I was 10 years old when I saw him live with my parents. I was so inspired that they bought me a classical guitar and I blame Carlos Montoya for my obsession ever since!
Was very fortunate that my Dad took me to see Carlos play. My mind was blown. By far the best guitarist I have ever seen live.......and I have seen hundreds and hundreds. R.I.P.
That must have been incredible. He is for sure one of the best guitarists ever. I found a record of his at a garage sale in the early 70s, and bought it. He's amazing.
Saw him play this in concert in 1962 in Newport RI. Small venue. He played Rondena for me back stage. I was hooked. All I wanted to do from then on was master flamenco music.
I remember listening to The Beatles, and my Father walking into the room, and I said "I want to learn how to play the guitar" and he said, we'll before we spend the money on a guitar for you, you'll have to listen to of the real masters, 2 nights later he came home, (he was a waiter in NYC, and came home with the album, "Montoya" and said... "you want to hear a real guitarist? listen to this man play the guitar", at 1st I argued with him that there is no way this could be One person playing, there must be more than one guitarist. Shows me how wrong and stupid, youth can be. ... Thanks Dad, where ever you may be, then he came home one night, with another album by a guy named Segovia. but a few years later, I heard Black Sabbath, and that REALLY changed my life, I bought a 2nd hand Ovation, and Gibson SG, and haven't looked back since. even though I still have tapes, albums, and CD's of them that I'll play at top volume in my car, and in my home sometimes just for inspiration. It still amazes me.
Your Dad had amazing taste and obviously knew his music. And he was totally right about Carlos Montoya. But then again, you were listening to the Beatles.....both giants in their own musical fields....
Muchas gracias.
holy shit, what sorcery is this ._____.? to me the very best of all times on this style has always been the great paco de lucia, now im having second thoughts, ill watch this a few dozen times and then a few dozen times over and again, im impressed
john smith I'm at that same conclusion where if I'm gonna watch some flamenco I mainly watch Paco thinking he put the real excitement into flamenco but then you realise there's nothing new under the sun! I didn't realise this guy was on fire way back before even the Beatles came along. I'm thinking this offers more musically than a lot of Paco's playing though he's lacking in the perfect technique of Paco, it's made me realise that all these players offer a different flavour and it's not like you can say which is the best, but you're right, I keep coming back to this for the music and they're quite happy themes, Paco is someone I prefer to watch rather than listen to.
I saw him live when I was a kid in Houston, TX around the very early 70's. He was a nice guy; I don't think he spoke English, but he did give me an autograph on the program - still have it.
Oh my God!! It almost makes me want to use my guitars for firewood! I mean watch and listen to this, Fi-Nom-in-al !!! Gives new meaning to the word "genius". WOW
La Jota is a popular music style of Spain. Flamenco is the popular music of the South (Andalusia, espcially) and Jota is the popular music of the North (Kingdom of Aragon, especially, Kingdom of Navarre and Castile). ua-cam.com/video/zgtPsxpRkIo/v-deo.html This is a popular Jota de Aragón sung by Plácido Domingo
Jota is not an style, is more likely a type of tune in 3/4 time spread all around Spain. There're jotas from Galicia, Asturias, Aragón, Castille, Andalucía... And the Navarra one is considered to be the original . :)
Most music lovers haven't a clue who the real masters of guitar and great flamenco players are. Mr. Montoya is impeccable and one of the greatest to perform.
And that beginner from Harvard who were only playing rubbish got more that 80 million views. That proves one thing . That most people are ignorants. I mean let's face it , no one stumbles with an einsteins every now and then while walking in the streets .
I know the purists dismiss him as not a true Flamenco for his disregarding of the Compás, but damn it, not only he had a scorching technique, he was capable of summoning up real duende when he wanted. To me, Carlos Montoya is as Flamenco as they come...
Same with Manitas de Plata (whom I met several times). Totally irrelevant because he often didn't get the rythms right according to the rules of the purists. But listen to his Jota on UA-cam...
I wonder if Montoya ever had a run in with Segovia. Andrés Segovia often said he wanted to save the guitar from the noisy flamencos, wonder if he was referring in any way to Montoya?
Carlos was a guy who knew how to play flamenco very well but decided to to go to America and became a showman. He threw the flamenco compas out the window, tuned his guitar about two tones lower to facilitate all those endless left hand tricks on a guitar with such a low action that you couldn't fit a cigarette paper under the strings! He had a good technique apart from his tremolo, lots of showy tricks and he sucked in the yanks and made heaps of money. Sabicas on the other hand went to America and stayed pure to his art and became the greatest flamenco guitarist of his era and possibly of all time!
Why not simply enjoy this man's playing instead of trying to make him seem less than he is. I have a strong feeling that he is a MUCH better guitarrista than YOU!

Very Hollywood. You are all wrong. He was an astonishing entertainer. He could keep the timing but he could make more money playing his style for the Americans. He did play with his uncle Ramon (the father of the Flamenco Guitar) in early years. I had been at 3 concerts and he received standing ovations at every single one. When I spoke with him several times he was a bit defensive because he knew that Spanish Flamenco guitarists in Spain did not take him seriously. People such as Nino Ricardo, Sabicas, Juan Carmona, and so on. If you want to compare his counter part then look over :Manitos De Plata. It is a long story but you can go from there. SUERTE!

One of the greatest guitars 🎸 players in the world that ever was & is still is the best in my life
I went to his concert at Mississippi State University in 1963 when I was a freshman. He is still the best that I have heard.
Maybe the greatest guitar player ever. Self taught and cant read sheet music. Thank you Mr. Montoya.

Lhasa Lover
He's like the original metal guy of flamenco with his flashy legato left hand, also tuning down his strings like Tony Iommi.
Your Dad had amazing taste and obviously knew his music. And he was totally right about Carlos Montoya. But then again, you were listening to the Beatles.....both giants in their own musical fields....
Uh. Your story sure is a Graber. Hola!
I heard of him when I was in the military in the 70s came to love ❤️ Flamingo music every since that time.
Your dad didn't show paco de lucia to you, that would change your life for sure :D
one of the greatest right hands to ever play! Bravo!

Five wound strings, and that fluid…
This is as good as it gets on guitar.
Classical "Shredding" by one of the True Masters.
Flamenco Guitarists do not shred! Never the less that does sound funny!
They were the original "shredders".
Jota ..increible pieza
Carlos un verdadero master !!
I'd like this 1000 times if I could!
I saw him live when I was a kid in Houston, TX around the very early 70's. He was a nice guy; I don't think he spoke English, but he did give me an autograph on the program - still have it.

Muchas gracias, amigo. I have his music on cassette, l recorded it very clearly & still have it on cassette.
The name of the second piece is Jota. It's the second track on the album The Guitar Artistry of Carlos Montoya, a great album.
La Jota is a popular music style of Spain. Flamenco is the popular music of the South (Andalusia, espcially) and Jota is the popular music of the North (Kingdom of Aragon, especially, Kingdom of Navarre and Castile).

monstruo ! vaya pasada
I love how there's the cleaning up of dishes sound in the background. Music was an organic experience with warts and all.
awesome
I'm not even sure this is "flamenco". This guy is an enigma..amazing
+Mike Halloran
I didn't realize that. I look at him as the Bruce Lee of Flamenco. He just kinda did his own thing and that's why I like him.

And the Tony Iommi of flamenco
A Great Spanish-Gipsy Flamenco ever!
It Is spelled Gypsy and Gitano in Spanish.
If i could be just half as good as Carlos,i shall die a happy man !!
I would be very happy to be just one quarter as good as him....
This is beyond virtuosic it’s hard to believe it unless you see it.
Like Heifetz, the force of the man was incredible.
Gracias, feliz año nuevo a todos

I wonder if Montoya ever had a run in with Segovia. Andrés Segovia often said he wanted to save the guitar from the noisy flamencos, wonder if he was referring in any way to Montoya?

What strings are on B and G. They are so thick
Only 5 strings? Solo 5 cuerdas?
Is this the same tune as Malaganeu ? I know montoya says Malaga . Is this Montoyas version of Malaganeu . ? Hope i have spelt it right sorry
I thought this was called Malaguena. Am I wrong?
Jorge Spahn. He told the audience the title before he played.
The guy has a secret invisible third hand. That's the only explanation.
Very Hollywood. You are all wrong. He was an astonishing entertainer. He could keep the timing but he could make more money playing his style for the Americans. He was AMAZING! PERIOD! One of the greatest Flamenco guitarists to ever exist! That simple! YOU are wrong!
The other tune is 'Jota'. Is that a five-string?
¿Carlos Montoya, or Ramon Montoya?
