather of late hasn't been too helpful.
Fabulous video. As I do not have a greenhouse and the ambient moisture one provides, there are two things I do differently: 1.) Looking toward separating seedlings, I sow the seeds somewhat more sparsely to begin with and wait for the first set of true leaves to pot them up into larger cells or containers. 2.) I remove them from the original container on top of a plastic sheet and separate them out onto that sheet and cover them with a second sheet of plastic. This keeps my seedling and especially their roots from drying out. I can gradually turn back the top sheet of plastic as I progress through completing my task of potting up.
If there's a better garden youtube channel, I haven't seen it. I love how you capture me at 38 with a not patronising kids TV vibe. Keep up the great work.
Ben is the man! I have learned so much during the time these videos are viewed. Also, learned little tricks and have used these techniques. Please continue these videos. Thank you so much. Appreciate your time.
My goodness I’ve only seen 2 videos so far but I can say this is the best gardening channel I have ever come across on UA-cam! I am so excited to watch and learn more!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!.... am an absolute beginner and have been trawling videos which don't show you anything beyond 'sowing' the seeds and getting to germination point. I just needed to 'see' how it's possible to transplant the seedlings when they are so delicate. In a way, I do understand that it's not exactly rocket science - you really do just have to be super careful and have everything prepared and to hand; but if you've never seen it done - a demonstration like this is worth a thousand words! Thank you again, and I will be subscribing!
Some of these tips SEEM obvious, but to the beginner - we might never have thought of them! Thank you for this video, super informative! Need to transplant some seedlings this bank holiday weekend, and am looking forward to them getting nice and strong thanks to your tips (if I adhere to them correctly 😂).
You're lucky. I had to learn with books after we bought our first home in the 90s. Not the same. A good video, where you can see a plant in all its stages, makes for faster learning. Best of luck with your garden.
I’m just starting out with growing my own veggies in my concrete garden so mostly in pots. Your videos have been so flippin helpful, I’m transplanting my first seedlings today! Thank you!
Ben! Your new book has just arrived! It's brilliant! The Sky's The Limit and Crate Expectations has given me some great ideas on how I might transform our small roof terrace. *Everybody buy it now!* Haha.
Got the garden planner and I absolutely love it! I’m looking forward to putting my improvement recommendations in and seeing how the garden planning tool improves! :)
I am in Australia and my tomato seeds are ready to transplant. This video is very helpful, so wish me luck tomorrow, when I start my task. I love the idea of getting everything ready before you start.
I'm in zone 5 Canada and only use the winter sowing method no grow lights. I'm actually still planting out seeds. Great advice about how to handle the seedlings by the leaves, I've always struggled with this part. Thanks.
Ben you are so efficient with your 1 minute time challenge - I haven't got the room in my poly tunnel for a table and chair, so my back aches bending over on the bench! This year i didn't put anything straight in the ground and i think growing from seed in the tunnel has been far better! Thanks.
Hi Ben, great tip about putting the compost into a lidded plastic container, I will be doing that when I start transplanting. All a bit up in the air at the moment, no greenhouse and raised veggie bed dismantled whilst studio is being built. Only a couple of weeks to go and I should be able to get it up and running again.
Brilliant - you must be so excited about getting up and running. There's so much that can be started in late spring, so it's a great time to get stuck back in.
Feel sorry for you guys, T shirt weather here on the South coast UK the last few days, still a bit chilly in the mornings but lots of seedlings breaking out. And the Daffodils are in bloom too :)
I love your greenhouse! Most people can't afford an all singing, all dancing, brand new, big set-up. There is a certain Heath Robinson charm about yours 👍
The greenhouse looks great. I have a small polytunnel at present and I will be looking to build something a little more sturdy soon. Great video again. Keep up the good work!
Hmmm..my seed is not good. It takes time to sprout. But I dont give up....I still work on it. I will wait your next video. Wonder...could you grow a marygold flower 😍✌️

I'm just in the process of building my own greenhouse (with reclaimed and bought materials), but some lettuce I had starting on our kitchen window sill were looking a bit pail so I pricked some out today using your advice. I'm not too fussed if they don't make it (I'm still very early in the learning stages), but I'm very excited to get my greenhouse built so I can dedicate more space to raising seedlings and getting a better start to my garden.
Yesterday I was in B&Q . I noticed they'd starting selling seed trays moulded from bamboo and rice !!! .....I'm not kidding! They looked very robust and the manufacturer reckoned they might last about 5 years. I couldn't see any signs of module trays as yet , but hopefully they will follow at some point . I'm so pleased to see this move away from plastics that I'm letting everyone know .

Hi Ben another great video, do you prefer the soil to be wet /damp or dry when removing seedling for transplanting , I'm a spoon and old bent ends of a fork man me , the fork helps seperate some seed lings , thanks ,G
I prefer the soil slightly damp, but not recently watered. That way the seedlings aren't stressed but the soil isn't too heavy and clingy around the seedlings to make separating them tricky.
Hi very nice greenhouse is it glass or plastic it looks very big. So you can grow lots of vegetables. I am buying plastic greenhouse very soon. Thank you for good information.
I loved your presentation! I also like your glasses. However, last time I checked, the spring equinox was March 20, so spring hasn't sprung, unless it's somehow different in England... You people seem to like doing your own thing ;-)
Thanks for sharing this video. Which seedlings I can’t transplant? I mean the list of plant seedlings are too delicate to transplant? Please let me know. This video is an eye opener for me. Thank you again.
I think home-made biodegradable pots - using materials such as toilet roll tubes/loo roll centres and newspaper are great, but they need to be sat quite close together so they don't fall apart. But they are free and eco-friendly. But generally I think well-made plastic pots and module trays (not like the ones I have!) are great, because they are fuss free, very easy to use and can last many, many years.
My miracle grow potting mix was infected with gnat eggs.. everything is ruined!! I plucked out all my tiny lil seedlings. trying to save them in paper towels. buying nematodes and distilled water to feed after full soil sterilization. This year is awful!
