What a great series. Such timeless principles. I'm doing a reset in my home by decluttering in every room. It's so freeing. I can think so much more clearly I will be watching these periodically to refresh. Thank you, Jill and Tawra!
This is exactly what I needed to hear! I am that mom that saves the school papers and I asked my daughter to clean her room and I can see it's too much, bcs she has the overload of too many toys! Thanks for the inspiration I will be singing your song as We work throw our toys. 👏🏻👏🏻 thanks for speaking the Truth! 👍🏻
Me and my mum are the total opposite I'm the one wanting to save everything and my mum wants me to get rid of a lot of my things, I just found it funny how it's not always the parents that want to keep everything sometimes it's the opposite way round like in my case
I watched this before and it became a favorite for me. One thing I did is organize clothes in the closet to see what is not being worn (used the backward hanger method) but I always forget to cull the dressers too. So I had a bunch of red dot stickers leftover from a yard sale and used them to put on the labels of all the foldable clothes.Come spring and again in the late fall, I will go through the drawers and see what still has the sticker. Any neglected items will be culled out and donated, making room for clothes that fit as he grows. Also, with his toys, for years we have donated unwanted toys to the family homeless shelters. So for every new one he gets (he is 13), he has to put one in the donation box. I also removed his toy box, and what toys he does have are display on shelves. The toy box had became a catch-all for old school papers, candy wrappers, dirty and clean clothes...making it hard to find the toys and keep his room tidy. Now the toy box sits in the corner of the garage and once it is full of toys, we take them to the shelters, leaving the toybox ready for another collection.
I have a good tip for kids artwork, etc. (your kids, grandkids, neighbors kids etc.) I assign each child one of my kitchen cupboards. They get to choose one of their papers to put on the INSIDE of their assigned kitchen cabinet door. I tell them that every time I go in their to get a glass or plate or whatever I get to look at your paper. Then when they come home with a new paper or artwork, they get to choose which one to take down to put up the new one. It also teaches them to not get attached to their stuff. The best part is my refrigerator is not full of kids artwork and I can display their special works without making my house looking cluttered. If you have many cupboards and few kids let them have more than one cupboard.
my son and his 4 year old daughter just returned from China and are living with us. Very small house so not a lot of room for toys. She loves doll houses and we go to the thrift store and she can pick out 2 toys. But she has to go through her toys at home and return 2 toys to get 2 new ones. Now when she wants to go and pick new ones she says I have 2 here to take back for someone else to have fun with so can I get 2 new ones. Works great and not a lot of useless clutter. She even tells the workers there if they suggest something "no thanks it is too big for our house" they think she is so cute to know what is suitable and what isn't.
Omg!! I needed to hear this 😣 I been battling with clutter and I can't take it no more 😖 is true is mentally stressing 💯 Everything got out of control....I'm getting rid of half of my house for sure....holding on to things when little is one of the biggest problems, peppers, books, toys omg 😕 my kids have a lot of toys. Is true what she said: they loose respect for them...I will organize my home 👏 thank you I needed this motivation.
Tawra n Jill you both have point I'm only one person in my household n I have ten coffee cups I used to have 6 plates now I only have 2 plates n two bowls n cut way down on Silverware only have two forks, spoons etc thanks to you both you help me Thanks You!!😄🤗🌷👧🏻
Love love this video!! Thank you!! I am cleaning and getting rid of everything!! Is affecting my mood everyday to see my closet full of clothes everywhere that I no longer use
Love this series... this one about kids stuff - this is what I did with my daughter when she was little. Her toys went back in the box and was stored on the top shelf in her closet. If she wanted to play with something I took it down for her. She was allowed two things at a time, when she was done with them they went back up on the shelf. There was no time limit - if she was bored with something after 1/2 hour, we put it up. Now my great grandson - his toys were all over the the living room and he played with none of them - he just got anxious and cranky all the time. Finally my daughter insisted and my granddaughter put his stuff away. His whole attitude changed, he plays with one or two things at a time and they get rotated out when he stops playing with them and he gets something else. The problem was/is - he is very tidy. Even at 18 months he wanted his stuff picked up, so having 'stuff' all over the living room stressed him out. He'll be 3 yrs old soon and he really responses so much better when his little world is tidy.
I'm a self diagnosed hoarder. And I have a huge fear of "regretting it" because I have regretted letting go of things, in the past. I'm an artist... and my studio room is out of control .... and I'm trying to deal with it, a little bit at a time.... This is a really hard one, for me. I really wish My Mom had saved at least a few pieces of my art when I was a kid. She didn't keep anything at all. Anyway. Thank you for this series of videos.
Really great examples! Definitely guilty of the too many mugs thing...but sometimes you can use them for decor - to store pens, makeup, etc., plus my family goes through a ton of coffee, and then you have those 'special' mugs...but still, too many! I don't even like half of them personally haha
Love your video. You ladies conveyed this information in a fun and entertaining way. Thank you for making me smile. I will keep your words in mind each day while purging and organizing.
This is what I am struggling with in my house. Not so much for me as for my husband and adult son. After having to clean out what my mother left behind after her passing, I do not bring in "stuff". If I don't have a use for it, I don't get it. Now I am trying to de-clutter, down size, and sort through everything. I lost count as to how many bags of trash I put out (thankfully my town does not charge by the bag!). Anything that I don't have a need for, but is still decent is going in a box(es) for a yard sale come spring. If it doesn't sell, it is NOT coming back in the house! I have 6 months to finish this in. I hope I can make it!!
Haha my kids get a basket in each bedroom for toys and one in the living room. I like to keep them around half full. If they get to the top with toys its time to purge.
I just got called out for having a massive mug collection for two people! :D *hides excessive mug collection* I suppose I could get rid of like, maybe, one! Thanks for a great video, ladies. These have been really helpful and I'll be putting all of the tips to use ASAP.
My oldest son told me the same thing "Why did you keep those old school papers ? He almost looked horrified lol Maybe in a way "I" was holding onto them for memories of there youth :(
It's not a sad thing to do, I've kept hold of around 300-400 reading books because of the memories of me and my nan when she was alive, she passed away when I was 12 and a half but before then for around 2 years we would go around the local charity shops (I'm from the UK) and we would buy books, me it would be enid blyton and goosebumps and for my nan it would be agatha christie and ruth rendall books and I keep hold of the books probably for the same reasons as you do with your children school papers for the memories of past good times, for you your children's youth, for me it was happy times when my nan was alive, I am 26 and for the last about 4 years I have been trying to part with most of the books well most of the enid blyton books but even now I still can't part with most of them, we had a flood in a previous house and so some of the books had got ruined and had to be thrown away but the rest I am still holding on to.
A good way to deal with the kids school projects and papers is to take photos of the projects/artwork (especially digital photos) and scan pdf's of the papers. That way, everything can be organized in files on the computer.
To funny I need this. I wanted to spend money on organizing my junk. When really I just need to purge. I have pregnancy stuff I'm hoping to use. But I'm not even trying to get pregnant. I'm so torn about it but sometimes we just got to remember if we really need it God will provide . Sometimes I've given up stuff only to get it back a few months down the road. It's like I feel if I keep it I'm saving money but if I let it go I'm freeing my stress load and not spending money on organizing my junk etc.
My husband was a lonely only child, the next sibling was 11 years older. He saved his Hot Wheels from the 70's and turned a small profit when he was able to let them go. Now if I could just get him to turn loose of his hokey cards we could make a fortune!
I've found things that expired years ago from the medicine cabinet. My parents don't like to go through all the stuff they've purchased, so guess i'll do it for them.
Goodwill is a for profit store, Salvation Army is not. Another good place is the homeless shelters or battered women shelters. Thank you for your good tips.
+Dyane Kyllonen I work for a Goodwill store in KY and I know for a fact that it is a non-profit organization. They also run and support a homeless shelter for ten families that they teach life skills, parenting skills, job training and other valuable life tools. Goodwill also bought an American flag for a town in IN that a Korean veteran was trying to raise money for. If I wasn't working for a Goodwill, I would still donate to them.
Some animal shelters will take donations of miscellaneous items to sell at their fundraisers - they take and need all rugs, towels and blankets to use in their shelters.
I stopped giving to family and friends because I feel like they just took it because they couldn't say no, then it clutter up there own house. Instead goodwill is better and people can choose on their own if they want it.
I do agree but i think also you have to consider the age of the child and the meaning of the toy to them, my brothers for instance still treasure a big box of toys like as if they are ornaments, and i myself have a couple of items i treasure from child hood i think as long as you don't hold on to too many your okay but you also have to be careful, thanks though really great video!
haha kids paperwork when my son started school I swear I kept just about everything from kindergarten I then realized I was being ridiculous and in 1St grade I only kept report cards and a couple other papers and with this year. some of the papers I take a picture post on facebook and throw it away.

Last year I moved from a 5,000 sq ft house to a 1100 sq ft house. I followed the advise to “take only what you love or what is useful”. Since I moved I have gotten rid of even more things and my closets are not even full. But I have what I need and love, and it is very freeing. I am now living the peaceful, simple life I’ve always wanted. Good Luck!
Yes, downsizing as we get older is quite a difficult task. Nowadays the stuff we preserved from our parents and grandparents and the stuff we lovingly bought for ourselves may mean very little to a new generation. If we're lucky we can give it away to the grandchildren when they first set up their own homes, if they happen to want it or like it. If not, the task is to sell it as efficiently as possible and set the money aside for their future education. People in Sweden call this death clearing - ensuring that you don't leave too much mess behind for your family to deal with when you die. At first it seems daunting - actually it is daunting! - but then you reconcile yourself to at least being in charge of the ultimate fate of these cherished things.
@@chaplainesque I wish you good luck,, My children and now grown grandchildren do not want anything of mine.. One granddaughter took my mother's Corning-ware casserole dish. That's All!
Oh come on. You have to keep a full set of dishes, even if you have guests once a year. In my country, not having all plates match (or worse - not having enough plates) makes a very poor impression. You can't just keep 3-4 plates because there's just 2 of you.
I know what you mean. When I immigrated I carefully took a whole set of fine china with me. homeless shelters for sure and churches like St Vincents

We have ARC, a worthy cause. But yes, the Salvation Army is the best.
There's an app called Artkive where you take a picture of kids art projects and then you can make a book of it once a year or whenever you want! :)

There are several ideas on techniques to de-clutter easily
Allow yourself five minutes every day to declutter
Give away something each day
Fill up a trash bag now!
Make a list of what to do this week.
Get four sacks and sort everything into trash, give away, keep, or relocate.
This tip should be number 1 or 2. Our number one obstacle is too much stuff.
Yah but some of the collection become collectables worth money which you can research what they could be worth on eBay
This is true only these items have to be kept in like new condition , and stored in well contained boxes covers etc . Not tossed around in and out of places and temperatures . I learned my lesson on some things I dragged around for years ....
my son takes photos of his daughters drawings and puts them on to a disk then he throws the papers away she never asks about them .

Was this the last one? :(
